Actually i decided early the year for EEA Visa to circumvent all the formalities. After the announcement of the program change in early August i went for the upgrade to ESE. Mainly because i don't want to rely that the conditions stay the same. You never know. Now to a certain degree i regret the whole EEA ESE decision, because suddently the taxation rules will change. Learning out of all that, do not think too longterm and stay flexible.
True. I also was disappointed to know about the new tax rules regarding the deference being nullified. I emailed Thailand Privilege if Elite members are affected, they said they can’t be sure yet as it is still an ongoing decision. Hopefully, they exclude us from it. Otherwise, there is not much sense to get the Elite anymore.
I would urge you to message them with complaint. The more members voice out their dissatisfaction with this change, the higher probability they will rethink their decision. I always complain for any changes they make. 😂
Actually i will let it run. I got my 20 years membership under old conditions. First of all i won't exceed the 180 days per year. At the moment i bi-monthly commute between D & TH. Later in 2 years when i finally relocate i might spend half a year in a neighboured country, e. g. Malaysia where you can stay 90 days without a Visa.
Interested to know how long the process takes from application to approval? Appreciate you cant be pricise - every case will be different - but a guide would be appreciated. Assume all the paperwork has been completed correctly.
Hello. It’s usually 2 to 4 months starting from submitting all documents to the Thailand Privilege system until you receive the welcome letter and member card.
Mine took about two months in total.

If you don't mind I have two supplementary questions - 1) Does the 5 year period run from date of approval or date of entry and 2) is there a maximum period between approval and date of entry ie must you enter Thailand within a prescribed time?@@VilmaValiant
1. If I remember correctly, it starts from the date the Welcome Letter is issued. You cannot choose the exact date when the visa starts.
2. It’s totally up to you when you enter Thailand.
A better name is the "Buy a VISA" program. Thai Immigration subjects Non-O VISA holds to exceptional reporting and scrutiny. All the time RICH Expats are allowed to obtain a 5-year to 20-year VISA at a significant price!
Totally understand how expensive these visas could get.
All Thai Elite Visa holders also need to do 90-day reporting if they stay in the country for 90 consecutive days and 1-year extension for 1 year consecutive stay. But since they bought their visa for a high price, in turn, they aren’t subjected to any more of the hassles that the other visas require, like the retirement visa.
As for the retirement visas financial requirements, I believe it is for the Thai government to ensure that retirees can afford to sustain their life here. Apparently, some foreigners end up overstaying in Thailand, not being able to pay bills, and others can’t afford medical care. The financial requirements might differ in other countries, but they do also require them unfortunately, not just Thailand.
It is not cheap leaving in another country unless it is for employment purposes, sadly.

What’s the difference between the elite membership packages and the retirement visa?
The elite visas target a different market than retirement visas. But the main differences are the convenience of applying/renewing, age and financial funds requirements, and application fees.
Elite visas are much easier to apply for, as well as renew. There’s no need to prove how much money you have. You just need to pay the fixed membership fee and that’s it. They won’t ask for bank statements or proof of a large sum deposit in a Thai bank account, unlike the retirement visas. Anyone younger than 50 can apply for the elite visas.
People who value convenience for a fixed price (non-refundable) usually go for the Elite visas. Those who don’t want to pay for the hefty(and it is a lot more recently) price and are qualified for the retirement visa would rather just apply for it.
I personally opted for the Elite visa because I’m not 50 yet. A long term stay in Thailand wouldn’t have been possible for me without the elite visa.
So it really depends on the purpose of your stay, which visas do you qualify for, and how high your tolerance is when it comes to dealing with the Thai bureaucracy. 🤭

It’s the same price for each.
How long did your application process take form beginning to end?
Excluding the back and forth with Miss Joo, the Thai Elite visa agent, to answer all my questions and uncertainties, the visa processing (from them submitting my application to getting the approval letter) took less than 1 month.

The question is whether 600K THB members can extend another 15 years paying 400K THB. My guess is yes.
@tonythaiger93, yes, existing Elite Easy Access members will be able to upgrade to 20 years at 400k THB until 3 months before the end of their visa.
Correct me if I am wrong but is it not so that the old Elite visa you are exempt from Thailand taxes for money you being in from overseas & on the new Privilege visa you don’t get this exemption.
Hello. I think you are talking about the new proposed tax changes about taxing income brought into Thailand regardless of when it was earned. As far as I know, it’s not finalized yet. All that’s circulating right now are speculations. There is no final decision yet whether or not how Elite visa holders, old and new, will be affected. We will have to wait and see.
