- Emergency Landing on Cargo Ship Alra by Sea Harrier ZA176
Remarkable news footage on the recovery of Sea Harrier ZA176 and Sub-Lt Ian Watson after the Alraigo docked in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, June 1983.
.
In 2007, Britain's National Archives released a number of Royal Navy files, and the second inquiry report was finally made public. Noting that Watson had completed only 75 percent of his training before he had been sent to sea, the board blamed Watson's inexperience, and his commanders for assigning him an airplane "not fully prepared for the sortie," a reference to radio problems. Nonetheless, Watson was reprimanded and given a desk job.

No mention of the amazingly skilled pilot who'd managed to land that white van there earlier.
lololllllllllllooooooooooool
hahahahahaaaaa... his name was Jim Lovell... hahahaaa...!!!
me
his name was daniel , back at landin the white vans
Massimo O'Kissed
lmfao
The ship's Captain is thinking - " so we're an aircraft carrier now?"
The crew of that ship is thinking.. we are not trained but we are going to war.. 😰😰😰
Every vessel is an aircraft carrier if you're brave enough.
Lol
Lmao
@@Fr4ncM my canoe is an aircraft carrier lol
Just imagine the poor van owner talking to his insurance company:-
*Where was the van when the accident happened?*
“It was parked on a ship in the middle of the sea”
*what? So what drove into it?*
“Well... a British Harrier jump jet landed near it, then rolled back on top of it”
*Sir - call back when you’re sober!...*
We do not cover anything like this
🤣🤣🤣👍
Mours mutual insurance
That's fucking amazing! Laughing my ass off thinking about it.
Lol this is the comment of the year
Nothing to be embarrassed about. This shows off the versatility of the aircraft and the skills of the pilot. Things are going to go wrong from time to time and it is a mark of character and competence to see how well you deal with it.
"Hello, boss? Guess where I'm calling you from..."

W stands for win.
They are to laze to type the whole thing.
Haha, no problem.
What does L mean?
"I have always found standard carrier landings to be quite boring." - *Lt Ian Watson*
That ship captain was like "I'm keeping this shit fuck you navy"
or "I am the navy now!")
look at me. I'm the navy now.
i hope he just threw up the deuces
Nah he was claiming the ship for the Empire
mikeymarmalade
What, the Hackney empire. That's all that's left of the empire.
Shipping insurance company : “would you like our extra total cover”
Van owner: “nah basic will do”
The owner was thinking, what could possibly go wrong in the middle of the ocean

