I love this! I've taught my young children to make the sign of the cross anytime they hear someone use the Lord's name in vain. I also add a "blessed be His Holy name" or "True God and True Man"- from the Divine praises... so that it becomes more of a prayer than an offence to The Lord. I plan on doing this immediately.
We now need a charitable 'script' to share with those in person... if you have one for us please, Fr.

I have done this, and told the channel producers the reason why I was unsubscrbing. Thank-you Fr. Mawdsley for adding the prayers of reparation. I often pray the 'Golden Arrow Prayer' in reparation to Our Lord.

Since 2020, when I came into the Catholic Church, every time I heard blasphemy against Christ I would say three times: "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, I worship you."

I like that you have practical suggestions. I myself the lords name in vain it work every day when I was stuck in impossible situation. I immediately regretted it. I don’t know what proper penance, in general I’ve tried to not use the Lords name over the past year or so. It’s not that hard

Excellent advice Father Mawdsley! I leave remarks on videos whenever this happens and will adopt the practice of saying a prayer. Thankfully, I don't watch many that would stoop that low...those I unsubscribe to if it is repeated.

I attended Church when I am physically able to . Since then I have found it increasingly difficult to hear blasphemous words . It’s amazing how the heart can be changed.

Discretely, but visibly make the Sign of the Cross. You needn’t be overly dramatic or say anything. Keep listening to them if that’s what your position calls for. The person could very well have no idea why you’re doing it. Eventually, they’ll ask and there’s your chance to explain in a respectful manner. Don’t make a big deal of it. Keep the topic on work or whatever task is at hand. Those of goodwill will accept the correction. People who fly into a rage, well, at least you know where they stand. Do your best to avoid them and if God’s honor calls for it, entirely separate yourself from them even if it means great sacrifice for you.
If it’s an acquaintance or family member, you could try ‘three strikes and you’re out.’ It worked with a cousin of mine who didn’t practice the Faith and had a foul mouth because of her friends. She asked for my help in cleaning her car, and proceeded to use God’s Name in vain along with other profanities for no apparent reason. I let one outburst go, but when she did it again, I told her firmly, but kindly, to watch her tongue and why. I let her know matter-of-factly that if it happened a third time, I would be leaving as I had other errands to do that day. About ten minutes went by and she deliberately blasphemed to test me out. I said nothing, just turned off the shop vac, and departed the garage. She was speechless for a few seconds, then ran after me into the house where I retrieved my purse and coat, bid my aunt and uncle goodbye, got into my car and drove away. The entire household was in an uproar with her cussing me out, threatening to kill herself, my aunt in tears and my uncle cajoling me to return because, “you know she can’t help it. She’s mentally ill. Whatever happens will be on my conscience, etc.” I made a point to pray the Divine Praises in reparation for sins of blasphemy. (Yes, my cousin WAS mentally ill, but she most definitely COULD control herself if she desired or it was in her interest!) It was worth having my family mad for several weeks. My uncle even called my mother, his sister, to complain. (I was 40 years old at that time!) After a month, my aunt invited me to come over after Mass for pizza. I accepted. Nothing was said about the incident and my cousin never once blasphemed or used profanity in my presence again. Problem solved. They’re all passed on now, so I hope my cousin passed in a better state than I left her that one day.

I love this video! Blasphemy started up in my neighborhood "Nextdoor" postings and I did comment telling them not to take Jesus' Holy Name in vain. It worked so far.
Jesus did say that the Golden Arrow Prayer of Reparation would overthrow the plans of "revolutionary men."

Fr. Mawdsley! Thank you for your help & guidance! I passed your video to others! I always do the sign of the Cross & ask God for His Mercy. I usually turn the blasphemous video, + switch after the first blasphemy. Sometimes, I am so tired at night, but I'll try with prayer & a decade of the Rosary.
I trained my grandsons to say O my goshhh!!... instead..with the emphasis on shhhh.. it's actually STOPPING and quieting the potential blasphemy. But I will add The Sign of The Cross, and as you suggest, The Hail Mary. Thanks for this Father. God Bless you. 🙏✝️🕊️🤱🩸.

