my favorite tip for a month without spending: use what i already have: food, beauty products, cleaning supplies and then clean out the freezer, clean out the pantry, clean out the bathroom closet and make a list of what needs to be restocked (just the things i really use and like)
and I get a really good feeling from a non-spending period. No stress of shoping, no time losing to running around to get everything,
January is a great month to do deep clean and deep declutter instead of buying. Get house back in check to start the new year.
Trying to do that this month in December so I’m set for January and have things already on hand come no spend
I turn 60 next month. Yay. I can relate to the alcohol thing.. my Roth journey began in my 30s. Stopped when life happened.. Two young kids. Divorce &Job loss. Divorce finalized and job loss all within 2 days.. that was a rough week! I began to max my Roth in my mid 50s. So I'm sure I'm way behind.. but it all turning out okay. I'm blessed beyond! Have a nice day everyone!
So glad you are here Mary! Thanks for sharing with us!
Kate, I watch you each week. It helps me be mindful of my goals. The old saying" birds of a feather flock together" comes to my mind. When I surround myself with like-minded people about setting a budget and sticking to it, reaching goals, saving, etc. This helps me stay on track. Thanks so much.
Janice! YESSS!!!! Thanks so much. Love seeing you each week!
yes, time for me to wean off my 'unboxing and beauty box friends' and hang out with 'save & invest friends'
Our microwave died the other day. At least this means it's less likely to die in January, because it's a brand new one now!
YASSS! :):) It's always something right? But at least it's Pre-January! LOL!
Good morning Kate definitely doing no spend January I have three low spend months per year no spend each last week of a month
Did you get a good on the new microwave?
@@elizabethbarrett5303 not particularly.
You talk about shopping ones home. When our microwave died, we shopped our neighbors garage. We saved and he had some cash.... Some people have stuff
I’ve definitely cut back on alcohol, not just to save money but for health reasons too. I watched a long video by a doctor about what alcohol does to you, the main premise was that no amount is healthy. I admit it scared the crap out of me. I still have a glass of wine on occasion. I feel better and save money as well.
I can totally relate to the alcohol thing! I used to be able to hold my alcohol well and really had fun. Now it’s pretty easy for me to give it up because it makes me feel so junky if I have more than one. Glad I’m not alone 😅
I can relate. Used to be fun, but now the ride is not worth the fall. 🥴
Another great video, thank you so much! Our favorite thing to do in a no spend is to REALLY take care of the things we already have that we constantly take advantage of. We clean them, repair or maintain them if needed and generally appreciate them for the Blessings they are. Giving Thanks to The LORD for all He has done xx
LOVE THIS!
To spice those January meals up, explore side dish recipes using corn, green beans, carrots, and cabbage. Skip the fresh herbs and use dried instead. Use canned or frozen corn, green beans, and tomatoes. Fresh onion and garlic are cheaper than dried flakes most times. Skip the Rotel tomatoes and very finely dice a portion of a hot pepper (use gloves, freeze extra finely diced), sime inuinm sime soicesm and a house brand of tomatoes instead.
Explore the open bottles of sauces, condiments, and things in your refridgerator door. Look for recipes that will use them up.
Explore dishes, salads, and desserts that use rice. If youve got a lot of pasta, do the same for pasta. Look fkr tje inexpensive bags of 10lb and 8lb of potatoes then cook them using a new recipe or method; or one younhafe t had fir a while.
Quick breads and muffins both sweet (contains sugar) and savory (for eating with dinner). Most newer recipes contain additives a basic recipe does not. As a starter, look fkr a 4 ingredient Irish Soda Bread recipie then staet looking at all the other versions out there both sweet and savory.
Great reminders!
You type too fast like me!😂
Yes, my capsule grocery list includes eggs, frozen veggies, ground turkey, burger patties, milk. I too being older cannot consume alcohol at night as it disrupts my sleep. Great tips for no spend as always!