What logic? These jets hover you know

"oooohh shit!....this isn't the carrier"
My husband saw this plane yesterday at Newark museum, in restored condition, what a great story for you to pass on to your children
+iced ink wow very mature...
Looks like he is so young he would have to ask his mum's permission to take the car.
***** and you are one
then he'd do something like forget to fill the tank
Michael Grey that's the point every GOOD pilot is supposed to calculate (mathematics) his fuel and that shows you how far you can actually fly with this amount of fuel and he has fucking coordinations or can't he read a fucking map
***** what are trying to say
+starbanger I guess their women must be very frustrated.
The plane was salvaged and placed back into service, and was retired in 2003. The pilot was placed on desk duty, but returned to flight service, accrued approximately 3000 hours of flight time before retiring in 1996
"I hear you have a rare Pokémon on board, Captain"
The video says this is an embarrassment for the British but it's exactly this kind of cockup that makes us proud.
Saved himself as well as a very expensive plane. He should be promoted.
I think it's funny as hell. Like something out of a Month Python skit
Valami Izé of course the knowledge that led us to develop systems to protect from these kinds of things comes from incidents like this. How often is it nowadays that something like this happens?
Plus that merchant ship captain can add to his CV that he once captained an aircraft carrier 😁
Trouble with aircraft carriers, as opposed to a land based airstrip, is that it ain't where you left it when you come back !!!!!
Wow the Royal Navy is tough. Send him to sea with only 75% of his training, give him a plane when he's not prepared for the sortie and then when he gets himself into trouble but amazingly saves the plane, he's reprimanded and give a desk job.
Reprimand and desk job are what the news was told to say to keep with the early 1980's public opinion & stiff upper lip of the then ex-forces & old walrus moustaches of WW2/Korea/Suez/Malaya eras still alive back then quiet - aka a cover to lessen media back-lash before/while secret negotiations for recovering the aircraft.
Yep, gave me a loaded nato SLR at 16 and sent me walking the streets.
@Jacob Zondag I was very surprised that he gave an interview and assumed he had been briefed.. Apparently not.
@@M3rVsT4H no, he was actually.
Two thumbs up to that skilled pilot, that must have been one hell of a difficult thing to do.
But also imagine the crew of that ship going "EH, what is that plane doing here, he's not certainly going to LAND is he?"
may be the merchant ships crew thought this guy is a kamikaze pilot
I would have thought he hailed them & told them he was coming in to land, whether they like it or not lol
Probably thought; it was pizza delivery.
It's not delivery, its Digiorno!
What was the 'landing fee'?
I was on Crash and Smash when this happened. I was on the Pickup and Transport Crew which bought it back to Yeovil. Excellent skills by the pilot.
John O'Connell I worked as a rodeo clown back in eighties.
the plane doesn't appear to be a total loss, even if only for spare parts and the pilot is alive and well... I'd say that it's a good day
ZA176 actually went on to serve another 20 years until Sep. 2003, when it was purchased by the Newark Air Museum.
www.targetlock.org.uk/seaharrier/za176.html
Robert brown if it's a landing you can walk away from it's a landing
Stanley Burgess 1:23 major damage
The ship's crew and owner's received £570,000 in compensation. Watson was reprimanded and demoted to desk duties but resumed his flying career later and spent almost 3000 hrs flying time....see wikipedia (sea harrier ZA176) for details...
He shouldn't have got in trouble. He saved the plane, now that's better than ditching the damn thing in the sea.
Not necessarily. That might've caused a lot diplomatic inconvenience, of which would lead to a lot of explaining about the presence of that plane/ship and could cost money, enough to buy a new plane.
Not to mention he saved his own life taking the action he did. He would have died if he had to ditch it at sea.
You can't guarantee he would have died if he'd ditched it. Besides, he easily could have killed himself and potentially some of the crew of that ship, severely damaged the ship or it's cargo, etc. It's a damn impressive landing, but i can understand why his superiors are a little unhappy at the result, to say nothing of the diplomatic and "salvage" concerns.
you right ... i think the military life is over .......
He landed on a foreign vessel. A British military aircraft on a foreign ship. Abandoned at sea could be considered salvage and thus the property of the ship-owners had they made such a claim. Unless he stayed in the cockpit, which he did not......just to illustrate the complications that 'saving the plane' caused.
He lost his ship. That is all that needs to be said.
Say what you want to, that guy is a badass pilot! He landed it safely, no harm was done upon a single human, animal, or himself! We need more people like him in our world!
this may have been embarrassing for the pilot but at least saved is life and the aircraft, top man well done.
I'd say a credit to the training he received and his skill as a pilot.
Thats the Quality of a Good Pilot
From a fiscal perpective that man is a hero. Yeah some politicians had to jerk eachother, but a million something dollar aircraft was salvaged. Way to be!
Technical problems, not really the pilot's fault.
Special welcome to the Daily Mail worshippers^
reminds me of the day I landed an A380 on a macdonalds drive thru

