    This came across my feed this morning and piqued my interest. Not a comic collector of any substance, but I do like affordable vintage stories and illustrations so I will be looking on Amazon for these after posting this. Thanks for posting your varied content.

      thank you, you should be able to find it on Amazon, though I know from my own experience, as soon as I see a video on a particular book, I end up rushing along to buy a copy and it was published a few years back now.

    Great review. Love pre-code horror comics. I got one with the slipcase, which is not just a cheap cardboard, but a sturdy hard plastic case. Scans that they used here are surprisingly clean. Some scans of their earlier collections had some really 'muddy' quality to them (in my case, Briefer's Frankenstein collections) and some had colour problems i.e. yellows looked light brown.
    Now I plan on getting some of PS Artbooks science-fiction collections from that era (mainly early 50s Forbidden Worlds volumes). Hopefully these comics are as good as horror ones.

      I suspect they are, I love a lot of those SF stories as well. Thanks for the info about the scans, I felt 99% of them were very readable, a few minor issues on some pages but nothing to worry about nor was it particularly muddy and hard to read, though I can't compare with the originals. It is an impressive book, pity there has been no second volume though !

      It is always great to get a good slipcase, I noticed that some of the sellers were selling the slipcase ones but they were a little more expensive.

    The PS art books are brilliant they are my kinds of reprints I am one who prefers the art not cleaned up, Harvey produced some very good stuff I have always been a big fan of Alarming Tales particually issue # 1 where Kirby did a Kamandi prototype if memory serves the actual title of the story was Kamandi of the caves, great review .

      Noticed they have a listing for Alarming Tales Softcover, can't see any HB versions of the book. I have added that to my list to purchase once it comes out, seems to be a little delayed. I should have more of their books, often see them at comic marts. I really like the Witches Tales books. I wish all the other would release them in a similar format as PS artbook, I like to see the whole mag (ads, stories, letters) and as long as the story and art can be seen, with minimal tweaks in Photoshop etc, then I would be happy. I love the bonus material, those original art pages looked excellent, often makes you wish they hadn't added any colour though I doubt if they would have worked as well on the newsstand.

    I like the reproductions that way because they resemble the original issues better. Re-doing the color and cleaning it up too much would make it look like something else - not authentic.

      Really love the PS artbooks approach, I suspect we won't see Marvel following that approach. I will be buying many more of these PS artbooks, especially at the next comic mart (they are often piled high there).

    Andrew, would you recommend digging deeper and getting the other PS Arbooks Harvey volumes separately? Or are the stories collected here the best Harvey had to offer?
    Also, do you have PS Artbooks This Magazine is Haunted?

    • @AndrewBuckleBookReviews
      @AndrewBuckleBookReviews  Рік тому +1

      Haven't got the This Magazine Is Haunted, I have about 5 of the PS Artbooks. The "Best of" is clearly a good start point but I can't give a start point to get deeper. I like the Witches Tales volumes but I think there are great stories in many of the volumes, there are a lot of duff tales as well. You can always check out the tales on sites such as 'Digital Comic Museum' (as well as issuu) as they are public domain. I really prefer to read them in the physical format though

      @@AndrewBuckleBookReviews I'll check them out online. I'm trying to create a small time-capsule of different comic book eras with my collection, but there's so much pre-code horror, it's hard to know which ones to prioritize!

      Perhaps go on to the forums on Facebook, there are pre-code horror forums and probably a harvey horror one and that may give you a lot of inked pages and examples as well as a suggested reading list etc There are also perhaps blogs on harvey horror as well
