- This a slide show of our 10 day canoe trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We started at the Little Indian Sioux entry point and did a 40 mile loop with 27 portages. It was a great trip... we saw lots of beautiful country and had some very nice sunsets and rainbows!
Few do the BWCA and lake country the Justice you do with your photos and music. It was my home and church in paradise. I had owned 22 acres on a lake a short drive west of Ely, only to loose it through illness and divorce. Still all these years later , my heart remains there, and the hope that one day I will return, ever to leave again. Thank you for bringing its splendor to these old eyes.
Thanks Richard for the very nice comment, I'm also hooked on the Northwoods! After 40 trips up there, I am still drawn to it and will continue to go as long as God gives me the strength/ health to do it :-)
One of the nicest videos l've seen which captures the essence of the BWCAW. Great photography and wonderful music. I'm 73 years old and have done well over 100 BWCA trips (5 this year). I have passed through all those lakes on one trip or another. Brings back fond memories of times past. Thanks for posting...

Very Nice, I had the pleasure of going to Camp Isabella (ELC) through school as a kid back in the late 80s. I now live in North Carolina and miss that clear water, camping, and JUST DOING THAT! Really cool THANK YOU...

Thanks for sharing! We took our 8 year old out to do nearly the same route this summer (sans Gun Lake, and we opted to loop in a counter-clockwise direction). We even stayed in many of the same campsites. Watching this is bringing back so many good memories. But of course our pictures do not capture the spirit of this area as yours do. Your photos really capture the loveliness of of it all. I will watch this video over and over again. Don't stop making BWCA videos! Love it!

Absolutely breathtaking. I can't wait for my trip off the Gunflint on Clearwater. Never tripped on the Ely side but this is the area I've been looking at. Thanks for the awesome perspective!
Thanks Mike - The Gunflint side is great too, our last several trips were taken up that way. On the Ely side, the Mudro Enty and doing the loop through Horse River, Basswood River, Crooked, Friday Bay, Gun, Fourtown is also a great route... lots to see.
What a great video, front row seats!! I had spent some time in the area and even passed through Ely once several years back but never had the opportunity to do the Boundary Waters. Your trip makes me ache to return for this purpose! Thank you for taking the time to put this together so that we may enjoy it too!!

Thanks Larry, it was a great trip! It was fun to experience some different things compared to our normal Fall trip... well, maybe not the black flies :-)
Were the flies biting or just swarming? Earlier in May, I was on a portage clearing crew in the LIS area (the SW portion of your loop) and the flies were swarming but we had very few bites. Worst part was when they flew into our mouths. Later in May, I was in another part of the BW (Wood Lake) and hardly had any bug problems at all. They were around but not even flying around me.
The black flies were both swarming and biting... eating was tough since we had to take down the headnets. I did discover I could drink water right through the headnet, so that helped.
I definitely have a new appreciation for portage clearing crews, with the small taste of portage clearing that we received!

I have gone out of Entry #14 on a couple trips. I have many good memories of that area. Your video is wonderful. Thanks so much. Also, to anyone reading this, I lost a good Benchmade knife at the bottom of the Devil's Cascade portage. Keep an eye out. I don't want it back, but would love to know someone else is enjoying it. Again, I loved the video.

I love watching your videos. I just got back from my trip a little over a week ago.....22 years was too long to wait; I can't wait until next year to take on my first solo trip. I'm definitely looking at this area to do my 5 day trip in early June next year- though I have to say Fall in the BWCA is my new favorite time of year to be there. I may wait until the latter half of September to go next year on another trip.
Thanks StormLaker! Fall is our favorite time too, but the weather is really unpredictable.. This year we went the first week of October... quite a bit of rain and wind the first half of the week, but we hit the fall colors at the peak. Good luck with the solo trip!
This is absolutely breathtaking. It makes me jealous wanting to pack up my things and head north to the Boundary Waters. We just got a new barrel this year and can't wait to try it out next season. YOu scenic photography is outstanding. Thank you.

We went into Homer Lake September 9, 2016 for 5 nights 6 days. We traveled from Homer, to Vern then Juno north to Brule. It was beyond explanation. The Boundary Waters is a sensational world of beauty.

Thanks for taking me along. I have been on part of this route. l took my partner on this for her first tfip and she loved it! weve returned several times since. Although beaufiful but not like your photos. I love this format and Jerry's music is perfect. Out of curiosity, does this route in reverse like Mama's Basecamp become a little easier around Steep Lake and the others there? Tanks again. Now I have go watch it again. Steve Shapiro
I forgot to mention I'll be 77 for my next trip. Arthritis is rearing it's head so our route may be easier this year. In addition to the trips, we've made friends wuth a few local folks which only enhances our experience.
@@openboat42 Wow, 77 you are an inspiration to the rest of us wondering how long we will be able to do this! I can appreciate the arthritis problems... I am 64 and have it starting in the fingers and it can be troublesome.
As for your question of reversing the route... I think it is pretty much a wash, except for the 120 rod from Steep to South. There would be a definite advantage of reversing our route... it was a long uphill stretch for us. As I look more at the map, there may also be an advantage of reversing our route when going from Slim to Little Loon.
I considered this a challenging route so if you complete it, my hat is off to you! Best of luck... let us know how your trip goes.
It's ridicoulous how good your photos are. RIDICULOUS!!! Any advice for an amateur photographer?? I do solo's in the BWCA once a year. Would love to be able to capture some shots like yours

Hey there truly inspiring video Gary! We just visited the North Shore for the first time last week and were captured by the rugged natural beauty of the Arrow Head region. We hail from North West Michigan and are accustom to the UP but the North Shore just seems so much bigger and wilder. I was wondering what you packed camera outfit in wile on this trip, I was thinking about using my pelican 1560 for my Mamiya 7ii for the sake of it being water tight. One draw back is that the pelican is heavy and I'm sure weight counts on a trip like this. Thanks for the inspiration!!!
Thanks Jason! I pack my camera system in an F-Stop Gear Ajna pack. It is a backpack style that also serves as a daypack, containing my snacks, first aid kit, water, etc. It is water repellant by not water proof. It does give me lots of protection and quick access to my gear. Right on F-Stop makes nice bags! i have the large ICU for my 4x5 system that i stick in a Gregory Whitney 95. I went with the Lowepro Whistler BP 450 AW for my Mamiya system as I have had issues with out of stock orders from F-Stop. I was just concerned that if the boat rolled for some reason or the bilge filled with water my gear would be ruined, hence the pelican idea. Thanks again, we are planning our first BWCA trip for next summer so Im doing some research. I subscribed to your ch also and im looking forward to more of your videos from the Arrow Head region!

Awesome photos! Wonderful scenery! I'm curious as to how you get the colors to come out so nice? What camera did you use? Settings? I get so frustrated, 1/2 the time my pictures take forever to correct.

Beautiful video! makes me wish I was up in the bwca right now! Fortunately I am going there at the end of September!! Although, I am having a tough time choosing an entry point/lakes. Any suggestions?
Thanks Nick - The end of September is a great time to go to the BWCA... my favorite. In fact, my group will be going up in late Sept too. As for suggestions, take a look at my other videos... most of them are late Sept. That will give an idea of what some of the other entry points are like... there are no bad choices :-)

Thanks for watching! I probably take too much photo gear... 2 DSLR bodies, 16-35mm, 24-105mm and 70-200mm lenses... and a little point and shoot camera that I keep with me all the time.
