    Just finished watching this. It was grueling to watch. Especially the end. I would 100% recommend watching it, but its one of those that you watch once in your life time. Go see it.

    I don't know what everyone is complaining about. This movie is riveting. I was upset they didn't follow the rules as originally planned. They just let the guards do whatever no matter how messed up it was. Im surprised they didn't get sued in real life.The prisoners obviously suffered severe mental and physical abuse. They should have stepped in. And the parole part... My God.

    It really was an ugly situation that trashed every ethical standard for
    dealing with humans in (Psychology) experiments, and I hope you look it up on the web. I saw the grueling footage
    moment to moment in college.
    The fact that Stanford let it get so far out of hand, in 1971, says a lot
    about the way humans , unfortunately, comply to role & in group, and the danger of men together in groups (I'm sure women as well). Let's not forget what US Soldiers just did to (whomever they
    scooped up), or what is going on right now in prisons inside America.

      ***** Das Experiment is the German film from 2001. One of the leads in the German movies was Moritz Bleibtreu, who also was in Run, Lola, Run, Der Baader Meinhof Komplex and World War Z. The Experiment was a remake of that film.

    Just a small detail, but in the movie, they used the phrase "on the same page", which I don't believe was used until after 1971. The first citation of the phrase came from around 1974. Obviously though, the movie was great if this is the type of flaw I'm pointing out.

      I noticed this too! It seemed jarring, but cursory research (Thanks, Google!) points to its use as plausible, especially in an academic context. So I'll let it go. Fantastic movie. What a hard watch. Especially as the last film in a triple bill with The Experimenter and The Experiment. I found The Experimenter to be the best of the bunch, with TSPE a close second. Crucially, I'd rewatch The Experimenter, but never this movie. Once was good, but enough.

    This movie was super-tense, and pretty great. Lots of discussion fodder here. I was locked in all the way through. My only big gripe is that they just kinda throw you in and never really establish what the goals of the experiment are beforehand; a little more context at the start would have made this top-notch.

    This film describes only a part of what's happening in real prison as Zimbardo originally meant it by initiating the actual prison experiment in 1971. It brings a huge contribution to psychology and, ceteris paribus, finds a correlation among independently controlled variables ( prison environment and authority) and dependently measured variables (submission, irritation, and other relevant behaviors).

    That bullshit about "knowing" the director irks me a little. Just another detail of pettiness and withholding truth in this culture. If he was my best friend, I would tell him the truth about his film, as if he wouldn't be curious to know my opinion. It's not a good enough reason to withhold criticism.

      MérKjarúl TruG They're really honest. They reviewed a documentary about Cenk Uygur (who founded TYT) that was directed by a guy that used to direct What the Flick, but they didn't shy away from any criticism there.

    • @KainErrow
      @KainErrow 9 років тому

      Matt Cipolla I really can't watch that one because I'd argue we've already seen a severe ... curtailing of the reviewers ability to independently speak for TYT. When you have Cenk coming in to provide a 'Cenk' review of a movie that his own staff already reviewed, as part of his 'Founders' privilege, it severely undermines the program. (I'm referring to 'Mad Max,' here, and I have not seen the movie) If Cenk had simply done a non-TYT quickie review (including mention of it in a blog or vlog, even just a quick tweet) tyat would have been something else.

    • @oldmoviemusic
      @oldmoviemusic 9 років тому +4

      Gangrel Aussie for the Mad Max review I think that was just because Cenk couldn't make it to the filming of the previous review, and he too wanted to give his opinion on a movie that had a lot of hype that he felt was somewhat undeserved. That has no effect on the other reviewers' abilities to speak independently for TYT - rather, it is merely a side review by someone who is obviously not a professional reviewer for those who happen to want to hear his opinion. It's nothing more than that - I think you're taking its ethical repercussions too far.

  • @GiaDiamond4
    @GiaDiamond4 9 років тому +1

    Anyone think it was strange how they got rid of 8612 so soon after presenting him as what seemed to be the main character? And then his friend left right after him? After that, I wasn't connected with any of the prisoners and I didn't really care anymore. It then became a story more about some guy running the prison experiment, rather than the boys dealing with the prison experiment, and the latter is much, much more interesting.

    • @artsyafroqueen
      @artsyafroqueen 8 років тому +2

      I have to agree with you, Ezra Miller was so great that I knew his character was the one to get out in two days, as I knew one of the boys in the experiment managed to get out early and I knew it was going to be him which partly made me upset because he was the most interesting, alongside Tye Sheridan (819) and two of the guards.

    It would be nice to see a dramatic interpretation of this experiment that looked at it objectively, that is to say, acknowledging the tremendous flaws it has. The main experimenter inserting himself into the experiment as the warden especially has taken away much of the strength of the experiment, but it seems to be maintaining its prominence through pop psychology, ensuring people's understanding of the science will remain flawed.

    • @oldmoviemusic
      @oldmoviemusic 9 років тому

      JGonspy I think this is indeed as objective as a cinematic version can be, in that it is trying to show the events as they truly happened - plus, it has the Olivia Thirlby character who you can see in the trailer is admonishing the experiment and telling the professor that he is wrong etc. Any more opinion than that and they'd have to make a documentary.
      As far as a movie goes, it is as objective as a movie could be. What you want does seem to be an HBO documentary.

    The biggest problem with the Stanford Prison Experiment, the experiment not the movie, is that they had 24 people, 12 guards and 12 prisoners. What the fuck prison has a 1 to 1 ratio between prisoners and guards? In California, 5 to 1 prisoners to guards is the average. The results of the experiment would have been tremendously different is they had had a 5 to 1 ratio of prisoners to guards, especially because the guards had no real power in this experiment. From the trailer of the movie that they showed in this video, there is a point where the guards physically take control of the prisoners, that shit wouldn't happen if the guards were outnumbered 5 to 1, if there were 4 guards and 20 prisoners, there is no way that that shit could have went down. In real life there are guard towers that have guards with guns, the experiment had no guns, therefore the guards had no power other than, apparently from this trailer, batons, and 4 dudes with batons does not beat 20 unarmed dudes. I do think this movie will be interesting, but the original experiment that it is based off of is flawed and unscientific.

      @investined 9 років тому +3

      The piont of the experiment was to deduce whether people in power no matter how good can abuse that power and people in a subjigated environment whether they would comply or rebel. It had nothing to do with recreating a actual prison environment to see how it runs.

    • @markalexander774
      @markalexander774 9 років тому

      ed invested "The Stanford Prison Experiment set out to examine the psychological effects of authority and powerlessness in a prison environment"
      From the universities own words, it sounds to me like they were trying to study the psychological effects of the two groups of people in a prison environment, they literally used the words "prison environment." However, they did not create a prison environment, a real recreation, which by their own testimony they were attempting to do, would not have had a 1 to 1 ratio, unless it was some super maximum security prison for the people we deem to be the most dangerous, like Guantanamo Bay.

    This movie was boring. "The EXperiment" with Adrien Brody and Forest Whitaker was better. The guards started acting like douchebags immediately, there was no transition or adjustment period for them and it felt so unrealistic. It also made me roll my eyes how fragile they made the prisoners, I get that a lot of people can't take much abuse, but I've been through worse. Try having four Drill Sergeants who all look like they could lift a truck stand around you screaming at the same time poking you in the face with their lemon squeezers(hats for you civies). That shit lasted for 3 months instead of 6 days. If thousands of people a year can make it through basic, they should have been able to make it more than a few days before they snap.
