It reminds me of the ice storm in Quebec back in '98. Huge sections of the electric infrastructure came crumbling down leaving millions of people without power, some for up to 3 weeks or more. Livestock froze in rural areas where there was no heating in farms. People were sheltering in school gymnasiums with cots lined up side by side. Water supply became contaminated due to lack of electricity. Some shelters had outbreaks of gastro from contaminated water. If you were lucky, you lived near a hospital where grids were re-established the quickest. The military came in to help re-build infrastructure and provide support for shelters. In Quebec, we are used to the long, cold winters, but the forces of nature are devastating even with preparation and equipment. I can't even imagine this with the pandemic in a region ill-prepared for winter.
In Washington state during ice storm some farmers went without electricity for two months. Lots of rural areas up to six weeks. The company I worked for offered shelter and showers to those in need. Many companies did. Of course no covid then.

It's definitely looking like the Divided States of America is going to be the 'new normal'. I hope the electricity goes back on before more people die, from Australia
