When I came back to church in my early 30s I bought myself a NIV bible even though my church was an only KJV crowd. I fell in love with the NIV version and read the whole Bible in less than a year. Because of it's easy to read and easy to understand reading I felt the Holy Spirit work through the words and have been brought to tears and into a state of humbleness of just how merciful and righteous and mighty our God is. If the NIV can work through a member of a Conservative independent Baptist member, it is the word of God. The only difference is that I and my young children can understand better when we read the Bible together. Thank you Pastor Mike for this amazing educational sermon...so many people need to hear this and stop bashing other Christians on their bible preference. The bad translations is often clearly seen by true Christians anyway.
@@lelendkendrickmd4393 christian that think like you are the reason why so many turn from faith. English language is not the only language the Bible is printed in. In fact many verses in my native language are far more accurate, in depth and have a better understanding than the words English has to offer. There are words in other languages that takes a whole English paragraph to grasp the concept. I'm not for translations influenced by the world, but I am for a person being able to understand God is trying to say. In the end all versions except for the very first language given to the apostles and other writers of the old testament are not going to be the exact words but the concept remains the same. @@midnitglory no people turn from the faith because they're taught God's word is not perfect, only the original manuscripts were perfect, and those don't exist anymore. People run from the faith because they decide, "If God can't keep His word perfect, than I can't trust Him". People leave the faith because they compare bible versions and they quickly realize they all teach very different things, which is lying, and which is telling the truth. A perfect example is the very first verse in the bible. A perverted version will make "heaven" plural, thus changing everything and making a liar out of God. "Heaven" teaches there's one universe, while "heavens" teaches there are multiple universes. Which one is the lie, and which is the truth? I've seen countless people reject the faith because of the lies taught by people like Winger and others, but I've seen very few people leave the faith because of Textus Receptus only teachings. Btw, study the manuscript history, you'll see that all new versions use perverted manuscripts. People can get saved off of perverted bibles, but they cannot spiritually grow.
I always stick to ESV, NKJV, or KJV. The ESV is easy to understand with today's English and is a more literal translation than others, the KJV and NKJV I read also simply because my grandfather was a KJV only type of man and he was the man in my life that brought me to Christ, not by preaching or forcing me to church but leading by example. He was more of a man than I will ever be. Read his Bible and prayed daily no matter what the rest of the family was doing, always said grace and thanked the Lord for a meal. God bless you Grandpa I miss you, can't wait to see you again when I can be reunited with you and the Lord in heaven.
I can't stand the KJV. A couple very accurate translations but the rest are awful. The HalleluYah Scriptures are the best at using the original names of people, God & Yeshua & everything else. It isn't an easier read but it makes more sense now.
I just started reading some ESV and I love it. I’ve mainly only read KJV, Just because the churches I’ve been to usually stick to it, not to say that they’re only KJV (although about three people I know are) just that the KJV is there go to. And I completely agree with your statement.
@@Gen-ZChristian Ive bounced back and forth between KJV and NASB1995 but then it was pointed out to me that some verses from KJV were missing from the NASB and that threw me off. I like in the bible app though, I can go to a verse and switch between different versions to see what they all say
@@addictedtojesus922 Haha yeah I've found myself looking at the wording of a bible and felt sure it was worded differently a few years earlier in the same version. So I always have my trusty hard copies of my favourite bibles in my backpack. I've come to this video for help in selecting 2 or 3 that I feel I can trust (after disastrously trying to read The Message fabrication). I've made my choices and will be obtaining hard copies over the next couple weeks and will be replacing my old NKJV in the backpack.

The NLT is what brought me to Christ. It enabled me to see the larger biblical concepts with much more clarity and understanding. I found I could read it like a book, and it opened my eyes.

Upon more closer scrutiny I discovered that only a handful are genuine. No one is perfect all will make ERRORS that is one thing. I find it impossible to believe that Winger supports bibles like the NIV through some innocent mistake, particularly when he does seem to know things well. So that means he preaches according to various trabslations? That is unacceptable. I listened for years to very knowledgeable preachers like Walter Vieth, Mike Hoggard and even Kent Hovind who all have no excuse for preaching the fallacies they preach considering they preach a large majority of valid material. Satanists are everywhere and seek to deceive the flocks. Some like Joel Osteen, are obvious liars while others like John MacArthur rely on more subtle means to deceive. Sorry I don't trust well versed biblical teachers that support massive lies like the NIV. It wasn't till I stopped listening to a lot of these men that I trusted for years did I finally begin to understand many key biblical teachings esp Revelation. The KJV stands with the original texts. Many other translations have removed verses which is a big no no. A perfect example is the ESV. It has omitted 16 verses of the Bible. That should be very concerning. I'd recommend the Thomas Nelson reference edition. It is red letter with updated meaning references in the center bar of the page and capitalizes prophetic sayings in the NT and on and on. It really sticks to the original translation as best as the English language can and includes all verses from the original texts. I'm concerned that people point at King James only'ists as though that's an issue but they don't have any concern (or clue maybe) of the omitted verses and also changed verses.
When I was first born again I fell into the King James only camp. I was given a book from my pastor which put forward the case for other translations. I do read others and have a NLT and an NIV at home which helps me to understand and appreciate the word but I have to say, when I feel the need to read psalm 119 (which I read more often than any other psalm) I always read it from the King James. Something about that translation of the psalm gets across the feelings and awe and in parts, the desperation of David as he begs God almighty to guide him and protect him etc and I gain confidence to come to God in my hour of need as David did.
If one does a comparative version analysis of pre-kjv with kjv of psalm 119, one can see that the translators were taking pieces from other translations and having that be the kjv. (i.e. - verse 1 same as douay, first part of verse 2 same as the bishops bible, while the second half of verse 2 is nearly identical to douay with only "and" put in as the difference, verse 3 a revisement of Geneva, and verse 4 nearly identical to Geneva with the exception of "us", verse 5 same as Geneva, verse 6 a revisement of the Bishops bible for the first half, with the second part of verse 6 back to Geneva... shall I go on?) "Truly (good Christian reader) we never thought from the beginning that we should need to make a new translation, nor yet to make of a bad one a good one, but to make a good one better, or out of many good ones one principal good one..."* *an excerpt from the translators to the reader left by the translators of the kjv in early kjvs.
kjv Geneva, the Bishops bible all great Bibles unlike the RC Jesuit version douay. Those so called missing(important parts) are in the letters of the Church Fathers, older thus proof of which was tampered with. Paul warned of gnostic influence in the Church in his day.

Great video Mike! In fact, this is about the third time I've watched. A few years ago, I started buying Bibles from all of the main translations. I accepted Christ reading the NIV84, and as a result, my wife and four children also read it, albeit the NIV2011. I agree with paraphrase Bibles also, especially The Living Bible. But I will say this, I believe my father, before passing in 1995, accepted Christ by reading The Living Bible. I still have that Bible he read, and his notes in it lead me to believe he accepted Christ, and I am so grateful for that.=)
"Having it in the belly" is an interesting phrase. Makes me think of the phrase "had a bun in the oven". I will look out for a translation in the future saying "Mary was found to have a bun in the oven.".