Bought at a local consignment shop four great throw pillow that have TOTALLY updated, upgraded, and refreshed the couch in our great room. It has made an amazing change in the couch, the look of the overall room, and my feelings towards them. I sold the four pillows that were previously there. Win, Win! Merry Christmas, Debbie
Thank you for the great video... a couple of things ... when the "new" customer promotions are going on, I contact my providers and discuss my options to lower my monthly fees and , so far, the provider has given me the same promotion as a "loyal" customer... mind you, I do shop around and always do this when the other providers are also doing their promotions so I have an out... I just did this with my internet/phone provider and not only saved additional money on my monthly bills, I even got additional data for free. As for the food capsule, I like the basics plus protein... you can do anything with eggs, butter, cheese, flour, milk/cream (or alternative - unsweetened) and some protein/veg of choice. I also always have dry beans and rice in my pantry... These items with some basic spices/yeast, baking powder and baking soda - you can make almost anything.
Thank you so much Nancy!
Great message!
We (Sue and I) are sort of semi-no spenders and semi-minimalists but we are, and I'm soo happy to say this, we have become "super savers" and uber budgeters. For us the key to becoming frugal and mindful of our money, saving for a rainy day is having a real honest budget. We were probably 2 years into our debt free journey before we got down to it and crafted our budget. Our journey would have been many months shorter if we had put our budget front and center.
Hi Kate- I have been following you for probably 2 years now. I love your tips! I decided I need to do a no spend January. Unless it is a necessity, I don't need it. I have a vacation at the end of January so I will commit to not spending for my next credit card cycle. This is going to be hard for me. I am a sucker for a good deal and also stress shop.
As for drinking, I decided to quite when I turned 47. It was not doing anything for me so I quit one day. Here I am over a year later and doing great. It has reduced our dinner checks when we do go out for a nice meal not to mention the costs we save monthly for not feeding this habit. I went AF for my daughter's bachelorette party, her wedding and every dinner and holiday not missing that glass of wine in my hand. AND to keep my hands busy, I started to crochet and got pretty good at it. Now, yarn shopping is a problem but I have enough stock to get me through no spending for a month. Wish me luck!
GOOD LUCK MARY! You've GOT THIS!!!
I shop like this as well but never heard or thought of it being a "capsule" grocery list.. Eggs, cheese, some kind of bread and ground beef and coffee. We have a deep pantry and freezers (we live on a mini farm and have chickens, beef and goats) so I only shop loss leaders 90% of the time. Saves me big time. Also do Breakfast for Dinner a few times a month which saves $$
I don't drink much at all. I have quite a collection but its just me and my husband and he does not drink at all. I loved going to wineries and would usually do "free tastings" and then pick up a bottle but I hate to open a bottle and have it go to waste. Guess I'm saying I need a drinking partner. LOL.
My favorite money saving habits are: the auto save feature on my checking account, online grocery ordering and pick up, and a daily budget to stay within.
I’m also working on my sinking funds…
Thank you so so much! And I LOVE that habit!!!!!!
I am working on my sinking funds too
Happy Frugal Friday! I’m always amazed at how many more meals I can get out of my “empty” fridge. We are doing a pantry challenge to help clean out the excess. We have allotted approximately $40-50 a month for fresh produce.
As for alcohol, if you have issues with it by all means don’t drink. But with that said, it is the quality of what you are drinking that is affecting you more. The cheap crap will make you sick, higher quality stuff doesn’t affect you the same way unless you over consume. It is one of things that it makes sense to spend more money on.
Thanks! I just added tortillas to my grocery list. I already have the cheese. I can put Anything in a quesadilla! They're my favorite!
It may be a no-spend winter for me if not the whole year. I'll still need a few basics but I'll be calling it no "extras."
My biggest problems are subscriptions and buying stuff on Amazon. I love tracking those packages.
But I can put those things on my Wishlist and see if I still want them later. Often I don't.
My fav too!!!!
Thank you for encouraging everyone to use a budget! It has changed my life in so many positive ways. I tend to hop in the car an an almost daily basis. To save on gas money, I'm going to consolidate my errands to a once or twice a week trip. Thanks for all your great ideas! ❤
Love this Sharon! You are so welcome! So glad you're here!
