TIME STAMPS: 3:10 -- Tony reflects on coming up, the youngest of 3 boys and not realizing he had comedic chops until he was fully grown. They go on to discuss Tony and Talib's shared love of cold cereal, the three most popular cereals of all-time, which reigns supreme in their eyes, and serial killers eating plain Cheerios. They also get into Tony's take on schools having poor meal management, serving foods that don't match as well as growing up with government cheese. 12:44 -- Tony is asked about his late start in the comedy scene, beginning in 2008, and why he thinks comedians get better with age. They explore his journey coming into the game with a life of experiences to draw material from and how he has stayed grinding ever since. They go on to discuss ageism in the hip hop world, Jay-Z's verse on 'God Did', if rappers will still be touring in their late 70's like the Rolling Stones, and gangster rappers turning conscious after 40. 24:58 -- Tony speaks on why he always wanted a crew coming up like the one he has been doing shows with for years and how it can trace back to his love for squads like the X-Men and Ninja Turtles. They go on to discuss his originally migrating from his hometown of Chicago to LA in hopes of becoming an actor, Tony using stand up as a means to get more exposure, and all the award-winning actors that started out as comedians. 34:20 -- Jas thanks Tony for the guidance he gave her when she was just starting out and asks him why it's important to give advice to young comics, as well as why he thinks so many don't do the same. They go on to discuss the pros and cons of 'bringer shows' as well as the pay for play shows put on by promoters who don't always respect the art form. They also get into Tony's take on online comedy versus in person comedy and the time he figured out how important social media would be to success. 46:26 -- Tony talks about his love and genuine interest in animals, being surrounded by all sorts of pets growing up, including dogs, cats, birds, snakes and more. They discuss Tony's viral 'Cram Ram' videos, where he came up with the sound effects, his use of callback humor and how so much of his online comedy requires context. Tony also speaks on Ghostface Killah loading his DMs with animal videos, the love/hate relationship with social media's community guidelines, and how Talib found out he can't call people trash online. 53:54 -- Tony and Jas debate on if cats are creepy, Jas states her love for ratchet women, and they discuss how little dogs work on Tony's nerves, Tony's take on the conversations that dogs have with each other, and if cat fleas or dog fleas are more gangster. They go on to talk about Tony's review of the Robert Paterson Batman being more of a "Batguy", Tony's dream of doing voice work for a company like Pixar, and how great the D.C. animation releases have been. They also get into the unevenness of D.C. superheroes and the idea of a corrupt Superman. 1:06:18 -- Talib and Tony trade their childhood memories of the original Transformers animated film from 1986. They discuss their fascination of hearing cursing in a cartoon for the first time, and Tony being devastated over the demise of Optimus Prime, holding back tears at the time. They also discuss Tony's long-time love of hip hop as they explore the Black Star debut, the song 'Respiration', listening to Kweli and Hi-Tek's 'The Blast' on repeat, as well as De La Soul still going strong with no history of beefing. 1:18:24 -- Tony is asked about his public mourning of his 21-year-old son who passed away just last year, when he was hit by a car that was street racing. Tony reflects on finding that performing comedy was like therapy and how it became the outlet he needed to process everything. He talks about wondering before the event how other parents were able to function after losing a child and gives advice to people about how to help others mourn the loss of their loved ones. Tony also speaks on finding out his father is still alive through ancestry research. 1:27:42 -- Tony talks about his love of game nights, how to play Monopoly like a slumlord, and his statement of, "People always say grow some balls for toughness but vaginas are waaay tougher". They go on to discuss Talib's favorite album from his own discography, how Black Star's 'No Fear of Time' came together, and Tony's take on Yasiin Bey being the most dynamic rapper/actor in the game. They also discuss Tony's 'For The Queen' bit about bees putting their lives on the line, and Tony's phobia of flies landing on his penis.