When you listen to the arguments they sound right and make me question if I should get rid of my other versions I have. ...until someone else comes against the kj only arguments and now I think I should read some of the others too. @@sarahs7751 I go to a KJV only church, but I am not KJV at all. I have KJV bibles I take to church but I am an ESV/NASB reader. There is nothing wrong with modern translations. The KJV onlyist are usually very rude and hateful commenters. The whole concept is borderline cultic.

I am fussy, used NKJV since it came out, could never find anything else I felt hit the spot. I teach from it, and appreciate as you said, the nuances. I want something authoritative, (I do NOT mean authorized by King James! who cares!) So this was VERY WELL DONE MIKE WINGER. The king James English was generally the language of the people of that time. As a first ever Christian in my family, I got converted at 20 years old and used the king James for over 40 years. I now use the NLT for my devotional time but I use the NKJV for memorising and to enjoy the beauty of the language and prose and poetry etc. I never doubted the deity of The Lord Jesus Christ at any time in the 40 years I used the King James. My mother who came to Jesus when she was 72. She was almost illiterate and yet read the KJV for the rest of her life and loved it and she grew in her faith. Remember we don’t generally change old classics, Ustinov, Pliny, Jane Austin, Wordsworth, Dickins, well I could go on…..you get the picture. Those who have tried to update say Jane Austin have totally ruined it, same with Shakespeare. So the KJV has been understood by many generations, even many working class people, which is my background, and they grew in their love, knowledge and obedience to Christ and their understanding of living to please God. Of course, the most early version of KJV is too difficult for many but hey….the message translation is so lacking of any impact upon my heart or mind but if it helps others..go for it. But for me and I am a Pentecostal I say LONG LIVE THE KJV/NKJV.

The problem I have had over the years has been where Christian Ministers would say something about the Bible and various translations in a very negative way and the results has been that it has created a lot of doubts about the Bible so much so that it has taken my faith away from Christ Himself! If I can not have faith in the Bible How can I have faith in anything it says. Mike, Your videos make me reeeeeeaaaally miss my pastor from the church I originally attended when I was saved in the early 90s. Like you, his messages & teachings were highly informative, researched, clear, compelling, non-emotionally driven, scholarly-MEATY! That was when I lived in Southern California, but I had to move to Ohio because CA was just too expensive. Just moved to South Carolina, and will be trying to find a church. I often battle between the ESV, NASB 95, and the CSB. Those are like the best translations on the market in my opinion 😂 it’s honestly hard. Esv is great for its combination of poetic literality. It does everything the KJV does well in a modern Bible translation! It’s hard to beat. CSB is the absolute perfect balance between literal translation and dynamic translation. It’s like the ESV and the NIV had a baby. It’s honestly one of the single most beautiful translations I’ve ever read. NASB 95: is amazing for its goal of literality! It is beyond literal to a fault and it actually is cool to me. It’s changed how I see and understand scriptures due to this fact. *sigh* perhaps I’ll just have to continue being that one guy who always lugs multiple bibles around

I am in the KJV only camp, and the ministry I am under prefers that version due to what you described, the beauty and essence of god's word. We have to look up definitions of some words at times, but that requires effort and it is always effort well spent in my opinion. Jesus obviously did not speak in old english, but as an English only speaker, having to put in effort to understand certain passages by re-reading them over and over at times really pulls me in to a place where I am actively trying to receive the message, and that is a beautiful thing.

I find this very helpful. I am a Christian 57 years now, since 1966. I love greatly the King James Bible, years later when ESV came along I use that a lot also. I read through the 1st one mentioned here many times, and used it "forever" in regular study and general reading...and since the ESV came out I have read through and use this as much as my favorite King James. I have the NASB and the Holman Bibles too and love them. The Holman has their references at the end of the Bible verses , VERY helpful for different reasons, a big one being more easy on my 79 year old eyes. I’m a KJV kind of person but I’m not opposed to learning about it’s faults. I’m of the belief we must always question and research without preconceived notions. Thank you for this teaching.
I truly appreciate this. Thank you for providing the Body of Christ with this information. The only thing I would suggest is when you're speaking about the NASB be sure to mention its ancestor, the 1901 ASV and then the 1977 NASB of which the '95 NASB is the update. Next the RSV also had a '71 update. Lastly, the NIV was first completed in '78 and then slightly revised in '84.
The AMP is mostly the NKJV with annotations. It’s mostly verse for verse the New King James with annotations to the text. If you’re looking, try the Good News Bible.

@@judyswiderski2682 I appreciate your reply. What does the version you're studying say in Deut:32:8-9? Sons of Israel or Sons of God? I've been reading the Amplified & NKJV side by side and I've found they're mostly similar but I confess I haven't gotten as far as a comparison in Proverbs 7; ditto for John. Hence the recommendation to use the Good News Bible or the ESV. However, given the tools available to me now, the Amplified has been great when it comes to understanding the context of the Bible's writers; seeing as I'm geeking out over the Old Testament. I'm pretty certain that if we applied the same criteria for verse to verse equivalency across most versions of the Bible, we'd arrive at the conclusion that most were wrong, even evil if they didn't apply across the board. There's always a hint of the translator's world view. Thankfully, we have the tools to compare across versions and pray for guidance so we're certain. Does it make sense in the context of the writers' Ancient Near Eastern worldview and salvation theme of the Bible?

@lucinov Using ONLY the NIV and the NASB, please post the Father's and Son's Names which is eternal life (John 17:3). Will let you know that the Son never walked this earth as Jesus. There isn't a letter "J" or sound in Hebrew. We have a Jewish Savior . . . who doesn't have an English name. Thus, there's only one Name for Salvation (Acts 4:12).

Elohim is the proper title for God and is plural: it represents the Father, Son, and Ruach (Spirit) are ONE. The Son was never named Joseph. We both no that . . . so at best that's a serious mistake. Acts 4:12 makes it crystal clear that He has only One Name. Consequently, the Son spoke His Hebrew Name to Shaul (he was never called Paul) from Heaven and this is emphasized 3 times in Acts for a reason (read Acts 9:15). Consequently, the Name Shaul spoke to Greeks and Jews was YAHSHUA. That Name was used to fulfill Matthew 28:19, which is another verse seriously misinterpreted by men. That verse is erroneously recited by MOST churches when baptizing people when it doesn't contain the Name. If you want to follow the traditions of men and the numerous flaws in their teachings then go ahead. However, if you truly want to seek the Truth, your Heavenly Father will reveal it to you.
@@Michael0841Friend, why nitpick on someone because they use two Bible translations you personally dislike? I’m pretty sure we could find fault with some passages in any translation. They are translating from different languages over hundreds of years. If you’re KJV only, I think you’re missing out but I’m not going to attack a brother because of his (or her) choice of translation. I first read the NIV, NLT, and now compare between NASB, ESV, NKJV, KJV, NIV, and even the Catholic I grew up with (but never read) to see the variations. Sometimes I’ll look at 8 different versions of a sentence to see how each translates it. If we force someone or try to shame them into reading what we think is best, we come across as judgmental about things we shouldn’t be. It’s not sin or salvation at risk. Let’s love each other and build each other up in Christ. That’s what I believe Jesus would do. And I’m paraphrasing, but Paul said he became different things to different people when witnessing. Some of us come to Christ through shows on TV that lead us to scripture. If a new believer approaches and we are not willing to help them learn wherever they are, how are we a light? Isn’t that more important than the Bible translation someone picks? Especially since most who grow in Christ advance to more meaty versions. We have to call out sin. But we don’t have to call out our every preference as perfect. I am not trying to be offensive, rather to remind myself and others that not everything is a fight. God bless!

