I had one of these and played it a lot. Passes are intercepted if the defender is at the line of scrimmage or farther downfield. If the defender is on your side of the line of scrimmage, you can pass over them (so you can pass over up to two defenders if your QB is backed up all the way). Hitting "Kick" after hiking the ball (i.e. backing up one spot) attempts a field goal. Hitting kick without hiking first is a punt.
I am pushing 50 and still have my original. Loved this game. My thumbs cramp just thinking of the hours I put in on this game.
I'm 45 and me and my cousins would stay up til morning center playing this
2:18 pass now. Once they move forward you CAN pass.
One of my favorite singers who recently passed away used this handheld game for one of his songs called wide receiver.

I still have mine but I ripped out the wafer speaker when I was a boy so I could play it in the back of the classroom without the teacher hearing it. It is still fun to play though.
I still have mine after all these years and have been playing in quarantine. Those three guys in front of your quarterback are not defensive. They are offence. You can pass over their heads as soon as they move off the line. You have only the quarterback and then the pass reliever you control. Great game!

I played this game 5000 times as a child. I had full made up schedules. It was so fun. I love this game.
I bought one this weekend (4-21-24) at a comic con for $20 with the box (no instructions)...took it home, put batteries in it..the blips are faint and I couldnt get ANY progress on it..i never got one opening. Played for about 5 minutes and put it back in the box and in the closet. Doubt i'll ever touch it again..wanted it for nostalgia sake only. I own the mattel soccer version i got for xmas in 1978 when i was 8..i still have it and it still plays good.
Fun fact: the sound effect in "Logical Song" after Roger says "digital" is from this console!
You can pass over two when they pass the line.

Mattel Electronics Football, Entex Baseball 2, and Coleco Head to Head Hockey were my favohandheld games. I still own the functioning Football and Hockey games.

I still have mine, in its original box. From 1978
Have mine and it still works!.. correction though... it doesnt automaticallly decide if its a punt or a field goal try... to punt, just hit kick. for a field goal attempt, go back 1 or 2 spaces, then hit kick. Also, as soon as the defender moves forward, you can pass over them. My trick also was to when (if) I got to the oposite side of the field, pause, and wait for the defender to mover towards you, opening up the other side, then proceed and you have a clear field for maybe 5 or so yards.
At the 3:24 mark of Supertramp’s Logical Song, the tackle sound from this (probably the original version, really) sounds. 🤔

I had the Coleco quarterback game but I remember borrowing this one from a friend and this one was easier.
I'm looking into getting one of these been fascinated with these ever since I watched that episode of that 70's show where Kelso is playing the exact one you are holding I know they make keychains of them might get those.

Last time I watched football on TV, this looked somewhat different. The Abstraction is strong with this one.
I have one that belonged to my brother, it works perfectly but I no longer have the box or the battery cover.
I have a very nice copy of this. I like it a little better than Mattel’s original for the reasons you mention... plus the field was a little longer. :)

Yep. Mattel Electronics Football I did not have a 'pass' function; Mattel Electronics Football || added the 'pass' function & a few other new functions and features.
I saw the white (or was it greenish? I dont remember) version of this at a flea market today! I thought about getting it because it was only $5, but I'll have to wait till next time. It looks like a really neat little gizmo. I have to say, gamers of the late 70s and 80s had a LOT more imagination than todays gamers, because this is the barest minimum of what qualifies as video game graphics--its literally just blinking red dots jerry-rigged to play a game of football in your head! Even Pong and the Magnavox Oddysey at least had a background and white squares, if nothing else! Heck, even Tiger Electronic LCDs have more detail than this! Talk about abstract! Its a far cry from the Switch being able to render the lush worlds of games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild while you're on the go, to say nothing of contemporary football games! :)

Yeah you cant just sit there you can pass fine if theres one defender between you & your receiver, & he moves at least 1 step toward you. You had at least 2 opportunities to pass 2:18 & 4:27

They made games in all kinds of dumb ways
This game sucks
So you do,
You can pass over one defender but not two...
you CAN pass over 2..but they have to move 2 lines
