There are actual subreddits that glorify/normalize cheating, but so many people there who get with taken people say they wouldn't tolerate family members doing it. Rules for thee but not for me. It's despicable.

Imagine saying to a toddler "lying is bad" now imagine being in 1940'd germany where solders are knocking on your door asking if any jewish people are in you're basement. Possibly some of the worst kinds of hypocrisy comes from politicians. These are people that write the laws/rules everyone else must live by while often not living by these same rules, and that can be downright infuriating at times.
Yes, hypocrisy as described in the video is bad enough, but it’s even worse the more power you actually have to affect how others behave. Sadly, and irritatingly, it’s also hugely advantageous a behavioral pattern, if you want to get a political position of all sorts: act palatable on the outside, but then do whatever behind the scenes. Also, I’d argue there’s a bit that the video didn’t consider: the inverse correlation between hypocrisy and morality. Those who are hypocritical can continue to reap the benefits of being moral while, in practice, disregarding moral standards in favor of what benefits them, but they’re also more incentivized to argue in favor of moral standards that are unfair, untenable, or straight-up harmful, but benefit them. After all, they don’t intend to abide by them anyway. That becomes even more dangerous in the hands of someone who actually can set moral standards through their platform and the actual legal system. Meaning hypocritical politicians are not just regular hypocrites who particularly benefitted from their hypocrisy and now get to set mandatory standards of behavior they don’t abide by. They’re also genuinely dangerous because they have an incentive to use their sometimes ample powers in order to set up rules that benefit them regardless of how much they harm those who abide by them, and can do so to a far greater extent than someone who does it overtly. On a smaller scale, but not to a lesser degree, this applies to all figures of authority, including bosses, teachers, religious leaders, and most of all parents.
The state is the most hypocritical institution there is. The state in the UK has hydrogen bombs while at the same time punishing people for even carry pepper spray for self protection. The state in principle taxes people at gunpoint but will call that blackmail if a private citizen did the same and send him to jail for many years. The state can take a person's physical freedom from them but calls it kidnapping if a private citizen does the same thing. And despite this most people, like the conformist cowards and fools they are, will ridicule anarchism.
That is true - I think this probably goes some way to explaining why we tend to judge people more harshly for saying one thing and then doing another, rather than doing something and then condemning themselves in hindsight
@@JorgeChavez-du5vm It is probably a lack of self-awareness. They may think that they have changed from their old ways but then unconsciously will tell others one way proceeding to do the opposite. (Just my assumption.) :)

Well, most climate activists I've met and movements I've come across completely ignore veganism, despite animal agricultural being one of the largest drivers of warming... So the hypocrisy runs far deeper than rich people
@curiousponderings correct! My previous reply appears to have disappeared, but here's essentially what it said... Show me the climate movements and activists that are committed to veganism. Animal ag is one of the largest destructive forces to ecosystems and is almost entirely responsible for the deforestation of the Amazon. It has even gone from being a carbon sink to an emitter recently. This is all to grow more beef. Yet people will go to a climate protest and still get a burger for lunch. Almost no one who wants to see action on climate has made significant changes to their lifestyle like becoming vegan, which is one of the easiest things you can do. You still get to eat delicious food, and enjoy it every bit as much. It just requires using different products. And the impact is massive. It's embarrassing that the largest climate movements say almost nothing about this. Nothing from XR or Just Stop Oil about this. They literally ignore the biggest impact they can have.