@@AdamSmith-ec5nv No, they are not. The CSB is technically an "update" to the HCSB, but the translation methodology and changes that were made are significant. Any relationship between the two is purely historic.

Mike, thank you for the video. I wanted to ask you to comment on this very important point: the early church fathers do include the famous Mark 16:9-20, JN 7:53-8:11, 1Jn 5:7. This demonstrates that that the early church did use those passages as Scripture. Thus, IMO, Textus Receptus manuscripts in the KJV and my Russian Synodal version and other versions based on Textus Receptus didn't actually add these verses, but rightly included them as the oldest tradition in the church. The Westcott & Hort text came in later than the early church fathers and didn't include those passages mentioned above. The early church fathers predate the Westcott & Hort Alexandrian and Vatican manuscripts. I have gotten this point from this brother. I like that he doesn't state that the KJV is the inspired Word of God, but the Greek manuscripts are the God-breathed Word of God. For me this whole version issue revolves around how one answers this simple question: Do you believe God has preserved His inspired word for us today in English? Simple yes or no. If your answer is "no" then your free to use whichever version floats your boat. You can apply your own human preference and go for it. However if you answer the above question "yes", your task is a bit different. All you have to do is search through the various versions for mistakes. God does not make mistakes. Think on this: inspiration without preservation is a Devine waste of time. Let me add: The Word of God is Jesus Christ (capital w) while the word of God is ink on paper. Why do some feel God has preserved the Word, but not capable of preserving the word?

The NASB... 1) NASB includes some majority text alternatives in brackets within the text, whereas the ESV will have it as a footnote or not at all. 2) NASB italicizes words that were added to the text, not found in the manuscripts, like what the NKJV does. 3) NASB capitalizes pronouns referring to God, whereas the ESV does not. Those are a few of the reasons I switched from the ESV after several years of using it as my main translation to the NASB as my main. Plus the NASB footnotes are better. I still live the ESV, don't mean to knock it, but I think its too similar to the NASB but just falls short in too many ways to keep me preferring it over the NASB. I also enjoy using the NKJV a lot, I probably use the NASB and NKJV split 50/50 these days.
Good to know I have always liked the ESV. I haven't read from the NASB but I like how the ESV uses footnotes to explain verses that are commonly used out of context.
Yes agree, I like the NASB 1995, it’s readable and I like that they include the debated verses unlike other modern translations. Missing verses from the New Testament in modern bibles bugs me as I grew up with KJV.

And boy, did you deliver with this video! 😆👍✝️ I've used mostly the NKJV for the past 30 years, but considering what I've learned from Mike here, I'm going to order a copy of the CSB note taking Bible and the ESV study Bible for reference. Keep in mind that Dr. White never mentions that the copyright laws that require the book have 15% change in meaning to get a copyright (and therefore make money) and that Dr. White works for the company that owns the rights to the NASB

Mike, If I may, I'd like to respond point-by-point to clarify some things you say in this talk. If this seems critical, please don't take it personally but as a response to your sources rather than to you. 3:49 -- The KJV NT was not based on just six Greek manuscripts. That's how many Erasmus had available to him in Basel when he compiled the first edition of the Textus Receptus. Bur research on the New Testament text did not start in Basel; nor did it end there. Erasmus had studied other manuscripts, and he was informed about readings in some manuscripts he had not personally seen (by Lorenzo Valla's notes, for example). Erasmus continued to tweak his compilation in later editions and the more time passed, the more manuscripts' readings he gained access to. He even had a list of 365 readings from Vaticanus. Plus, in the 1500's, scholars such as Stephanus used additional manuscripts, citing manuscripts such as Codex Bezae and Codex Claromontanus, amd minuscule 69 and minuscule 6, and others. In addition, the scholars of the 1500's made abundant use of patristic citations, which in some cases are so extensive (such as in Augustine's writings) that it is almost like having the writer's exemplar in hand. The KJV's translators had access to all that previous work -- the Complutensian Polyglot, Erasmus' compilations, Stephanus' annotated editions, Beza's editions, versional research, and more.
I really appreciated this video. I use the KJV for general use (reading and study) but I also apreciate several other versions as references. The Scriptures 2009, ESV, NIV, NMV, even the Orthodox Jewish Bible has been helpful at times. Overall I watch out for anything that completely changes or seems to distort the overall messages of the Gospel, God's Word and claim to be "one of a kind" like the TPT and NWT for example.

I love checking out the different translations…I often sit in my recliner, late at night with 4 Bibles opened to the same scriptures…just love that !!!! HOWEVER, at age 72, and being "in church" most of my life, I discovered on more than one occasion some of the rudest, narcissistic people in our congregation were those Bible nerds who took great pride in knowing scripture, showing off their extensive library of "spiritual " material…. My point ? I love having 12 Bibles but if I don’t lead my life in such a way that is pleasing to my creator…..all is for naught. Have a great day/night everyone !!

Thank you for this video Pastor Mike! I’ve been a Christian my whole life (22 years old), was raised in a non denominational church and grew up reading the NIV. I never really thought twice about translations and wasn’t very informed on all the different ones Ava I Le. I’ve recently become very interested in translations as I’ve grown so much in my faith and my reverence for God’s word. I got a “She Reads Truth” CSB Bible as a gift and really enjoy it so far. For 6 years, my wife and I have been leading an entire read-through of the (Protestant) Bible, starting at the beginning and going cover-to-cover. The joke has always been that might not get to Revelation before it happened. (We were just about to start Revelation when COVID hit, and we haven't met in a year.) Anyway, I encouraged people to bring different translations so we could compare them as we read. It has been very informative, mainly in that we're still getting the same meaning time and again.
I love this video! And I have recommended it many times. This is my third or fourth time listening through! This year I am trying to read through the NT in a ton of different translations. Thank you Mike for all you do!

Mike, i love the KJV, i find every good doctrine there, i feel God's presence while reading it and i really believe God has preserved his word and this translation is good enough for me, I sometimes use the ESV too but i believe all good and sound christianity doctrine can be found on the KJV.

