one of the most glorious sounds I've ever heard is a PC-6 startup. one of the most impressive sights is a PC diving to and straightening for a runway landing at 200ft . Irish Parachute Club, Edenderry, Eire
marksandsparks1 Blue Skies from DeLand. So happy to have jumped from one for a few weeks here. Our DZ-owned Porter crashed on take-off some time back but we borrowed one for a short time later on.
My uncle told me the reason for the long nose was because the engine was so light compared to a combustion engine it had to be moved further forward to get the correct cg for the wing.. It also allowed a better usable range of the cg for loading of goods and moving things around.. I actually always wondered why it had such a disproportionately long nose, well I guess I know now lol...
@@asthalis It's 'sarcasm'! I owned a half-scale Corsair a few decades ago and I couldn't see anything over the nose! I'd s-turn while taxiing, periodically dip the nose on climb out. But landing and take off was accomplished by looking out the side for runway orientation. After a while, I learned to land without a final approach: a descending turn and roll out on the runway.
Beautiful paint scheme. I didn't know you could get a backup camera...... Needs one of those backup alarms they put on commercial trucks. BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
We had two with the Police in Oman. (A40-AK & A40-AL I think in 1975/6) Great aircraft! When we were at the factory they demonstrated their 'steam rocket' for even shorter take-off. Magic!
@@mikeh2520 HI Mike. The 'steam rocket' was a tubular device below the fuselage where the water was super heated by the engine and then released at high pressure to produce added power which made the Porter almost virtually leap into the air without pollution.
It was a very hot day too so that is even more impressive. It was about 31°C by calculating cricket chirps. Yes you can do that, i tried it listening to crickets in my backyard and was within a degree. To convert cricket chirps to degrees Celsius, count the number of chirps in 25 seconds, divide by 3, then add 4 to get the temperature
Totally incredible plane and the color of it. Just amazing flying and the take off too great turns too..you did an excellent job on this video too..Thank you so so much for your videos too..
Made that way. If you have two spare parts (fixed surface and control panel), you can replace left or right hor. stabilizer and elevator or ver. stabilizer and rudder!
Nice helicopter you got there lol And the backing up.. now that's a fancy trick. I wonder if there's any mirror or way to look behind you for the pilot. He did it with such confidence.
Rather slow in the air. We were flying from Kerang Victoria To Broken hil NSWl in a cherokee and heard voice traffic of one coming down from Golldburn NSW. Wind was inconsequential and yet we beat him in by a good margin. I think he said that they cruise at about 90 kts.
Thick wings and square airframe create a slow cruise. It's a specialized airplane and it does it's short-field, short-haul role, unimproved airstrip(road, field, backyard) role to perfection.
My only trip in a Porter was very short. The pilot said one of two fuel pumps wasn't working and we made a quick turn and landed again. The question arose later about why a plane with fuel in its overhead wings needed pumps, but perhaps this had to do with the type of engine(?) Enlightenment would be appreciated.
I believe fuel supply by gravity would not suffice as it would not be adequate when G forces would pull the fuel away from the engine. In addition that turbine is a very thirsty beast and would require more fuel than gravity feed could supply.
Not sure for the porter but for the caravan there is a fuel reservoir below engine level that gets fed from the wing tanks by gravity and then feeds the engine with pumps. Guess thats an extra measure of safety that the engine will always have fuel provided avoiding flameouts and hot restarts for the PT6.
Maan that was short! Must've been zero payload and very little fuel though... That said, I think Porter has the shortest ground roll of all turbine bush planes. Pilatus Porter, Quest Kodiak, PAC-750 XSTOL and GippsAero GA10 Airvan are basically your choices when it comes to turbine single bush planes. My choice would be Kodiak, which (to me) is the best bush turbine, all things considered. For example, floats must be an option....which rules out PAC and GA10...at least for now. On the piston side Murphy Moose (with M-14PF) and GippsAero GA8 Airvan are the first bush workhorses that come to mind. Twin turbines there is Twin Otter and PZL Mielec M28 Skytruck, of which I would choose M28 (An-28 with PT6).
@@angelossakellariou2832 Pilatus will make the final PC-6 this year. Then they will be discontinued to focus more on the PC-12 and their newest product: the PC-24 business jet.

igotanM16 1000 ft landing distance its impossible for the pc12. The remote short mountain strips that serves the pc 6 at 7,8 thousand feets its impossible to be served from the pc12.
As a retired turbine engine mechanic I must say I still get excited when I hear one starting up.
It's all in the sound.
-27 pt6 , 11 yrs of that sound at 20 loads a day , loving memories of Porter , Fairchild version at that

Such a cool aircraft and the Porter along with the Otter and Beaver did a lot
to open up many remote places in the world.
The switch from reverse to forward, impressive! The plane masterful.....

It almost literally just hopped off the ground. It flies so softly. I've never seen a plane like that
I've never seen anything like this a plane with reverse and the shortest takeoff ever!
Draco?
Is that reverse done with prop pitch or actual wheel motor? Cool and watching it makes me dizzy alittle. Up up and away.
@Todd m Maybe he was somehow referring to this Draco:

Seven seconds to take off! incredible.

Should have a periscope; so the pilot can see the runway during taxiing, takeoffs, and three point landings. Nobody can see over that long nose. 🙂