Hypocrisy by religious leaders bothers me the most as they claim to have a hotline to God. Not only do they engage in the wickedness they condemn, they play their flock for fools.
I dont think Ive ever felt more insulted by anyone in my entire life than by my Jewish mother. All this talk about a religious revival makes me sick to my stomach.
As a Muslim, I feel the urge to explain that in Islam we have two types of hypocrites: A true hypocrite who disbelieves in his heart yet pretends to be a Muslim (for example). A Muslim who can become a hypocrite if they display any of these three (in some verses, four) types of behavior: When they speak, they lie. If you trust them with something, they betray that trust. If they make a promise, they do not fulfill it. (In the second version) When they argue, they cross all limits of evil. The second type of hypocrisy applies to believers. Sometimes one or two of these traits can be found in a believer, and they must work on themselves. They can't allow any of these traits to persist. If a believer finds any of these traits within themselves, they are not yet considered a hypocrite, but there are traces of hypocrisy in their heart, so they need to work on it. If all three (or four) traits are found, then they have become a hypocrite. There are also many verses from the Quran and hadith (authentic sayings recorded by the followers of the Prophet, things he said but were not part of the Quran) that describe the second type of hypocrite, the believer. First of all, in the Quran on page 3, the first kind of disbelievers mentioned are the hypocrites. Both types are included (according to some Islamic scholars). There are also some verses in the Quran, for example, in chapter 4, verse 142: "Surely the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He outwits them. When they stand up for prayer, they do it half-heartedly, only to be seen by people-hardly remembering Allah at all." Clearly, we can see this as a warning to be mindful of ourselves. If you are a true believer, you will consider what your Creator thinks of you. Yet, we have this verse reminding us to be careful of our actions, as these behaviors can occur in daily life. Please keep in mind that English is not my main language, nor is Arabic. I'm not an Islamic scholar, nor am I from the Middle East. I'm just a very ill artist and poet, a Muslim, trying to fit into the 21st century. I wasn't raised as a Muslim; I became one in my early teenage years. The reason I explained how hypocrisy is viewed in Islam is because I find it very profound. I'll give you one more example from my own experience. We all know that Islam fought against the pagan Arabs who worshiped idols. Islam is very strict about art that depicts people, animals, or mythological creatures. That's one of the reasons why we don't have any portraits of our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and why it is forbidden to draw him in any way. People tend to worship such depictions. Yet, we live in the 21st century, surrounded by pictures on our phones, portrait photos on our driving licenses, passports, etc. Pictures are all around us, yet you don't see people worshiping a marketing image on the street. As I mentioned, I'm very, very ill. I live in the Balkans, I’m jobless, and I have no social income. However, I am skilled at drawing, especially portraits and animals-things that are forbidden in Islam. My health condition is so bad that if suicide were not forbidden in Islam, I would have done it long ago. So, faith means a lot to me. I’ve asked many imams and sheikhs for advice due to my social and health situation, and I’ve received many different answers. Well, guess what? I draw. Daily. I pray, and I draw. I see how my Muslim community has distanced itself from me, and I don’t receive support from them. I literally live like a hypocrite. But am I one? Well, guess what? I’m alive. So surely, I’m not. That’s just one example of my everyday struggle. There are many other situations too, but I’ve already written enough.
i think a large part of hypocrisy is the subconscious ego's protection against admitting fault. there seems to be a layer of protection in place to prevent us from noticing fault in ourselves as easily as we do in others. it could also be the other way around, that we have evolved to be more keen on judging others as a tribe species. probably a little of both.

That was a really good explanation, thank you. Hypocrisy is the one thing that triggers me. It's like a button you can press, and you get a guaranteed reaction from me. Kinda stupid but I can't help it. It's just SO infuriating. I would also add one more to your "levels of hypocrisy": The kind that continues the contradiction even when the hypocrisy gets as public and blatantly obvious as it can be *and* he's NOT punished for it by the general society. That is just beyond wrong as there the betrayal then comes from the very society you live in. That kind of thing can destroy the general trust in your fellow people, and make the very foundations of a society crumble.
I came to the conclusion (for myself) the answer was an unbalanced equation. Inference. Hypocrisy is not just an error, but a break of perceived fundamental laws. If a murderer lives next door but promises to only murder people with red shirts I can coexist regardless of how I disagree with their axioms. If someone says one thing and does another they are internally self inconsistent. This makes them a dangerous liability and triggers far more disgust than someone who you can disagree with but draw a causal path from the events through their world view into action. In short, as you mentioned here, inference. I didn't realize I despised hypocrisy till I was 30. It seemed to represent a failing of character, a lack of introspection or an ungrounded set of core axioms or beliefs. They seemed to represent something fractured and broken at the root of whatever we consider reality. I now have a lot more empathy for people who lack a certain level of introspection and am more inclined to believe that nobody wants to be the villain, so I am willing to give more rope but If someone advocates against something successfully enough to demonstrate that clear understanding of what is wrong, then person is a wild card and I will excise them from my life.
Hate to say it, but for someone over 30 you have a naivete about you. There are ALWAYS those that want power and control and will fight tooth and nail to get and keep such power. There are good people, there are bad people and there are a whole lot that dwell in the gray area between.

every single person is a hypocrite. this is not coming from a place of hurt, this is coming from a place of truth. every single bit of judgement we have towards one another is projection of parts we don't like about ourselves.

@@roberthill8797 I believe Ben Franklin created a bible that shunned the esoteric aspects of the Bible while keeping the integrity of its philosophy. Jesus taught us to avoid narcissist and find the truth for ourselves. I believe if he was just a man who didn’t do any extraordinarily feat and just died by the hands of the government, in a mortal death (like Socrates) he would still be interesting to read about. I belive they have changed the meaning of the words in the Bible multiple times when translating them to other languages to push personal narratives. It is wise to have a judging air about what you read, especially religious material. I like what you wrote.

I've started to hate hypocrisy more and more recently, being confronted with many people that practiced it. But what I find most irritating is their ability to judge others actions while calling themselves righteous. That's probably what I hate it. An hypocrite that doesn't think much of himself, I probably wouldn't mind.

