this is one of the best tutorials ever. at last someone who can structure and avoid redundance, and every bit of information is important. Donation made with pleasure.
I do hope a follow-up vídeo on CV functionality is in the works. This is my 3rd or 4th watching this one and I learn something new every time. Your videos are an invaluable resource!
This is the best video on this keyboard, that I have seen. It's the first one to explain things properly. I don't understand why Arturia haven't been able to make a video of this quality.
KSP owner for years, at best frustratingly 40% proficient with its features (had not even bothered to learn how to chain patterns 😂).Yours is the first and best video that lays it all in a way that a reasonably competent amateur finally writes all this to internal memory. Fantastic instruction and demonstration. Thanks!
i've searched the manual and some forums to learn how to record the arpeggiator to the sequencer. Alas without any luck. Thank god XNB mentions it at the end of the arpeggiator chapter. Thank you so much for these videos.
Thank you! I realized I've been severely underutilizing my KSP, which I absolutely love but use simply as a 4 Chanel midi keyboard 90% of the time. Also, your Bitwig tutorials are great and have helped me a ton!
Finally! I was hoping for a walkthrough for a while now! Thanks for the work. Much appreciated! I would love to watch an additional video on the CV and Gate controls! There is really not much to find on this topic!
Did you do a video about connectivity on the Keystep Pro? I have a Virus Ti desktop, an AFX Bass Station 2, a Dreadbox Nymphes, an Arturia MIcrfreak and a Behringer Poly D. I would also like to be able to use either my Drumbrute or SP404 Mk 2. I would be happy to pay you either for a tutorial or instructions. Warm regards
Yes, I'd love to see a tutorial on how to connect and control multiple synths with this keyboard. I have three Behringer semi-modular synths, I want to be able to connect all of them and create separate sequences on all three, then play them back simultaneously.
That is exactly what this keyboard controller is made for. The KSP is a very powerful sequencer that can do way more than most in built sequencers on a synth so just use the KSP. There are many tutorials online to discover everything you want about MIDI, also the manual for the KSP is available. The KSP will send 4 separate MIDI channels, each synth is set to the corresponding MIDI channel. One way to connect the KSP to your synths is to firstly get 3 MIDI cables and connect 2 from MIDI Out( which the KSP has 2) to MIDI in on 2 of your synths then use the MIDI thru port on one of the synths to connect the 3rd. Some synths will have a dedicated MIDI thru port ( In,Out,Thru)while others will have only MIDI In,Out or just MIDI In. Most synths with only MIDI In/Out will allow the MIDI Out to be changed to MIDI Thru (RTFM) . MIDI Thru allows the MIDI data to 'pass through' the synth onto the next from the KSP. Now, seeing you have Semi-Modular Synths you can trigger/sync etc from the KSP but that's different to MIDI. Another cool thing about the KSP is you can hook your PC/Mac at the same time to use drum software for example as what's a good synth setup without drums!
Profuse thanks for making this video! And, yes, could you please produce one about the CV connections and using Control mode--that seems incredibly powerful.
Yes, please do a full guide on all the connections in the back, also please do a video on how to tune the behringer edge and crave, i haven’t found any youtube videos explaining that!!!
I’ve had one for a few days and I love the thing. It’s so well thought out and finally chords and melodies are easy to build in a fun way, no more staring at Ableton. 5/5
I just bought one from a fisherman in Washington. The package is huge since he stuffed it with cushioning paper. Finally bit the bullet 🤑 and invested a quality sequencer! 🤞🚀
@xnb thank you for your hard work on these tutorials, by far the most in depth and well structured of any UA-camr out there. You're doing a real service to the world of self taught creatives ❤ I think a Keystep Pro Control Mode tutorial is indeed missing from UA-cam and I personally would like to learn more on it, so when you have time that would be Amazing. Thanks for all your hard work, I get such a buzz learning gear and I really come away from your videos knowing and instrument inside out 💯🙏
THANK YOU! You are a life saver. I have had one of these for a long time but have not used it much. I'm only 3.5 minutes into this video and already I have picked up a couple of useful tips. I look forward to watching the rest. I need to use my KSP as a MIDI through device to receive on the MIDI IN and relay the data to the CV/GATE outputs for some semi-modular gear. I hope that's possible? I think I would like it if you did another video covering the hardware interfaces, thank you! I'll be buying you a coffee for this one, for sure :)
Great video! As you mention right at the intro, have you made another video available looking at all of the different ways to connect the KSP to otehr external instruments / midi devices / audio interfaces etc?
Fantastic video particularly as English is not your first language. Where are you from? Your English is better than most English peeps. This video is in depth and specific at a speed that is completely understandable. Thanks you very much. Consider yourself subscribed to.
Great video... I just picked up one today specifically to use with my DFAM and Subharmonicon... and eventually other semi and modular devices via the CV outs and drum gates... would love a deep dive on that aspect of this beautiful midi controller...
helping me out a lot. The keyboard is the master on/off for the whole rig and controls 4 midi channels in my DAW whilst sending tempo and clock to my outboard gear which mostly have their own sequencers , like the micro freak and the TB-3. can't work out if I can play the outboard gear through it at the same time if My DAW is not being used without rewiring it, but its a wicked piece of kit
This is kind of what i am wondering too. My set up is a bit weird. My soundcard midi out goes to ksp which then goes via the kyp midi out to my kenton midi splitter and splits the mid around my synths. but as i now have a fifth and sixth machine i want to control via midi i have a bit of a prediciment lol. I want to just send some max 4 live sequncer midi to my 606 on a sperate midi channel channel....alas that doesn't work because the midi from my soundcard is going through the ksp. i guess i should have it connected how you do.
Thanks so much for this deep review. Can I ask, what's the sequencer resolution? Like I see that you can record unquantized this is great, but what about very fast notes (imagine an external arpeggiator going very fast for instance)?
You can delete chains. Well.... steps of chains. Just hold Erase and then tap the Chain button. Each tap of the Chain button will erase the next step in the chain until you get to zero. :)
Hi... a well thought out and put together tutorial video. Thank you! One thing I have been trying to do, but unsuccessfully, is to set up the KSP as the Master in Ableton... to start and stop recording in particular. Have you done any videos on this or are you able to advise at all? Cheers
Thanks a lot. I saw many tutorials on this, but your is the Best. Keystep pro is very powerful device, but there is one thing, I think it's not capable of... I think it can't do slides from one pitch to another. This feature would be great for basslines.
Can you do a video on connections please? I just bought this with a hydrasynth desktop and I’m having trouble understanding the routing of cables and connections and what they mean. I also bought an mpc x and I’d like them all to work together. I’m new to making music. I’ve been a dj for almost 2 decades. But this is all foreign to me yet. If you can make a video explaining the connections, I would be so grateful. 🙏🙏🙏
I just got mine and am loving it. However, one question I've had is regarding the apparent speakers on the keyboard itself. Do they even work? Maybe my output settings are wrong but I've never been able to use my Keystep's built-in speakers.
The new firmware 2.0 supports start/stop via external pedal, using mmc commands. Unfortunately i cant find information of which pedal i could use. Do you recommend a specific pedal? Do i need to use the sustain input for the pedal and how do i config it? In the actual manual its only written, that its possible but i cant find information to do it. The chain function would be very useful but i also want to have my hands free to play bass. When a song starts with a bassintro its not possible to press play on the ksp
Hi , is it possible to record a chrod , then use it in ARP mode ? and can you set the exact length of a note (in steps)? i would like to set notes 1,5 exactly 2 steps longs , is it possible ? i usally fix the lenght after on mygroovebox .
Can somebody tell me why i can't record my arpegiator? I've just updated the firmware before using as soon as i bought, also my arpegiator only works if play is active otherwise plays a chord. Thanks for your help!!
Thanks for the video, very helpfull! I have one question: you can transition your entire track to another note. But that, is most cases, is kinda useless unless we can transition every track towards that note. Is it possible to group the tracks and transition all of them towards a different key at the same time?