I would consider Acts 2 in the Holy Bible which states that different languages received the word of God. Don't go so much on what man says but rather what the word of God says.
10:55 - Regarding the claim that there is not the equivalent of thee and though in Greek: While Greek does not have special pronouns for formal addresses, the terms "thee" and "thou" and "thine" are in the KJV (and in other early English versions, and in the 1881 Revised Version) to differentiate from plural pronouns ("ye" and "you" and yours"). In this sense, there is a level of precision in the Greek text that is conveyed by the use of these English pronouns. The singular/plural distinction is unfortunately lost in modern English, except in dialects which employ "y'all," y'uns," etc.
Also, the use of thee and thour in the KJV, those pronouns were used when speaking to family and friends, while a singular you is formal, for those who are not close to us or to indicate a distinction of class or social rank. I don't use the KJV, but I do wish people knew that the pronouns are used to show God's love for us, not formality.
In Exodus 20 the giving of the Ten Commandments. Moses uses singular second person pronouns. You and your are all singular second person pronouns. The y’s are not plural .
The Textus Receptus was not from kjb it was before the kjv by Erasmus, Theodore Beza, and Estefanus. I think you're trying to mislead people by saying it's the other way around, that's very deceptive.
It was the NIV that finally turned the light on for me (after YEARS of reading the bible). When I read the book of Romans in the NIV and Paul is talking about "the flesh", the NIV uses the expression "sinful nature". For some reason, that simple phrase made me finally understand the book of Romans and Paul's gospel. (And it is uniquely Paul's gospel that he is teaching in Romans and Galatians. None of the other churches at the time were hearing this message. In fact, Paul comes right out and labels it, "My Gospel" at the end of Romans. Rom. 16:25a - Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, Paul's gospel.)

The NIV 1984 can still be found. In my opinion it is much better than 2011. I have bought many copies so that it will available to my children's children!! I read the Bible every year and swap up the translations and find blessings in them all (never read The Message, NWT, NIRV or ISV and years since I read The Living Bible). I have also read The Jewish Bible and recommend it. Thanks for a great review.
When you were talking about translators it made me laugh because i had a similar experience in Ecuador on a missions trip. Our pastor was preaching and the missionary was translating. He said "spring in your step" and the missionary stopped for a second and was trying to explain that idiom in Spanish. The crowd was laughing at the situation and the pastor was so confused! 😂

In my former job, I had to translate legal documents from Spanish into English. I had to do a literal translation-word for word-of the document. It was very difficult whenever I came across particular Spanish words that had no English equivalents. I then thought of which other words could I use that were similar in meaning, or synonyms. Even though I am very fluent in Spanish, English is my dominant language, and so I had to make sure to have the finished English translation read as fluidly as it did in the Spanish. Now, think about modern-day translators having to translate the Greek used from almost 2000 years ago, and you can begin to appreciate their finished work when you can read and understand it, and best of all, capture nuances that are in the original language now translated into English.
I love the RSV. It is very close to the KJV (which I also love), but it doesn’t sound so stridently archaic in some spots. I can say “walk” instead of “walketh.” Also, I tend to shun the forcing of a messianic reading of the Bible unless the Hebrew is unambiguous.
The KJV has some dynamic equivalency in it too, sometimes in places where more word-for-word modern versions such as NASB do not. On the other hand, in many cases it's more word-for-word, obscure, and ambiguous than most modern translations. It is this way with all translations--NKJV, NASB, ESV, NET, NIV, NLT, you name it: they often differ in a given passage or phrase on how word-for-word or thought-for-thought they translate it. Also, you simply cannot characterize one as more accurate than another; it's more complicated than that, and accuracy is a matter of subjectivity and opinion. That's why comparing translations one of the most useful things you can do in Bible study, especially if you make use of footnotes, especially those in the NET Bible (an outstanding work).
Dear Mike, in conclusion: thank you so much. Having said that, I now remember that Jesus is The Word, the Living Word, and He has sent the Holy Spirit to call to mind all that Jesus said, and wrestling and listening and evaluating all these things you taught (and several hours listening to others online too) I am now convinced that Jesus via the Holy Spirit IS the inerrant Word of God to us, and my hope is in Him. And, Oh, the storm of controversy, yet He is True and faithful, and no-one will snatch me/us out of His hand, and you, Holy Spirit, are the Spirit of Truth.

Grew up Catholic- I don't remember which translation we had but it sounded like an older NABRE? Sounded somewhat like the described RSV. What I did know is that as a Catholic I felt like the only person I knew who actually read the Bible that wasn't clergy 😂. Left Catholicism in my teens and spent many years keeping Jesus at arms length. I was saved at a Calvary Chapel a few years ago (finding Mike's channel was a coincidence) and felt overwhelmed by the translation options. I'm doing a full read through and have been using the NIV (Zondervan study Bible version). It's just so easy to read through and understand while focusing my extra effort on the high level study Bible points. Glad to hear it's a good choice for clarity. Once I get through it I think I might try an NASB study Bible to get into more of the details. Thank you so much for this video Mike, your work has been so helpful, especially for folks like me hungry for teachings as I grow in faith and share that faith with my family. I find I can always depend on your content to be thorough and honest. As a scientist I deeply appreciate your approach as it closely mirrors the way I think.
Hey I’m a bit confused about a couple things - you say repeatedly it’s good when Bible translations are based off of the newer texts - but surely you would want a translation based off of texts as close to the time of the described events as possible? Sorry if this was discussed and I missed it or misunderstood. Also, I thought the King James Version was published first in 1611, but I read that the Texus Receptus was published in 1516 so how could it have been based on the KJV? Again, sorry I must have missed something somehow
One thing I am sure of: theology and doctrine is related to the versions we read. I used a NASB in a congregation that used the NIV. I promise you that the differences that result in doctrine and theology are significant, leading to the point of heresy and apostasy. I left that church two years ago.

@@judyswiderski2682 I think you are missing the context there. Jesus' brothers were mocking him, saying he should go show himself publicly at the feast, because they didn't believe him. Jesus, in context, was saying he wasn't going in the way they wanted him to, because it wasn't time. So he went privately.
Eugene Peterson, if I was taught correctly at college, I was told he wasn’t even a Christian when writing The Message. The best use of The Message is as kindling.

28:17 -- The NKJV is based on the Textus Receptus but not quite the same edition of the Textus Receptus that embodies the base-text of the KJV New Testament. Luke 1:35, for example, is slightly different: the KJV has the phrase "of thee" there but the NKJV does not. This is due to a textual difference; it is not as if the NKJV's translators thought the phrase was superfluous.

I love my KJV. I’m 47 and this is the version I have read my whole life. I guess because I have used it for so long the old English doesn’t both me. If I run across a word I’m confused by I just look it up. Recently I bought a NASB to try, but I didn’t like how it footnoted some parts I am used to reading in the KJV so I returned it. I think I’m going to try a parallel Bible instead. That way I can easily compare.

When I came back to church in my early 30s I bought myself a NIV bible even though my church was an only KJV crowd. I fell in love with the NIV version and read the whole Bible in less than a year. Because of it's easy to read and easy to understand reading I felt the Holy Spirit work through the words and have been brought to tears and into a state of humbleness of just how merciful and righteous and mighty our God is. If the NIV can work through a member of a Conservative independent Baptist member, it is the word of God. The only difference is that I and my young children can understand better when we read the Bible together.
Thank you Pastor Mike for this amazing educational sermon...so many people need to hear this and stop bashing other Christians on their bible preference. The bad translations is often clearly seen by true Christians anyway.