You have not, as far as I can tell, contradict yourself: You were only talking about your own feelings on the matter, and not extrapolating those into moral judgements. One can argue that your stated anger is “righteous” (those two emotions are close) but I do not think that’s the case here? Can you explain why you’re a hypocrite?

But when I thought about it later on, I realized I wasn't and that lisalisa missed the point. I am judging them, yes. But I certainly do not act righteous. I mostly assume that people are hypocrite by nature and that it's inevitable that someday one may fall into this trap. It's more their behavior that irks me rather than they hypocrisy. I hope I explained myself better this time.
I think the problem is thinking of negative things as unnecessary and positive things as perfection. You can’t have one without the other. Similarly life/death are dependent upon each other. I think that the insult of betrayal without need is a more negative one that makes the betrayer a liability, a faulty part of the whole. Like pack animals that shun the injured or sick. The mental need for such deception can be seen as a sickness. Tyrants, sociopaths, psychopaths, etc all utilize active betrayal that can cause harm, making their actions criminal to the society, but we recognize that it is a sickness medically. Definitely lots of stuff to ponder thank you.

When you point your finger in judgement, point three at yourself first, I've heard it said. People seek to project their own weaknesses onto others, often subconsciously, to make themselves look better to themselves. Conscious Mind: "Look at so-and-so, that's a terrible action I would never take!" Subconscious Mind: "Look at so-and-so, I'm just as bad but I cannot cope with that reality, so I'll project that weakness onto so-and-so instead!"
I think it was a really good idea from you to talk about all these things as a uninvolved third whilst giving off the vibe that it is of utmost importance to you. Makes it very interesting and enjoyable to watch.
I know of a place that promised on a Friday that everything was going well and no layoffs were going to happen. Come Monday, a third of the employees were let go. Had a couple of friends impacted by it and a general vibe I got was the anger at being promised that everything was going to be okay. (Banger video as always!)
I've always seen you as a good friend since we met months ago, but only just discovering your channel has really made me appreciate your philosophical knowledge and develop so much more respect for you! On the subject of hypocrisy and condemning immorality, the way I see it most productive in society would be for us to condemn behaviour we view as immoral and not remain quiet about it, even if we do knowingly engage in it ourselves, while at the same time admit our hypocrisy and deeply strive to live up to the standards we set for others rather than make excuses for ourselves. That way we demonstrate our humility and acknowledge our own faults, being the example for our audience instead of putting ourselves on a moral pedestal.

Hypocrites are correct when they speak-- otherwise, they would not be hypocrites. How else would a person know when to point out another person's bad actions, if they aren't insecure about doing it themselves? This is why I do not hate hypocrites, and neither should you. They shine a light on dark things, even if that dark thing is themselves.
Or maybe you just did that one thing once where they, on the other hand, have been doing it forever. And it's only bad when someone else does said thing. It's not that we hate hypocrites it's that we hate their way of thinking and judging others.

what does the world have to do with anything? We draw conclusions about said person. It's easy to ignore someone you don't care about who's being hypocrite but not easy when it's someone close to you or has some power on you say at power or emotional power. If we want to talk about the hypocrisy on a larger scale just look at the war on drugs. It ruined and killed more people then the drugs itself. Everyone is a hypocrite but it becomes a problem when that trait starts to affect your life. And it's not as easy as to say distance yourself from these people because in a lot cases these people have been in your life for a long time or you depend on them maybe emotionally or financially or they depend on you. and I see the flaw in that too, just don't depend on others but it's really easy said than done. Hypocrites run the world and ruin lives both on large and small scale.
What you’re referring to as “hat swapping” is called “code switching” in psychology and it’s pretty ubiquitous. We all moderate our behaviour with different groups of people to fit in with the group’s micro-culture. It’s not a case of being deceptive or inauthentic, it’s more like having consideration for acceptable norms. Like, I’m not going to swear like a sailor to my grandmother, unless she actually is a sailor.

I have lived in an extraordinary circumstance for the last 5 years. I gave up my job to help my mother-in-law take care of my dying father-in-law. My mother-in-law has viewed my every action as immortal. Good or bad. But being judged as bad no matter what does liberate one to make one's moral code free from morals for appearance sake.

