The price of feed is different from the cost of feed. It wasn't made clear how many of the bags of feed per month would be needed. With a degree in equine management though I had this knowledge way prior to attaining degree, the following is calculation for monthly hay and grain cost. A horse needs to consume 2% of total body weight per day, a one thousand pound horse needs twenty pounds of food per day. That includes grass, hay and grain. Grain or concentrated seed should never be more than seven pounds of the twenty (per day) leaving the remainder to be fed in grass stuffs. An average 60 pound bale of quality have, like straight Timothy would feed one horse for four days. I budget for two bales per week per horse and eight per month. Including tax, $11.50 per bale is $92 per month. I feed triple crown perform gold which is $27 per 50 lb. bag. One bag should feed one horse for seven days (50/7=7.14) which is four bags per month for cost of $108. So total feed and hay cost per month for 1000 pound horse is $200. And pasture board, owner supplies feed, is around $300 in my area so off the top, the monthly budget starts at $400.

You do a pretty thorough job with your explanations of cost , feed and different types of boarding. Your pretty much right on spot and do a really nice fluid talk of all there is with the upkeep and care of owning a horse.
When I was a kid third grade to college, I was the only guy of an all girl barn. Your stalls are like the ones we had on a friend's huge piece of property on the beach in Florida. I did all kinds of different boarding to basically always having to do it myself, and then full board. Riding bareback every week end a half mile to the beach where we'd get there at four in the morning because of low tide and mornings were always cooler, spending all day having the time of our lives, on the way back , we stopped at a park that had a fresh water pond and water fall where we'd take the horses swimming to clean off the salt water from the beach ride. Grade school all the way to college. I had a great upbringing. But like I said , I was the only guy and being with all those horse girls, I got beat up alot. It actually was alot of fun .
In all that early time till college , i had eight different horses.
Not all at one time of course. Three quarter horses, 2 thouroughbteds , Paso fino and two Palomino's .
Just telling you how it was, but now I'm old , haven't ridden in a while, miss the smell of horse crap in shavings if you know what I mean, meaning I miss the barn smell.
Anyhow, you did good in your video,
Your intelligent and very informative. But full board around here these days is 1000 to 1500 dollars a month. Some of the young snobby kids have three to four horses a piece , and actually two young kids have five horses a piece plus a pony , at 1500 for each horse and eachs kids parents pay each for five horses a piece times 1500 each plus all vet bills as with rich parents just sending a huge check every month. And that doesn't cover extra money for weekly riding classes and shoes on the horse and horse show .
For they all wear their noses way high into the air just like all their rich parents do it around the barn. Some don't even flinch , to pay a check for thirty thousand a month for each kid.
Ridiculous but it keeps the kids happy I suppose. As for myself, I'd rather care for horses myself , yeah I like cleaning stalls. The only thing I would say to add to your cost estimates is of course the vet bills which, you have to have all the recommended shots every year, why I've seen parents pay twenty five thousand just for the vet bills per month invoice. Then get and farrier bill plus if you.dont know how to feed your horse correctly , you could cause more harm than good for they could colic. And too a pasture fed horse has to , in my mind, qualify as a grass eater to be able to eat continuously on a big pasture for some horse just can't handle all the grass for you give them too much, it will cause laminitis and or founder and then your horses health is shattered forever. For you don't ever want to buy a horse that has previously foundered ever in it's life and history. Then not only do the horses have to then basically stay away from grass and have toive on a little bucket of grain a day. For their legs take the nutrients from the grass and they swell. Then go lame. Then you'd never be able to sell the horse if it's foundered, you have to either give the horse away or donate it to a children's home that use horses to teach kids..
But of course you know that. It's terrible to see horses kept in an old muddy or dusty and unsanitary paddock that's got horrible living conditions , for just dirt.paddocks and stalls for it sucks for the horse for they get really hot and bothered with all that dirt and dust. When it rains, poor horses have to ride out the rain being left out with no shed and then standing in water and or muddy paddocks is not good either for that will rott the hooves. Ok I'm finished. Happy riding off into the sunset.

