Went to see Joe Jackson - probably 1980-ish - somewhere in London and the Keys were the support band. Just amazing live - went out and bought the album the next day and have been playing it ever since. Luckily found some chap in the states a few years later and managed to get hold of a bootleg CD. Why was it never released in that format ? No I-Tunes ? no Spotify ? Come on people - get a grip and sort it out !
Never thought I'd find this, but I put "The Keys 1981" into the search box and up it came! This LP made little noise in the U.S.A., but the local alternative station in DC. WHFS, played "I Don't Wanna Cry" a lot, so it has cult status to some. TY for the post.
Saw the Keys play in a venue in Victoria London (opposite the station) millions of years ago. It was brilliant gig but then they were brilliant times! Dont even get me started on Nine Below Zero!!!
Hi Gregory. Thanks, great that you picked up on that. We routined the guitar parts at home before we went into full rehearsal or recording so we knew they worked. We were lucky because our styles and ideas complemented each other. We also rehearsed all the parts and vocals at home with guitars and bass at low volume and Geoff playing drums on a pad so we were ready for full rehearsal before recording. This meant we could focus on feel and nuances rather than routining the parts at full volume. I was playing an original 52 tele with a Seymour Duncan replacement neck pick up. I used an original '65 Vox AC 30 but with a retro fit top boost and an original Wem Copycat tape delay. From memory Ben used a 79 Anniversary Start through a Fender Twin, not sure what delay he used but may have been Boss. All the backing tracks were recorded live in an ambient room, on 8 Track tape, no screens, no overdubs.
@@stevetatler2307 just wanted to say that I finally got to hear The Keys Unlocked. I had no idea there was to be a follow-up release. Some amazing tunes on there...
the man 3rd from the left resembles that tennessee luke fella from tim and eric's hit television series "tim and eric awesome show" brought to you by abso-lutely productions and [adult swim] broadcasting.
I'm half-way through the 2nd song and all into it. Why isn't this on Spotify? Would rather listen to it there... A VERY easy listen...great songs, production, chords, catchiness...VG!
love it. played this album a lot lately, love the power pop from late 70s early 80s, dazzlers, the A,s , any trouble, hitmen , a bigger splash, etc, love the keys, got all their records x
Thanks for your support Paul. Steve Tatler (Keys). By the way A Bigger Splash were friends of ours and I saw them many times around South London. Great live 3 piece band.
I had two copies of this LP, one of which ran slightly slower than the alternative. This is a rip of that quicker (but better) version. Still sounds great 40 years after release. 'Hello Hello' runs at 3:30 unlike 3:37 on my home rip
thanks for reply Steve, i !st came across a bigger splash on tv, they were on some new faces type show hosted by Freddie Starr, they played " its a secret " thought it was great, went out and bought it. ive had my vinyl in storage for a while but have recently moved house and sorted it all out, i am playing keys album 2 / 3 times a day ! bloody great, any chance you lot might be gigging any time soon ? cheers,
Hi Paul. Nothing immediate but will keep you posted. Incidentally I believe I have a live cassette in my loft of A Bigger Splash from the Apples and Pears (I think) in Rotherhithe.
A brilliant album, slowly has crept into my Top 50 of all-time. Hooks for miles, unique guitar interplay, and lyrics that unfold after each listen. Much better than countless lauded albums, but production is far too bright and thin.
the guy on the far left, Ben.........is my dad :-D
Ask him when we're gonna get a reissue of this on vinyl. In my top 50 of all time!
Which one of these fine gentlemen was the lead singer?..Great voice.

THE great overlooked album of the 1980s.

Joe Jackson produced this.
Gee .. I can't hear it.. lol

Really great guitar interplay on this record, Steve. What kind of amps were you guys using?

Ah...I see Joe Jackson produced this. Makes sense.

Such a fine collection of songs. I still have my original copy of the album. It should have been more successful. Did they release anything else?

@@gregoryellis5724 Thank you 🕺
The original album is let down by being so bass shy. Almost nothing there. I wonder if the European or US/Canadian releases sound any better.