I just wanted to use the opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy your videos and thank you for it. Works well as podcast, is informative and not as depressing as news. A bit like the Third of Jordan Peterson without politics and psychiatry ;p And the way out of hypocrisy: Just be honest and keep working on yourself, trying to be the best version of yourself. That's the beauty of christianity: God gave us free will so we can choose to do the right thing or not to. It's our own decision and hopefully we're persons who make the world a better place. Furthermore there's Jesus who states (as you explained) that no human can be without sin. But he loves us anyway. He loves us so much, that he happily died for all our sins on the cross, promising they'll all be forgiven IF we really regret them. To really regretting them, you gotta work on yourself to never do this again and despise your deeds. And here's the beauty again: you may even fail at this. With that in mind, you can be a really honest person and REALLY grow hard since your not only breaking a promise to yourself but you also gotta tell your peers about it and get even more of the pressure to not fail again. This way the whole community profits. Perhaps not too far fetched: the (mostly christian) people on the internet, to tell you not to poison your mind and your body by watching porn (to distinguish of masturbating). It's a good deed in itself (if you believe this helps society). Since the chances of getting caught are almost at 0 we also got good chances not to break trust (yay. Learned something from you again). And after all it seems to be a pretty hard task for many youngsters and it's wonderful to admit one failed, promising to his peers to try even more and becoming a better person in this process. Being honest and trying to best your best yourself is always the best way, not only depending hypocrisy :) (JP: Don't compare to others. Only to your yesterdays yourself) Best greets!
I think with the moral condemnation of others and hypocrisy vs actually upholding moral values in a community, a good approach it the realisation that the ‘moral values’ we have are our ideal outcome to strive for and not a prescriptive set of rules we apply to others. (not the right wording but you get the idea) In this way, condemnation should instead be a reminder of the ideals we hold and a push to be better (supportive action) rather than judgement. Because in that way we are able to avoid hypocrisy by acknowledging that we don’t meet even our own moral standards but that they are still a worthy goal that we and others should strive for.
Almost every discussion I've had with a non-vegan about the topic has ended with them concluding that they're going to live as a hypocrite from that point
What were they being hypocritical about? Not everyone wants to eat only plant based, and not everyone can. This is a rather convenient conclusion when someone doesn’t want to live as you want them to.

They come to the conclusion that meat consumption is bad, but they find reasons why they don't have to comply with that conclusion, such as "I don't want to eat only plant based". The problem here is that what you want for yourself and what you want for everything affected by your actions is sometimes in conflict, like when you want to eat a chicken but you also don't want the chicken to die for your sake. > "not everyone can" Everyone I've spoken to could. There might be exceptions when looking beyond those people (like Inuit having only fish in their region), but those are irrelevant to the discussion, because they did not exist inside the group of people who I've had conversations with. Im incontinent. I KNOW I shouldn't smoke, drink, and hook up and I tell people that nobody should when asked, but I can't help myself when met with temptation. I CAN believe in a tenet of my faith and still do otherwise because I am weak yet know better.
everyone is a hypocrite with one thing or another, but there is a very special frustration at hypocricy stemming from a place of authority -breaking the very rules you make ain't gonna fly well by most people
Seeing a neurotypical and politically agnostic point of view on this was eye-opening -- I value honesty and consistency and hypocrisy breaks these. (I would not count St. Vitalis's actions as immoral because he was deceiving pimps who would have used his honesty to infringe on the human rights of others, and so who had no moral standing to expect honesty.) It had not occurred to me that what actually *bothers* most people about hypocrisy is 'claiming to be better than others based on false premises' -- the same as when someone lies about their degree or ethnicity -- because I'm not trying to sort the world into a hierarchy of who's better than others. It would be interesting to hear your take on why some hypocrites' followers *don't* care about the hypocrisy.

Sometimes witnessing the hypocrisy of others is quite gratifying because it publicly undermines their incessant self righteousness. In this case it is the self righteousness that is annoying and the hypocrisy that serves as the antidote. In the very public example of Hancock you mentioned the antidote is multivalent in that it alleviates the irritation of the doubting cynic who was able to discern mere authoritarian opportunism attempting to pass for the actions of a good shepherd (the ever-satisfying "i told you so"). For the community at large who were quite willing to succumb to said authoritarian boot strapping it serves to dispell their delusions and with some it mollifies their undiscerning order following tendencies as well as their coercive demands for conformity....hopefully. Finally it corrects the behavior of the self righteous hypocrite not necessarily because he feels guilt born out of self reflection but because quite simply he cant get away with his antics any more due to the undermining of his own public clout, you could say he has inadvertently told on himself.
I don't think it's as simple as drawing some line between condemning others and allowing social ethics to be eroded away. Most people want to be ethical people, it's not always easy to do the ethical thing, sometimes it's not easy to know what the ethical choice is. In most cases what's more effective than punishment or judgement is empathy and support to learn/do better.
It is not the hypocrisy itself which makes us so furious about the powerful preaching water to us peasants and drinking wine themselves. It is the fact that we are absolutly powerless in the face of this chucpe.

