Hitler just went somewhere, created an uprising in a tavern with the villagers. Killed the monarchy in the country, replaced it with the Empire and then when he was done, committed suicide.
Very irresponsible, Leaving the empire with no way of understanding or knowing what to do next. So they continued doing the same thing. Waging war against everyone else. Which basically leads them to be in a similar position to Rome. They need to constantly wage war or their economy suffers and dies. Coupled with the extreme xenophobia they have, basically conquered villages become concentration camps. Where they are not allowed any resource that would facilitate an uprising.
Elves are forbidden from going into the forest and using bow. Forced to farm. Something they are physically sub-par doing, compared to hunting. Dwarves are forced to make weapons and are underfeed, to prevent an uprising.
War is being waged against three different empires. Ironically, like Rome they are waging war against a highly commercial and merchant based empire. Who also have better navy. The other empire they are fighting is not mentioned.
Well the all the Ends are people who were screwed over by humans. i.e. Joan of Arc.
+Colby T so is there any chance will see Ceasar in the series. He was fucked quite hardly by humans aswell.
The idea of feudal Japanese warriors battling Nazis in a fantasy world is fucking gold and I'm especially intrigued by the fact that Hirano wrote it.

Fireguns against magic spells
Strategic geniuses like Scipius and Hannibal using magic and firearms in their strategy.
Planes fighting alongside griffins against Dragons.
Fantasy Versions of carrier battleships.
Dwarves making firearms.
Elves using old Japanese tactics.
People poisoning their arrows with shit and the water with it too.
Military geniuses having access to instant communication in the battlefield.
Armies feed by the ability of a single man, destroying the dependency of supply lines.
Insanity is ensured.
Dragons getting cancer.
Some of it is just insane.
Don't forget the Sacred-Band-style army of giant muscled half-naked musketeers.
And the fact it isnt Directed by Zack Snyder. *Vomit* Sucker Punch *Vomit*

As a history and culture nut, this anime just sounds f*cking awesome. I love the regular clashes like Samurais vs. Knights or something similar, but this takes the concept up to eleven. Kouta Hirano, you mad genius.

I actually remember my friend recommending this anime to me when I was scrolling through the anime section on Hulu. Long story short, I loved every moment of the anime. Especially since I loved Hellsing Ultimate

Actually, I think one of the drifters mentioned they were with Hitler during the whole time. Count Saint Germei. And it was 50 years ago, so I'm guessing Drifter's aren't affected by the flow of time?

Makes me sad, because that is literally the opposite of Jesus according to Christian faith. As a Christian myself, that's definitely going to drag the show down for me, although I won't know how much until it gets to that point.

I like how they don't have 'just' very famous historic people in this, but historic people who'd be interesting. Oda Nobunaga, Joan d'Arc and Gilles de Rais are the only ones I really know. If the 'good' guys are now bad and the 'bad' guys are now good, does this mean Gilles de Rais (who was a total bastard in later life) is the only good guy of the evil faction?

Similarity to F/SN is purely superficial. Drifters is more focused on medieval warfare with a little bit of politics than 1v1 fights, although they're still present to some degree.
True, it's likely the series isn't that similair to f/sn. But I didn't say that. I said the ideas of f/sn, by which I meant bringing differend historic figures together and have them fight. That idea is the same. How it's done however is very differend.

Well people argue Joan was dressed as a man because it was suggested by her protectors. To keep her safe. Considering it is used to counter the claims of the crime of cross-dressing. To make the accusation worthless even in its time.

It's probably worth mentioning when you discuss Drifters that, unlike most trapped in another works anime recently, the manga started in the same month as volume 1 of SAO, so it's not just another attempt for an author to cash in on the success SAO brought to the genre.

