I've definitely had an existential crisis when it comes to music, I'm still in it actually. It brought back my love of visual art and painting. Hopefully I can combine the two someday.😸💙

I love this. Artist was the first thing I ever said I wanted to be, and art has followed me through life. Now here I am, 64, having had to unexpectedly retire last year, picking it back up. I only just found my artistic voice through the pain of chronic migraine after deciding to do a visual migraine journal (initially having no idea what that would look like), starting last summer. Just created page 82, and it has grown. Will be my first show! And hi from western Mass!

My grandpa was nice enough to let me use his paints and fancy markers as a kid to scribble and color. I had one highschool art teacher who was tired and mean because i didn't excel using ink and quills. Im grateful that my family is overall supportive, its my own mind that can be paralyzing

That's so true, sometimes you're your own worst critic. It's wonderful your grandpa supported you from a young age though! Having that type of encouragement is so important :) - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

I love hearing about your art/life evolution! If I'm doing the math correctly, we must be about 15 years apart. I'm not the younger one. Talk about no internet...😉 My degree is in painting/arts admin from a small east coast liberal arts college. It's taken me many years to realize that the school was great but the art program at the time was horrible. Somehow the narrative in my head for so many years was that I just wasn't a 'real' artist, that the deficits were mine. So I worked in the business side of non-profit arts centers, raised kids, started a non-art family business with my partner and finally, 30+ years later, started making art again & launched a website/shop. My only regret, truly, is all my non-painting years - because I love making art. But here's my point now: what you are doing outside the parameters of old-school academia and the 'art world' is EPIC. No doubt you are affecting more art students than you can imagine, sharing your wisdom, encouragement, humor, common sense. Imagine how many of them you are saving from delaying art dreams for 30+ years? Thank you (and your fantastic team of teaching artists) for all of your hard work, resources and heart!

Really enjoyed your report. I guess we are in the same age. I decided to study graphic-design, because studying art in Germany was so strange, exclusive and all around define yourself as an extraordinary freak. I wanted to learn more skills and from nature - and still want this. Today I love doing my art mixed with graphic design as freelance illustrator. My earliest art influence was cubism and it's also still included in my art style. But the main process for me is still learning.

I also should say that I hated school, especially middle and high. If I hadn’t had art and encouraging teachers and family I don’t know what I would have done. Now that I teach high school (25 years) I get so sad some days because so many students and parents don’t care at all about art.

Oh my GAWD!! I totally remember those Ed Emberly books!!! I haven’t seen those in... *ahem* a couple years(we’re about the same age😜 )Thank you for that memory!!
My 5th grade teacher was the most supportive, positive influence in my youth, other than my parents (100%supportive of any thing creative!) Mr Howes was amazing, brilliant, and REAL!
My high school ceramics teacher was the otherAmazing influence in my adolescence. By the end of my sophomore year in high school I had absolute access to the ceramic slab, including firing the kiln by myself, and I took full of advantage of it! Mr. Emery turned me on to so many of the more abstract, unconventional masters. Without him I wouldn’t know half of What I do today! Those were my two major influences and people that definitely had an impact on the direction I went. My parents would be the other half and seriously, you couldn’t ask for a better support network! They were nothing but loving and encouraging and I’m truly blessed to have had them 🤘🖤🤘

Aah, encouraging teachers are the BEST! It's crazy how influential they are in a young artist's life, they can really make or break their will to create.
