- I wrote off playing Max Payne for so many years but finally got around to playing and beating it. I go over how it feels to appreciate this games' innovations for the first time in 2024. But there's one tiny problem... I played the PS2 version.

Which version of Max Payme did you play for your first playthrough?
PS2
The xbox version!! it was fanstastic. Also dont feel bad for being late to the party Pete, I didnt play Max Payne for the first time until 2016. Idk if you have any reverence for other Remedy games but Control and Alan Wake 2 are fantastic and Remedys imrpovement in game design and writing over the years is honestly so impressive. The jump from Alan Wake 1-2 is honestly crazy.
PC
Ps2 first then Xbox versions of part 1&2
I had a demo of the PC version first but the game I played and had was the PS2 version.
I played the Xbox version of Max Payne about a year ago using the physical disc on my Xbox one X. I can confirm it looked great for such an old game, and framerate was actually a lot smoother than I remember it being during my original playthrough.
Hard to believe Pete. That game is Gold.
The game was considered a graphics showcase for the pc at the time. It was part of 3dmark graphics benchmark before it was released. We were pretty aware of frame rate. I've played it on series x. It's not bad on there. All the max Payne's play better on pc with mouse and keyboard. You need the accuracy, especially on higher difficulties. I don't know how you'd play new York minute with a controller and bad framerate
I played Max Payne for the first time in 2019. I played the Xbox version via backwards compatibility on my Xbox 360. It has one of the best atmospheres of any game ever.
Should've played the pc version
It's very fun to hear you talk about this game with a completely different perspective. Played the PC version back in the day and never bothered with the console ports. I can't even imagine going through the last levels without saving constantly 😂 Thanks for sharing.
What what it's the first time you've played it that is surprising I'm glad it was well worth the wait it's a classic for a reason 😊
Played this not long after it got released on PC, I was spooked by the game at first, playing it as a child, but I got into the atmosphere so hard, My dad also played it a lot.
and I replayed so much that I know where every enemy is, same with Max Payne 2 and Max Payne 3.
Can't really say if I have a favorite Max Payne game, every game is has it's place in the era they came from, and they fit perfectly then and there, Max Payne 1 have this. almost. sentient feeling that you can smell and taste the air in each place, with the early 00s atmosphere by just looking at the environments.
My friend had this on PC back in the day when it first came out, it was pretty mind blowing at the time
Oh man! I remember my brothers and I playing this back when it came out.
This was one of the first games I ever played so cool to see u review it and give ur first impressions!
It was awesome. Played it when it first came out over at my neighbor's house on the Xbox. It was amazing
Love that thumbnail. Great video!!!
So happy to hear you enjoyed one of my favorites of all time, just last year I played through the 2nd for the first time and let me tell you as a die hard fan of the first game you have to play the 2nd !
Glad to see that you finally played Max Payne definitely one of my favorite games of that era..my first experience with Max Payne was the sequel on original Xbox Max Payne 2…I played my nephew’s Max Payne 2 game on Xbox and loved it and of course didn’t notice any frame rate issues..as a huge PS2 fanatic hearing about those frame rate issues is disappointing but understood considering it’s a pc port..so hope you’re going to play Max Payne 2 😅
Great to see more videos from you, would love to see you play “the getaway” 1or 2.
One of my all times favs out of the 1000s Ive played 💪😎
All the Max Paynes are amazing. Such a great series
Max Payne was the reason I bought a PS2 back in the day. Seen a demo on PC and was blown away. But my pc couldn't run it. Its possibly the game which got me back into console gaming!
Totally love the addition of gameplay in the background, been loving all the recent videos. Cheers Pete!
I played it when it came out on PS2. I loved it. I didn't own any other console. I did notice on my friends xbox that the fire details are better. I plan to replay 1 & 2 on my Series X
It plays like a dream on series X,the loading is not existent.
My first time playing Max Payne was on the Xbox back in the day, however I did buy the PS2 version later on PS4 so I'll eventually try it.
I played them both on PS2, if I recall was around 2002/03, half my life ago lol 😂 picked them up recently for my PS2 collection, the game was good back then but didn't wow me enough to rush to play it again.
Ive never tried max payne but looking forward to trying it now!
Ah yes, one of my favorite series!
PS2, did not notice fps when being the age I was at time
Oddly enough, I finished playing this game a couple of days ago for the first time since the PS2 era. I probably used a cheat disc to do it back then, though. You're right in that I didn't remember the framerate being so choppy and thought the PS2 backwards compatibility of the PS3 was just bad as that's how I played it. I also agree that it's pretty frustrating to start a level over because of the lack of save features. I mean, the Aesir tower at the end when shooting the lasers on the elevator after having jumped through a moving laser hallway and a few firefights was painful. Especially when you have to watch the in-game cutscenes again and again. Very good game, though.
I've very vague memories of this game, mainly just the opening TBF.
I've seen you've been playing DQ8 though, I'd love a video like this on that game!
Yeah, I remember playing Diablo 2 on 15 frames, and that was constant, it didn't bothered me.
Pete do a first playthrough of Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams or the first one Tak and the Power of Juju on GameCube or PS2 if you love awesome but quirky 3D platformers check them out! I always recommend them! I hope one day soon you’ll give them a shot! Check out the whole trilogy! (Tak and the Power of Juju, Tak 2 the Staff of Dreams and Tak the Great Juju Challenge) :)
I played the PS2 version. Loved it. Didn't notice the hiccups you did but it was a different time them.