FSX or x-plane?
woulda been so sweet if it didn't roll back onto that truck. imagine the ship pulling in with that jet perfectly posed, on top of the containers, like a pedestal.
And then taking off after refueling. That would have rocked.
And most likely melted the containers or contents. Harriers need to take off rolling on normal asphalt to keep from burning it.
I've personally watched 2 harriers take off vertically next to each other without rolling, and the pavement was fine
sacherjj asphalt would melt
I've seen Harriers take off and land vertically at airshows, but the tarmac is concrete, not asphalt.
Until I was deployed on the USS Tarawa LHA-1 with the USMC as one of their 8404's in 1986 I had no idea just how bad-ass the Harrier really was, but after deploying one of my favorite things to do was watching flight operations and specifically the Harrier! There are no words I know of that can appropriately describes what it's like to watch them fly...
I think he needs to get a fucking award !
The Sea Harrier was Amazon's first choice for home delivery, at least until this happened. Now they have drones.
Its amazon that this comment is 6y old, and we still don't have amazing delivery drones.
Amazing situation. I've never heard of this incident before. Many thanks to the crew of the cargo ship for unintentionally being that pilot's guardian angels.
"Mum, I'm calling from Santa Cruz!"
*"Oh, so you finally took vacation time?"*
"Well... Let's just say I 'caught a ride'..."
He should get medal, for saving tax money there.
Losing a plane cost more than repairing it.
***** I see. Thanks for the explanation.
yea, thats tricky..as the narrator says on the way back "serious diplomatic and legal negotiations were well underway" that sounds expensive !
I read that he was given a desk job for a while then put back on flight status. He eventually racked up 2000 hours in harriers and must have done an exchange program with the USN because he also did 900 hours in f18's. He retired in 2006. The harrier was also repaired and kept flying. So good result.
Just curious though, but what do Air Force pilot suppose to do when they stuck behind the desk?
Don't military have their own specific personnel to do desk duty(office work, I presume)?
Desk work for military pilots could involve a variety of duties but some of the most common ones would be managing maintenance, managing personnel of lower rank, and organizing training. They would still have to do at least a few hours of flight during a year to stay qualified but the majority of their duties could be on the ground.
Nothing more the guy could have done. Superb skill as usual from the RAF still even all those years ago! 👍
Save the queens sky's damn it
Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm pilot Not RAF.
What the hell are you talking about?
You actually think a non commissioned RAF FA could fly a harrier off a carrier???
Are you stupid?
He was an RAF pilot. Flying an RAF Harrier off a carrier warship. He wasnt delivering fuel.....😅😅
What are you talking about? RAF pilots do not fly off carriers - that is reserved for pilots of the fleet air arm only.
RAF pilots do fly off of carriers but the fact he was a sub-Lt being a navy rank kinda makes me think he was in the navy not the RAF!
Captain: "Look at me ! I am the navy now!"
Captain phillips reference
😂
Lol Barqad abdi
I'm mr meeseeks! Look at me!
That pilot deserves a nice little Christmas bonus.... Those Harriers ain't cheep
yeah...this happened over 30 years ago.....
As the description says, all he got was a reprimand and a desk job... I feel sorry for this guy
I don't know why he was reprimanded. He saved the plane after it let him down. He should have been praised for his skill.
Well he should have been able to navigate back to the ship even without radio contact. That's why they busted him.
It was likely his I.N.S. or it was a radio failed, since the old system used in the 'pre-elcteronic' early harriers & sea harriers uses one the radios to keep a rough fix on the ship - that and the RN-FA uses/used a Morse Code Positioning Beacon system to indicate the aircraft's relative position to the carriers heading.
"uh captain there is a plane landing on our ship":P
"I think I was fairly lucky to land it as well as I did."
What a G. So humble for someone who just stuck a landing that tight.
...it's the feigned sophistication in his speech as he struggles to explain himself that gets me, it's like a Carry On film!
Probably wasn't the best idea to talk to the press before debriefing with his superiors.
