I think Strava also lets you input how hard you thought the workout felt, and then you can choose to override HR date and it recalculates your training load based on that. Similar to you with the Apple, I find it under calculates training load on really long workouts like when I go do ultra distances lasting 6-8 hours and at the end my body is wrecked, but my training load may be less than if I did a 2 hour run with a 30 minute threshold hill effort, pushing into anaerobic a few times and 30 minute tempo flat effort. When I adjust the perceived effort of how the workout felt and override HR then it will bring these two training loads into better perspective. I wonder how this compares with Apple?
00:25 do do. I always like it when someone in UA-cam says do do
😏
What’s the inside joke here?? 😅😜
Hi Des. Thanks for the video. You talked about whether to account for duration on your effort rating or not, but you didn't really come to a conclusion. What should we do here? How should we rate a zone 2 five hour ride? It is both easy (effort) and hard (effort x time) at the same time!
Watching this as I download the Beta! ⌚️ I’m excited to give it a try.
Same I’m very exited to go for my run when I get off of work
Been playing around with these since Beta 1. Definitely agree! A cool first step, effort rating and factoring in your perceived exertion into load is awesome. But everything else and the way it actually practically affects your training still has a way to go but keen to see it get there
I think it's telling that Apple is not using HRV in its Vitals calculations, considering Whoop and others use it for a similar recovery metric. I found my Apple Watch regularly records "outlier" values for HRV almost every night (e.g. most values are under 50 but there will be one or two above 130). I wonder if this might be a reason?
Bout to download the beta right now to test this out. I got an ultra this weekend but my gen 6 won't live the whole time but we'll see what happens
One thing I forgot to mention in the video is that you should be able to go back in your workout history and assign an effort rating to previous workouts, which should have an affect on populating training load data. Have fun with it!
@@DesFit I'm excited to play with it. I've been using Athlytic to get "training readiness" as I had a coros and a whoop for a while but ended up liking my apple ecosystem. I'm excited to see how this stacks up
I'm usually never bothered with battery life anyway as its routine to charge it everynight other than when I have big pushes like this one coming up.
FYI it will take 28 days before it works as it tries to calculate a new baseline!
Thank you! Got it since developer Beta and everything is fine for me (espescially battery) on my Ultra 2
Just for your information, in the final minutes of this video there is some very high pitched microphone noise. It’s present when you at your desk.
Hmm, I didn't hear it after listening to it again but I appreciate the heads up either way 👍
@@DesFit hmmm, sorry about that, I did relisten before posting. I am using headphone so they may be more sensitive to it. Hey, if no one else comments, all good. Thanks for the great content.
No apologies needed! I always appreciate feedback like that. Thanks again!
Great video, thank you! :)
Thanks!
I look forward to when this comes out! My watch is still on 10.5.
How do you feel it compares to the garmin with OS 11?
Great review as always, Des. Do the training load features apply only to workouts recorded on the Apple Watch or does it calculate third-party workouts also, i.e., Strava, Wahoo, etc.?
Personally for me it’s only given me an effort score automatically for workouts that I started on the default Apple Watch workouts app. For workouts that I used a 3rd party app for I had to add the effort rating myself afterwards
Informative update! Thank you. I’ve been using the beta since launch and your impressions are similar to mine. Very foundational.
Still seems a bit behind others... was hoping the vitals and training load would be tangible and a little more useful. I think they need to better present the date in more meaningful ways
Hey!!!Nice video!!You think it’s time to replace the Athlytic app?
Got s9 and installed os11 and yes I ditched my forerunner
could you review the Galaxy watch ultra please.
Yup, coming up in a few days 👍
@@DesFit please test the HR sensor, last time I had Galaxy watch was not happy, is didn't always read HR during exercise. Thank you.
I always test the HR sensor, check out some of my other Samsung reviews!
I want so bad to switch Apple Watch U2 from Garmin (triathlete here), but holding out until Apple enables manual lap swimming with the action button! Maybe it will be a part WatchOS 11??
You installed iOS 18's beta on your phone as well? Brave man. 🙂
Have used all 3 beta’s so far on my main phone and watch and haven’t had an issue!
Garmin already let you choose theperceived exertion after a workout. And to be frank, I think they are doing a good job not to take that into account for the overall "work-load-calculation". Otherwise its getting hard to compare it.
Wonder why Apple doesn't give us "recovery time" after a workout? Other companies have already done this for a long time.