In fact many verses in my native language are far more accurate, in depth and have a better understanding than the words English has to offer. There are words in other languages that takes a whole English paragraph to grasp the concept. I'm not for translations influenced by the world, but I am for a person being able to understand God is trying to say. In the end all versions except for the very first language given to the apostles and other writers of the old testament are not going to be the exact words but the concept remains the same. I can tell you a flower is pretty in other words, beautiful, gorgeous, stunning
I had a friend who was KJV only and eventually lost our friendship. She was very judgmental and would often shame me for using other translations.
@@midnitglory no people turn from the faith because they're taught God's word is not perfect, only the original manuscripts were perfect, and those don't exist anymore. People run from the faith because they decide, "If God can't keep His word perfect, than I can't trust Him". People leave the faith because they compare bible versions and they quickly realize they all teach very different things, which is lying, and which is telling the truth. A perfect example is the very first verse in the bible. A perverted version will make "heaven" plural, thus changing everything and making a liar out of God. "Heaven" teaches there's one universe, while "heavens" teaches there are multiple universes. Which one is the lie, and which is the truth? I've seen countless people reject the faith because of the lies taught by people like Winger and others, but I've seen very few people leave the faith because of Textus Receptus only teachings. Btw, study the manuscript history, you'll see that all new versions use perverted manuscripts. People can get saved off of perverted bibles, but they cannot spiritually grow.
I always stick to ESV, NKJV, or KJV.
The ESV is easy to understand with today's English and is a more literal translation than others, the KJV and NKJV I read also simply because my grandfather was a KJV only type of man and he was the man in my life that brought me to Christ, not by preaching or forcing me to church but leading by example. He was more of a man than I will ever be. Read his Bible and prayed daily no matter what the rest of the family was doing, always said grace and thanked the Lord for a meal. God bless you Grandpa I miss you, can't wait to see you again when I can be reunited with you and the Lord in heaven.

I can't stand the KJV. A couple very accurate translations but the rest are awful. The HalleluYah Scriptures are the best at using the original names of people, God & Yeshua & everything else. It isn't an easier read but it makes more sense now.
I just started reading some ESV and I love it. I’ve mainly only read KJV, Just because the churches I’ve been to usually stick to it, not to say that they’re only KJV (although about three people I know are) just that the KJV is there go to. And I completely agree with your statement.
@@Gen-ZChristian Ive bounced back and forth between KJV and NASB1995 but then it was pointed out to me that some verses from KJV were missing from the NASB and that threw me off. I like in the bible app though, I can go to a verse and switch between different versions to see what they all say

@@addictedtojesus922 Haha yeah I've found myself looking at the wording of a bible and felt sure it was worded differently a few years earlier in the same version. So I always have my trusty hard copies of my favourite bibles in my backpack. I've come to this video for help in selecting 2 or 3 that I feel I can trust (after disastrously trying to read The Message fabrication). I've made my choices and will be obtaining hard copies over the next couple weeks and will be replacing my old NKJV in the backpack.

@@GM-uy3cm I have been listening to numerous preachers on line for several years. Many of them seemed to be preaching sound doctrine. Upon more closer scrutiny I discovered that only a handful are genuine. No one is perfect all will make ERRORS that is one thing. I find it impossible to believe that Winger supports bibles like the NIV through some innocent mistake, particularly when he does seem to know things well. So that means he preaches according to various trabslations? That is unacceptable.
I listened for years to very knowledgeable preachers like Walter Vieth, Mike Hoggard and even Kent Hovind who all have no excuse for preaching the fallacies they preach considering they preach a large majority of valid material.
Satanists are everywhere and seek to deceive the flocks. Some like Joel Osteen, are obvious liars while others like John MacArthur rely on more subtle means to deceive.
Sorry I don't trust well versed biblical teachers that support massive lies like the NIV. It wasn't till I stopped listening to a lot of these men that I trusted for years did I finally begin to understand many key biblical teachings esp Revelation. The KJV stands with the original texts. Many other translations have removed verses which is a big no no. A perfect example is the ESV. It has omitted 16 verses of the Bible. That should be very concerning. I'd recommend the Thomas Nelson reference edition. It is red letter with updated meaning references in the center bar of the page and capitalizes prophetic sayings in the NT and on and on. It really sticks to the original translation as best as the English language can and includes all verses from the original texts. I'm concerned that people point at King James only'ists as though that's an issue but they don't have any concern (or clue maybe) of the omitted verses and also changed verses.
When I was first born again I fell into the King James only camp. I was given a book from my pastor which put forward the case for other translations. I do read others and have a NLT and an NIV at home which helps me to understand and appreciate the word but I have to say, when I feel the need to read psalm 119 (which I read more often than any other psalm) I always read it from the King James. Something about that translation of the psalm gets across the feelings and awe and in parts, the desperation of David as he begs God almighty to guide him and protect him etc and I gain confidence to come to God in my hour of need as David did.
If one does a comparative version analysis of pre-kjv with kjv of psalm 119, one can see that the translators were taking pieces from other translations and having that be the kjv. (i.e. - verse 1 same as douay, first part of verse 2 same as the bishops bible, while the second half of verse 2 is nearly identical to douay with only "and" put in as the difference, verse 3 a revisement of Geneva, and verse 4 nearly identical to Geneva with the exception of "us", verse 5 same as Geneva, verse 6 a revisement of the Bishops bible for the first half, with the second part of verse 6 back to Geneva... shall I go on?)

Great video Mike! In fact, this is about the third time I've watched. A few years ago, I started buying Bibles from all of the main translations. I accepted Christ reading the NIV84, and as a result, my wife and four children also read it, albeit the NIV2011.
I agree with paraphrase Bibles also, especially The Living Bible. But I will say this, I believe my father, before passing in 1995, accepted Christ by reading The Living Bible. I still have that Bible he read, and his notes in it lead me to believe he accepted Christ, and I am so grateful for that.=)
"Having it in the belly" is an interesting phrase. Makes me think of the phrase "had a bun in the oven". I will look out for a translation in the future saying "Mary was found to have a bun in the oven.".

I recomment NET, HCSB, ESV, and NASB. You can't go wrong with any of those 4 they're all very accurate and very easy to understand

I am fussy, used NKJV since it came out, could never find anything else I felt hit the spot. I teach from it, and appreciate as you said, the nuances. I want something authoritative, (I do NOT mean authorized by King James! who cares!) So this was VERY WELL DONE MIKE WINGER. The king James English was generally the language of the people of that time. As a first ever Christian in my family, I got converted at 20 years old and used the king James for over 40 years. I now use the NLT for my devotional time but I use the NKJV for memorising and to enjoy the beauty of the language and prose and poetry etc. I never doubted the deity of The Lord Jesus Christ at any time in the 40 years I used the King James. My mother who came to Jesus when she was 72. She was almost illiterate and yet read the KJV for the rest of her life and loved it and she grew in her faith. Remember we don’t generally change old classics, Ustinov, Pliny, Jane Austin, Wordsworth, Dickins, well I could go on…..you get the picture. Those who have tried to update say Jane Austin have totally ruined it, same with Shakespeare. So the KJV has been understood by many generations, even many working class people, which is my background, and they grew in their love, knowledge and obedience to Christ and their understanding of living to please God. Of course, the most early version of KJV is too difficult for many but hey….the message translation is so lacking of any impact upon my heart or mind but if it helps others..go for it. But for me and I am a Pentecostal I say LONG LIVE THE KJV/NKJV.

