So many beautiful nuggets! I love it when you say that we can’t force our child to learn but we can influence how they feel about it.

It grows my own confidence as well. I feel like I’m learning so much more than I ever knew and were only in 1st grade! 😂

I enjoyed hearing your story. Isn't it amazing how much strugging in school can affect our self esteem for life? I love how your taking your daughter back to basics to gain confidence. That's whats great about homeschooling we can trailer it to their needs. Great video!

So I took her away from “curriculum” math for the past 4 months and now we just stared up again and she’s like a whole new girl. She is breezing past things that she was hard core struggling with. Sometimes all we need is TIME. And thankfully homeschooling affords is that!!!

Thank you for sharing your story. And you're so right about going at your child's level or just below for building confidence and foundation and meeting them where they're at instead of struggling at some hypothetical so called must be at grade level. Each child is an individual and so their learning will be too. ❤️

Yes! I love that you said we need to be humble and apologize if we get impatient and share that we struggle with things too. And you're right, don't worry about grade level! My 7 year old is 3rd grade math and 1st grade reading!

Such GOOD advice! We have one that I suspect dyscalculia with, so I was listening closely to this. Yes, there's a huge difference between just the kid who says, "Ugh I hate math" and the serious struggles to understand the concepts. Building confidence and being willing to go back to the basics is exactly the kind of situation we're in with one of the girls right now.

    • @worldofwashabaugh9403

Yes! Too much pressure on kids (in my opinion). Especially if we remember that God already has a plan for them. And where we fall in short in teaching (which we always will) HE fills in all the gaps. And sometimes I forget that. I tend to think if I don’t teach them this...or if I don’t introduce them to this....etc, then they’ll never make it! Lol. Not true.

Thank you for talking about dyscalculia, it's not talked about enough. Feels like everyone understands dyslexia and is on the look out for it, but dyscalculia is often missed and not understood as much. 🤗👍☺️

Thank you so much for speaking about dyscalculia. My son has it and I’m pretty sure I have a bit of it too. It’s a real struggle and something that isn’t spoken to much about. I’ve heard of it being compared to dyslexia but with math. My son is now 14 and stills struggle with math anxiety but we take it day by day. Your story is amazing and so encouraging!

I struggled with math my whole life then I started a career where I used math everyday(costume and fashion design). I just have my own way of getting to the answers. I try so hard to help my kids learn in a fun way.

That’s why I think too much stress is put on academics for kids. When you find your passion - then you will do and learn everything you want to in order to accomplish that.

I am 51 years old and dyscalculia. Even though I graduated from high school. In 1991 I started looking. At homeschool math programs. That are recommended for students. With the same condition as myself. The one that was affordable for me. Was Learn Math Fast I paid. $40 dollars and you read the lesson and complete the problems. I am making slow gradual progress. Will I ever really understand math. Probably not but can I get better at it. Absolutely and so can you.

This is so good, Shawna! I love your encouragement! Math is definitely a struggle for one of my children. I was able to pick up math intuitively as a kid, but I did not LIKE IT! And teaching it, Oh boy! So hard! I love that you focus on real life math. We try to as well in our home.

I am loving your channel! New subscriber! I've been watching your channel any free time I have this weekend! My daughter struggles with math and I suspect dyscalculia. I HATED math as a child. My dad is a math wizard (engineer) and he tutored me through ALL my math classes through college! I literally would break out in HIVES when it was time to do my math homework in high school! I made straight A's in math but can I do anything but basic math today? NO! haha! My goal for my daughter is to get basic math - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fractions and decimals would be nice, but I just don't know how high she will be able to go. I've homeschooled her from the beginning and we used many math curriculums before finding MLFLE last year. She is 11 and doing level 3 this year. One day at a time...
I LOVE your story on this video! How amazing!!!!! I love what you said about learning math when you could apply it to real life (air traffic controller). This is why we are using Math Lessons so hopefully my kids will learn how math applies to real life.

Very timely- my daughter who was in public school thru this year has struggled with math since 1st grade. She finished off second grade at public school and I just started homeschooling for 3rd this July. I was/am terrified of teaching her. She comes to the table saying I hate math a LOT! We asked for help in public school and they just kept putting it off and pushing her along. We are using Saxon math 3 which so far is very slow paced (thru lesson 15). I was considering master books but I worried about her not being where she needs to be for High School/college. I understand why you are going back with your daughter and maybe it is the public school or (for me personally Catholic school) mentality of falling behind. Colleges want upper level math and I worry about not getting thru it all. I am brand new this year to homeschooling 1st, 3rd and 7th so i am trying to find my way. I hated math too by the way and hardly used any upper level math in my previous career as a dietitian. I actually took no math in college or grad school. Thanks again, I love your videos they calm me and make me take a breath! :)

Thank you for your response! It definitely is a tough place to be in when you see them struggle 😞. Make sure that if you DO want to try Masterbooks you take the placement test- don’t just go by level on the book. She could be grade 1 but place into level 2 or 3 math.

We still have apprenticeship in UK. Really popular option. Work based learning, so you work, and have some assessments and essays to write over the course of a year or two and gain a qualification at the end making you qualified for the industry. There are apprenticeship courses up to university degree level qualifications. In Scotland they're known as modern apprenticeships. :)

We have vocational classes through our public school. System in the United States. My son took vocational classes. In high school. I did also they are for students. Who are not college bound. I took Child Development and Culinary Arts. I got job after I graduated from high school. At daycare center. My son took auto shop classes. Now works for company repairing fork lifts. Homeschool students unfortunately are not always given. The chance to take vocational classes through our public school system. Where I live In Illinois. Our school district does allow them to. But some public school systems. Are not doing what I feel they should be doing. Which is allowing any child. Residing in the school district. To take classes as well as getting homeschooled students. Evaluated and tested for learning disabilities. Because I went to public school. I was tested at no cost to my parents. Received special education services. Which I was legally entitled to. These kids are just as entitled as I was. Their parents should be able to access everything needed. To get there kids the help they need. Biggest bunch of bologna.
