This brought tears to this old combat wounded Vietnam war veteran, my late father was a WWII veteran, I thank you all for your honorable military service, God bless, and Welcome Home.
My uncle landed on the fourth wave of Omaha beach with an engineering unit. He was injured by a pop up mine that they were clearing. He was held back at the beach area while he healed from his wounds. Over all he as wounded three more times during the war will clearing mines, with the last wound happening during the battle of the bulge. This particular injury took him out of the war. My memories of him as a child were him going to the clinic to have bits of metal removed from his body. He died in his fifties and never spoke of these battles very much.
Every man who took part is such a hero to me. Thank you, I'm going to Omaha Beach on 01/04/2016 with my 2 boys (Age 9 and 14), this will be my 2nd visit and I'm going back again in November (every year I will return to pay my respects). I always have a beer and tip a beer on the beach for those who were so young not to even enjoy a full life but I appreciate so much the chance I have been given in my life through everyone's heroism. Brilliant documentary, this should be compulsory learning in schools. Thank you. I wish I could meet just one veteran to shake you them by hand, amazing people.
Missed you by a month, I'll be visiting all 5 beaches and the para landing spots this Monday-Thursday! Can't wait, my Granddad was a Normandy Veteran in the Royal Navy on his anti-submarine Corvette ship crossing with the thousands of other vessels on the morning of June 6th and for the next few months going up and down the Normandy coast looking out for and protecting supply ships to the Mulberry Harbour from U-boats in the channel.
Wow,you go every year,I am trying to get there once,I am trying to save up,but or seems like it's so much, what do u think I should do,what is the cheapest way to go?
Thank you for recording your experiences Sir. I wish many many more would do this. This is a valuable piece of history, and more efficient for future reference than any text book could provide. Men like you are my heroes
During a fight like this one, each individual will experience the battle differently.. Their own particular mental make up, immediate circumstances, age, training, etc will dictate how they precieve the battle, experience their surroundings , how they process it & later remember the whole thing. It is an individual experience.
Thank you Sir to you and the brave men who sacrificed their life on that historic day June 6 1944 . We can never repay for your heroic acts. God bless you! Usa usa!!
Warren was a friend of mine. What the interview doesn't tell you is that Warren was assigned to the Pacific theater after his unit was sent back to the States and he was then assigned to the invasion of Okinawa. Warren was always ready to talk about D-Day - I never heard him say a word about Okinawa.
I'm trying to wrap my head around this operation. I think whoever planned this didn't thought about soldiers as individuals but as swarm of flesh that would push through the beach and one way or another a few would make it to finish the mission. They were sent there to die. I've been watching a few interviews and aparently they knew it.
@rk La Pointe Du Hoc is the highest point between Omaha and Utah beaches. At the time of the invasion it was believed to be an artillery emplacement but not so, it was a deception. The artillery barrels turned out to be telegraph poles. The photo is too relaxed to be taken during combat and possibly taken on the Isle of Wight when the Rangers were being trained by the Royal Marine Commandos on cliff assault techniques.
There isn't much actual film at all of Omaha Beach. Most of the film clips are from Utah Beach. Not many photographer arrived with the equipment intact and most of it was destroyed by the developer when it was sent back to be processed.
And at times I envision myself, first wave, in an LST, hatch goes down, first row guy,s buy it right there ... Holy Shit does anybody anno 2020 has this Courage, these Balls and such Absolute Conviction, Believing in a Greater Good; "say NO to Tyrants, then Scream loudly: Say YES for free will & self determination... And not during a protest march, safely back home while afterwards going for a beer thinking I've done my duty .. But anno 2020 Do we still have such integrity, such strength of will power and character to put it all on the line ..
my dad was 1st wave that landed on omaha beach. he and my mom went to france for 50th normandy anniversary in '94. we miss you dad.

"War is a lousy way to solve a problem". Listen to this man, he knows.
It is, but sometimes the only way.

One G.I.'s recollections of his experience landing on Omaha beach, D-Day. This is an excellent first person recounting of those events.

I met Warren at an IU football game in 2000. We became very good friends with Warren and his wife, Bonnie. Great people.
I'm not certain, but the still at 4:40 looks like the cliff at Pointe Du Hoc, rather than something at Omaha.
