    The thing about tube amps is you don’t even think about changing your amp for at least a decade and maybe a lot longer. Modeling amps get redesigned and relaunched every couple of years.

    • @shred5
      @shred5 4 роки тому

      The cool thing about modeling amps is that you can have a bunch of sounds in one amp, but all of those sounds are designed to replicate sounds from other (and mostly tube) amps. The modeling amps are getting better though.

      They (Fender - Tonemaster) are already talking about firmware updates. Perhaps a few tweaks during its lifetime? It should be the same as a tube amp. You just use it. If it continues to deliver the goods, then the only thing you might change would be your pedals.

    • @shred5
      @shred5 4 роки тому +1

      @@PaulSter that would be sweet but if they do too many of them they won't sell new amps either.

      Just to play Devil's advocate, with a solid state amp you are not changing tubes and rebiasing them on a semi-regular basis. Also, there is no worry of a tube failing during a performance either because it is faulty or the amp was mishandled causing damage leading to failure.

    • @tedunguent156
      @tedunguent156 4 роки тому +2

      Yeah, but not all solid state are modeling amps. This one wasn't. It's a replacement for the tube amp for someone who doesn't want the cost or weight issues. And the new designs have usb or bluetooth for software/firmware updates.

    I have a deluxe reverb tone master and it's a great amp. I've played tube amps for 40 years and it's really close. I like the fact it only weighs 23 pounds. And no tube maintenance. All tube amps are really finicky.

    • @SDPickups

      No, it will never sound like a real Deluxe Reverb. Money wasted. In 6 months it will fail and nobody will know how to fix it. My '73 Deluxe Reverb is 47 years old. It is super easy to work on and is point to point wiring. It is super easy to do any number of mods. This amp will never die as long as its maintained, and even if its not, it can be repaired easily as long as tubes are still made. Yes, their digital stuff keeps sounding better, but its never going to replace my vintage Fender amps, and sure, they are going to sell a lot of these to kids who never played the real deal and they will claim its identical, blah blah blah. No, it isn't. The real amps have a raw sound that solid state will never match. Notice how the player in this video keeps saying the REAL DR has better note seperation and more. the fake DR sounds too "nice" muddy, artificial.

      @@SDPickups I've been playing a BOSS Katana MK1 for nearly four years without a single hitch. Abuse it, bounce it around, whatever, and it still sounds great and I have never had anyone suggest it sounded anything other than stellar in the mix. Just upgraded to the new BOSS Katana Artist MKII which sports a larger, more robust cabinet and a MUCH improved WAZA greenback speaker. The tones it can achieve as well as the response to attack are truly wonderful. With the Roland GA-FC foot controller, I can set up 2 banks of 4 channels - each with a unique voicing and up to five simultaneous effects that I can turn on or off via the switch. And IF I bring a computer along, I can switch out any of those channels to provide completely different effects, modulation, boosters, fuzz, distortion and reverb. All in one box without worrying about electrical supplies in the venue, or having a valve fail. And it sounds great.

    Although it's getting closer, modelling amps still have that digital fizziness in the top end that gives it away. Same thing happens when using modelling software. Once they figure out how to properly emulate the top end I will consider a modelling amp for practical reasons (home/studio rehearsal). But for recording and live purposes I think I will always stick with tubes.

    The high end, at least on all of these UA-cam videos, is the giveaway for me. I guessed correctly because the tube amp has a brighter high end than the modeler.

Probably because they aren't trying to sell these amps now that people are starting to come around on the DRRIs having superior tone. These TMs are starting to fill the used amp pile up at all the music shops lol. Plug a fuzz into them and you immediately hear the difference. The TM cannot handle fuzz pedals whatsoever. That shake-and-bake earthquake at the end. I think solid state amps are like any other electronic device that has evolved over the last few decades. Would you compare your new iPhone with a Motorola Star Tac? Or your 65 inch flatscreen and surround system with an old RCA console? Less expensive and very light weight with "nearly" the same tone qualities while being much more forgiving to mishaps. And they have more input-output and connectivity. It is truly getting to a point where the price point(although those are a little expensive), that the greatly improved tone and weight of digital technology will eventually outweigh their tube counterparts. No doubt about it. People will always bash digital amps because they started out not being that great. But they are getting extremely close in tone so much that unless you really put them side by side there is nothing to really complain about anymore with a lot of these amps. Their tone is really that close.
    I own a Tone Master Twin Reverb and I've owned the all tube 65 reissue Twin version as well as the all tube 65 reissue Deluxe Reverb. I'm impressed with the Tone Master Twin. I've got the Tone Master Deluxe ordered. These are great sounding amps, extremely light weight and the cabinets are even better than the 65 reissues being they are pine. Unless you are paying a lot more money for a hand wired amp, getting reliable tubes (how much longer will good tubes be available?) and performing annual maintenance your tube amps will lose their tone. And the Tone Master amps are whisper quiet. And they don't run hot.
    I love tube amps and I own them. I still own a Fender 68 Custom Deluxe and an older Hot Rod Deluxe. Great amps. And I personally used to bash digital technology when all you heard was a scooped harsh and bassy sound that never came close to what they were trying to achieve. That was many years ago. Technology has come a LONG way.

      My impression before knowing which was which, the valve amp was sparkly - the digital was throaty. I prefer sparkly, but I've had a Rickenbacker and HiWatt for 30 years.
      I want a Deluxe Reverb and have been considering the Tonemaster, but I suspect the resale may suck compared to the valve version.

    Are fender planning to pull out of the valve amp market?

    The Tonemaster is Fender's attempt to sell a non-tube amp for $1000. If you want a gigging amp that sounds great, doesn't weigh a lot and you don't have fool with tubes, buy a Fender Champion series for less than $400. Other wise the real Deluxe sound has not been duplicated. I own a 65 Deluxe reissue and it was obvious from the very first play which was which.

      Ehhh you're paying for the looks too. Most people would never know it wasn't a real Deluxe if you ripped the Tone Master tag off (easy). I think a huge thing is these look exactly like the real things and for a lot of people that's important.

    Tonemaster kills the ri because its an emulation of an original deluxe

      That's what I think folks are missing. The TM isn't intended to cop the RI, it's targeting the real thing. I just sold my Super Reverb RI and kept my '68 drip rail that has BF specs. The RI did not have 'that' tone.
      I'm loving my DR TM and is my go-to now.
      Tried Line6 and other modeling stuff over the years and rejected all of them.