Speaking of game nights: the original game of Monopoly was created by Lizzie Magie who said the game she invented in 1904 was _“a practical demonstration of the present system of land-grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences.”_ It was intended as a warning. But the original game was changed drastically (after she had sold the rights) to not trigger the capitalists (they bruise easily).
I love @TonyBakercomedy and his tribe. His son passed the day before my birthday and that was one of the hardest birthdays I've had to experience. I lost my Mom in October 2022 to lung cancer and Tony Baker's grieving process has helped guide me and comfort me. This podcast episode was epic and so important to me. Thank y'all for this.
I feel you on this. He’s such a genuine, funny person who feels like a best friend in my own head in a way. When his son passed, I was messed up. But he really been giving a clinical on how to deal with and support those in grief. I lost my mom also in 2006 to a rare adrenal cancer. A lot of people did not know how to support but I had quite a few who did. BTW: We almost have the same name! 😂❤
I enjoyed this interview so much!! He gave us the blueprint on how to deal with grief. He just helped so many by explaining what to do at a time when you don't know what to say.
Talib Kweli AND Tony Baker 🍞 for almost 2 HOURS?!? WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE SUCH A GIFT 🎁 at the end of a LOOOOOOOOONG & EXHAUSTING MONDAY?!!! 🙌🏾🙏🏾🙌🏾 THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!
Toney is an unspoken king of comedy. In the next 3yrs I wouldn’t be surprised to see him skyrocket into that millionaire stratosphere. He can do everything. A true superstar.
Well daaaaaamn! This was a pleasant surprise! Tony Baker is one of my favorite comedians on the scene today. This was amazing, Talib and crew. 💯👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Legendary interview, and honestly it's good to see Tony doing so well. I remember crying with him when he did one of his first walks on the phone. I can't imagine losing children, as a parent myself. Especially when you could see even in other people's lives. When he was on Zoomin With the Homies, shout out Tahir Moore, Tony would be chillin with his kids. They'd be into what he was doing, and equally the other way. A model father. So to go through a loss with him made me take a step back and appreciate my own children even more. Again, shout out. Never, can their be enough praise for Tony.
I totally agree. The snobbery that Hollywood displays towards online creators who are genuinely talented is so perplexing. I think some of that is changing.
@@aic0809 I think it's changing, too. I just don't want Hollywood to pick the minstrel acts like Kountry Wayne instead of people like Tony and Teddy Ray (RIP).
This is so cool. Get your fandom off Tony. How crazy is this. He just as big a fan of you. Two grandmasters of their trade. Hip Hop & comedy...we made it. We here.
This was the interview I needed! Just guys hanging out talking all the same things that I'm into from comedy, hip hop music, comics, Transformers/G.I.JOE... Loved this! Great talk and some good laughs. Phenomenal work!
I don't know Tony Baker other than what I see on camera... but you can tell he is a really cool and down to earth guy... someone you would definitely want to be friends with.... and I don't know why people sleeping on Bowfinger... that was a funny ass movie for real
Props this was a stellar episode. Talib, you are always at your best and one of the best. What a great time with Tony. And for the top cereals, those top two are DEFINITELY parents buying for kids. CTC is the top choice of people buying for themselves. And that T La Rock story is crazy! And that its such an unheard story! Like his hit Its Yours sounds a LOT like the inspiration behind Nas' World Is Yours sample...... Altogether this is a wonderfully fulfilling episode. Thanks.
I realize that I am conditioned to automatically laugh at the sound of Tony Baker’s voice. I think it’s from watching hours of cram and skipidy pap animal videos!😂 #voiceoverking
I am so thankful this landed in front of me. I've watched Tony Baker in his specials and animal v o and mentally connected with his humor, heart and hemoglobin. But your interview really taught me about all of you. I hope Tony makes it to Las Vegas, my town, because I'll be bringing all the white old ladies. Thank you for every minute of this video. Many blessings to all of you and all those you love.