Dry January changed my life. Highly recommend- and yes, way easy to save major bucks. I overhauled my entertainment budget- that's worth a whole episode!
I google ingredients for recipes all the time !! It’s amazing what you can make !
YASSSS!!!!
I love your weekly videos to keep me on track. I did have to order something for my doggies, but it was on sale, so I was pleasantly surprised and was able to use a coupon that I had from my last order (win, win!).
I am planning on doing no-spend January and I am very thankful that my mom decided to bring a cooler full of meats, when she came to visit before Thanksgiving. Eventhough my husband is a butcher, we will be able to use up all these meats this month and into January and save on our grocery bill 🙂 I am hoping this year goes better than last year!
YASS Lyla!!! (and thank you! I love seeing you each week!)
I am digging through my condiments and using up the rarely used one's for flavoring my meals. Add Buffalo sauce to tomato paste to top a meatloaf. Use the heels of bread toasted and seasoned for breadcrumbs or croutons. To not feel deprived during a no spend months, do simple delicious food. I make jello with orange slices (halo, or tangerine size)in it. Then get whipped cream, a small dollop, and everyone is happy. Add chicken broth to a bag of frozen vegetables, and you have soup. You can throw in rice or pasta to make it more filling.
My capsule grocery will be going to Sam club and get a rotisserie chicken already cooked and from there I have three days worth of meals. I do a this since I am empty nester and I do not have a huge grocery store bill anymore. I also buy bigger purchases on the fruit and veggie fresh and buy them in the freezer. When I need them I have them to just cook or let them thaw out. I also buy bulk on the blueberry muffin 6 for 5.00 same them put them in the freezer and take out what needed for a lite breakfast. I do this type of capsule grocery list also help out budget for the month since these are the staples usually every week or every other week. 😊
LOVE IT!
Going into my first no spend January. I tend to be a project person. Buy this extra thing to do this with it. To keep myself occupied planning on cleaning out spare bedroom, outdoor sheds, re-organizing Christmas decorations, purging, packing up stuff not in use. Only extras will be to buy more plastic storage totes, moving bags and vacuum bags. We need to be more ready to move out of our house to avoid the stress and last-minute problems.
I’m doing No Spend January too! I’m also doing January-March. I’m preparing for a move to Texas, So I really need to save and be more strict.
Aside from contacting your utilities to lower charges, get on their budget program so you know exactly how much your bill will be each month
Happy frugal Friday 👍 No spend January 2024 has struck a cord with the KSquad 👍 It shines through how much you like this Kate 😊 How is Mr Hanum doing on medication? 😻
Thanks so much Sandra! Mr. Hanum has some good and some bad days, but mostly good right now. My sweet first born babes:)
I am close to sixty. I lived a frugal life but was never able to save due to family responsibilities. Now i am saving and i regret not at least saving a little
Just preparing for my no spend January. Spend yesterday afternoon sorting out am my Christmas sets cards left from last year and realised I have enough that I don’t need to buy any this year. I am using December to have a good sort out and inventory of the things I have stocks of and making a not of things that really need using up first. I feel that in doing this I am setting my self up for even bigger savings in January. I am hoping to be able to top up my saving by about £500.
Love this!
😂 I am same.. but haven't found my Christmas card stash in. My basement just yet.
I don’t really do no spend January as it’s the summer here (Aus) But my plan for 2024 is to not buy anything unless for an outing and I have a cruise in May.
When I’m trying not to spend I don’t look at it as I’m not allowed to spend, I don’t want to spend. And I remember I have everything I need to be happy and being grateful helps too, I don’t just focus on the end goal, it’s a way of life, content and stress free, that’s always my goal. I would rather use the time to relax, have some wind down time, to just breathe and spend time with family. Do some day trips to the beach. Detox from December lol
One of the best tips
I have for a no spend January is to NOT overspend on Christmas. I have a premade list of who and what I am buying for at Christmas and stick to it so there are no surprises come January. Of If I can’t pay it off at the end of the month, I don’t buy it. I also eat out of my pantry the entire month using up items I purchased as loss leaders or sales during the fall. (Except for fresh produce or perishables.) It’s fun to try and come up with meals using what i already have. Thanks Kate for the video!
