  • Hi! I'm Kelly, an American mom living in Denmark. Today, I try Danish "lakrids" or black licorice candy. These Danish treats were recommended to me by my followers, since they are the "best black licorice in Denmark", or so I have been told. See how this American reacts to trying Danish candy. This is a Danish candy taste test that I will never forget.

I think starting off with sweeter licorice is the way to go so you can become accustomed to the taste.
Haribo makes lots of good sweet licorice like the ones in Matador Dark Mix, ABC Lakrids, Lakrids Sutter and Mega Roulette.
Sweet Finnish licorice is also really good. There is also Poletter by Toms that i really enjoy, its kinda refreshing like mint or eucalyptus
Also want to mention that usually when licorice is covered by a really strong powder or salt/sugar the licorice underneath tastes nowhere near as strong as you'd expect.
At the end of the day you don't have to like it, i think its really cool that you at least tried :D

If you get a stomach ache from the salmiak, just drink milk, it'll soothe you right away. Tyrkisk peber is my favourite. But biting into it was probably not the best for a beginner to do ;)

  • @MrMartinSchou
    @MrMartinSchou 3 роки тому +3

With the Tyrkisk Peber I think the mistake was biting into it, because then you end up with the entire dose at once.
If you suck it like a lossinge, your saliva will eventually open a small hole in it and it will slowly release a small dosage of it, and over time it will increase in intensity, but that will be a slow gradual ramp-up rather than a massive shock to your mouth.

Why are people always telling people, who aren’t used to it, to go for the tough stuff? Kids don’t start out with salmiak and the strong ones - they go for the Amager-stang from Pingvin, Flagermus from Haribo and Finsk lakridsstang (the fat not salty one) which is a sweeter and softer and just nice.
Please Denmark - if you lile others to like it, don’t give them the bad stuff that not all danes eat anyway!

You could try licorice in other forms tho icecream, flødeboller, cake, lakriskonfekt, tea, alcohol a.s.o. there is a big variety of stuff and dosent all have a strong licorice taste.
    - "bats, dracula, witches its not like warm and fuzzy things" - no nether is licorice 😀

Do you like "koldskål" super delicius on a hot summer day(to a danish person) can be eaten different thing fruits, berries, cornflakes, icecream and ofc "kammerjunkere" i wonder why its not more popular out in the world, does it just taste horrible if your not use to it from childhood?

Salmiak salt is often found in pee... Of course, what they put in the candies are artificially made.
So no reason to fear it.
My Chinese wife never really had trouble with liquorice, it's not that far from liquorice root, but the little Finnish touch of salmiak kinda throws her off.
Anyway, Fazer, if you're reading this, bring the salty caramel candy bars to DK... tried it on a finnair flight, but we can't all afford to go to China every month.
Edit: it's actually impressive how tolerant Americans often are to chili but how strong most react to salmiak. I mean, I'd be crying from pain after a ghost pepper, but tyrkisk peber hurts no one.

Super-Piratos are really great, if you have a sore throat - there are also the slightly milder and smaller standard Piratos.
Vejskilte (road-signs), Salt-muslinger, Amager-kiks and Blue Jeans are other classics. 😉
The "salt" part isn't your normal kitchen salt ( NaCl - Potasium Chloride), but another type of salt called Ammonium Chloride ( NH4Cl ) instead - aka. Salmiac.

Ha ha ... I promise you that I am really not a sadist, but this was so funny. All those black liquorice / ammonium chloride (salmiak) products are what one would call an acquired taste 😁.
The reason for the taste is that Danish liquorice is actually made (was made) with the extract from the plant called liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). So when e.g. Americans say that those red long things are liquorice, to a Dane that's just all kinds of wrong. But that's the thing with words - They can loose their original meaning over time.

    Dear Kelly.
You are on the right way. But maybe you should try some of the sweet liquorice from Haribo, like skipper skrå or dukatos. Actually some of the chocolate coated could be even worse than tyrkisk Peber. So you have to read the labels. The different liquorice is made very much like chillies - some are eatable and some are not. Also when it’s a hard Bon Bon it’s meant to be put hole in your mouth and sucked on until it melts away. There by releasing the tast little by little. On you shouldn’t try is fisherman’s friend that’s actually for clearing you throat when you have a cold.
Next time you are shopping take a look at the counter, there are usually small bokses with liquorice tablets from Gajol or läkarol with lots of different flavours maybe you should try on of those start with some of those marked sweet liquorice and you will eventually learn to like it like when you learned to drink alcoholic beverages.

Well, congratulation on you for at least try licorice. It´s well known we like our licorice, sweet or salty here in the nordic countries. Here in Sweden, we have Djungelvrål and Svenskdjävlar, eating them is strongly not advisable if you have a weak stomach or don´t like salmiak, the title says it all, But we do have good salty and sweet licorice, like Almegården´s licorice. The best licorice is Aroma´s Gott & Blandat lakritsmix. Not too sweet not too salty to my taste. Try that.
In the '90s it was very popular making Turkish peppar shot´s. it was basically vodka and Turkish pebber in them. I liked them. I had hoped you should try that too.
You do know the history of the licorice root. It was considered a medicine, it is still a part of some medicines for prevent cough. The root could only be bought at pharmacies. But since 100 years ago it was sold as candy. And from the looks I have seen on youtube there are many non Scandinavians who think it should have stayed in the pharmacies.