I remember this from way back when I watched Hellsing: The Dawn (or Ultimate maybe) and a PV for this was shown... I was never able to find it but then I saw that it's yet to be aired

I agree, it was okay. However, the anime has potential to be better because they can give life to the fighting scenes which in my opinion was the more interesting part of the manga series. That and the technological advancement the Drifters bring.
When I first saw an episode of this show it didn't quite click with me. I gave it another chance later and it has grown on me. A major reason is the Extra History videos you mentioned! I've been a fan of those for quite a while. Because of them I feel more connected to the show because I can often recognize what Nobunaga and Hannibal and Scipio are talking about when they bring up things that happened in their pasts.
Of course some of the other reasons include the fighter plane vs the dragons, Joan of Arc as a pyromaniac super-powered VILLAIN and that THEME SONG! OMG is that intro amazing!
The fact that history's 'villains' are the heroes, while the heroes are the 'villains'. Makes sense: it is about how you are awarded. Villains were jerks, and yet they get a second chance despite the fact that they got themselves often righteously killed. But the heroes were subjected to unjust deaths (martyred) and then ripped from all they knew and loved just to face another world just as bad or worse than the one they left. For the villains, this is a blast...for the heroes, it is soul crushing.

I can't wait for this to start! I watched the OVA a while ago and was hooked. The fact that it's written by the same guy who did hellsing is a huge plus. Hellsing ultimate was amazing and I still rewatch it every now and then.
Rasputin was always a villain, so his role is not exactly reversed
Except this version is not a cackling monster. He's a serene, contemplative mystic, who serves mostly as the communicator between the Black King (who is probably Jesus) and the other Ends (who are all people who were brutally betrayed in life).
Rasputin has been a villain in fiction. In real life he was a good guy, and trusted by the crown. Not sure why people give him bad rep.

watched the 2 episodes that are already out for Drifters last night. As a history buff I can't wait to see more on how the story plays and see more characters. So far, I'm hooked on the show

It might be because this is the only interesting anime airing this season, barring leftovers and sequels. And the fact that it's based on Hirano's work makes it even more interesting.

I watched the first two episodes of this last week. First thing that stood out to me was the animation style, really loved it. The show looks like it has a lot of potential, but I'm curious to see how the producers follow through with the awesome premise that they're set up. (Also curious to hear your thoughts on the show +Mother's Basement )

The Soundtrack of that PV was .... caustic is the only word i could describe it with. In general way to hectic, but hopefully the show will have a calmer style and all the historical mish mash seems interesting enough.
what's interesting is the only skills the drifters have are ones they had before their death/anything that was associated with them, such as a pilot and his plane, or cowboys and their guns. The ENDS however are different in that they're the only drifters to have full on super powers, making them very distinct from the other drifters and bringing up questions of why they're so different beyond ideology.

as soon as I saw some of the characters from this show (in an amv) I instantly knew it was the work of kota hirano. (not sure if I spelled that write)
When I saw the animation for the series I instantly thought it was madhouse because the art style looks very similar to Hellsing Ultimate

I really hope this gets 24 episodes. The little I know about this series is that it has a MASSIVE cast and tons of organizations with different goals. Seems like not much important would happen in 12 episodes, and even if important stuff did happen, we wouldn't get any resolution to an arc

No way Drifters finally got its own series after YEARSSSS of dick teasing, maybe ill finally be inclined to give the series a shot because the manga's art style is kinda off putting to me.
the art style isn't that different in the anime (or between hellsing for that matter) but i will agree kouta's artwork can be REALLY chaotic and ahrd to follow sometimes.

it's pretty good. It definitely has a different tone than hellsing but has the same love of violence.
I knew it reminded me of Hellsing! Same music too!
watched the OVA, it has a lot more comedic moment than I thought it would.
Read the manga! Then watch the anime! If you enjoyed Hellsing, then there is a good chance you will like this one too. It is very much Hirano's work, and upon doing some fact checking, he has really done his homework on history. It has a good balance of action and comedy.
It is really one of my favorite series.
Btw, you did a wonderful job of analyzing this PV. And I am not just saying that because you said nice things about a series I enjoy. I just discovered your videos today and I appreciate your balance of emotion and objectivity in how you analyze things. You show that you care about what you talk about, but that you also do your homework and have real, legitimate praise and complaints for what you are talking about.