Feel sorry for the chap that owns the camper van though. Tricky enough when another vehicle hits you on the road but how do you sort out a jet aircraft coming down on your roof in the middle of the ocean....
Haha when you say it like that it's funny
Well, I should imagine that you call up your insurance company, and hope that they don't land a private helicopter on top of it...
Fuck him, white van man.
You get a nice big chunk of moolah from the government.
i think he did well to salvage the aircraft well done mate!
and thats a hard way to land!
LOL the pilot was so fuckin cool and calm about it xD... Brilliant. The sad part is the outcome of it, that is really quite harsh.
He did return to Flight status though later on :) .. Retired in 96.. Thats cool then xD.
thx for the update- I was curious after watching this-it was my 1st question.
Vanadeo ANY incident out of the ordinary is routinely investigated. It would be foolish NOT to do so. How else do they understand what went wrong ? Hell if you drive a truck into a ditch you can expect to sit down until the authorities ask some questions.
Vanadeo wat happend to him?
He retired in 1996 at the grand old age of 29
The Navy never found out about his part-time job delivering takeaways for Just Eat😃😎
Balls of Steel! Kudos to the Royal Navy Pilots!
This is just the navy doing their thing of laughing the RAF into corners by being awesome
The way the MoD handled this was a shame. He got a permanent black mark on his record because of a situation created by inadequate training.
More about bad maintenance and the bad decision to let such an aircraft fly and furthermore assign the non mission capable aircraft to a rookie.
H e l l o f a b e a r d ! !
Anon Nymous as the saying goes, you are only as good as your last fxxkup
That's how militaries work all over the world.
Boy! The things some people will do just to get a decent glass of sangria!!! NICELY FLOWN! GOOD PILOT!! I hope it works out for him! - Bob
I been on Aircraft Carriers when we lose a plane. We search for many days for it, never found either the pilot or Aircraft. We pushed on to our mission. Great job landing that plane. To all the pilots, who risk their lives, God Bless you. Keep you safe.
"the training we recieve is pretty good"
i before e...
Yeah pretty good. It got him right to the scene of the accident in one piece!
Jacob Zondag I don't see how radio failure relates to lack of training.
Then I fail to see anything that could have been done better on the pilot's behalf, except for a slightly smoother landing (of which was no doubt already bloody hard to do).
Yes we quite regularly practice landing on container ships
The guy finished Lt-Cdr in the Royal Navy after 18 years service and recycled in real-estate! In New Zealand! On his LinkedIn profile: 'A creative thinker who is able to extract that little bit extra!', he certainly did that day!
Truthseeker1515 so he's in nz now?
Given a desk job??? He should have been commended for saving the plane, when he could have ditched it. It surely wasn't his fault the radio wasn't working. I think he did the right thing.😊
"Reprimanded, and given a desk job" So he saved the aircraft, saved his own life through skilful flying..and they punished him!
Typical.
Gave military Intel....go to prison
can you image the shit ton of paper work that created
1 letter. ship back to UK scribbled roughly on an oversized a4 paper in big Capital letters .
Britain loves its paperwork over everything.
Couldn’t haul all the paperwork in one of those shipping containers. Put it in the drink and paperwork would have “total loss- replace with new” on it
I love your name
Jacob Zondag
And he finally managed to write himself back into dickpit.
Well atleast he didn't have to worry about exploding when he landed because he was running on fumes literally by luck...Good pilot to land it there takes patience and confidence within a spilt second and this guy knows how's to use it well...good man
Ian! Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing! This was a GREAT landing!☮️👍🇺🇸
Now thats what I call a Harri situation
Camaro Rick I've seen harrier
Camaro Rick that ship left the dock bald but returned much Harrier
You will find the aircraft at the Newark Air Museum in Nottinghamshire, England
“This is Maverick, Anybody seen a Carrier round here?”
It just shows that the harrier is a very impressive plane even for its age today.
The paperwork .....
I like how he explained what happened and the news anchor asked right after how did it happen 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
fake news.. that guys just spawn hydra..
I'm in tears... VERY underrated comment.

