    Phillip felt strongly he could “help” Diana because he felt like they were in the same predicaments, but Phillips failed to notice how the differences cast a valley between their thinking. Namely, his wife loved him unconditionally, and Diana’s husband…certainly not.

      Strongly agree. I did a history essay on Diana in high school. Honestly I felt for her. I have little respect for Camilla. Diana seemed to have suffered because Charles didn’t give her a chance. Which is so sad and awful. I wonder what life would have been like if Charles gave Diana the time of day. I was a little kid when Diana died. But the look of shock on my mum’s face is something I have never forgotten. I don’t think Diana would have liked Meghan purely for rift she has put between Will and Harry.

      @@lauraclaire actually it was reported by many that Charles actually paused his affair with Camilla just after he married Diana and only resumed said affair after Diana cheated on him first with her bodyguard. Regardless of whether this report is true or not, Diana was actually a difficult wife as well. There were many reports that Charles fired many staff, rehomed his dog, and had to distance himself from his friends just to please Diana because she didn't like them. Apparently, he would also try to get Diana professional help for her bulima, but she would refuse it. And if we were to talk about infidelity, infidelity went both ways. In fact, Diana actually cheated first in the marriage (something she admits in an interview, but I can't remember which one) and she even had affairs with multiple men including married ones, breaking multiple marriages in the process. Apparently, Diana actually had obsessive tendencies where the wives of men she had slept with, would actually file restraining orders against her. Either way, none of this condones Charles as he was far from the perfect husband, but to say that he was the only one wrong in the marriage is simply not true.

      @@GTK4217 again if you read carefully what I commented Charles did try to please and make Diana happy just after they got married. It's only after having been married to Diana for a while that Charles had enough of her behaviour and went back to his lover Camilla. Besides if you want to talk about emotional abuse, did you know that Diana actually pretended to have the same interests and hobbies as Charles to be seen as a suitable wife? And then she dismissed those hobbies as boring and tried to get Charles to drop them during her honeymoon with Charles? Did you also know that those staff Charles had to fire just to please her needed those jobs? But that they only got fired, not because of their incompetence, but just because Diana didn't like them? Did you also know that the dog Charles had was his longtime companion that he had to let it go just because Diana didn't like pets? And what of the wives of the marriages that Diana broke? Did they deserve that? I am not saying Charles was the ideal husband, he wasn't, but if we were to look at this objectively, both parties were flawed and ultimately not suited for one another

      Diana literally said IN ON SCREEN INTERVIEW she threw a vase at Charles within 2 years of marrige because she felt 'INHEARD IN THE SYSTEM"... Not only that but she tried to kill herself while pregnant with william and threw herself down the stairs in the last trimester of pregnancy with Harry.. She also married Charles who she said told her about his love for Camilla before marrige... Where she was failed was the lack of help for her serious mental problems. . She could have allowed charles to hook up with camila (something its implied she said he could do when he told her about his love for camilla) and gone on to have secret affairs with whoever she wished... with Charles blessing, had she only stayed quiet. Yes, Charles was seeing other women, but he didnt choose Diana and even she said he was cool with her "having fun" as long as it wasnt photographed. Charles, even though he cheated chronically... was NEVER photographed with camilla while married. Diana however was photographed with 3 married men. At her private apartment@@GTK4217

There, I said it.” In that moment, it was Tobias Menzies’ Philip speaking, not Jonathan Pryce. It was everything Tobias’ Philip wanted to say to Emma Corrin’s Diana at the end of 4x10 but didn’t.

    I adored Diana. But Ive always had a different perspective than others. I believe Charles did love her. Being 'in love' & loving someone is not the same. You cant help what your heart feels. But too often, she spoke before she thought. She used the media, for everything. Not realizing, that once you did that, there was no going back. Charles & Diana were both emotionally scarred, & flawed individuals.

    I think a part of why Phillip could not relate to Diana was girls were treated FAR worse in the royal family than boys. Endless speculation about weight, pregnancy, attire, sex lives, all swirled around female royals more than male. So for him it was oppressive, but for her, unbearable.

    • @shimanopetermann9068
      @shimanopetermann9068 9 місяців тому +3

      Phillip was treated quite unfairly in the beginning. It only stopped when he grew into his role and managed to use the system to his advantage. In the beginning, he was the foreigner, the brother of Nazis, the trophy husband (quite unbearable for a man of his generation and with his sense of pride).
      The reason why he couldn't relate to Diana was because he, in the end, managed to get accustomed to the system and because he understood that loyalty to the family as a whole was more important than the individual. Diana thought the opposite, feeling that her feelings were more valid than the stability of the family (a sentiment she and her husband shared). Phillip couldn't understand that she was unable to act happy for appearances sake in public as he had done.

    What I've learned from things like the crown and Harry walking away is that the 'royals" have to show to the outside world that they are somehow more special, appointed by God, or they lose their life of luxury. A "working" royal. You goto a luncheon at a daycare or shelter for women, listen to a speech, give a speech and never have to think about that place or those people again until next year. So you do luncheons and dinners and give speeches 2 maybe 3 times a day. Sounds like a lot of playing. 😊. And rocking the boat would show there is no need for them. It's like many areas of our government that aren't necessary.

      The excessive expectations, which became unrealistic and then impossible, tipping over into sustained personal attacks, because there can only be one saint at a time and there also has to be a villain/whore, came not from the royal family but from the press and mass media. In part that was the industry and its owners, but ultimately it was the public at large who consumed and paid for all that.
      The "system" is of the public's making. We are the one's who delude ourselves and willingly suspend our disbelief. This is not unique to a monarchy. There are fantasies and deceptions around an elected presidency and a theocracy too.
      We got to kill our fairy princess, indulge in recreational mourning and then point the finger of blame away from ourselves. That was the kind of emotional workout a good "women's film" used to give us, but in real time.
      We used to hold Hollywood stars up to those impossible standards. Gay men had to go out with pretend girlfriends. Ingrid Bergman was shamed for becoming known to have a relationship outside marriage and banished from the screen. Charlie Chaplin was allowed to get away with paedophilia, but banished for being a socialist. You could do all of those things, but that depended on the press agreeing to turn a blind eye. There must have been some quid pro quo for that to happen.