The problem I have had over the years has been where Christian Ministers would say something about the Bible and various translations in a very negative way and the results has been that it has created a lot of doubts about the Bible so much so that it has taken my faith away from Christ Himself! If I can not have faith in the Bible How can I have faith in anything it says. It has taken a lot of persistence and work on my part to move past this and to be more careful to who I listen to.So again Thank you for your ministry that is building up my faith again and I am extremely thankful to God for ministers such as your self who has given me back my faith again!

Your videos make me reeeeeeaaaally miss my pastor from the church I originally attended when I was saved in the early 90s. Like you, his messages & teachings were highly informative, researched, clear, compelling, non-emotionally driven, scholarly-MEATY! That was when I lived in Southern California, but I had to move to Ohio because CA was just too expensive. Just moved to South Carolina, and will be trying to find a church. I often battle between the ESV, NASB 95, and the CSB. Those are like the best translations on the market in my opinion 😂 it’s honestly hard.
Esv is great for its combination of poetic literality. It does everything the KJV does well in a modern Bible translation! It’s hard to beat.
CSB is the absolute perfect balance between literal translation and dynamic translation. It’s like the ESV and the NIV had a baby. It’s honestly one of the single most beautiful translations I’ve ever read.
NASB 95: is amazing for its goal of literality! It is beyond literal to a fault and it actually is cool to me. It’s changed how I see and understand scriptures due to this fact.
*sigh* perhaps I’ll just have to continue being that one guy who always lugs multiple bibles around

I am in the KJV only camp, and the ministry I am under prefers that version due to what you described, the beauty and essence of god's word. We have to look up definitions of some words at times, but that requires effort and it is always effort well spent in my opinion. Jesus obviously did not speak in old english, but as an English only speaker, having to put in effort to understand certain passages by re-reading them over and over at times really pulls me in to a place where I am actively trying to receive the message, and that is a beautiful thing.
What you describe doesn't sound like KJV only in the way the term is actually used
The problem is the deliberate changes and distortions imbedded in the KJV to suit the prejudices of the commissioning patron - King James.

I find this very helpful. I am a Christian 57 years now, since 1966. I love greatly the King James Bible, years later when ESV came along I use that a lot also. I read through the 1st one mentioned here many times, and used it "forever" in regular study and general reading...and since the ESV came out I have read through and use this as much as my favorite King James.
I have the NASB and the Holman Bibles too and love them. The Holman has their references at the end of the Bible verses , VERY helpful for different reasons, a big one being more easy on my 79 year old eyes. I loved your video and brief but accurate description of the Bibles...I agree on all.

The only thing I would suggest is when you're speaking about the NASB be sure to mention its ancestor, the 1901 ASV and then the 1977 NASB of which the '95 NASB is the update. Next the RSV also had a '71 update. Lastly, the NIV was first completed in '78 and then slightly revised in '84.

I appreciate your reply. What does the version you're studying say in Deut:32:8-9? Sons of Israel or Sons of God? I've been reading the Amplified & NKJV side by side and I've found they're mostly similar but I confess I haven't gotten as far as a comparison in Proverbs 7; ditto for John. Hence the recommendation to use the Good News Bible or the ESV. However, given the tools available to me now, the Amplified has been great when it comes to understanding the context of the Bible's writers; seeing as I'm geeking out over the Old Testament.
I'm pretty certain that if we applied the same criteria for verse to verse equivalency across most versions of the Bible, we'd arrive at the conclusion that most were wrong, even evil if they didn't apply across the board. There's always a hint of the translator's world view. Thankfully, we have the tools to compare across versions and pray for guidance so we're certain. Does it make sense in the context of the writers' Ancient Near Eastern worldview and salvation theme of the Bible?

Will let you know that the Son never walked this earth as Jesus. There isn't a letter "J" or sound in Hebrew. We have a Jewish Savior . . . who doesn't have an English name. Thus, there's only one Name for Salvation (Acts 4:12).

@@davidpetersonharvey Your comment totally contradicts correctly interpreted Scriptures. You won't find the name Jesus or the pagan title God nowhere. Elohim is the proper title for God and is plural: it represents the Father, Son, and Ruach (Spirit) are ONE.
The Son was never named Joseph. We both no that . . . so at best that's a serious mistake. Acts 4:12 makes it crystal clear that He has only One Name. Consequently, the Son spoke His Hebrew Name to Shaul (he was never called Paul) from Heaven and this is emphasized 3 times in Acts for a reason (read Acts 9:15).
Consequently, the Name Shaul spoke to Greeks and Jews was YAHSHUA. That Name was used to fulfill Matthew 28:19, which is another verse seriously misinterpreted by men. That verse is erroneously recited by MOST churches when baptizing people when it doesn't contain the Name.
If you want to follow the traditions of men and the numerous flaws in their teachings then go ahead. However, if you truly want to seek the Truth, your Heavenly Father will reveal it to you.

@@Michael0841Friend, why nitpick on someone because they use two Bible translations you personally dislike? I’m pretty sure we could find fault with some passages in any translation. They are translating from different languages over hundreds of years. If you’re KJV only, I think you’re missing out but I’m not going to attack a brother because of his (or her) choice of translation. I first read the NIV, NLT, and now compare between NASB, ESV, NKJV, KJV, NIV, and even the Catholic I grew up with (but never read) to see the variations. Sometimes I’ll look at 8 different versions of a sentence to see how each translates it. If we force someone or try to shame them into reading what we think is best, we come across as judgmental about things we shouldn’t be. It’s not sin or salvation at risk. Let’s love each other and build each other up in Christ. That’s what I believe Jesus would do. And I’m paraphrasing, but Paul said he became different things to different people when witnessing. Some of us come to Christ through shows on TV that lead us to scripture. If a new believer approaches and we are not willing to help them learn wherever they are, how are we a light? Isn’t that more important than the Bible translation someone picks? Especially since most who grow in Christ advance to more meaty versions. We have to call out sin. But we don’t have to call out our every preference as perfect. I am not trying to be offensive, rather to remind myself and others that not everything is a fight. God bless!