Shit here we go again!
Wonderful young man and a wonderful story.
That pilot is hardcore!!!
Funny thing is, this guy is my dad.
I guess we are related.(not)

+Ivan Watson Well you've got a pretty badass dad then. XD
***** Theoretically, you could also have an identical twin out there somewhere... Obviously not blood related; just looks.
And also, yay for necro'ing year old threads XD
my dad is batman
Lost nav equipment did a hell of a job finding a place to land.
This is where I appreciate UA-cam's recommendations...
A true British officer and gentleman-calm, reserved and dignified under near death circumstances and the skillful improvisation of an alternative place to land should get him promoted, not in trouble with his Commanding Officer.
somali pirates will never aproach that cargo shirt
They wouldn't touch that hair of yours either

I see! lol :-)
awesome pilot!
That harrier is now on display at Newark Air Museum in the UK.
Interesting story... the plane was saved and went on to fly until 2003. It takes a little research but the pilot was initially sent off to desk duty until it was determined it was equipment failures and that the pilot was sent out on a training mission after only completing about 75% of his required training. The pilot later went on to fly about 2000hrs in Harriers and about 900 in F-18s before he retired after about 25 yrs total service.
saved his plane..and the taxpayers money...and his life as well..the plane isnt a total loss even if it was only used for spare parts at this point
They repaired the plane, it flew until 2003 and is now at Newark Air Museum, UK.
@@Itapirkanmaa2 I've actually seen this myself.
The taxpayers that voted Maggie Scratcher into power and then she started this whole shitshow?
Masterpiece of avionics. Simply excellent.
Glorious work mate ! Beautiful landing ! They should of had a cold beer waiting for you !
British pilot: gasp!!! It's 4pm chaps time for tea (literally drops everything)
pilot: hi lads, can I park up some where?
ship: yes mate, drop it on that van. pmsl......
Such a brave and intelligent pilot!
Fantastic job done by such young lad! I hope he was awarded for saving millions of dollars with his ready wit!
Salvage? It's not like Spain and the UK were enemies, just give the plane back and ask for compensation for any damage or loss of earnings from having to return to port.
The international community is a strange one.
***** High blood sugar?
***** Please change your tampon. You are obviously correct, international salvage law is clear, there is no doubt about that. They ended up getting around 600K pounds for a 7 million pound aircraft. However, being correct doesn't entitle you to being a raging jackass. You lashed out at someone for no reason who was being polite and had a an actual question. You could have just explained the issue without insulting them. Being able to use Google properly doesn't give you the right to be an asshole. Fucking POG's....Never thinking shit through all the way.
***** Chill the fuck out dude
***** Why all the anger ? maybe you should refrain from commenting when you are High on drugs ....
~~It's not like Spain and the UK were enemies~~ Well there is Gibraltar ,British Overseas Territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean.
. . . and you thought FedEx is expensive. Wait until he gets the delivery bill.
Well done Watson well executed good on you airman I salute you.
The electronics can go out at any time and the pilot made the right decision to save himself and by GOD he even saved the plane , heck there's people who get disoriented and lost on the Ground and some because their smart phones dies out or malfunctions , , , the pilot saved the British Government a lot of money by saving plane and himself . . . It's not the first time or the last that a pilot will find themselves in a bad situation with only minutes or seconds to decide their fate . . . TO THE PILOT , , , YOU DID SOMETHING THAT WILL BE WRITTEN IN THE HISTORY BOOKS . . .
WELL DONE ! ! !
This aircraft was later flown as an FA2 and when retired was taken to Newark air museum nottinghamshire UK.
elementary, dear Watson.
The guy is a hero, reminds me of the Russian MIG pilots that landed his MIG in ASHA center without crashing it despite that it was on fire. The pilot kept it cool, went to the market for groceries and then took a smoke waited for cavalry to arrive..
LEGENDS! LOVE THIS..
Thats sick, pilot saved the reputation of the RAF.
He doesn't deserve to be demoted.
British Piloting and landing skills!!!
if it was any regular jet fighter, it would have end up in the ocean.
akupehsluarketatAR Obviously, how would he land something like that anywhere else?
The thin line between fame and fortune and the oblivion on that landing sticking
Best strange recommendation youtube has ever showed to me
Great job buddy
Beats going in the Drink with little to NO hope of rescue! Well done!
I'll bet the captain of that ship got a fair fright!.....The skill of this landing is something to behold......
Yo estaba en Tenerife en esa época y pude verlo en persona. Era una imagen impactante.

This is called royal landing... 😂😂😂
What a guy, big props 👍🏻
"Look at me... I'm the captain now"
Shouldn't let 12 year old kids fly planes.
No kidding, guy looked like he weighed 85 pounds
Better power to weight ratio :)
In many combat airplanes you're actually not allowed (or able to fit in the cockpit) if you're much more than 6 feet tall.
Being short translates into a shorter distance between your heart and your brain, which means you can better withstand G forces. So for pilots,it's a bit of an advantage.
He lost all contact with HMS "illustrious"... What more can i say! hahahaha
Losing comms happens all the time for a variety of reasons.
