What most people outside of Malaysia and Singapore know is that Proton has all along been something that is not to be trifled with. Even before the days that Proton purchased Lotus (yea. People tend to forget that they actually bought out Lotus and made the Elise), their techs were all from Mitsubishi which makes it super reliable, easy to maintain and relatively easy to make one go fast as hell. It's VERY common to see a Proton Saga made in the 80s still running bare stock till now with just a simple oil change even after dragging 450,000km on the meter count as it just last and doesn't destroy itself like many European cars of its time. Plus as mentioned, due to their Mitsubishi route, Proton excel in certain motorsports with their Wira being a WRC spec car and winning APRC (Asia Pacific Rally Championship) consistently followed by their Satria GTi and the Neo 2000. On the roads, its also common to see properly tuned Satria GTi's to slay vehicles 6x its price and 2-4x its original power figures on mountain passes like Genting or even on normal highway pulls like Kajang Highway. Protons are a rare and underappreciated gems and only people on our side of the pond knew.
Actually proton factory suspension setup although not a full blown racing suspension, But the factory setup is well tuned... Ample spring stiffness for road and comfort... Yet superior damping and properly sized swaybars for fast road application Yet not without sacrifice the comfort on a normal road car... This is what proton r3 team feedback gave to manufacturer even since the old days of "Tuned by Lotus" suspension era of Satria GTi and elevated performance+handling in Satria GTi R3... The fact that u can drive the GTi R3 straight from showroom and compete in rallysprint & gymkhana without even a single modification.. guess what? Scoring win or competetive podium spot is very big achievement... (Racing against proper rally car/tailored gymkhana spec car) Ever since that tuned by lotus era, proton's car handling is very well tuned for driving experience (literally) compared to toyota corolla sedan or daihatsu mini hatch, its night and day differences...