YASS!!!!
For us, January is about playing with and using the Chrstmzs presents just received. It is a time to finish up incomplete projects, projects purchased for but not begun, create projects to use up left overs from previous projects, and do projects that use what we own. We also begin spring cleaning 'cause no one wants to do cleaning when the sun is out in the spring.
Winter time is the right time to do "spring cleaning."
Sounds like a great plan!
Thanks Kate. Happy Savings in No Spend January K-Squad and a very Merry Holiday and 2023! ❤🎉❤
YASSS!!! Thanks Judith!
My favorite is use up pantry/ freezer food before buying more.
The food capsule is a brand new concept for me. As a single person, I feel like I am doing something similar to reduce both food waste and costs.
My tip for saving on groceries is stocking up on frozen vegetables when they are on sale. When I run out of fresh vegetables, instead of going to the store, I create meals with frozen vegetables to stretch my groceries further. Really excited to see what additional savings I can make this year with your tips and tricks.
YASSS!!!!
Hi Kate ❤ my health insurance went up I also took out life insurance my husband will be 60 im 53 I feel that's important only thing there taken 122.00 a week out of my pay im low income I have to tighten the reins but I have my 1000.00 emergency fund and a cash savings I add what I can❤
yassss!
Gonna reduce my wine intake for sure this January, I have already started and am proud of me!
Proud of you too! Way to go!
Kate, you make being mindful of where our money goes fun!
When we started to get our financial act together it was really my idea Sue wanted to do this but I'm one of those individuals that once I get into something I go all in. So my going all in was a bit much for Sue so she was happy to let me take control. To get our food budget down I decided the best course of action was for me to take over most of the food prep. That meant I had to teach myself how to cook.
A couple hundred meal flops later I can at least boil water LOL! Anyway, we do a lot of our shopping at Aldi and the rest at WalMart. Sometimes I will take 10 or 15 minutes on an isle and look at things that I normally don't buy and sometimes I will pick up something not knowing what I'm going to do with it. This week I bought a jar of curry sauce, I don't know what I'm going to do with it, we have never made anything with it but I'm going to figure something out, something different and at $2.65 a jar not too much money if it flops.
Thank you so much!!
We don't understand with our cell phone company, been over decade & rarely get deals. Hape with Allstate because we are grandfather policy & would pay more, but very happy with our home & car policies.❤
I got my crap together today... I got my snowball together to get back on track in 2024. Already paid off 2 credit cards because I had the money in my account. Shredded both of those :)
YASSSS!!!! WAY TO GO!!!
Breast chicken, minced meat,or pork pieces, mixed with a veggie and a carb, some with a sauce. Also vegetable soups,or cream soups; for breakfast cereals, apples for snacks, and for treats or sweets I make a simple dough that I fry and eat with jam,or sugar,or pancakes.
YASS!
I called an insurance broker and saved 55% on my car insurance and got better coverage. I also switched to Mint mobile for my cell phone.
YASSS!!!! Wow! Great savings!
I definitely can shop in my own home...etc. Switch uo some stuff. Create a fresh new look. Will definitely cheer me up and save money.
Hi Kate! We are thrilled to have moved from a condo to a single family home! January will be the start of a strict budget for myself ( always) as well as my husband ( never REALLY been on one!). Pray for us!😃😃😃 Seriously I keep telling him that on a budget he will realize he has MORE $$$ and will😍 it. Love your hoodie!!!😍😍😍
YASSS DEBBIE!
My capsule grocery list includes low-carb tortillas, tortilla chips, shredded cheese, canned tuna, pasta, and salsa!
Tortillas heck yeah! Pasta, rice, whatever meat is on sale, cheese, frozen veggies, beans, yogurt & eggs.
