I am learning a lot from you. You are an amazing teacher. I now have house plants because of your channel. I want to grow old taking care of my plants. I even talk to them now.
Yes, plants and travels which you find intriguing and for which you enjoy explaining your insight, also make an educationally, entertaining video. 👍 You can also be the guest speaker sometimes. 😁👌
Ur episodes are truelly an encyclopedia fr plant lovers. U should portray more photos of plants wth their names and place of origin, in all episodes of field trips around the world. Those plant photo shots might be the last of its kind documented by anyone. Keep up the gr8 work!
I'm an adult with no kids, but I would so visit Nong Nooch when i eventually visit Thailand. One of my fave rides in Disneyland is the Jungle Cruise, not because of the ride but because of all the flora incorporated into the ride. I wish more botanical gardens were designed like theme parks to try and encourage more interest in botany, horticulture, and agriculture.
I really thank you for this video because a lot of times people think botanical gardens and other scientific institutions in this field are just beautiful gardens or it isn't that much work. But once you immerse yourself in the diversity, you first become aware of everything that grows in the non-public greenhouses of a botanical garden and also learn how important it is to preserve the genetic diversity of species, but also to later establish an endangered species in its natural habitat. So thank you! :)
when you said " oh where have I've seen this plant and you take review the videos", I told myself Geez! I should memorize like her. Thank You Summer ❤❤❤
I visit Amsterdam a lot and De Hortus is my absolute favourite Botanical Garden I've ever been to. It's by far not the most glamorous or biggest collection but the tropical greenhouses are so beautiful and the little cafe there is the perfect spot to get coffee and a homemade herbbutter.☺️
So why don’t botanical gardens start selling small cuttings of rarer species to the public in a gift shop setting, to ensure the varieties don’t get lost and as a way of fundraising to sustain the institution. It seems like a no brainer. I’m sure people would buy them. Perlagoniums would certainly work in this model. Is it just an ivory tower thing?
That makes sense. People would also contribute and help saving a particular species especially if it’s an endangered one buy purchasing cuts from botanical gardens.
a lot of botanical gardens already have issues being able to propagate certain rare plants, and some do give out cuttings (though not to the public) but i really agree there are so many species that could become common houseplants with the right attention
I worked in a scientific collection and with scientific collections. It is not as easy like you may think there are rules like the Nagoya Protokoll which do not allow to give plant material away and other stuff. Also a lot of plant you might think would be a good houseplant aren't good houseplants. Especially why should botanical gardens share plants who are used in research? And mostly the plants you find in the public glasshouses are also find in private collections and in nurserys. Growing endangered plants at home is one thing but growing endangered plants at home for conservation is not working at all, because you have to be sure that no selection or hybridazation is happening etc. And btw. mostly Botanical Gardens do not have enough gardeners and horticulturist to grow for sellers.... Really, the situation for scientific collections is not so easy it might look and growing some plants you need to be as professionell as you can be.
@@marvinsanu3766 thanks for bringing your expertise in answering my question. I certainly recognize all the issues you mentioned, but I still think there is room for a moderate proposal. I’m sure there are enough species that would do ok as house plants and propagate easily enough but are not usually offered in the market and that there are no restrictions on sharing them. If offered as small cuttings, say for around 10 dollars they could help raise money for the gardens so they continue their important work of conservation. I just see it as a missed opportunity at a gift shop. Much better than cheaply made trinkets. They would also help awaken the love for plants in people. The begonias are a good example. There are plenty weird species that don’t sell well in the market that would probably sell to people visiting botanical gardens just because of the draw of diversity.
@@blunderbuss1395 yes. I’m not even talking about the super rare and super difficult ones. As long as they are not easily found in a big box store, they would be game. A lot of non collector plant lovers visit botanical gardens but don’t necessarily go hunting down different species in specialized vendors.
Orchid collection at Denver Botanic Garden...that's one to see that's not public. You probably have met Panayoti Kelaidis. DBG is the rock garden king as well (along with the Betty Ford alpine garden in Vail, CO)
Great Video!!!! I have seen all of those already and have gone back and watched numerous times to just absorb all the great info you put out!!! Always love what you do Summer!!!!!
The point with the direct light for hoyas is, in Thailand the sun is much stronger(because closer to the sun/equator) than in north america or europe where I live. So we can put hoyas in direct light, but in Thailand or Ecuador for example they have to shade them a little bit.
We have more than 1600 endemic species here in Haiti and, though I am trying to document them photographically through iNaturalist, there is no one collecting or conserving them! Would be a wonderful project for someone a little younger than me!
Gorgeous trip down memory lane! I loved your tour around the huge Nong Nooch gardens (who doesn't like a dinosaur!). I'm guessing that the botanic gardens, and various research establishments have an ongoing general & scientific dialogue (plantalogue! :) ) with the owners/curators of the large private collections who are in a position to share spare/propagated plant specimens for study & botanic gardens enhancement.
You have to re-visit Gothenburg in a few years. They've started re-doing the greenhouses and expanding. Sadly that means they're now closed for the public eye, and Åsa told me most plants have been cut down and propagated for easy storage
Thank you so much! Really appreciate this trip down memory lane as I reminisce and marvel (again!) on those wonderful content like seeing Don Miller eps made me start my begonia love, thailand - those are so special and proud as I see my 2nd homeland being so wonderfully captured and Thailand is such a plant paradise! yes, remember gothenburg and thinking why didnt I pay a visit ... when I was living in Scandi!???!!!! what a shame! Look forward to more more memories and trips / tours/ contents - M grateful and thankful PS Singapore Garden by the Bay (which was 1 featured, recently started having plant fairs and spruce up for gift / plant shop so hopefully more such ideas will come along)