i have noticed that the embedded dynamic subtitles are very distracting for me. for me personally i prefer to focus on the speakers face or gestures, and the constant changing subtitles and especially the changing colors are highly distracting and reducing my ability to focus on the content. i suggest get rid of them, and instead use the youtube subtitle feature which is opt-in and by viewer preferences.
Another thing about hypocrisy is that it's worse than cheating: one could cheat by improving their odds unbeknownst to others. But it's another thing to actively decrease everyone else's odds, to then use that as your own headstart. What I mean by this, is that the worst hypocrites are those who impose a certain behavior on others, passing this behavior as a virtue, demanding moral efforts, only not to follow that behavior, profiting from everyone else bowing to their "law". Country's economy is going down the drain? Politician's policy: everyone needs to tighten their belt and accept austerity. It's hard on people but they'll do it if need be. If that same politician is then caught organizing grandiose parties, expensive trips, and worst of all, on the taxpayers' dime, then they more than betrayed the people: they used the people's good will and following of the policy to allow them to circumvent it completely. It's actively stepping on people's heads by getting them to give you their heads in the first place. A complete perversion of the good will of others, to purely egocentric ends.
I feel kinda neutral about hypocrisy. Sometimes people are hypocrites because they genuinely don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings. Some people are hypocrites to gain validation from other people. At the same time though, condemning people and then acting like you like them also seems cruel. It gives the person a false notion that you like them and when they actually figure out you don’t, that just hurts more than the other type of hypocrisy presented. I guess just interacting neutrally with that person would suffice, but I kinda understand that kind of hypocrisy.
7:07 It should be noted that this is one interpretation of the mechanisms involved in Game Theory, and not a reflection of its entirety or even its gist. Much of Game Theory is actually about how this strategy may initially seem advantageous to the individual but that said individual would actually be better off acting in a more cooperative manner if they are aiming for a long-term winning strategy.
I am annoyed at hypocrites simply because they are entitled they expect others to follow rules, but they don't follow them themselves. Entitled people are highly annoying and hypocrisy is that, with the bonus element of deception.
In argentina happened exactly the same thing. President Fernandez was constantly saying that he was very serious about the quarantine and that he would persecute anyone who breaks it. Then it was revealed that he made a party with all of his friends to celebrate the birthday of his wife... And much later it was revealed that he was actually beating his wife and had affairs with at least 5 women during that period.
My humble opinion, I changed. Not because I was aware of my "hypocrisy", but because I spent years being unable to be consistent with what I felt, acted, said and felt. And today it is not easy for me. I spent years in a kind of haze. I am not one to dictate the rules of someone else's game. But it's not all the same to me. I prefer to be in a safe environment. Morality is for those who look outside for validation. Inner peace, which is so hard for me to achieve and so easy for me to lose at times, is a consequence of integrity. I may be wrong, but I finally have a set of values.

Possibly some of the worst kinds of hypocrisy comes from politicians. These are people that write the laws/rules everyone else must live by while often not living by these same rules, and that can be downright infuriating at times.
Yes, hypocrisy as described in the video is bad enough, but it’s even worse the more power you actually have to affect how others behave. Sadly, and irritatingly, it’s also hugely advantageous a behavioral pattern, if you want to get a political position of all sorts: act palatable on the outside, but then do whatever behind the scenes.
Also, I’d argue there’s a bit that the video didn’t consider: the inverse correlation between hypocrisy and morality. Those who are hypocritical can continue to reap the benefits of being moral while, in practice, disregarding moral standards in favor of what benefits them, but they’re also more incentivized to argue in favor of moral standards that are unfair, untenable, or straight-up harmful, but benefit them. After all, they don’t intend to abide by them anyway. That becomes even more dangerous in the hands of someone who actually can set moral standards through their platform and the actual legal system.
Meaning hypocritical politicians are not just regular hypocrites who particularly benefitted from their hypocrisy and now get to set mandatory standards of behavior they don’t abide by. They’re also genuinely dangerous because they have an incentive to use their sometimes ample powers in order to set up rules that benefit them regardless of how much they harm those who abide by them, and can do so to a far greater extent than someone who does it overtly.
On a smaller scale, but not to a lesser degree, this applies to all figures of authority, including bosses, teachers, religious leaders, and most of all parents.

The state is the most hypocritical institution there is. The state in the UK has hydrogen bombs while at the same time punishing people for even carry pepper spray for self protection. The state in principle taxes people at gunpoint but will call that blackmail if a private citizen did the same and send him to jail for many years. The state can take a person's physical freedom from them but calls it kidnapping if a private citizen does the same thing.

