  • In this webinar, Harvard psychiatrist and researcher Christopher M. Palmer, M.D., joins Mike Giardina for a discussion about the Brain Energy Theory. The Brain Energy Theory states that mental disorders are metabolic disorders. This is in conflict with some of the common theories of mental illness, such as the biopsychosocial model, the genetic model, and the chemical-imbalance theory. These current theories have some validity and offer some clues into the treatment of mental illness, but they do not paint the full picture.
Dr. Palmer’s Brain Energy Theory was born out of an experience helping a patient with schizophrenia lose weight. While following a ketogenic diet, not only did the patient lose weight, but his hallucinations and delusions also disappeared. Healthy mitochondria, Dr. Palmer concluded, are critical to both physical and mental health.
Mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouse of the cell. But these organelles, Dr. Palmer explains, are way more than just human batteries. They are critical in the production of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Mitochondria assist in the production and regulation of cortisol, estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone and are the primary regulators of gene expression. They also turn on and off inflammation and play a key role in metabolism and neurodevelopment. With this understanding, the relationship between physical and mental disorders becomes clearer.
Tune in as Dr. Palmer explains the Brain Energy Theory, the shortcomings of current psychiatric treatments for mental illness, and how CrossFit affiliates and coaches can get involved.

This is what CrossFit is all about! Dr. Palmer researched and put succinctly into words what we all suspected - a simple explanation for most of what ails our society! He clearly cares deeply for the health of his patients, please have him on again and at every conference. Glassman would be proud. 👏👏👏

Great information. I’m a Senior in my Masters of Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I’m looking to use Fitness and Nutrition as part of my treatment planning for clients. I have my L1 and have been CrossFit’ing since 2010. Will CrossFit be adding Mental Health to CrossFit Health at some point? I plan on attending various other seminars such as Weight Lifting and Gymnastics to better my ability to coach and work in the mental health field, but I’d really like to attend a mental health seminar in the future if that’s something in the works.

I started using the ketogenic diet over five years ago after trying every single medication for bipolar disorder. My daughter has epilepsy which is what caused me to find an interest in the diet. At the time, I didn't have very much support on it. I worked with an open minded doctor (which is by the way hard to find) and was able to go off all of my medications. The ketogenic diet is by far the best "medication" I have ever taken. I recently read Dr. Palmer's book and cried. Like where was the information all my life. I have a long family history of mental illness (bipolar, schizophrenia, borderline, autism) and this book validated my feelings, my beliefs and made me feel more confident in my own treatment of bipolar disorder. I meditate, exercise, and am very self disciplined with my sleep routines. It's very frustrating to know that a doctor could have told me go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time and your mood disorder will be significantly better --- instead they prescribe lithium which makes your hand shake constantly, they prescribe benzodiapines and meds that cause tartive dyskinia. And then when you complain about the side effects, they prescribe more meds to treat the side effects. Thank you for sharing this video and helping heal people.
P.S. I lift and use the ketogenic diet. You can get in excellent physical shape with the ketogenic diet. You have to time your carbs around your workout. You can still follow keto.

Hi! It is great you have recover from those diseases and great suffering (I am from Mexico, sorry about my English)
I have a depression and anxiety, and the medication rises my glucose so it is hard to get into ketosis. In the blood meter I get to 0.6
I can not remove my meds yet. Can you tell me how did you get it?
      I would really appreciate it!!!

@mariapalau-xm8nt start reading everything you can on the ketogenic diet. There is a ton of information on it now. I get into ketosis pretty easily by fasting but I have a fast metabolism to begin with. I always say work with your doctor but if you are not in ketosis you are probably eating too many carbs. It requires a lot of self discipline and it's a really strict diet.

      Thank you for telling
      But
You get into ketosis even with medications?

@@mariapalau-xm8nt Yes!!! You don't need medication or special anything. You just need to focus on eating meats, high fat, and vegetables and fruits that are low in carbs. You will have to research this because I cannot explain the entire diet in a comment. But, it's very doable and you can maintain it. I have been eating this way for five years +

So, I can get into ketosis even with that meds?

I wish I knew this 15 years ago before my mental health ruined my life. I am now on a carnivore diet and I feel like I have a new brain, but it is too late. 😢

Dr Palmer's presentation reminds me of another Chris. The latter set sail to discover India. When he landed, he said to himself: "Wow, this is not India. I discovered something bigger, a brand new continent." Our Dr. Palmer set sail to help a patient lose weight through keto. On his journey, he discovered a brand new continent, lose insanity. You are a great discoverer and ought to take your place side by side Christopher Columbus. You are helping me to salvage my grandson from the ravages of a common mental illness, between autism, OCT and separation anxiety. He will eat nothing but sugar and carbs. Fortunately, he is not quite 3. I hope CrossFit can integrate mental health in its goals, in addition to physical health.

It’s truly interesting listing to him speak about this on multiple forums. He’s really all the rage right now. I wonder though how Keto would affect an anhedonic (not depressed) just negative symtom based or residual schizophrenia based portion of people, traeting the disorganized and inability to plan symptoms, treating the Avolition, cognitive and ipseity issues. Wonder if Keto alone would fix this…