Your tutorials are the best❤ Could you make a tutorial about Teenage Engineering OP-1 field please 🙏🙏🙏
I didn't know Step Skip existed, and it's great because it effectively gives you a much longer pattern (I'm assuming you can do it with a 64-step pattern, making effectively 256 steps?) My one question: is the number of loop instances fixed at 4, or can you somehow change it to 3?
Hi folks. I have a synth query. All help appreciated. Esp any owners of the keystep pro Disclaimer. I have used synths before BUT this is my first dive into controlling synths externally and first ever time using cv. The problem: it just triggers one sound no matter what key I press (yes, the keystep pro is set to drum mode). Also, when I switch to any other track, the volca is still sounding when I hit a key. But it's a different drum being played. 2. The minologue is being sounded on track 1 instead of track 2. So I'm hearing a tom drum AND whatever note I'm hitting on the minologue together on track 1, but no sound on track 2. (So track one is triggering two instruments at once) 3. Track three and four there is no sound coming through. As I've said, I have never used CV before. And I think the issue may be that I need two connections per instrument, one for pitch and one for gate. Is that correct? The obvious answer is internal midi needs to be routed differently. Wow. This is so incredibly helpful and direct. Gratitude for taking the time to shoot this guide!
You're the MAN!!!!!!!!! I bought one back in April 2020 and been wanting a deep-dive on it!!! Thanks a million
i've searched the manual and some forums to learn how to record the arpeggiator to the sequencer. Alas without any luck. Thank god XNB mentions it at the end of the arpeggiator chapter. Thank you so much for these videos.
It’s in the new manual available on the Arturia website. Page 71
Just want to say your tutorials are fantastic…thank you
A set up w all the different MIDI options would be sooooo helpful. Appreciate what you do dude!
Just got it yesterday. Thank you
Thank you! I realized I've been severely underutilizing my KSP, which I absolutely love but use simply as a 4 Chanel midi keyboard 90% of the time. Also, your Bitwig tutorials are great and have helped me a ton!