Animal ag is one of the largest destructive forces to ecosystems and is almost entirely responsible for the deforestation of the Amazon.
It has even gone from being a carbon sink to an emitter recently.
This is all to grow more beef.
Yet people will go to a climate protest and still get a burger for lunch.
Almost no one who wants to see action on climate has made significant changes to their lifestyle like becoming vegan, which is one of the easiest things you can do.
You still get to eat delicious food, and enjoy it every bit as much.
It just requires using different products.
And the impact is massive.
It's embarrassing that the largest climate movements say almost nothing about this.

Hypocrisy by religious leaders bothers me the most as they claim to have a hotline to God. Not only do they engage in the wickedness they condemn, they play their flock for fools.
I dont think Ive ever felt more insulted by anyone in my entire life than by my Jewish mother. All this talk about a religious revival makes me sick to my stomach.
As a Muslim, I feel the urge to explain that in Islam we have two types of hypocrites:
A true hypocrite who disbelieves in his heart yet pretends to be a Muslim (for example).
A Muslim who can become a hypocrite if they display any of these three (in some verses, four) types of behavior:
When they speak, they lie.
If you trust them with something, they betray that trust.
If they make a promise, they do not fulfill it.
(In the second version) When they argue, they cross all limits of evil.
The second type of hypocrisy applies to believers. Sometimes one or two of these traits can be found in a believer, and they must work on themselves. They can't allow any of these traits to persist. If a believer finds any of these traits within themselves, they are not yet considered a hypocrite, but there are traces of hypocrisy in their heart, so they need to work on it. If all three (or four) traits are found, then they have become a hypocrite.
There are also many verses from the Quran and hadith (authentic sayings recorded by the followers of the Prophet, things he said but were not part of the Quran) that describe the second type of hypocrite, the believer.
First of all, in the Quran on page 3, the first kind of disbelievers mentioned are the hypocrites. Both types are included (according to some Islamic scholars). There are also some verses in the Quran, for example, in chapter 4, verse 142: "Surely the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He outwits them. When they stand up for prayer, they do it half-heartedly, only to be seen by people-hardly remembering Allah at all." Clearly, we can see this as a warning to be mindful of ourselves. If you are a true believer, you will consider what your Creator thinks of you. Yet, we have this verse reminding us to be careful of our actions, as these behaviors can occur in daily life.
Please keep in mind that English is not my main language, nor is Arabic. I'm not an Islamic scholar, nor am I from the Middle East. I'm just a very ill artist and poet, a Muslim, trying to fit into the 21st century. I wasn't raised as a Muslim; I became one in my early teenage years. The reason I explained how hypocrisy is viewed in Islam is because I find it very profound.
I'll give you one more example from my own experience. We all know that Islam fought against the pagan Arabs who worshiped idols. Islam is very strict about art that depicts people, animals, or mythological creatures. That's one of the reasons why we don't have any portraits of our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and why it is forbidden to draw him in any way. People tend to worship such depictions. Yet, we live in the 21st century, surrounded by pictures on our phones, portrait photos on our driving licenses, passports, etc. Pictures are all around us, yet you don't see people worshiping a marketing image on the street.
As I mentioned, I'm very, very ill. I live in the Balkans, I’m jobless, and I have no social income. However, I am skilled at drawing, especially portraits and animals-things that are forbidden in Islam. My health condition is so bad that if suicide were not forbidden in Islam, I would have done it long ago. So, faith means a lot to me. I’ve asked many imams and sheikhs for advice due to my social and health situation, and I’ve received many different answers. Well, guess what? I draw. Daily. I pray, and I draw. I see how my Muslim community has distanced itself from me, and I don’t receive support from them. I literally live like a hypocrite. But am I one? Well, guess what? I’m alive. So surely, I’m not.
That’s just one example of my everyday struggle. There are many other situations too, but I’ve already written enough.
i think a large part of hypocrisy is the subconscious ego's protection against admitting fault. there seems to be a layer of protection in place to prevent us from noticing fault in ourselves as easily as we do in others. it could also be the other way around, that we have evolved to be more keen on judging others as a tribe species. probably a little of both.

