I have to say, I've been pleasantly surprised by how well this video has been received so far, and I'm glad that people seem to be liking it. I was half expecting a bunch of die-hard PRS fans to get very angry at me for daring to make the comparison.

Everything looked great! Only remark i will make is the final lacquer layer. I could see a lot of orange peel. It might be the spray-can. Anyway, you could buff it out for a much smoother final look.

Anyone watching this build who has bever built a guitar should know that this guy _goes for it._
It's a testament to his confidence and skill that he approaches the processes as he does. Those small captions where he notes that he's doing something "the hard way" are indeed true. The whole build was very gutsy. Lots of potential for error/scrap.
    Pretty amazing.

hey, your inlay and fretwork are really good, you made everything look super neat, and the work with that truss rod cover was sweet. I was wondering why you didn't cut and buff the finish on the body though, cause that burl looks really good as is, but it might look better under a smoother finish. your fretwork is also amazing, and I'm actually really impressed by the way you filled the fret ends. all in all, amazing build

Incredible job! Only critique would be the lacquer finish. It looks "sticky" or something. Not as smooth as a real PRS or high end guitar. I am not a woodworker or craftsman at all, so I'm far from an expert. Just my $.02. Otherwise it's an incredible job and it obviously plays well!

Neat fret marker bars. Nice and clean. Is the main body of the neck red cedar or redwood? I just don't understand why most people when putting a top on a guitar body don't rout in the wiring channels before gluing on the top. If the channel was routed in before the top goes on the risk of drilling out the top or back later is avoided completely. The guitar did turn out very nice.

    You’re honestly a quality craftsman.
    You’ve meticulously built this guitar.

    …………
    I’m a luthier,
I understand that you didn’t have a spray gun to put on the finish.
What seriously bothers ,me is all the time sweat and tears,
you’ve put into this beautiful guitar, why didn’t you at least
buff out the sprayed on finish? You could’ve removed the orange
peel from it. It would’ve looked so much better.
You could’ve even used Danish oil and give the guitar the
    finish it deserved.
Please don’t think that I’m insulting you.
I just cry looking at the finish and all you’ve put into this guitar.

  • @antonrandle4146

Great work as always, the guitar looks fab. Two questions though, Where did you get the rounded spade drill bits to do the control knob cavities and secondly, have you considered routing the wiring runs before attaching the top, rather than using the long drill bit method-which always makes me nervous!!?

    • @OrbitalGuitars
      @OrbitalGuitars  2 місяці тому

The rounded spade bit is just a cheap regular spade bit that I rounded the corners off of with a file. And I have pre-routed wiring channels before, but I don't remember now why I didn't do that on this build.

@@antonrandle4146 I think that would be a little too small. Besides, I like how much more control I have with a drill press than I would with a router.

Looks great, but it must be heavy, PRS's are thinner than Les Paul's to cut down on the uncomfortable weight.I rounded over my tone, volume, switch recesses because that is the way some of the more expensive PRS's were, and frankly I thought the Knobs didn't look good inside a fairly large crater.

as a non guitar builder but watcher of guitar build videos on youtube, i must say i was impressed by your woodworking skills and beautiful choice of woods and hardware. however, *in my opinion* the transition from back of body to neck could be more delicate/gradual and the overall rattle-can finish leaves a lot to be desired. as the video progressed, i kept thinking "when are they going to sand out that orange-peel?" and then "wait, are they installing hardware now?" its a shame you put in so much hard work and attention to detail to then leave that funky textured clear-coat as the final finishing ): im sorry for being such a bummer, i loved watching your video and look forward to future builds. i just wish you put as much effort into the finishing process as you did the rest of the build. thats my 2 cents anyways.

Here's a frustrating thing I have recently come to see.
I've been building guitars for a few years, and until recently, the physical dimensions of parts and hardware didn't really occupy my mind all that much. But now...
Truss rods in particular seem stupidly designed. Too many minute differences in size along the entire assembly, such that you can't simply use for example a 1/4" cutter from end to end to make the channel? Why is the barrel .025" wider than three rest of the assembly? Who knows?
Why are tuner posts 25/64" when they could just be 3/8"?
Why don't tuning machines with extruded bosses instead of screw lobes not come with a drill template for those damnable things?
Why are those flush mount neck bolt washers 19/32" when they could just .5"?
There are probably more eccentricities to do with parts, and who knows, maybe I just haven't seen everything that's out there.
I'm not conspiratorially minded, but am I crazy for thinking this feels a but like gate keeping? By whom I know not, btw.
Tell me I'm crazy if you think so lol