Something I did that seems simple but I was putting off is actually paying all the bills I had stuffed back into the envelope. Online bills are easy, but those unexpected paper bills like medical stuff were just to easy to ignore. How stupid of me to let 1 for only $20 go to collections!🤦🏽♀️
No more in 2024!
🙌❤️
Love your idea of capsule meals. Just beginning to incorporate it into my meal plan. Less food purchased, less waste.
Thanks so much!
Yes actually alcohol is something I stopped years ago at 58 I have no desire to have it
really excited about NSJ…I normally spend at least one month’s income on Christmas, but this year i spent much more than that…AND took over a week of unpaid leave (plus used up the rest of my PTOs too)…so I am planning on not even do GROCERY shopping other than milk, eggs, and bread, and maybe carrots and lettuce. I am stocked up on staples, including canned fish and meat.
If im lucky, I might be able to save enough to get my brakes done…which are WAY overdue!
PS planning on having a NS MARCH as well!
Can't wait!
Capsule foods almond milk, cereal, turkey meat, cat snacks, bread, veggies, eggs, turkey sausage
Homestead exemption on house taxes
Check out your state. Saved 2500 a year.
Did you know vets also get tax relief in Maine and other states
Hello, I am new. Hope and Larry sent me. 😁🙏😊
Thanks for subbing! LOVE HOPE AND LARRY! I'm so glad you are here!
Kate could you do a video on capsule meal ideas? I’m doing no spend January with all of you.
I will put this on my list ❤️ I’m so glad you are joining us for No Spend January🙏
Great idea - capsule grocery list for January!
Hey Kate....I don't have any particular Goals to reach for this time around...But by not spending this time around will be doing it this time around...Thanks a bunch for all the tips you've been giving us all this time...😊
I changed insurance companies and saved over 800$ per year.
42 years young here and yes totally agree on the alcohol thing ! No time for that!
YASS!
Great tips. No spend January, since I found extra fill in pantry items on clearace yesterday.
YASS!
I am 55 years old can relate about alcohol not doing what it used to do
Before paying a medical bill, call and ask if they offer a prompt pay discount. If you are paying in full, they may give you a 10% discount.
@frugalfitmom has hundreds of videos on how to save on food! Love watching Christine.
She's great!
@@KateKaden I love her energy and hundreds of money saving tips!
All excellent suggestions Kate, thank you. I am looking forward to a lot of things in January. No spend, better diet etc. Hugs to Kaden.
YASSS Sue!!!! :) Always so happy to see you!
Wash the walls and everything
my capsule meals are sloppy joes, salad with lunch meat and taco spaghetti
i laugh at capsule wardrobe.....that was a store called casual corner back in the 90s.
last week i went to the bank and had a good talk with the banker on how to open an account but actually not having a card for it. i already have an investment insurance plan but i found it a good idea to open a notice account and following a tip from another youtuber audience member, i transfer in it any euro over the 50 or 00s - rounding up my running account every few days and adding that money in the notice account. not having easy access to that money helps me save and not really spend it on impulse. i had great no spend sept and oct only to go overboard with what i had saved in november- puff! so yeah having an account without easy access helped and like kate said a few months ago, i made a new all year 24 budget, noted the expenses and already trying to save on the beginning of the week or month rather than what is left at the end
You can put in even more in your Roth IRA in 2024.. &CD rates are increased!!
My capsule has maize flour, green leafy vegetables and animal protein
Good morning and Happy Friday😊😊😊😊
I have definitely slacked off on the Alcohol. I can buy a small bottle of wine and it will last 3 to 4 days
Nice!
Smart video as usual!! love this your great Kate!! Sher.
Thank you so much Sher!
Yep! The body doesn't care for alcohol the older you get!
Right? LOL. My body is like...eh...pass.
My merlot wine does my body good
Set up your savings accounts to have automatic deposits every single month! You won’t miss it and it really adds up!👍
I'm in!
I am doing another year of NO SPEND JANUARY!
