We generally have a much more relaxed relationship to our bodies and sexuality than Americans, or most of the world really. So having the whole world freak out about John Dillermand was hilarious to me and everyone I've talked to.

Thanks for a great video. Always funny to see our culture through your eyes.
Being the father of two girls who both loved Onkel Reje, I'd like to try to explain (what I think is) the point of the show:
Every time Onkel Reje is confronted with a question of moral nature, he goes the inappropriate direction - and beyond. The 'and beyond' is the important part. You see, he always takes it so far that the kids understand how inappropriate he is, thus placing the kids on the 'right' part of morality.
Most kid's shows always try to display the decent/sensitive path, which has the effect that a child with playful instincts end up identifying themselves as the naughty one compared to what they see.
This never happens when they watch Reje. With him they always end up as the sensitive one. And I think it is a great thing that the show reminds kids that they also have moral - and actually trains them in exercising their morality.

But kids connected with him because kids themselves are selfish beings as well. He was very much on their level so to say. I never saw him as a role model, he (and the show) was just entertainment and a way to learn language and basic stuff. Some of the other characters like Aske and Luna would also "parent" him sometimes amd put him in his place if he was over the line, just like kids md their parents would do.

All the "inapropriate" shows, are all there to balance it all. Like someone have to give that thing to the children, in order for them to be able to put all things in perspective. So Dillermand and Reje are a good thing, because they teach children not to get upset when they reach adulthood.

You should see the classic “Bennys Badekar”. It will teach you a lot about how Danes view each other. I love Onkel Reje. He is a rebel. He sets the bad example, and he is so extreme that kids understand that he is not a role model, but the opposite of that. Noone would ever like to behave like Onkel Reje. I think the lesson of that show is the goal doesn’t justify the means. He often has good intentions, but he ends up doing a lot of bad things because he doesn’t think before he acts and is generally very inconsiderate. But he is deep down a goid person, so kids also learn that you are not a bad person because you sometimes happen to do bad or wrong things.

I'd recommend the show called "Nana" - a childrens show from 1988 with 6 episodes. It's a great way to see how a danish school works and how it's like to be a child/ up in Denmark- you can find it on Bonanza. Hi 🙂
I live In Denmark 🇩🇰 but as a young boy I moved to Vancouver Island, Canada 🍁 in the early 1980 with my mother and two brothers, in Canada we had numerous channels two watch with Saturday morning cartoons for hours, with The Flintstones, He-man, Transformers and so on.
In Denmark before 1989 I think, there was a monopoly on TV so we only had one Danish channel and Two Swedish and if you lived in the southern part you could get German channels. So I had never seen those shows before and my brothers and me were ecstatic and it was the coolest thing ever.
But like all good things, it came to an end and we moved back to Denmark 🇩🇰 and the mega boring TV 😂
But in some odd way it was fun because when we told in school what sort of shows we saw in Canada 🍁 most couldn't believe what they were hearing, and when we told about commercial break in shows, that was often wierd for them to hear and made no sense 🙂
I have seen numerous of your videos and by other Americans 🇺🇸 or Canadians 🇨🇦 experiencing Denmark and/or Danish culture, because of my ties to Canada 🍁
It is both funny and interesting, because I see it both ways with equal understanding in regards to humor, society differences etc.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings about living in Denmark 🇩🇰 take care and all the best. Kris

Oh jeez, blast from the past, all my favourite kids tv shows. I remember watching Rosa fra Ruladegade with WiFi so slow it would take a minute just to load an episode in 144p.
It was also mostly danish tv shows that aired on Ramasjang in like 2012, where as now there are a lot of different tv shows from around the world, there was also this summer break exclusive show that came on around 8 in the morning so that the parents could sleep till 10 when it finished, it was called Sommer Somarum or something along those lines (I don’t actually know how to spell it) but I remember sneaking down stairs with my older sister to go watch it while our mom and dad were still sleeping, I don’t think they make it anymore though.

There's also two elder Danish kids shows, which I absolutely love (I'm 18 now, but I grew up with these two - I don't know if they still occasionally show them at Ramasjang). The first one is called Bamse & Kylling (translation: Bear & Chicken) and it's people dressed up as a bear and a chicken in a real world. The bear, Bamse, lives in a house and can be quite arrogant and/or spoiled at some times, but still very lovable. He has a friend called Chicken, who can't talk and only speaks gibberish. There's also the character Duckling (who always carries a binky) and two humans called Aske and Luna! The other children's show is called Kaj & Andrea. It's similar to Bamse & Kylling, only it's puppets held by people. Kaj & Andrea is about a frog (Kaj is the frog) and a parrot (Andrea is the parrot), and there's also a man sometimes (called Ole) who usually acts as a guide and helps them get along (he's also sometimes singing and playing guitar)

I think it's just the way things evolve. When I grew up in the 60's we had one TV channel, and because we lived in Copenhagen, we could get two Swedish channels on a good day.
Back in those days, kid's shows were mostly educational/moral stories, how to behave, what consequences when you misbehaved and such. Of course, in December there would always be Julekalenderen - new storyline every year - but mostly we were left to our own imagination.