Mike, thank you for the video. I wanted to ask you to comment on this very important point: the early church fathers do include the famous Mark 16:9-20, JN 7:53-8:11, 1Jn 5:7. This demonstrates that that the early church did use those passages as Scripture.
Thus, IMO, Textus Receptus manuscripts in the KJV and my Russian Synodal version and other versions based on Textus Receptus didn't actually add these verses, but rightly included them as the oldest tradition in the church.
The Westcott & Hort text came in later than the early church fathers and didn't include those passages mentioned above.
The early church fathers predate the Westcott & Hort Alexandrian and Vatican manuscripts.
I have gotten this point from this brother. I like that he doesn't state that the KJV is the inspired Word of God, but the Greek manuscripts are the God-breathed Word of God.

For me this whole version issue revolves around how one answers this simple question:
Do you believe God has preserved His inspired word for us today in English? Simple yes or no.
If your answer is "no" then your free to use whichever version floats your boat. You can apply your own human preference and go for it.
However if you answer the above question "yes", your task is a bit different. All you have to do is search through the various versions for mistakes. God does not make mistakes.
Think on this: inspiration without preservation is a Devine waste of time.
Let me add:
The Word of God is Jesus Christ (capital w) while the word of God is ink on paper.

In contradiction to actual manuscripts. So as to accommodate the spirit of this age.

I would like to add some additional 'pros' of the NASB that the ESV lacks.
The NASB...
1) NASB includes some majority text alternatives in brackets within the text, whereas the ESV will have it as a footnote or not at all.
2) NASB italicizes words that were added to the text, not found in the manuscripts, like what the NKJV does.
3) NASB capitalizes pronouns referring to God, whereas the ESV does not.
Those are a few of the reasons I switched from the ESV after several years of using it as my main translation to the NASB as my main. Plus the NASB footnotes are better. I still live the ESV, don't mean to knock it, but I think its too similar to the NASB but just falls short in too many ways to keep me preferring it over the NASB.
I also enjoy using the NKJV a lot, I probably use the NASB and NKJV split 50/50 these days.
Good to know I have always liked the ESV. I haven't read from the NASB but I like how the ESV uses footnotes to explain verses that are commonly used out of context.
Once of the chief translators of the NASB said he fears judgement day because of being part of producing the nasb.
These three are my favourite versions, the NASB NKJV and the ESV. I'd also love the HCSB but it is sadly rare.

Yes agree, I like the NASB 1995, it’s readable and I like that they include the debated verses unlike other modern translations. Missing verses from the New Testament in modern bibles bugs me as I grew up with KJV.

I've used mostly the NKJV for the past 30 years, but considering what I've learned from Mike here, I'm going to order a copy of the CSB note taking Bible and the ESV study Bible for reference.
I do love my NKJV but always found it helpful to see how others translated a verse when I dive in to study. I'm really looking forward to that CSB.

Keep in mind that Dr. White never mentions that the copyright laws that require the book have 15% change in meaning to get a copyright (and therefore make money) and that Dr. White works for the company that owns the rights to the NASB

If I may, I'd like to respond point-by-point to clarify some things you say in this talk. If this seems critical, please don't take it personally but as a response to your sources rather than to you.
3:49 -- The KJV NT was not based on just six Greek manuscripts. That's how many Erasmus had available to him in Basel when he compiled the first edition of the Textus Receptus. Bur research on the New Testament text did not start in Basel; nor did it end there. Erasmus had studied other manuscripts, and he was informed about readings in some manuscripts he had not personally seen (by Lorenzo Valla's notes, for example). Erasmus continued to tweak his compilation in later editions and the more time passed, the more manuscripts' readings he gained access to. He even had a list of 365 readings from Vaticanus.
Plus, in the 1500's, scholars such as Stephanus used additional manuscripts, citing manuscripts such as Codex Bezae and Codex Claromontanus, amd minuscule 69 and minuscule 6, and others. In addition, the scholars of the 1500's made abundant use of patristic citations, which in some cases are so extensive (such as in Augustine's writings) that it is almost like having the writer's exemplar in hand. The KJV's translators had access to all that previous work -- the Complutensian Polyglot, Erasmus' compilations, Stephanus' annotated editions, Beza's editions, versional research, and more.
Still, that dies not necessary make the KJV the best version.
I really appreciated this video. I use the KJV for general use (reading and study) but I also apreciate several other versions as references. The Scriptures 2009, ESV, NIV, NMV, even the Orthodox Jewish Bible has been helpful at times.
Overall I watch out for anything that completely changes or seems to distort the overall messages of the Gospel, God's Word and claim to be "one of a kind" like the TPT and NWT for example.

I love checking out the different translations…I often sit in my recliner, late at night with 4 Bibles opened to the same scriptures…just love that !!!! HOWEVER, at age 72, and being "in church" most of my life, I discovered on more than one occasion some of the rudest, narcissistic people in our congregation were those Bible nerds who took great pride in knowing scripture, showing off their extensive library of "spiritual " material…. My point ? I love having 12 Bibles but if I don’t lead my life in such a way that is pleasing to my creator…..all is for naught. Have a great day/night everyone !!
I use the esv for study, but use the nlt for when I struggle to understand specific phrases
This is a great video.. I was part of KJV only years ago.. Thank you for this video, the influence and doubt it causes for all other versions was very hard to overcome. I have loved the ESV for many years now..
HE IS wrong, as a JW I can use ANY bible translation EXCEPT my UGLY one, and prove exactly the same thing I believe, when you have the knowledge it doesnt matter the translation, but know all the verses that lead to reach certain understanding of what the bible teach....and I can prove that , choose the topic and the translation you want...and message me
Thank you for this video Pastor Mike! I’ve been a Christian my whole life (22 years old), was raised in a non denominational church and grew up reading the NIV. I never really thought twice about translations and wasn’t very informed on all the different ones Ava I Le. I’ve recently become very interested in translations as I’ve grown so much in my faith and my reverence for God’s word. I got a “She Reads Truth” CSB Bible as a gift and really enjoy it so far. I haven’t seen anything alarming, but would love to know your thoughts if you have time to look into this version! Thanks again and God bless you Pastor!
CSB is just an updated version of the HCSB which I believe he covers in this video.
For 6 years, my wife and I have been leading an entire read-through of the (Protestant) Bible, starting at the beginning and going cover-to-cover. The joke has always been that might not get to Revelation before it happened. (We were just about to start Revelation when COVID hit, and we haven't met in a year.) Anyway, I encouraged people to bring different translations so we could compare them as we read. It has been very informative, mainly in that we're still getting the same meaning time and again.
I love this video! And I have recommended it many times. This is my third or fourth time listening through!

Mike, i love the KJV, i find every good doctrine there, i feel God's presence while reading it and i really believe God has preserved his word and this translation is good enough for me, I sometimes use the ESV too but i believe all good and sound christianity doctrine can be found on the KJV.
It is wise to look at the evidence when choosing the version we use.

