Everything you said is exactly why I want to go back to teaching community college once I finish my doctorate. I began my college journey at CC, and it's educators like yourself that make these institutions invaluable. Keep fighting the good fight.
Allison Hutchison 😍😍😍
Allison Hutchison Best place for us to do the most good!
You nailed the topic. I will begin teaching again. I was an adjunct professor at Rush Medical College.
It as if Comm College teachers might do well to be educational advocates that are tolerant to push ... but not shove.
be fair not firm. Maybe I should augment the curriculum to allow each "learner" to advance beyond the subject matter.
My background is EMS, paramedics, E.R., and crisis .... I would do well to "triage" and not profile or prejudge .. what I call 'pigeon-hole' persons.
Thereafter, I can share for the student to finish the coursework ... to follow the classwork .... but to follow their own (individual) yellow brick road ... of discovery and learning.
Peace to yu, Will
My man, great video. Just finished a masters and looking to teach at a community college. This video helped a lot.
Petition to have more school buildings than buildings that serve no purpose. For the well being of the community
How are you now?
You ever end up teaching?
I think its ridiculous that you need a doctorate to teach at the university level. Masters should be acceptable too. Everyone wants advanced degrees but the pay is just enough to survive.
A phd is an investment for the university that gives a scholarship. That's how they create and maintain prestige through specialization as reflected in publishing, which don't always have much real world application.
Does teaching happen at universities?
You can become a part time professor at a university with just a masters
Thank you for your dedication to the underdog! As a former CC student, and now holding an M.A. - I may not have made it here without educators who care like you do. It is always a pleasure to hear that your breed exist in higher education!
God I want to do this sooooo bad. My god I feel this as a passion!
I am a product of community college, and everything you've said is exactly why I'm going to come back to my community college as an instructor.
I feel that I'd like to teach the smaller classes , and don't really want to go into research work, teaching university level classes. I'd also want to make a a difference in people's first 2 years of college.
I truly appreciate your information and especially your enthusiasm for teaching 👏🏽
I am currently in my last year of sociology undergrad doing a project on potential career paths. I started my college career at community college and have always felt the desire to go back and teach there. This video was so inspiring! Thank you!
How are you now?
Thank you … former instructor at Pasadena City College … Bruce Wayne Gaines
I am teaching full time in high school Biology. I have a masters degree in education major in biology.
Am I qualified to teach part time in a community college?
Great points! Starting Grad School at age 31 this year, as a mother of 3, and so excited to work with CC students one day!
Absolutely fantastic and inspiring! Thank you so much for emphasizing that our job as community college teachers is to help those who are struggling the most to succeed!
Thank you for your work! I attended junior college before university because I was frankly too anxious to move away from home. It really helped me gain confidence and expand my imagined set of possibilities. Thank you for your work!
Community colleges uplift people and provide them with life skills, even if they never get a degree!
I am entering grad school to complete a master's of History. I intend to teach at my local community college. Any tips on getting hired? Considering Covid-19, are schools still allowing student teachers, internships, or shadowing? Is it helpful to work part time at the school (possibly at the library) while completing my master's program elsewhere, to "get a foot in the door"?
It will take a while to recover from COVID 19, but things should be opening up soon
Great job! I started at a community college and was fortunate to met a teacher who helped me gain confidence in my abilities. I went on to complete my Master's in Psychology and now plan to finish my career teaching at a community college so that I might inspire others and instill confidence in people so they can thrive and reach for their potentials.
So proud of you Kathy! Teaching is inspiring! Pass the torch!
Wonderful job!! You stated what CC is about and I am so happy I have the opportunity to teach at a CC in Michigan. I am looking forward to more of your UA-cam!! Any techniques you can give would be greatly appreciated.
You sound like an amazing and caring professor! I graduated from community college (: because it was most logical and most affordable! I’m now in the process of transferring to a 4 year university, to finish off with a B.A. in Sociology as well! (:
I don't think it's wise to pursue a career in academia. Too many people competing for too few jobs.
Steven Brown not in the technology/trades fields
Ross especially in tech fields tf you mean
Great information I plan on taking my first Sociology class this semester and I plan on switching my major actually to Sociology from psychology and I plan on switching my job career also from counselor to becoming a professor and even though I'm at the early stages of my exploring the major and the job market I'm looking forward to learning about The field.
I am trying to apply for a community college full time teaching position or student affairs
I appreciate your testaments about teaching community college classes.
I love it! Thank you for sharing this video. I am currently looking to teach at a Community College for all the above reasons. I was the student who though she wouldn’t make it and spent many years at a community college (not dropping out) thanks to some of my professors, eventually transferred and got my M.S. I hope to be that kind of professor for all students who I may get the honor to teach! Thank you!
If I complete a Masters program in business management. Can I teach at a community college????