Great video
If I remember correctly we had the Xbox version. My brother and I played the hell out of this game
great game, scarred me slightly as a 10 y.o. Junkies spazzing out in toilet stalls was def. a first in games for me at the time.
I remember not knowing they were on drugs and was so confused as a kid. Definitely freaked me out lol
The movie with Mark Wahlberg was pretty decent too, you should check that out
Put Remedy titles on your list of must plays. I love Max Payne! I'm going to go thru Alan Wake then Control!
I loved Alan Wake but still need to play Control
I played through both "Max Payne" games on my early fat PS2 at launch & never encountered any issues. I didn't play PC games & I didn't buy the first Xbox until the 360 came out, so I didn't realize I was playing anything bad as that's all I knew.
Max Payne 3 has the best 3rd person shooting mechanics in any game ever made.
I dont remember! I just remember really enjoying the game and thinking the dark storyline was really cool. I think I was 14 when I played this first?
Ps2 and the non quick save pissed me off lol but hey I’m not the only one that felt that way
Brutal game on ps2
definitely recommend checking out Max Payne 3 someday, the gameplay in it is top notch
Max Payne, and Scarface, gems of a time when DEI wasn't turning games into piles of 💩.
I replayed this one on the PS5 recently. Runs pretty well.
I don’t think I could play that game without getting a headache 😅
How could a man like you not have played this classic.
Because he's a Playstation RPG nerd. That's literally his explanation, and it makes sense because it's the same reason why I didn't play it until about 15 years after release. I'm glad I did, though, because it's great.
I played this recently too and I thought it was okay. Started getting frustrated with the aiming on controller, it’s so blocky? Idk how to describe it. I like some good clunk sometimes but not when aiming lol. Forced myself to finish the game and I’ll probably never play it again but I liked the story/setting. Pretty cool game. The difficulty was nice, but probably only a challenge because it was hard for me to aim
Play Max Payne 2 for sure, on what ever. But Max Payne 3 on PS3 is a top 10 game. They finally got it right with that one. Story is still great.
The dream levels still haunt me. Check out the GBA version of Max Payne if you haven’t Pete, it’s an interesting version.
I only played the third one for ps3 and had decent fun with it.
This is one of those games where you really sell yourself short by not playing the PC version
The original Xbox version is a fun game. A lot more fun with God mode on.
I don't ordinarily watch Twitch but I did catch a bit of your Max Payne stream. The only Max Payne I've played is the 3rd, I think it was gamepass or something because I know I didn't pay for it. I notice Max Payne is available on PS4, wonder if that helps the frame rate any?
Ive always meant to get around to this series, but never have.
This game has aged very well for me! I think the PS2-era graphics really add to the liminality of the dreary night atmosphere as well.
Plus let's be real. The graphics lagging? Yeah sure it's 20yrs old. But EVERYTHING ELSE is amazing still 😂❤ and I love that. Just shows how good material can be when made correctly. This is one of those examples. plus the more I look at like the ps2 and then the xbox series x or ps4, I'm like. Yea we have big games but just becauss ps2 didn't have HUGE games in size doesn't mean they didn't have big games or they didn't make up for that in some way when it didn't have to. It was purely for the drive of gaming the game good, not big for big's sake. Plus a lot of ps2 graphics arnt THAT bad and if they got FUN and good story? Heck cut down them graphics no problem lol. Gimme goodness in any form, so long as it's good
Played all 3. 1-2 on Xbox . Third on ps3 very bad glitch there some how I beat. now want to try ps2 I have it because I like it this game . Very cool to play Max payne on stormy rainy night day😂
You should try Dead To Rights.
Yeah I still need to get around to that series
@@PeteDorr It's a more arcade like Max Payne.
Wait till oyu play max payne 3, imo the best 3rd person shooter of all time
This is the only one i havent played, maybe ill pick it up on Xbox...
Would hate to see how the Dreamcast version would have ran.
Max Payne is a masterpiece, and you should play PC version.
Ps2 ver sucks compared to the xbox one
For sure, if I play again it will be on a Series X
Did you like It?
PS2 does not have enough Vram for maxpayne. Recommend stranglehold the direct sequel to the movie hard boiled in pc with fov and resolution fix mod else Xbox 360.
You prefer Max Payne or Silent Hill 2 ?
Basically just John Woo Stranglehold but worse?
You should give max payne 2 a shot the gameplay in mp2 is way more refined maybe because of the slightly bigger budget it had at the time. The Atmosphere is alot darker in mp2 so if you enjoyed the first game you should definitely try the second game skip the ps2 version for mp2 though Its awful.
It's nice you finally got around to play this game, although you've put yourself through the worst version of it. MP2 is even better in my opinion, be sure to give it a spin too sometime. To this day there's no game I've beaten more times than MP2. Just do yourself a favor and don't play the PS2 version again, I've played all versions and it's way better on PC and Xbox.
Sucks that your first experience is the console version lol
ok but now go play Max Payne 3. You will be blown away
I grew up with the ps2 version. But I recently got the Xbox version and it’s waaaay better. PS2 isn’t the way to play it and I wish I grew up with the Xbox version lol. I say play max Payne 2 on Xbox lol
