How is the garden looking in Spring 2024?

- We started bringing this garden back from the dead in 2021. That meant ripping out a whole load of invasive plants to allow the garden to thrive. In the past a few folks have mentioned we shouldn’t have been so hard with the initial cut-back but they genuinely don’t have a clue about the sacrifices you have to make on a project like this. We ripped out brambles, bindweed, snowberries, ivy and many other invasive plants. We dug out thousands of roots by hand. The garden was infested with rats since it had been left ‘to nature’ for so long. We’re now slowly seeing this garden come back to life. Enjoy our Spring 2024 with a brief peek of summer too!

You’ll get a better indeterminate tomato yield by pinching back all but the main leader. Signs of caterpillar activity on foliage means more baby bird food now & more butterflies later > more birds. Seek out host plants for your native butterflies. The larvae must have those plants to metabolize into adults > more birds. With the stream behind you, there should be a good amphibian population and they will eat the slugs and snails, which encourages a more complex and complete habitat. Toads are excellent garden companions, plus they’re cute. 🙂
Need to build the earth up on the spuds. Would be worth having a second interlocking section to go on top of the raised bed so you can add more soil to them.
Some Heucherer’s like shady parts of the garden and they come in a variety of colours. They die back in winter then grow back and they also flower with a variety of colours, depending on species. We love them. The leaves are the best bit in my opinion. You get autumn colour too. ❤
Great stuff - will check in to that - cheers!
@@AndyMac Try heuchera "Marmalade", they eventually create side shoots too which if you chop off and pot you get free ones. If you're lucky they last through winter too.
Andy be very careful with the Californian lilac (ceanothus) it starts off controlled but can shoot up in to a huge bush within three years .Great if it's got a massive space so make sure it's in the right place .Just spent the whole afternoon trimming back my 4 MTR wide by 3 MTRS high so called "wall shrub climber" 😊 Gardens looking beautiful ,great job 🥇
the pink plant in the pot looks like pinks. Part of the Dianthus family - pinks, sweet william, carnations
Its all looking rather nice Andy. You must both be very pleased to see that of all of your hard work is paying off and that you're on the way to a beautiful garden (I mean its good now but I'm sure that it'll get better). I particularly like your 'wild' area. Thanks for the video.
Cheers! Decking aside, this is the first year we've been able to enjoy the garden without other building work going on so it's a nice change. 😁
Your garden is looking incredible! RE the potatoes- I would recommend chopping the potato berries/potato flowers off. The potatoes will focus on the flowers rather than making tubers.
Cheers for the potato tip - will get on that! 👍👍
It looks like paradise. Its amazing how much you have transformed your garden.
Hi Andy. Re the Peony, you will need to put a tall wire mesh around the plant so as to avoid severe drooping. The Agapanthus prefer being on their own, as they tend to multipy year on year & need the room. The root system is nuts with these plants. You done well bud, really well.
Cheers! Yeah, I have it staked but I need to add some new string... before it flops! 😁
Andy you need some ducks to get rid of your snail problem 😂
We get some coming up from the river every now and then! 😂
Love it.😊
👍🌞
One of the allotments near us, they have blue plastic pipe bent into arches above their raised beds, with netting over.
Yeah that seems to be the method of choice - I gave loads away too! 😭😭
@@AndyMac I suppose anything 'bendy' would do... Got any curtain rail from the renovation left? 😂
It's all looking great Andy, glad to see your Fuchsias made it through the winter after all !
Don't forget, if you're not in need of it for paths or mulch, you can add some wood chips to the compost heap to balance out all those grass clippings !
Looking forward to seeing the decking project !
Thank you! The Fuchsia on the 'sunny' side is growing very slowly for some reason. Too much sun? 🤔 The rest are doing great! I've got a store of cardboard too for compost-brown waste. 👍👍
Did You Know....
The Deciduous Azalea, also comes in some AMAZING shades of yellow and dark red. . . .
Garden looks great, all your hard work has definitely paid off!
great video - garden is looking very well
hopefully you record the deck build on either here or the handyman channel. i have just decided to plan out a decking area at the rear of my house so some expert help would be great!
looking forward to the deck video finally! need to do ours before the 29th of june, don't suppose you can have it installed and uploaded by then? 😁😆😆
Nice tour of the garden Andy, some little gems for the cooks amongst us, nice one !
Cheers - defo! The few that the slugs haven't eaten. 😂
It’s looking good, Andy. My wife is the ‘proper’ gardener; I’m just the DIYer. Funny you mention decking, I needed to move mine in order to replace the pond liner and it just needs staining; and the greenhouse is full of carpet to go under the liner. Work in progress, as they say. Keep up the good work 🌞
Cheers Ray! Carpet under the liner? I'm intrigued! 🤔👍😎
Perfect work for so short time. My congratulations. Its really fantastic
Thank you - getting there!
The best thing I've found for holding up netting/fleece/plastic or whatever are lengths of 1/2" (12-13mm) PEX flexible water pipe cut to suitable lengths for hoops with the ends fitted over lengths of 3/8" (9-10mm) reinforcing bar stuck in the ground, either inside or outside of the boxes. If they're inside they're out of the way of strimmers and such, but I've done both. Advantages and disadvantages to both.
I gave loads away too! 😭
The unknown plant in the bucket are Pinks also called Sweet William. Nice fragrant choice for the garden.
Ah thank you! Lovely plant! Tempted to plant it out since it always seems to survive winter in a pot. 👍
@@AndyMac I had several in one of my garden beds, always a favorite of the family and me too. BTW, my garden is zone 6A. Your garden has really come on beautifully, congrats to you and Mrs Mac!
Hi Andy, your garden is looking well , should you do any thing different, no your doing a great job, you have got an amazing garden and every thing is growing well. As always a great video Take care
Thank you! Still early days but getting there!
Hi Andy. It’s all looking great. I’m not a fan of decking high maintenance etc, it looks good as it is or use paving slabs. Just my view, many thanks for your videos I look forward to them.
Cheers! This will be properly designed for minimal maintenance. 👍👍
Hi Andy, love the channel and progress you have made.
Did you put weed sheet under the gravel at the back of the house where the gravel is. I have some gravel and weed sheet further down my garden, its a haven for ants nests.
Thank you! Yes, heavy duty weed barrier under the gravel where the decking will be. We have ants everywhere though! Not just in the gravel - literally everywhere. 😬
@@AndyMac The saga continues :)
Im looking forward to the new content and updates on both channels.
Looking great.
It's pho-tin-ee-uhh and a-kill-ee-uhh btw 🙂
Thank you - every day is a learning day! 😁😁👍
Hi Andy, can i ask what type of timber did you use for your patio edging and raised beds?
The raised beds are C24 treated. Everything else is just wood scraps I happened to have lying around (the decking will cover the patio one anyway). 👍
@@AndyMac Thank you 👍
I'm a newbie and was wondering if Zinias come up every year & how tall do they grow?
As far as I know they're annual but they can grow quite tall (0.5-1m ish?). There some good vids on YT of pros growing them.
A few might self seed but for the most part you’ll need to reseed annually. They’re native to the hot southwest of the USA & northern Mexico, so need maximum sun. Annual in four-season climates.
Where are all the weeds?😂 Not sure how you seem to only have the plants you planted in the beds without weeds filling the gaps?
Ha ha, there's plenty weeds! But Mrs Mac did the 'rounds a week or so ago so they're not too bad. 🤞
💝💓💖
Why decking over patio Andy just out of interest?