I’ve loved horses my whole life & I took lessons when I was 12-14 years old (am 40 now). I’ve started taking lessons again after all that time & as an adult, I’m at the point where I realize that actually owning a horse (which is still a dream/goal of mine) is not feasible right now.
She begins the video with the cost of the horse, which yes, depending on the age, training/discipline & breed, you can expect to see a huge range of prices. In my state (NC), it seems that $5,000 will get you a decent horse. Of course the younger/more training a horse has the more expensive.
But of course that’s just the beginning! Adding up boarding, grain/hay, vet bills (emergency or otherwise), farrier, tack, additional training, fly spray, etc *over the course of the horse’s life* & you’ll easily exceed the cost of buying the animal to begin with. Based on her math, the upper end of boarding alone PER YEAR will be $7,200! Boarding is not a one time fee, it will be an ongoing expense, so her final math at the end is just plain wrong.
So knowing all this, I’ve basically had to talk myself down & ask myself if I really, *really* want to own one? The answer is no. If I were to own one, it would be irresponsible of me. I want to be able to provide for it & give it the best care possible, not buy one & maybe 2-5 years later realize I’m broke and/or in debt to my eyeballs & have to surrender it to a rescue, or sell to someone I don’t know.
What I *do* want however, is to have a bond with a horse that I can ride on a regular basis. I wanted them back in my life, & lessons were/are a damn good place to start.
So be realistic, do research for where you live on costs & take your time! It doesn’t cost anything to wait or rethink your decisions a few times!

Sarah H I feel you! I’m 38 and have wanted a horse my whole life but I live in the Southern California suburbs and here owning a horse is crazy expensive plus all the driving thru our terrible traffic to get to the boarding stable just made it not worth it. BUT my husband and I are moving to Tennessee next year and buying acreage and that’s makes owning a horse so much cheaper. So I will finally be able to get my horse tho it will take some time as I am very inexperienced, I plan to lease and see if I can volunteer at barns before I ever actually buy a horse. If you can move someplace with a better cost of living like we are and get some land, maybe you can realize your dream!

Carrie We’ll be neighbors! North Carolina is about as good as it gets as far as cost of living but I still can’t afford it. I would have to work crazy amounts of overtime to keep one. Cheapest option would be to get my 3 acres fenced in & seeded & a shelter built. Definitely doable but it’ll take time as I’m not married with only one income. But right now my focus is on becoming more self sufficient food-wise.
Off topic, and no offense, but please vote conservative when you get to TN; I’d hate for our states to turn into shitholes because Californians keep voting like they did to make California the mess it is...I know I shouldn’t assume you lean liberal, but you said southern CA suburb, & if you’re not one yourself, you’re surrounded by them lol

    • @Carriesue1982
      @Carriesue1982 3 роки тому +1

Sarah H No the politics are the exact reason why we’re leaving and going to Tennessee, tho I also want to move because I’m tired of how insanely crowded it is here.. I am from rural Michigan and moving here was a huge culture shock lol. Politics aside I love all the natural beauty and things to do in California, we can see coast, desert and wilderness all within a few hours drive but when we have to drive thru a sea of traffic just to do anything it gets tiring, then there’s the drought, water restrictions and the awful wildfires.. it’s time to go. That does give us an advantage buying property because houses here are stupid expensive and we’ll probably be able to pay for a house in full over there.. my husband makes a decent living with 6 figures but here we still live like we’re lower middle class.. we are hoping for a better quality of life in TN and don’t worry we do not vote liberal lol. I hope you realize your dream of a horse someday! I never thought it was ever going to happen for me, I won’t ever take it for granted this opportunity!

Should note, she says that boarding in her area is $100-150. In my area, it's around $400. I tallied it up at one point, and just care, feed, board, vet, vacc/wormers, etc, was close to 9-10k. Horses are *expensive.*

Remember that adopting a retired horse is always an option! Contact an outfitter or ranch or pound! Many people are willing to part with their elderly horse for cheap. The fear those people have is that sometimes people will buy cheap elderly horses and work them to death, but if you just want a pet rather than a working horse, assure them you’re not going to work it too hard, and you’ll save a horse from the glue factory or the gun.

Don't go out and buy the first horse you see, get someone knowledgeable that you can trust. Buying a horse is more complicated than buying a vehicle. If you get a lemon vehicle, you can trade it in. A bad horse can be sick, need big vet bills or be mean and hurt someone. I don't mean to be a Debbie downer, but she just hit the highlights. There are unscrupulous dealers in horses, too. And lessons are a very good idea, you learn to ride but you learn proper horse care and if horses are not cared for properly they can get really severely sick, severely quickly.