Danish children’s television has a long standing tradition of having characters that are unreasonable by design. Take Bamse. He is a kindergartener sometimes he’s a loving friend but most of the time he want to decide everything and poor Kylling has to play along. Kids are meant to see that he is unfair and unreasonable and then not be like him.

I think the reason Danish childrens' tv can seem both progressive AND offensive to a lot of non-Danish people is simply because the focus is different. It's often about teaching AND being entertaining, and it's not made to be appropriate to adults, but to satisfy children's curiosity on their own terms. This is also why it's abovious which age group the show is made for, and why not all main characters are "good". There's often children in the shows, because it's made for them.
With Hr. Skæg (which both means beard and fun (welcome to Danish humour, it's bad)) the focus is on teaching smaller children about things like the alphabet. The episodes are similar, but different enough to keep 3-6 year olds entertained.
As a metalfan I know, that Onkel Reje has become an idol to a lot of little metalheads (and their parents), where he sings about children's "issues" like not wanting to shower. He doesn't have to be perfect, but he's relatable, and that's the important part.
The relatable part is also why a show like John Dillermand exists. Like you say: it's a huge part of your sons' lives, so of course someone makes a show about a character, who's name is a childish word for a penis.
Also, Danish girls know what a naked boy looks like and vice versa. Our tradition for non-sexual nudity is rather long, and it's almost seen as disturbing if you are bothered by children not wearing clothes. Like the Danish comedian Anders Matthesen said: "The only thing that should pass through your mind is: I wonder if she would like a piece of cake".
Singing is traditionally a BIIIIG thing in Danish children's shows. Some of the songs get stuck in your head forever. You have been warned:

Reading this made me think of all the kids shows I’ve watched (both danish and not) and it really made me realise that kids shows around the world, like the US as an example, are more focused on flashy fights, a good story or comedy, where as danish kids shows basically taught me how to be a person (though I might be biased), of course world building is important when telling a story, but a 10 year old child isn’t gonna care or even notice if two events don’t match up or if the story/logic just got thrown out the window, children’s stories usually have a moral, like the kid who cried wolf, but in my experience in a lot of kids shows you need to big deep if you want to know what the moral of the story was, and that’s if there even was one to begin with, where as danish kids shows give you a question and then teaches you about said question, or it’s like “How to be nice to people (for dummies)” and then tells you to go spend time with the family, but in a nice way (again I might be biased with this though).

I think the difference between danish children tv and US are that we make tv where the child is beeing taken seriously, we give them credit for beeing able to make up their own mind about what the show is about. We enlighten, speak to the childs inquisitive mind and we dont moralize. We dont say: " my viewpoint is better as an adult than yours as an child" we handle grown up subjects, but on the premise of the child. Onkel Reje is maybe not for everybody. I personally love him. He is performed by Mads Geertsen a former heavyrock musian and clown/circus performer from Århus. (He actually got a third place in DM in Rock in 1993 with his band Impotators, the year Dizzy Mizz Lizzy won and Kashmir came second.) Onkel Reje is very political incorrect, and has no impulse controll. He acts more like a child than an adult. He loves to get into trouble or get other into trouble. If he thinks something seems funny, he will do it no matter how crazy it is. I think children, as another watcher pointed out, is quite capable of figuring out that Onkel Reje is not a role model, cause he does sometime do some scary thing, but more an examble of what not to do. But he takes children seriously and teaches them not to take everything so serious and its ok to be different or goofy.

We have another good old childrens show called “Max Pinlig”. It means “ Max, who is embarrassed”. It’s about a boy, who lives with his single mom and he thinks she is really embarrassing (like many teenagers do). This show is actually quite hilarious and both kids and parents can relate to the characters. It can teach children to be a little more understanding towards other people, and to realise, that there is often two sides to any situation and then maby laugh a little, both at their parents and themselves.

  • @carstenfrandsen
    @carstenfrandsen 3 роки тому +2

You have to consider that children are NOT focusing on their bodies, relationships and so on. They are laughing!!! They stop laughing when "us" adults try to explain the show to them.
Next time ask your kids what they think about it.
I feel that "us" adults actually do not understand the deeper meaning of the "TV made for kids, and by media people".
I do not have kids. But I know that girls and boys do perceive what they see differently. I personally (with all what is available on the net, tv, stream) think that they should be guided thru the jungle (they will keep something secret!!!!) ... but it is big world, many cultures and they have to make their own decision growing up. Let us all guide them with an open mind and tell them that you love them no matter what.
