Day 8 of the Everest base camp trek brings another change of plan. Today was supposed to see us hike from Dingboche at 4,400m elevation to Lobuche at 4,900m.
However, after going up to the Dingboche viewpoint the day before, I woke up feeling pretty crap. A headache and a dodgy stomach meant that we changed our plan and instead would simply go from Dingboche to Dughla at 4,600m. It's a short couple of hours to get to Dughla which sits under the faces of Tobuche and Cholatse.
It had its benefits though. After a quick lunch, we headed to the nearby Chola lake. It's a short 40 minute detour that most who go straight from Dingboche to Lobuche tend to ignore. Even the people staying at Dughla for the night didn't bother checking it out.
Not visiting Chola lake is a big mistake.
It's my favourite place on the whole of the EBC Trek. It's a frozen lake (at least it was frozen in December) at the foot of the daunting facets of two 6000m+ Himalayan Peaks.
There's nobody there. The wind makes the ice crack and groan, paired with intermittent rock falls. It really is an incredible place.
You also get amazing views of the valley, with Ama Dablam sitting at the far end. There's not much more to say about it, hopefully the video does it justice. I can't believe that it isn't a staple on every EBC Trek itinerary and Ghanesh (my guide) who had never visited it said that he would now be recommending that everyone visit the lake.
    0:00 - Change of plan
1:12 - Dingboche to Dughla hike
1:53 - Do tourists overload the sherpas?
3:44 - River crossing and entry to Dughla
5:46 - Heading to Chola lake
    8:10 - Chola lake

@Mary Abreu - that lake was genuinely one of the highlights of the last couple of years!

Am loving this EBC vid...simple..very informative & you did this trek at a time that most trekkers avoid. I am planning on starting my 22 day trek in mid Nov but may push it forward slightly in view of what you have presented. May I ask what yr exact trips dates were..???

@Domenic Clohessy - glad you like it. I believe I started the trek on 16th December, though be warned, straight after Christmas there was suddenly loads more people on the trail (makes sense because of holidays). Perhaps an early December start would work for you - I presume you are looking to do the High Passes?

@@WiththeSparrows Yes indeed. My plan is to trek via Phortse not the normal Tengboche route. Do Aba Dhablam base camp & continue to Chumkung Ri...proceed to EBC but the plan is when I reach Gorak shep is I will trek up Kala Phattar 1st so I can capture dusk on Everest. Base camp early the following morning. After that it's onto Gokyo via the Cholo pass. Spend a couple of days around the lakes before heading back to Namche. Of course I will do Gokyo Ri & & Renjlo pass. My initial start date was to leave Sydney on Nov 13th but will push that back 1 wk so I am returning home just before Xmas. It was yr vid & trek timing that has influenced this decision..Thank u..🙂
