It's remarkable how well the gun mechanics hold up over 17 years later
This game has a sentimental value to me. I've finished it like 20+ times, eons ago on PC. I had all the comics remembered by heart. Of course I've played "better" games since then but none of them had such impact on me. To me Max Payne will always be the best game ever.
If you shoot the speaker in the elevator, max says "thank you".

Yeah...it doesn't make any sense why we don't have this. Also max Payne 3 needs to be ported to current consoles.

I remember back in high school a friend of mine gifted me an Xbox copy of Max Payne. I still have it but I never played it at all mainly because I wanted to replace my old and broken down Xbox, Several years later and I still haven't gotten around to it. I should probably just buy the PC version on sale at somepoint. Great review by the way. Less than 10 days to go for the new Uncharted game! :D

great review, still have this game on ps2, also i remember as a kid i would be so scared of playing max payne 2's nightmare level's, i would get my mum to sit in my room while she's reading the newspaper or whatever while i play that level lmao

I just bought it on my ps5 for old times sake and got to say there's a lot of changes to it, idk if its been remastered coming from a guy who binged played this game
Had you played the game when it first came out? I have great memories of this game, however, the price on the playstation store puts me off. That and I'm not sure if it's aged well from the looks of your review.

No, it was not intended to be taken seriously. The comedy is absolutely intentional.

Damn I didn’t know this game was on PS4. I spent 10 for a PS2 copy but I could’ve been playing it in HD and trophy support 😢
It wont let me load my save file on the ps4 its there but I click on it and notning happens
Just played through mp1 on ps5 and was great! Have to agree about the platforming, sooooo bad! Analog stick deadzone needs working on as it was so hard just to walk up stairs, let alone do the dream sequences. Also the save points on ps really sucked compared to pc and Xbox. Really looking forward to the remakes though!
I would get the sin city movie production team let the team responsible for mafia do the mechanics then hand it off to remedy gaming
The ps2 version this is emulated from really sucked..the story board parts weren't meant to be shown all at once.. There was no save whenever you want which became a pain in the nightmare part and theres loads of slowdown. Its a rubbish port.
And what of the ps4 port?
Games like this they shouldn't call playstation 4 they should not even remake them like this deserve a definitive edition

Lol Max Payne and manhunt are like punisher games. Just rename the main character frank castle in both. Max Payne can be the origin manhunt the sequel through in punisher ps2 or pc the game ending the trilogy.
They could have remastered it fully

I played this on my Gameboy Advance, I loved it!
I do not really agree on the point that the game takes it self very serious. Max's lines are so over the top, everything consists of cliches, stereotypes and vibrating beds. Yes its dark and Max suffers a lot because of the tragic event but i doubt that it was the writers intention to create a top serious story.
I bought this on ps4. I'm not at all put off by the graphics but I am very disheartened by a broken mechanic that I assume is a result of bad porting. Has anyone else experienced their character (Max) walking right when holding forward?
It's rendered the game unplayable for me and I would be grateful for any advice.
Unfortunately, Sony (as anti-consumer as always) have denied me a refund and will not pass comment on how I might resolve the issue.
Have you tried uninstalling the game, then reinstalling?
The PS4 version is still just the PS2 version. It's awful.
FACTS I deleted it on the ps3 and play the xbox version instead. Quick savesand quick loads are essential in this game for the amount of times you die....
In my experience, the ps4 has been worse than the ps2 version because, whilst the same game, at least as a ps2 game it has been optimised for that console.
Nothing has been done to adapt the ps2 version for the new console and, as a result, it plays significantly worse.
I've unfortunately encountered a bug wherein Max runs to the right when you hold forward which has rendered it unplayable.
If you ever consider playing Max Payne, get the Xbox version or get it on Steam. Those versions are far more superior than the butchered PS2 port. The PS2 version suffers low frame rates, low resolution, limited character models blurred face animations and 30 second loading screens (the Xbox version usually takes 22 seconds to load).
Xbox 360 has all 3 games so that's the best option as far as consoles go
I've encountered a problem on the ps4 version wherein Max runs to the right when you hold forward. It's game breaking. Of course, I've downloaded the game so Sony won't refund me. BUT HOW WAS I TO KNOW THERE WAS A GLITCH AND THAT I'D NEED A REFUND WITHOUT DOWNLOADING THE GAME?
Honestly, it's as though Sony has purposefully devised their refund policy to trap gamers into voiding their right to a refund.
Buy it on steam. It's better. And you can get a refund after testing the game if necessary.
Not a single word about how it looks on ps4. WTF are you telling us what this game is about? We all have played it before.
+Андрей Батурин I often don't talk much about how a game looks, simply because you can see for yourself in the video. However, fair point- that's something I'll try and include more talk about graphics in future reviews.
The game run's terrible for me on a PS4, especially in large and crowded areas, you can notice drastic performance drops. I bought it just recently. It has to be some kind of a an emulator for the PS2 games which is running on top. There is also a delay each time the game launches into comics sequences to tell the story. Screen becomes black for a few seconds and the it resumes. Same goes for in game menus - also few seconds until you get there. Oh and did I mention that the games completely froze in the firs metro chapter ! Another thing is that you are not able to save the game whenever you want, there is an auto save system which saves the game but usually doesn't give any notice about it, so it may append that you are close to completing a level or just making a jump which ends up being fatal and tada you have to start all over again. Not very thoughtful. I bought the game because of nostalgia and mainly due to the trophies that it offers but I would strongly advise against it. If you played the pc version the levels are usually split into two, making it impossible to return to the previous location. The maps were also specially dresigned for playstation and some secret locations or Easter eggs as you known them from pc version are completely left out or replaced with a texture that is masking the entrance.

I was considering downloading this game on PS4 for a nostalgia feeling as well, but based on what you said, I don’t think I will. I first played this game on the original Xbox. I never played the PS2 version.
@@Snowbird_89 No ps4 acquisition has left me feeling as ripped off as Max Payne 1. It's a port of the ps2 version, which sounds fine until you take into consideration that the ps2 version would need some tweaking to run on the ps4 if it is to perform as it did on its native console. And it got no such tweaking.
Ergo, despite being the same version. The ps2 version is far worse on ps4 than on the ps2.