I actually do leave a comment, saying that I enjoyed the video until they blasphemed and ask them to refrain and if not I will not watch further videos. Then I put the Divine Praises prayer at the end. It is so bad, can't even watch a cute animal video without hearing blasphemy!

Yes, and it's everywhere. This is a Judeo-Christian country. I ask myself the same question as your pup at the end! Do other countries do this? Do non-Christian countries take the name of their religious founder in vain? I've never heard it. It's so heart-wrenching to be at the grocery store and hear it up and down every aisle. I always say "Blessed be the Name of God" whenever I hear blasphemy. I definitely appreciate your advice, Father!
You can just say Christian Country. Leave the Judeo out.
You Tube "Shorts" are designed to ease the viewer into becoming accustomed to blasphemy. They do notice when people shut it off. The more times you shut it off, the longer you can view the shorts before they offer another objectionable (but amusing) post. They want you to start blaspheming, and you will-- if you love to be amused more than you love God's honor.
Holy face devotion and little office of the holy name of god is an antidote to the sin of blasphemy....

Amen! I'm constantly turning off so called "comedies" WHY do they think GD and JC are funny words? WHY? My adult son does this often, and I finish the sentence with, "I love You with all of my heart and soul Father. I'm so sorry"
He now stops himself saying it in front of me, because he doesn't want to hear me say how much I love our Father...

I hear this a lot at work, & I try to say "blessed be the name of the Lord" or something to that effect. It hurts my heart to hear God's name taken in vain. I also hate that I used to do it not realizing what I was doing. 😢

* I say it if I hear anyone use His Holy Name in conversation or anytime. If it's in a movie I turn it off right then! It's more offensive than any immoral scenes but I will not watch those at all. Many PG rated films today add this BLASPHEMY as if it's justified!! Best to stick with Catholic channels and
movies.

One question: what all is meant by "taking the Lord's name in vain"? Only if someone invokes the name "Jesus"? What about when people constantly punctuate their speech with "oh God!" That really bothers me but I'm unsure if it actually falls under this category.

What about the secular phrases with "holy" or " bless/ed". Are these phrases considered sins that should be avoided as well? I have often said h*ly sh*t. Not really thinking about it. Not trying to be overly pious or stick in the mud, just wondering.

I watched SSPX video concerning Vatican wolves banning Marian apparitions, which would mean also Our Lady of Fatima. Could you kindly comment your thoughts.
When I accepted a job at a Catholic Hospital, I made every effort to go to Daily Mass. Sadly, as I walked through the hospital hallways, I noticed a number of people using our Lord and our Lady's name in vain. Every time I witness that, I politely reminded them they are in a Catholic Hospital and please do not disparage our Lord or our Lady. As a new employee, I did not recognize my supervisors or CEO's. One day, I stopped my immediate supervisor and politely rebuked him for using our Lord's name in vain. He promptly alerted me to his position and he said, I have the right to fire you. I said, Yes you do have that right, but you don't have the right to take our Lord's name in vain. I politely walked away, expecting to be fired. When I got back to my office, I overheard him in another room talking with other supervisors and he said, Well, we obviously hired a Catholic! I took that as a compliment. Luckily, I was not fired. I never stopped reminding people, while employed there, to show reverence to our Lord and our Lady. God first always!
I suffer a measure of fear of man on this topic. My gut reaction is that this is "too much".
I know this is wrong of me. The name of Christ is holy, and blasphemy is a violation of the 1st commandment. Please, pray for me to have courage, and constancy in this manner.

I can’t tell you how many shows I’ve had to completely stop watching because of this. Whats irritating is it never adds to a shows story, plot or emotion. It’s senseless.