Hey did you find the answer
@@Erick-uf6gi you can but not worth it
@Martin Pickett Then we're on the same boat. I'm looking for answers or Intel to that question
Yes, all you need is a master's degree
This is a great video. I want to teach at CC soon. I got out of the US Military at 24 and started at the local community college. They really set me on a good path.
I love it. Thank you Dr. Hoskins!!
Thank you, Dr. Hoskins, for this video. I found this helpful. My experience after growing up poor on a farm and the first among all generations of my family to get a college major, I observed cultural stretching and challenges. I can relate to farmers well, but I struggle to connect with "city slickers" who have no reference to connect with a "farm boy." Cultural acclimatization and some embarrassment will happen, and sap suckers will try to exploit that.
My CC students are my favorite. My four-years tend to be more entitled.
Excellent. Very helpful and informative.
Was a CC student…currently finishing undergrad and applying for masters programs. I hope to make an impact on underdog students some day. Professors connecting with students and helping them see their potential is a huge motivating factor for a student’s success.
I'm looking forward to teaching at our local Community College.
“I’m not a big proponent of egalitarianism or whatever.” That… doesn’t seem like a bad thing to be a proponent of whatsoever??
Thank you for sharing this information! I am 51 years old and enrolled on a Master's Program. I am looking forward to teaching at the community college level. I currently work in the public school system at a high school. I feel like I would love the basics and enjoy working with a diverse group of people.
Is it hard to land a teaching job at a community college given so many PhD graduates?]
Thank you for your video. I just finished my masters and I am considering teaching at a community college.
Dr. Hoskins, thank you for keeping us adjuncts grounded. Very inspiring. God bless you.
It’s so sad he has to warn people about teaching poor and colored people
People of color is the current phrase. Just trying to help you out :) But yes, it is a sad (but real) thing to have to consider when teaching community college.
If I get an MBA can I teach intro business classes?
Yes, you should
@@brucehoskins9789 sweet
Is it like the show community?
Great video! Very well said.
I used to go to Southwestern College down in Chula. Thanks for the great info
Thank you for your dedication to teaching community college students. I appreciate the discussion because we don't really have such name of a college here yet the closest is a technical/vocational school? Not sure.
This is a great inspirational message. Thanks for sharing your journey. We are inspired to put more energy into teaching community college.
This is gold. Thank you!
I loved this! What a thorough and interesting video! Thank you!
thanks dude - helpful and fun discussion
My answer is No!
My man, I'm a poor person. I work in the medical field and still cant pay the rent without feeling the need of another job ;-;
But high key, I want to be a high school teacher. Great video!
Great video!
You are certainly doing a great job as a community teacher ! You are doing something good for the society at large by dedicating yourself to educate the students who can't afford to enroll themselves in esteemed colleges to pursue their higher studies ! Thanks 😊
I wish my two professors could hear this they don’t like to teach they just read the slides and do not know how to give examples or analogy about a complex subject. They don’t want us to ask for help and if we have questions they only confuse us more .CSUSB do not have hight or even moderate standards to hire teachers they don’t train them one of my two professor don’t even know how to use canvas or give announcements assignments exams on time. I am glad I have 5 so so professor and 1 that he deserve the double of the salary. He knows organization with assignments, exams he ask us questions to engage and when we ask questions he answer clear straight forward and he provides with study guides he always on the top of his games he knows how to use canvas too.I want to say thank you for teach and love teaching Wish more professor could be like you but unfortunately some are there only for the check and don’t care 🤷♀️ About the students if they learning or not.
This was such a good video.
My dream job is to be a college professor at a university and community college I would love to teach Video Production, Editing, Photojournalism, and Film I am currently a junior expected to earn a Bachelor's in Multimedia Journalism I would like to work on a master's in media studies at UT Austin, so I could teach at UTEP and EPCC in the communication department. Hopefully my dreams and goal comes true, I sometimes wish they could give me the job as a professor.
Just enrolled in my first course for a community college teaching certificate! My journey began in a community college and now I plan on going back to teach there.Once I accomplish this I will reply to this thread. Wish me luck!
I'm in grad school, but started in CC. I would not be here if not for a great CC! I still keep in contact with Prof's from the CC, and have had a lot of good advice
I’d love to teach intro classes. I grew up poor so teaching to poor people would make me feel comfortable as opposed to rich kids. I went back to school as an adult so teaching adults would be fine too. I started adulthood as a welder in a steel plant while getting my degrees in History and Economics. I’m currently working on my masters in history. Can’t wait to teach at a CC.
Journey into poverty if you became an adjunct at the CC or any college/Univ. Those of you young ones think twice before you jump into teaching . If you manage to secure a fulltime , good, but anything less than that is a journey into a poverty trap.
