It seems literally everyone in the entire world feels real cheeky about bringing up the acclaimed manga One Piece by renowned artist Eiichiro Oda, starring Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat pirates. I mean, we did it too, so we're not judging. We might as well just hone in on that non-existent connection a bit more. One thing to note, for anyone wanting to dispute the idea that landlords are bad: yes, there are good landlords. But the system is creates a major power imbalance and places most of the incentives on encouraging landlords to exercise that power over their tenants. (More specifically, landlords tend to make more money if they do less to maintain the property and restrict tenants from doing anything that might result in damage to the property, and of course by raising the rents as high as the market will permit.) There are people who are good enough to remember that renters are humans too, and just want a home they can live in and enjoy the way they want to. Lots of them. Most of them don't have enough money to own more than their own property, or choose to invest their money in other endeavours that require less active abuse of power in order to produce decent returns. But some of them are landlords, and thus there are good landlords. It doesn't fix the system, and it doesn't make the majority decent people who rise above the system.

have you heard of the game Unholy Heights? Its a newer game in comparison and has similar themes but really REALLY hits you over the head with them. You play as literal Devil the landlord of a shitty apartment for monsters and demons. You spend one phase of the game tending to their needs, giving them the furniture they want, making sure they get good jobs so they can keep paying rent, maybe even match some up and have them start families... That last bit is very important because later generations often have better stats than their parents. Better stats for what? Well for the tower defense phase of the game! Nearby townsfolk send all kinds of warriors and knights to kill the devil (you) and you send out your little tenants to fight back and hopefully they don't die horribly so they can keep paying you rent. There is no question that you are the bad guy in the situation and maybe I am the bad guy for finding it so incredibly addicting I bought it a second time when it was released on switch...

I’m finally catching up with Transparency vids and I’m so happy to finally have watched this gem! Landlords and the systems that empower them suck, and your close reading of One Piece Mansion illustrates why life as a tenant can feel dehumanizing. I was vaguely aware of One Piece Mansion, but for whatever reason, I always assumed it was a Japan-exclusive. I didn't realize it came to both Europe and North America. This game looks so wild; I ought to give it a try.

Another nice video, you are always able to find analysis in games that seem to initially not be made for it! Even though this game I will suggest isn't quite one of those games, I just want you to know that Racing Lagoon, a racing RPG by Square, exists.
I suppose it is our forté, hehe. Coming from backgrounds of art analysis and social sciences just kind of gives a certain skill set I think. We're lucky too that we can sit and discuss these things together to form ideas about what a game is truly about. Oh, and we have heard of Racing Lagoon. We'll get to playing it eventually, seems extremely cool :) thank you!

I like the idea that our viewers have begun to catch on to the idea that everything appearing in our videos could be a potential subject for the future. What is real and what is a red herring? Only time will tell, hehe 😏

There's a song called Sweet Float Apartments by mambo-P that has to have been inspired by this, they're such similar concepts! The music video has similar vibes artistically, which I do think is intentional, since that illustrator does vary her style depending on the project. What a cool connection.
Also, landlordism is a totally irrational system of housing distribition! Nobody would design it like this if they were starting from scratch. It's ridiculous.
Oda is a genius with this backstory. Nami being a landlord before getting adopted and transitioning in one piece is actually so peak and consistent in the story.

I know this might be kind of random, but is there a chance you could make a basic guide on transitioning? I mean, you look amazing and 101% pass + your voice is amazing
Hi, it's not that random, I totally get it. Coming out and transitioning is hard and confusing sometimes. I don't know if I am the right person to make a guide about transitioning though, personally. There are a few reasons for that. I am not entirely sure how I would describe my journey, because it involves a whole lot of trial and error. I am not even sure I am "done" either, I certainly don't always feel good about myself. But mostly because I don't think there is a way for me to make a guide that fits everyone since transitioning is such a personal and unique project. For me it has mostly been about finding out what I like to wear, how I wish to present myself and most of all to just accept myself more even during my bad days. And it's ongoing. My voice training has mostly just been me pitching my voice higher, focusing on speaking from the mouth rather than the throat, and doing this all the time until I slowly have shifted to whatever feels the most comfortable and natural to me. And that stuff takes time, years most likely. If you watch some of our oldest videos you can hear the difference very clearly. My point though is that it has been pretty messy for me, I kind of just let go of all my insecurities as best as I could and experimented until something stuck. I mean relatively speaking at least.
One thing I will say is that if you haven't started transitioning at all yet, that's probably the best place to start. Find out what is stopping you primarily and try to eliminate those doubts. I like to think of it like a staircase, every step of the way is another hurdle but as long as you can visualize and express what is holding you back it becomes easier to work through each one. Eventually you'll reach a threshold, that last step where it all makes sense and you let yourself walk out into the world as yourself. It's a bit metaphorical I suppose, but that at least helped me to work through my problems before I had the courage to begin my journey.
Anyway, it's not a guide or a grand video on the subject, but I hope I said something that might inspire you a little bit. You can do this!

This game looks pretty chaotic, but its pretty smooth when u get into the rhythm. Not gonna lie, I found about this game when trying to find One Piece games back in like 2008.
It can be pretty chaotic. Kiki had to record majority of the footage because she can deal with it better than I can. It's a bit to stressful for me, but cool regardless.

Haha... This has nothing to do with anything but... that plot is... every other widget game from he PS1 and Saturn. It is, in fact, not unlike the shell plot of an arcade puzzle game or a Bubble Bobble Clone... So why have I not played this? Driving me insane. Like when found Prop Cycle a month ago while hitting random on TvTropes, and was dead sure I had seen the machine once irl... Why? What? WHY? Like full, finished games falling out of alternate universes and into my lap to haunt me... WHY?!? O_O;
I love it, tho, because the way they got the subject matter past their managers and the higher-ups became the same reason it's such a good analysis of landlording. And if that's not vidjya gaems, I dunno what is. :v

I'm surprised you didn't also address the apparent concept of "family is more important than anyone else". ("Family" here can refer to any of those within your personal circle of closeness, of course.) The game seems to present Putica as the only actually meaningful person whose feelings and situation are of paramount importance. Polpo is essentially forced into his position, yet he accepts it without hesitation for the sake of helping his sister. He's not completely a villain here, he's just another person completely caught up in the insidious world he was born into. Kind of reminds me of when some people have to resort to renting out rooms just to keep surviving or support a loved one in need.
Polpo is not really forced into his position though. He was a landlord before Putica was kidnapped and he continues to be one afterwards. It's not like he is just renting out a room or two, he owns land and a whole building that he is continuously expanding. I think the fact that both Putica and Chocopape are just playing a game here, without regard for anyone else, says more than enough really. Putica even becomes a landlord herself in her scenario for no other reason than the fact that she is bored. Her and Chocopape are in the end however the only people here who then resign from this role, with Putica becoming a pop star instead and Chocopape essentially just her fanboy. But Polpo remains a landlord for no particular reason other than exploiting other people. I don't think there is much reason to excuse him, other than perhaps the angle that ignores real life implications and simply runs with the goofy exterior. Which is fine too.
