    Buying boxes and mystery packs isn’t sports card collecting. It’s gambling. If you’re actually a sports card collector then the best advice is to buy the sports cards you want. You don’t have to gamble to get them. Literally buy them.

    • @Sportscardhustlers
      @Sportscardhustlers  Місяць тому

      That’s one way to look at it as well

      @@Sportscardhustlers You're not helping new people in the hobby on how to collect. You're telling them they should gamble. That's not good advice. Someone is going to take your advice, spend too much money, get less than 40% back in ROI, and it's going to mostly be cards he/she isn't going to want to keep. Your advice doesn't help them, it hurts them. Cards are a visual commodity. You don't need to have it in hand to know if you want it. Sub to a social platform. See what's out there. See what you like and go after that. If you like ripping mystery packs and wax, go for it; it's a free country. Just don't call it collecting.

      @@WowColorFightAgreed with 90% of your message, but disagree that “collecting” isn’t occasionally buying a mystery pack and seeing what you get. Yes, I seek what cards I want and bid for them online. But once in a while it’s nice ripping a pack for the fun, and I still consider that “collecting” if you keep the cards and store them.
      Sometimes, we don’t know what “cards” we want. And some of the cards that we do want, is out of our price range. It’s nice going back to cards my grandfather purchased 70 years ago from packs and seeing some of the original base cards.
      Before the internet was a thing, the only way some people could collect cards was buying packs at their local stores.

    • @WowColorFight
      @WowColorFight Місяць тому

      @@scott8908 Similarly, I agree with 90% of what you're saying. Ripping packs has always been a form of gambling, but it's been enshrined as part of "collecting". Back in the day, your grandfather may have bought packs, but he also traded some of his cards with the other neighborhood kids. That's how kids, back then, got the cards they wanted.
      I'm just like everyone else, I buy boxes and packs from time to time (never bought a mystery pack), but I understand that there are times I do it for the experience and other times I do it for the chance to hit something big. How is that any different than going to Vegas and playing a slot or table game? It isn't different.
      When it comes to not knowing what you want, that's why I rec'd opening a social account and following people in the hobby. You'll get a sense of what you want. I don't know how you couldn't.
      Those cards that we want that are out of our price range? I argue that ripping a box or pack doesn't get you anywhere closer to getting them.
      Ultimately, I don't think we think too dissimilarly. If you've been in the hobby for a long time and you understand the risk-reward of it all, then do what you want. If you're new to the hobby, the worst thing you could do is just start ripping boxes and packs. For 99% of people who do this, they'll have less money and a bunch of cards they don't want without the means to get rid of them. Overall, they'll be left angry and out of the hobby.
      Anyone who proposes buying mystery packs to a new person in the hobby, IMO, has an financial incentive to do so. I couldn't think of a worse piece of advice.

    Best thing to do is figure out a player you want to collect and collect them. The root of the hobby isn’t gambling like it has been recently. So my advice to a younger me is buy guys i like. Don’t get caught up in the gambling.

    the problem with this whole sports card thing is now it has become too expensive for the casual collector...it's a rich person's game...buying those blaster boxes for $500 and up is like scratching an expensive lotto ticket...a lot of times, you'll end up with $50 worth of stuff for $500. it used to be "back in my day" you could ride your bike down to the local grocery store and buy a pack of cards for 25 cents and you'd never be disappointed with what you bought cuz you were only out of pocket 25 cents.

    I’d say the first thing you have to do before starting to collect cards is learning their value. You should be able to look at a card and have a good idea of what it’s worth. Once you can (accurately) estimate how much a cards worth, it will help you find deals, avoid overpriced cards, and you can grow a solid collection.
    You want to stretch your $$$ as much as you can if your new, which is why I’d avoid ripping wax and getting into mystery boxes. Rip wax and mystery boxes once you know what your getting yourself into

    Do what you want, rip what you want, everyone enjoys something different. I buy singles of the guys I collect, rip boxes for fun because I have been doing it since I was a kid, and don't touch Mystery packs...ever. People opening anything should know it's all gambling at the end of the day. If you are trying to get into "collecting" you should start small and buy singles online, at shows, or at your local LCS. Go to trade nights and any events that bring collectors and people from the hobby together. Build up your collection and buy exactly who you are going after, and don't spend money on retail or hobby boxes until you are ok with losing the $ you are putting in. Definitely stay away from mystery packs if you are new to the hobby. In all my 30+ years of collecting, I can tell you there are good and bad people in this hobby, and most (not all) the guys promoting these mystery packs are not who you want to be associating yourself with, especially not kids. I rip the boxes I do knowing there is a good chance there is nothing of value in them and most likely won't have any of the cards I am looking for, but I enjoy it and choose to do so. You make some really good points! I have just seen too many things over the years, maybe I am just getting old!

    Never buy pack (mystery or otherwise). I only target my PC guy (Mark McGwire) and high lifetime WAR rookie cards. You can spend $100 +++ on a box or put that money toward a no-doubter HOF player. Much better reward. Just my two cents worth.

    Delusional. If you're a true collector you don't care about increasing your odds. What you're doing is pumping the resell market. Repacks are the same as regular packs, it's gambling. Tell these young people to buy singles or lots of your favorite team and the best HOF players and current superstars. Stop pumping this crap. Stop telling kids to gamble smarter. It's sad.

    • @Sportscardhustlers
      @Sportscardhustlers  Місяць тому

      no one told them to gamble smarter. From experience we have bought mystery packs that guarentee certain types of cards and pay a fraction of the cost of a box with 90% base cards. Don't be delusional and buy blaster boxes

    It's odd. I bought a Topps Hobby box series II, thought twice about dropping $99 on it, ended up with the hobby box and two blaster series I. With the hobby box I got a bunch of rookies and serial # cards of unknown players, bummer. On one of the blaster boxes (to my surprise) I got a Father's Day Paul Goldschmidt Auto and overall better cards for $24. You just never know...I can only rip every once in awhile with these prices. The days of being able to walk up to any store and purchase any variety of football, baseball, or basketball boxes at retail price are long gone, well at least for football.

    After awhile of paying good money for breaks. I’ve recently changed my course. I started collecting on the cheap. Basically setting a limit of $12.99 shipped. So at the moment I’m set on local players who made it to the pro ranks. Since there not much from my area (Kauai,HI) it’s pretty easy. Collecting rc or any autos. With the limit isn’t to bad with a lot of research. Also I’ve started looking for graded cards. But graded at 4 or less. That hunt is not as easy as it seems. LOL but so fun

    Do your research for starters. Watch the guys who are analyzing pull rates and assessing what’s the best “bang for your buck.” If what you want to do is rip. Don’t chase big cards by endlessly ripping with your hard earned money. Take inventory of your collection and move what isn’t a long term hold for you to build capital for big singles. Buy proven players and rely on their legacies to enhance the value. Lastly if you’re not enjoying collecting take a break but don’t sell your stuff if later you fee you might regain interest. You’ll regret it, trust me!