I’ve got a question, will the mapping feature only be available for the USA? Or worldwide? Thanks.
I know you can't know the future, but what are your thoughts about the ultra vs ultra 2 or waiting for the new apple watches? The Ultra one is on sale by a pretty significant amount and wanted an opinion of someone who is pretty involved in the smarwatch community
Will you test the Suunto Race S?
Been testing it for a few weeks and wrapping it up soon!
Anyone noticed that the pace average calculations in the new fitness app widgets aren’t correct? They seem to be averaging paces of workout intervals instead of giving the actual pace
Hat tip.
I looked at Apple Maps in Colorado and I don’t see trails. I looked for Capitol peak trail and it wouldn’t show. If it doesn’t show in Apple Maps, what’s the real use with hiking mountains when the trails aren’t even there?! I may get a Suunto race s for a hiking watch so I don’t have to spend $500+ on a Garmin.
wich watch band do you use on the apple watch?
Will the heart rate with Apple Watch connect to my Wahoo Elemnt Roam v2? I currently have to use the North Pole Engineering Heartbeatz device to communicate the heart rate from the watch to the Wahoo. It’s a pain to have to bring this device. Any reason the watch can’t connect to Wahoo and Garmin bike computers? I do not want to use my phone as a bike computer. Thanks!
can't wait to update and see battery life halved again
So is this appi all free?
Yes
Will you be reviewing the galaxy watch 7?
Yup, already in the works!
The question is, does the apple watch do it better than the Whoop band?
Depends on what you’re looking for, they’re providing different kinds of feedback.
Can I update the intensity of a workout manually if it's imported from Strava? I record my running and strength on apple watch but cycling I record on Hammerhead Karoo, which uploads it to Strava, which then uploads it to apple watch workouts (as a Strava workout)
I haven’t figured out a way to have the intensity imported into the workout app from a 3rd party apps. If you track a workout from Apples workout app, it will auto assign an effort. Hopefully this is changed because I don’t always want to assign an effort from Strava
The effort rating is always blank you have to rate it yourself every time
does the se version have all that?
I believe so
Test the galaxy watch ultra
Apple just need to hire someone from Garmin and call it a day.
Does this feature of training effort/load work with WorkOutdoors app? Since the app does sync to Apple workouts/fitness stuff - I figure it would work
It does but you have to manually go in to the native Fitness app and the workout that’s been imported from WorkOutDoors , and rate the workout. You won’t get promoted when you finish the workout, like in the native Workout app.
you need 4 more watches
I also like amzwatch replicas. People who don’t wear them like professionals can’t tell the difference. Their workmanship is really great luxuriatey
Battery life is crap compared to Garmin. I got an Ultra and I regret it
Ultra also does a lot of stuff Garmin can’t do, apples and oranges.
@@Phat-rj3joexactly
Thanks for information 😂
The ultra lasts 2 full days. Just charge it while you shower, it’s not a big deal
I’m a mountain biker and have tried an Apple Watch several times to track a ride and to train for races. My Garmin Watch plus ANT+ sensors blow the Apple Watch out of the water.
9 hrs 18 of sleep! Whats your secret?
Most boring ui
Just get a Garmin
Smart move
Not now after watchos11 ❤
Doesn’t satisfy the requirements of an actual smart watch. Apple Watch is good those of us who use an Apple Watch for day to day and like to also train
Enduro 2 is 45% off on Prime Day right now!
I have been wanting a F7x Pro for a while but just pulled the trigger on the Enduro 2 when I saw the deal and after watching his review where Des pretty much says the Enduro 2 is a 7x Pro but better… it wasn’t even on my radar the past year and now I bought it over my dream watch 🤣
First 🎉
It’s useless. I use it on beta and it doesn’t help at all. Weight lifting for example is only manual
Yup, weight training is outside the list of their workout types that automatically calculate an effort rating. Muscular strain is much harder to quantify than cardiovascular strain.
Why get a Garmin wannabe? Just get a Garmin.
God 😂
Simple, Because apple is the one fits all solution.🤷🏼♂️
Don’t want to carry around two Watches during the day..
Garmin ist just not good outside of sports usage.
@@andi2015 Just as Apple Watches are not very good outside of every day usage😉 And I’m speaking as a former long time AW owner.
Why moan about something you don’t want use? Stay with Garmin and be happy if that’s what you want. Some of us want Apple Watches for other reasons too.
