  • The micro brand Baltic recently released a limited edition micro rotor dress watch called the MR01 its a stunning and a beautiful piece but I seem to have possibly run into some issues with the Hangzhou micro rotor movement. I'm no expert, so I'll let you be the judge if there is an issue or not. I will also be reaching out to Baltic about it and will update everyone after they respond.

    **Important Note**
I really enjoy watches and that's why I started this channel so I could review them regularly but my satisfaction is not found in owning or experiencing watches, no matter how many I may accumulate or how luxurious and expensive they may be . . .
Wise King Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 5:10 "He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity."
The truth is, material possessions of any kind, money, power, etc. never can and never will satisfy our hungering souls. Only knowing, loving, and serving God can truly satisfy.
The only way we can have a real relationship with God, the Creator of the Universe, is through the Lord Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God.
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6
Through Christ's sacrificial death on the cross, for my sins and your sins, and His resurrection from the dead we can have peace with God (Romans 5:1), forgiveness of sins (Acts 10:43), eternal life (John 3:16), and so much more!
In Christ, we can know true joy now and for all eternity.
"He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life." - 1 John 5:12

Never turn the time of your watch backwards unless the movement is specifically made for it (eg. a GMT)

Turning the hand backwards which you aren't supposed to do put unnecessary pressure on the parts. The one general rule is that if your mechanical watch's second hand does not stop when you put the watch in time setting mode, then you should definitely not turn the hands backwards.

It’s not unusual for the movement to stop when winding back. That’s by design, not a fault

Back hacking is not dangerous to a movement unless done constantly, which is the same rule for winding automatic watches etc.
Back hacking non stop seconds movements has been common practice for decades, often a recommendation on the famed el primero movement which has a constant running seconds.

This backward second hand move is called ’backhacking’.
I’m sure Marc from LongIslandWatch has a ’watch and learn’ video about it. 😉
So, on some movements without hacking you can move the second hand backward to use it as a hacking.
Mostly happened on old caliber when the power reserve is low.
Be careful not do it for too long as it could damage your movement as every pieces is running backward then.
A full power reserve with much more torque could really break something.
A few second at the time with low power reserve can make it as a ’hacking’.

    • @TheTownWatch
      @TheTownWatch  2 роки тому

Thanks. What is your opinion of when the second hand remained stopped once I pushed the crown back in?

    • @oOoScarecrow31oOo
      @oOoScarecrow31oOo 2 роки тому +2

@@TheTownWatch I'm not an expert but I guess if you shake it, it will put the pieces back in place.
And it might need a little more power to restart: so shake it and wind it. 😉
But like I said, don't do it too much, you risk damaging the movement.
I do it sometimes with my vintage Omega Constellation COSC from 1960 and it's still working perfectly.

@@TheTownWatch Back-hacking is possible on many movements, even in that of my modern Speedmaster Pro sandwich. When it's fully wound, slowly moving the crown counterclockwise can induce the cannon pinion to redirect the gear train backwards. However, the seconds fully stopping when the crown is pushed in is something I've noticed most on a couple of my vintage watches. What it means is that the watch isn't in beat. There are two banking pins on the main plate. The pallet fork should be centered between them when the power is released. I can't tell if the Hangzhou CAL5000A has a modern regulator arm and stud, which would simplify adjustment. This is obviously the tradeoff that you make at this price point. If Hangzhou movements underwent extensive adjustment before reaching Baltic, the watch would be more expensive. But Baltic really nailed the design and fit in my opinion. At this price point, I find this performance acceptable. You can take it to a watchmaker/servicer and just tell him/her to adjust the pallet fork between the banking pins and put the watch in beat. Alternatively you can just live with it as is. If it stops the next time you attempt to back-hack it, make a frisbee motion (but don't actually let it fly out of your hand). It should start back up. Or just avoid back-hacking. No big deal in my opinion. Acceptable. I'll even consider getting one. Thanks for your video.

  • @Mans1810

I think the back hacking is acceptable. Watch manufacturers just need to state it clearly on the manual. So that people don't freak out when they find out. In my opinion and form experience watches are designed to move forward. So I never advice setting the time backward. Thanks for the heads up though. I know what to expect when mine arrives. Cheers.

IMHO, Baltic did a bold and smart move to make an affordable micro-rotor watch with decent quality.
This is why the hype for this piece as one of the first affordable micro-rotor well done out of chinese usual quality.
Usually micro-rotor is found on very high-hand watches.
Nice piece indeed, in line with Baltic standard level of quality and all their straps are very good quality.
The price is correct for me as the quality of Baltic is very good.
My only small negative would be the 20 mm lug width that makes it look smaller.
But I get that Baltic keeps one size for their straps and it’s also easy to switch strap.

    Nice review.
I had something similiar happen to a Vostok Automatic. I hand wound it, would not start. Shook it, would not start. Took the caseback off and tapped the escape wheel with a screwdriver, started running. Somehow the balance wheel got stuck. I think that is what happened, but I can not be sure. Kind of like top dead center.
I actually have a Baltic Dual crown, it’s very nice. That has a Miyota 9039, which is proven as a reliable movement.
I know what they are trying to do, but using an unproven Chinese movement is not a good idea. For me I would want a movement that has been proven to be reliable.
As for the price, it is assembled in France and is very well done. That adds cost. The movement was a Chinese, but definitely not the most basic. I would say the price isn’t terrible, the French assembly probably adds a lot.

Maybe they should put a Japanese or Swiss movement in it. I’d be happy to pay for it if it means giving less business to the Chinese. Why? Taiwan, Tibet, Uighur peoples, Tiananmen Square, willful neglect of international trade laws, etc.

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! I definitely hear what you're saying but I would also say that every Chinese person or business is not directly or even indirectly involved in the atrocities of the of the CCP government. So I think a separation can be made with supporting a Chinese business (in this case, a movement manufacturer) and supporting the actual Chines government.

Chinese movement. If you missed the hype train for Baltic branding you can always find this movement for less under some other perhaps less marketed brand name. I.e. LOBINNI Watches Men Hangzhou 5000A will add the date complication for under $300. Not sure if in the end these Baltic watches maintain their elevated pricing, but I would not bet on it. It is a nice movement, but at the current rates going on eBay it would be hard to justify…. I wish Baltic was not creating the artificial constraint in supply, but if it works for them…

This was a good test and the movement failed.

This watch is as polarizing as Donald Trump. Why a micro brand is limiting a best seller is financial suicide. Baltic will never be a “Lange” you can get a much cheaper watch at Orient bambino or even a Marlin Timex. And that Chinese caliber is basically a throw away. The cost is NOT justifiable.

This watch isn't very original in its design. $630 for a cheap Chinese movement. That is so overpriced. Ridiculous.