In this sense, there is a level of precision in the Greek text that is conveyed by the use of these English pronouns. The singular/plural distinction is unfortunately lost in modern English, except in dialects which employ "y'all," y'uns," etc.
Yes the singular and plural you exist in hebrew greek and other languages such as Arabic and farsi
Also, the use of thee and thour in the KJV, those pronouns were used when speaking to family and friends, while a singular you is formal, for those who are not close to us or to indicate a distinction of class or social rank. I don't use the KJV, but I do wish people knew that the pronouns are used to show God's love for us, not formality.
In Exodus 20 the giving of the Ten Commandments. Moses uses singular second person pronouns. You and your are all singular second person pronouns. The y’s are not plural .
The Textus Receptus was not from kjb it was before the kjv by Erasmus, Theodore Beza, and Estefanus. I think you're trying to mislead people by saying it's the other way around, that's very deceptive.
It was the NIV that finally turned the light on for me (after YEARS of reading the bible). When I read the book of Romans in the NIV and Paul is talking about "the flesh", the NIV uses the expression "sinful nature". For some reason, that simple phrase made me finally understand the book of Romans and Paul's gospel. (And it is uniquely Paul's gospel that he is teaching in Romans and Galatians. None of the other churches at the time were hearing this message. In fact, Paul comes right out and labels it, "My Gospel" at the end of Romans.
Rom. 16:25a - Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel,
Paul's gospel.)

The NIV 1984 can still be found. In my opinion it is much better than 2011. I have bought many copies so that it will available to my children's children!! I read the Bible every year and swap up the translations and find blessings in them all (never read The Message, NWT, NIRV or ISV and years since I read The Living Bible). I have also read The Jewish Bible and recommend it. Thanks for a great review.

When you were talking about translators it made me laugh because i had a similar experience in Ecuador on a missions trip. Our pastor was preaching and the missionary was translating. He said "spring in your step" and the missionary stopped for a second and was trying to explain that idiom in Spanish. The crowd was laughing at the situation and the pastor was so confused! 😂

I personally use the NLT as my daily reading version with a fallback to the NASB when I want something that is strongly word for word.

In my former job, I had to translate legal documents from Spanish into English. I had to do a literal translation-word for word-of the document. It was very difficult whenever I came across particular Spanish words that had no English equivalents. I then thought of which other words could I use that were similar in meaning, or synonyms. Even though I am very fluent in Spanish, English is my dominant language, and so I had to make sure to have the finished English translation read as fluidly as it did in the Spanish. Now, think about modern-day translators having to translate the Greek used from almost 2000 years ago, and you can begin to appreciate their finished work when you can read and understand it, and best of all, capture nuances that are in the original language now translated into English.

I have read the RSV for 44 years and am totally addicted. I compare it with other good translations and write in the changes if I think it necessary.
@@JohnMustartPsalm91 that's a great idea: write in the changes. I used to read all the italics foot notes at the bottom of the NIV. Very insightful.
I love the RSV. It is very close to the KJV (which I also love), but it doesn’t sound so stridently archaic in some spots. I can say “walk” instead of “walketh.” Also, I tend to shun the forcing of a messianic reading of the Bible unless the Hebrew is unambiguous.

The KJV has some dynamic equivalency in it too, sometimes in places where more word-for-word modern versions such as NASB do not. On the other hand, in many cases it's more word-for-word, obscure, and ambiguous than most modern translations. It is this way with all translations--NKJV, NASB, ESV, NET, NIV, NLT, you name it: they often differ in a given passage or phrase on how word-for-word or thought-for-thought they translate it.
Also, you simply cannot characterize one as more accurate than another; it's more complicated than that, and accuracy is a matter of subjectivity and opinion. That's why comparing translations one of the most useful things you can do in Bible study, especially if you make use of footnotes, especially those in the NET Bible (an outstanding work).
So...ALL bibles are untrustworthy in the end?
I always take it that if a passage differs we are getting a fresh perspective or a new detail. Just go to Bible hub and read Daniel 9: 27.

Dear Mike, in conclusion: thank you so much. Having said that, I now remember that Jesus is The Word, the Living Word, and He has sent the Holy Spirit to call to mind all that Jesus said, and wrestling and listening and evaluating all these things you taught (and several hours listening to others online too) I am now convinced that Jesus via the Holy Spirit IS the inerrant Word of God to us, and my hope is in Him. And, Oh, the storm of controversy, yet He is True and faithful, and no-one will snatch me/us out of His hand, and you, Holy Spirit, are the Spirit of Truth.

Clear word is a paraphrase Bible not intended for study.
Grew up Catholic- I don't remember which translation we had but it sounded like an older NABRE? Sounded somewhat like the described RSV. What I did know is that as a Catholic I felt like the only person I knew who actually read the Bible that wasn't clergy 😂. Left Catholicism in my teens and spent many years keeping Jesus at arms length. I was saved at a Calvary Chapel a few years ago (finding Mike's channel was a coincidence) and felt overwhelmed by the translation options. I'm doing a full read through and have been using the NIV (Zondervan study Bible version). It's just so easy to read through and understand while focusing my extra effort on the high level study Bible points. Glad to hear it's a good choice for clarity. Once I get through it I think I might try an NASB study Bible to get into more of the details. Thank you so much for this video Mike, your work has been so helpful, especially for folks like me hungry for teachings as I grow in faith and share that faith with my family. I find I can always depend on your content to be thorough and honest. As a scientist I deeply appreciate your approach as it closely mirrors the way I think.
Hey I’m a bit confused about a couple things - you say repeatedly it’s good when Bible translations are based off of the newer texts - but surely you would want a translation based off of texts as close to the time of the described events as possible? Sorry if this was discussed and I missed it or misunderstood.
Also, I thought the King James Version was published first in 1611, but I read that the Texus Receptus was published in 1516 so how could it have been based on the KJV? Again, sorry I must have missed something somehow

One thing I am sure of: theology and doctrine is related to the versions we read. I used a NASB in a congregation that used the NIV. I promise you that the differences that result in doctrine and theology are significant, leading to the point of heresy and apostasy. I left that church two years ago.

@@judyswiderski2682 I think you are missing the context there. Jesus' brothers were mocking him, saying he should go show himself publicly at the feast, because they didn't believe him.
Jesus, in context, was saying he wasn't going in the way they wanted him to, because it wasn't time. So he went privately.
I use the KJB as my primary bible and the NLT as my secondary bible because I believe it reads more clearly and conveys the message better.
Hebrew Quotes the NLT also brings out the nuances of the Greek and Hebrew better that the more conservative versions

28:17 -- The NKJV is based on the Textus Receptus but not quite the same edition of the Textus Receptus that embodies the base-text of the KJV New Testament. Luke 1:35, for example, is slightly different: the KJV has the phrase "of thee" there but the NKJV does not. This is due to a textual difference; it is not as if the NKJV's translators thought the phrase was superfluous.

I love my KJV. I’m 47 and this is the version I have read my whole life. I guess because I have used it for so long the old English doesn’t both me. If I run across a word I’m confused by I just look it up. Recently I bought a NASB to try, but I didn’t like how it footnoted some parts I am used to reading in the KJV so I returned it. I think I’m going to try a parallel Bible instead. That way I can easily compare.
Stay with it. Its the Texus Receptus...Uses the Majority text of manuscripts. Look at the MEV. It is one of the "only" modern TR translations