YASSS Katherine!
KATE, giving up alcohol and saving a fortune! Exactly as you said, the older I get, the less it does for me. Feeling so good AND have more money in the budget. Maybe save up for an extra special vacation with Rosie and her brother this summer…?
YASSSS!!!!!!
A couple of things in my capsule shopping list are eggs, yogurt, string cheese
YESSS!!! Eggs are one of my favs!
Dont know how i got unsubscribed, but i re subscribed.
YAY! Glad you're back!
Happy Frugal Friday, happy your last video did so well ❤
Thanks so much!
I'm not renewing Amazon or CVS Carepass!! WHATTT!! yep.
Pasta and sauce
For the last couple of years, I have been tracking every penny on an Excel spreadsheet, just working on paying everything off to be debt-free. Tracking every penny sure shows you where you are overspending. Savings is not so good, do you have a suggestion for a good savings account a little challenging to get to?
Can't wait!!
Count me in for No Spend January! In November, hubby and I spent $0 on food, and the freezer still looks full! I'm😮 psyched!
I don't even need to buy clothes bc I've been blessed and gifted with a couple of bags full.
Great video, Kate, thanks for your ideas and encouragement.
Thank God i dont spoke or drink alcohol or take drugs so i am economical
Smart❤
Is the first time to me
Welcome!
Also, I do online surveys to earn Amazon gift cards and other incentives which has helped to reduce my Christmas shopping spending!
Alcohol is not worth it! 34 and it hits differently.
Food and streaming services are where we get off the rails.
Thanks so much for sharing with us! Happy Frugal Friday!
My first year of no spend Jan. Trying to start my er fund
YASS Tami! Let's do this!
Im a 25 year old teacher and let me tell you, you age fast when teaching. I can no longer drink or party past midnight because it takes me two complete days to recover. Pathetic? Yes. Healthier? Absolutely.
Why would my bank refuse to give me a Savings Account?
Really? Did you talk to them about it?
@@KateKaden No, I didnt think to ask why.
✅
I’m the best DD anymore. Between my age and my meds, just not interested or worth it.
Kate, I love bugging my set bill people. Last year I ditched my satellite dish and moved to Sling. 111. a month down to 47. a month. Verizon phone down from 101. a month unlimited to prepaid with several discounts to 37. a month. Best one yet was two years ago I got on the phone with Windstream my WIFI provider said I was leaving them and I got them to give me all kinds of discounts and my WIFI bill is $1.05 a month which is only the tax. Yes Kate, one dollar and five cents a month going on two years now. Do I brag about this? HECK YEAH.
This year I am prepared for no spend January and have even started by using my Christmas as a starting point. I have made stuff for my ladies groups that I belong to, a few gift cards and made things for my family. Total cash outlay for Christmas this year is less then $100 cash, all the rest is sweat labor, labor of love.
Capsule Grocery item for me is cheese, Ritz crackers for snacks, meals for one are pretty easy for me so I keep my pantry stocked with things I eat all the time,
Merry Christmas Kate and KSquad
I’m asking for gift cards this year.
Hi K Squad. I’ve been watching and keeping up. I just haven’t been commenting. You all know I’ve faced death, beating stage 4 cancer. Also, I work in nursing where I see people at the end of life, minimal stuff crammed into one room. It really woke me up! We don’t need MOST of the stuff we have. Sell it! I’ve been selling my Hallmark ornament collection on eBay. Why? I can’t take it with me when I die. I am sick of storing and dusting it. I am just done with the extras. MOST IMPORTANT: I want memories and freedom from working asap vs debt. Make savings more fun than buying crap we don’t need. PERIOD!
Love ya Gert!
Love your idea of capsule meals. Just beginning to incorporate it into my meal plan. Less food purchased, less waste.
Hi Kate :) when I started my direct deposit from work, I also set up my savings. I have 25 dollars automatically sent to my savings account every week. You don't really miss 25 dollars, but it ends up about 1200 dollars in one year!
YASS!!!! WAY TO GO!