I have gotten into the habit of watching this channel before I go to bed and I find it incredibly helpful in sorting myself out and bringing the day to an end.
That was a really good explanation, thank you. Hypocrisy is the one thing that triggers me. It's like a button you can press, and you get a guaranteed reaction from me. Kinda stupid but I can't help it. It's just SO infuriating. I would also add one more to your "levels of hypocrisy": The kind that continues the contradiction even when the hypocrisy gets as public and blatantly obvious as it can be *and* he's NOT punished for it by the general society. That is just beyond wrong as there the betrayal then comes from the very society you live in. That kind of thing can destroy the general trust in your fellow people, and make the very foundations of a society crumble.
I came to the conclusion (for myself) the answer was an unbalanced equation. Inference. Hypocrisy is not just an error, but a break of perceived fundamental laws. If a murderer lives next door but promises to only murder people with red shirts I can coexist regardless of how I disagree with their axioms.
If someone says one thing and does another they are internally self inconsistent. This makes them a dangerous liability and triggers far more disgust than someone who you can disagree with but draw a causal path from the events through their world view into action.
In short, as you mentioned here, inference. I didn't realize I despised hypocrisy till I was 30. It seemed to represent a failing of character, a lack of introspection or an ungrounded set of core axioms or beliefs. They seemed to represent something fractured and broken at the root of whatever we consider reality.
I now have a lot more empathy for people who lack a certain level of introspection and am more inclined to believe that nobody wants to be the villain, so I am willing to give more rope but If someone advocates against something successfully enough to demonstrate that clear understanding of what is wrong, then person is a wild card and I will excise them from my life.

Jesus taught us to avoid narcissist and find the truth for ourselves. I've started to hate hypocrisy more and more recently, being confronted with many people that practiced it.
But what I find most irritating is their ability to judge others actions while calling themselves righteous. That's probably what I hate it. An hypocrite that doesn't think much of himself, I probably wouldn't mind.

But when I thought about it later on, I realized I wasn't and that lisalisa missed the point. I am judging them, yes. But I certainly do not act righteous. I mostly assume that people are hypocrite by nature and that it's inevitable that someday one may fall into this trap.

I think the problem is thinking of negative things as unnecessary and positive things as perfection. You can’t have one without the other. Similarly life/death are dependent upon each other. I think that the insult of betrayal without need is a more negative one that makes the betrayer a liability, a faulty part of the whole. Like pack animals that shun the injured or sick. The mental need for such deception can be seen as a sickness. Tyrants, sociopaths, psychopaths, etc all utilize active betrayal that can cause harm, making their actions criminal to the society, but we recognize that it is a sickness medically. Definitely lots of stuff to ponder thank you.

Welcome to Brazil: a place where hypocrisy is common and normal people just live every day in rage because of it.
I know of a place that promised on a Friday that everything was going well and no layoffs were going to happen. Come Monday, a third of the employees were let go. On the subject of hypocrisy and condemning immorality, the way I see it most productive in society would be for us to condemn behaviour we view as immoral and not remain quiet about it, even if we do knowingly engage in it ourselves, while at the same time admit our hypocrisy and deeply strive to live up to the standards we set for others rather than make excuses for ourselves. That way we demonstrate our humility and acknowledge our own faults, being the example for our audience instead of putting ourselves on a moral pedestal.

That's not necessarily true. Hypocrites can say gay sex is bad then go have gay sex. That doesn't automatically make gay sex bad or evil.
what does the world have to do with anything? We draw conclusions about said person. It's easy to ignore someone you don't care about who's being hypocrite but not easy when it's someone close to you or has some power on you say at power or emotional power.
If we want to talk about the hypocrisy on a larger scale just look at the war on drugs. It ruined and killed more people then the drugs itself.
Everyone is a hypocrite but it becomes a problem when that trait starts to affect your life. And it's not as easy as to say distance yourself from these people because in a lot cases these people have been in your life for a long time or you depend on them maybe emotionally or financially or they depend on you. and I see the flaw in that too, just don't depend on others but it's really easy said than done.

What you’re referring to as “hat swapping” is called “code switching” in psychology and it’s pretty ubiquitous. We all moderate our behaviour with different groups of people to fit in with the group’s micro-culture. It’s not a case of being deceptive or inauthentic, it’s more like having consideration for acceptable norms. Like, I’m not going to swear like a sailor to my grandmother, unless she actually is a sailor.

I have lived in an extraordinary circumstance for the last 5 years. I gave up my job to help my mother-in-law take care of my dying father-in-law. My mother-in-law has viewed my every action as immortal. Good or bad. But being judged as bad no matter what does liberate one to make one's moral code free from morals for appearance sake.