Best Keystep Pro tutorial on UA-cam!
This is a very well-done tutorial, thank you.
Glad to hear that. Thanks for the comment Andrew.
Thanks for all your hard work and expertise. Peace and blessings to you and your family.
best tutorial an all the dvices. much love and support my man!!
One of my most favorite channels on here.
Hey, thanks for the support !!!
Best channel on UA-cam to learn gear 🙏🏻 Thank you so much!
Great tutorial, much appreciated
Thanks! Great video! It would be amazing if you did one just on the control mode.
Did you do a video about connectivity on the Keystep Pro? I have a Virus Ti desktop, an AFX Bass Station 2, a Dreadbox Nymphes, an Arturia MIcrfreak and a Behringer Poly D. Another great video with all the details and intricacies. Thank you
yes please connectivity video!!!!!
dayyyuuuuuuuuuuuuuum you just made that so much easier thank you brother
I found the manual to be really annoying. The information was sort of scattered all over. This tutorial is good, very fast but good. Thank you!
Arturia should really hire people who are able to write manuals. The one for the Keystep Pro is not their only one seriously lacking coherence.
Yes, I'd love to see a tutorial on how to connect and control multiple synths with this keyboard. I have three Behringer semi-modular synths, I want to be able to connect all of them and create separate sequences on all three, then play them back simultaneously.
But also thank you for this very thorough walk-through!
That is exactly what this keyboard controller is made for. The KSP is a very powerful sequencer that can do way more than most in built sequencers on a synth so just use the KSP. There are many tutorials online to discover everything you want about MIDI, also the manual for the KSP is available. This is an amazing resource and video. Thank you!!!!
Great overview and detail even for experienced users. Still some fine advices to take from. Liked and subscribed, well deserved 🎉 thank you
best viedeo for keystep pro so far, thank you very much!!
Great tutorial ! Very detailed and insightful
As always superb tutorial. I also support the idea of making a follow up video about connections as you proposed.

Awesome tutorial for a beautiful music tool, thank you!
This tutorial is so helpful, thanks so much man! Would appreciate one on how you connect it with external gear also!
Nice explanation ❤
They did an update on the firmware with pattern changes btw. Maybe do a part 2 with the control features as well? Amazingly thorough video.

video about connections made with keystep pro would be also very good
Great explanation 👏👏👏very usefull !!
Wow, this guy`s on speed. This aint no walkthrough its a runthrough.
😂
On God🏃🏽
UA-cam playback speed would help with this 😂
Thank you very much this was necessary ❤

Can you set MIDI CH 1 to have the 5 encoders CC let's say, CC1, CC2, CC3, CC4, CC5, and have MIDi CH 2 to have CC6, CC7, CC8, CC9, CC10???
Sequencing sampled breakbeats? Layering drums over the top? Is that possible? Thanks in advance...
And yes, another video would be awesome!

Hello, is there any way to have sub steps for the drum part ? I'd like to make drum rolls like with the SUB button of the TR8S
Wow, thanks!!!!
To remove the pattern from chain you press Chain + Clr Ptn.
Is there a modular hookup video?
Thanks, great video. I just tried to donate a few dollars but my pay pal account is messed up even if I use my visa card
ahaha, thanks man. No problem, just like and sub, that would be enough :)
Was just gonna buy the 37 until I saw this
Hi folks. I have a synth query. All help appreciated. Esp any owners of the keystep pro
Disclaimer. I have used synths before BUT this is my first dive into controlling synths externally and first ever time using cv.
I just bought an arturia keystep pro to control my korg minologue XD, microfreak, model D and volca sample. (I was under the impression I could control all the above with a KSP, sequence and compose dawlessly. Maybe I was mistaken)
I plugged in all my hardware. Each piece is making sound when played on its keyboard so I know audio is not the issue. My volca keys is hooked up to midi out 1. My minologue to midi out two. The other two are three and four with a single cv
Here are my three issues:
1. On track 1 the volca is sounding when I hit a key! Hurray.
(So track one is triggering two instruments at once)
3. Track three and four there is no sound coming through. As I've said, I have never used CV before. And I think the issue may be that I need two connections per instrument, one for pitch and one for gate. Is that correct?
The obvious answer is internal midi needs to be routed differently. Well, I can try! I don't know how this works on the keystep, there seems to be 16 midi channels but I don't understand what that means. Also, I assumed that out of the box it would be routed logically ie. Midi/cv outputs 1 2 3 and 4 correspond to those tracks.
Could it possibly be a software bug? I've heard they're buggy? Should I do a firmware update?
Am I missing something obvious? Does anyone have any insight? All help appreciated. Thanks
Excellent decision to NOT focus so much on CV connections. That would be best served in a separate video IMO. There’s enough going on right here, thank you.