Very good video and content. You make so many excellent, important points. I'm 27 years into a career as a full-time CC faculty member, and I still believe 100% in the mission and calling of the community college system. I love coming to work and helping all the students you describe. My only regret is that our student enrollment in Alabama community colleges is dropping so much (declining every year for the past 10 years). I don't know if that's the unfortunate situation in every state or not. ~~ Thanks for your work and your dedication.
Great video and so true. I've worked at 3 community colleges and you work with so many instructors that don't like to teach the basics.
Thank you, I really to teach now. I am 36 and going for MBA and in California.
You Got Me Thinking About Submitting My Vita...Hmmm
Hello Dr. Hoskins! Thank you so much for this video. I'm currently finishing up my undergrad in sociology. I've been caught in a crossroads of what to do and really questioning the point of everything i'm learning. At some points I really did regret jumping straight into a four year after high school. Before and now I know I wasn't truly ready but it ending up okay for me. It feels like a lot of the stuff i've been learning in my soc classes is outdated or out of touch. It aligns with the saying of academics in their ivory towers. However that's just my experience.
I really appreciate your explanation of the population found at community colleges. It emphasizes a sociological perspective and somewhat grounds all the ideas I hear thrown around in the classroom.
I've thought about becoming a teacher or professor at a community college but I may have to pass since teaching isnt my strong suit.
I really do appreciate this video and I know it's quite a random comment, but thank you so much!
StrangeFruitSociology i was wondering how much does a math professor get paid
This is as real as it gets in terms of the population community college professors need to know about before they get into this profession great video
Foundational Black American. I am NOT a person of color. I am a SPECIFIC type of black peroson... again, Foundational Black American. Anyway, thanks for the information.
What does that even mean?
Thank you for this!
But are their enough openings or are the teaching jobs hard to get?
RICKYS. ART Openings for full time teaching are becoming less and less common as CC’s move to hiring adjuncts for the majority of their teaching. If you want a full time position, you’ll need to be very competitive in the job market. If you want an adjunct position, they are a lot easier to get. Pay is not good and benefits are non existent for adjuncts.
@@polintr yeah I figured you had to be lucky to get a cc to let you teach full time. I was only interested in part time openings
RICKYS. ART In that case, there’s lots of openings for adjuncts. The hiring can be very informal and you never know if you’ll work from term to term. But the work is out there.
@@polintr the adjuncts open to people from other countries?
少家少 I think it’s possible. I don’t know the details. If you’re legally able to work and have the required education, you’re probably fine.
Am I qualified to apply for permanent residency in USA with a job as community college teacher? Thanks
That is too technical of a question for me, sorry :/
Wondering if I can be your mentee??
Stellar, man! Loved it!
Thanks so much for your thoughtful post here Dr. Hoskins. Much of what you offer here resonates for me as I am in graduate school for Social Work and am interested in teaching at the community college level. May I ask why you aren't a proponent of egalitarianism?
To clarify, I am not against what it really means. I am against how people use it to justify inequalities that could be fixed in our society. I hope that makes it a little bit clearer but hit me up at brucehoskins.com and contact me from there if you want to talk more :)
Very inspiring.
Very helpful !
Great video
is it possible for an indian living in India to apply for community college teacher? I have completed my Masters in Sociology
Guy you asked a similar question to mine. I am from China. I will be receiving my PhD degree in Singapore. My plan is to be a faculty in CC in the US. However, I am not sure if it is possible, as you are.
@@sanshixu4870 yes I hope we get a reply to our queries..
@@sanshixu4870 Most likely no, because they would want you to teach at least one face-to-face class. At least that is the case at my college. If you are asking what degree you need, then it is only a master's degree. So you would be qualified, but if you are not physically present in the US it would be hard to get a job here.
Do you have to earn your PHD in order to teach at a community college? Or would a Master’s be sufficient enough?
DoubleYou Masters is sufficient.
DoubleYou, first drop the extraneous “enough.” 😉
@@polintr, except I have held a Master’s for several years and never seem to qualify for anything. The only postings I ever see require 18 graduate level credits specifically in the discipline. My Master’s is in Public Policy which is a smattering of government, law, history and poli sci, but not 18 in any one of them.
is possible for a phd graduate from National University of Singapore, a top U in Asia, to be a full-time faculty of CC in the US ?
Most likely no, because they would want you to teach at least one face-to-face class. At least that is the case at my college.
@@brucehoskins9789 can u pls make more videos, im majoring in Business Econ in us 4 years uni. Which minor/ license and master degree should I follow to teach basic business/econ and math in 2 year college sir, tysm sir
Yeah, I remember my community college professor giving me a few C's for no reason.
Very true and great video., but we all have color. The people of color term is a little too exclusionary and segregating. It really means black.
This was outstanding. 🫂🫡♥️👏🏽