Hi, loved the video. Watching from Brazil, couldn't had come in a better time. Since friday, we were faced with the Minister of Human Rights, a man many praised, acused of sexual assault.
9:48 In other words we just like to be nosey and see if we can get the same rewards out of what someone else does/did whether it be good or bad. Sad thing about this is we don't really find life worth it unless we're get something out of it and lying can bring in more rewards than honesty.
I just wanted to use the opportunity to tell you how much I enjoy your videos and thank you for it. Works well as podcast, is informative and not as depressing as news. A bit like the Third of Jordan Peterson without politics and psychiatry ;p
And the way out of hypocrisy: Just be honest and keep working on yourself, trying to be the best version of yourself.
That's the beauty of christianity: God gave us free will so we can choose to do the right thing or not to. It's our own decision and hopefully we're persons who make the world a better place.
Furthermore there's Jesus who states (as you explained) that no human can be without sin. But he loves us anyway. He loves us so much, that he happily died for all our sins on the cross, promising they'll all be forgiven IF we really regret them. To really regretting them, you gotta work on yourself to never do this again and despise your deeds.
And here's the beauty again: you may even fail at this.
With that in mind, you can be a really honest person and REALLY grow hard since your not only breaking a promise to yourself but you also gotta tell your peers about it and get even more of the pressure to not fail again. This way the whole community profits.
Perhaps not too far fetched: the (mostly christian) people on the internet, to tell you not to poison your mind and your body by watching porn (to distinguish of masturbating). It's a good deed in itself (if you believe this helps society). Since the chances of getting caught are almost at 0 we also got good chances not to break trust (yay. Learned something from you again). And after all it seems to be a pretty hard task for many youngsters and it's wonderful to admit one failed, promising to his peers to try even more and becoming a better person in this process.
Being honest and trying to best your best yourself is always the best way, not only depending hypocrisy :)

I think with the moral condemnation of others and hypocrisy vs actually upholding moral values in a community, a good approach it the realisation that the ‘moral values’ we have are our ideal outcome to strive for and not a prescriptive set of rules we apply to others. (not the right wording but you get the idea) In this way, condemnation should instead be a reminder of the ideals we hold and a push to be better (supportive action) rather than judgement. Because in that way we are able to avoid hypocrisy by acknowledging that we don’t meet even our own moral standards but that they are still a worthy goal that we and others should strive for.
Almost every discussion I've had with a non-vegan about the topic has ended with them concluding that they're going to live as a hypocrite from that point

What were they being hypocritical about? Not everyone wants to eat only plant based, and not everyone can. This is a rather convenient conclusion when someone doesn’t want to live as you want them to.

Everyone I've spoken to has agreed with me that ethically speaking, 1. killing an animal is worse than things that they themselves sometimes even consider unforgivable (for example, hitting an animal with a hammer so it can't walk for the rest of its life), and 2. there is no substantial difference between either paying someone to kill an animal to let you eat it, or killing the animal yourself to then eat it.
They come to the conclusion that meat consumption is bad, but they find reasons why they don't have to comply with that conclusion, such as "I don't want to eat only plant based". I have been in the same situation. The problem here is that what you want for yourself and what you want for everything affected by your actions is sometimes in conflict, like when you want to eat a chicken but you also don't want the chicken to die for your sake.

Everyone I've spoken to could. There might be exceptions when looking beyond those people (like Inuit having only fish in their region), but those are irrelevant to the discussion, because they did not exist inside the group of people who I've had conversations with. Also, I've found "not everyone can" to be a generally bad talking point when talking about meat consumption, because cutting meat out of your diet is actually cheaper, at least in the region where I live. When I go shopping with friends, the most expensive item on the receipt is usually the meat that they bought.

Im incontinent. I KNOW I shouldn't smoke, drink, and hook up and I tell people that nobody should when asked, but I can't help myself when met with temptation. I CAN believe in a tenet of my faith and still do otherwise because I am weak yet know better.
everyone is a hypocrite with one thing or another, but there is a very special frustration at hypocricy stemming from a place of authority -breaking the very rules you make ain't gonna fly well by most people
Seeing a neurotypical and politically agnostic point of view on this was eye-opening -- I value honesty and consistency and hypocrisy breaks these. (I would not count St. Vitalis's actions as immoral because he was deceiving pimps who would have used his honesty to infringe on the human rights of others, and so who had no moral standing to expect honesty.) It had not occurred to me that what actually *bothers* most people about hypocrisy is 'claiming to be better than others based on false premises' -- the same as when someone lies about their degree or ethnicity -- because I'm not trying to sort the world into a hierarchy of who's better than others.
It would be interesting to hear your take on why some hypocrites' followers *don't* care about the hypocrisy.

Sometimes witnessing the hypocrisy of others is quite gratifying because it publicly undermines their incessant self righteousness. In this case it is the self righteousness that is annoying and the hypocrisy that serves as the antidote. In the very public example of Hancock you mentioned the antidote is multivalent in that it alleviates the irritation of the doubting cynic who was able to discern mere authoritarian opportunism attempting to pass for the actions of a good shepherd (the ever-satisfying "i told you so"). For the community at large who were quite willing to succumb to said authoritarian boot strapping it serves to dispell their delusions and with some it mollifies their undiscerning order following tendencies as well as their coercive demands for conformity....hopefully. Finally it corrects the behavior of the self righteous hypocrite not necessarily because he feels guilt born out of self reflection but because quite simply he cant get away with his antics any more due to the undermining of his own public clout, you could say he has inadvertently told on himself.

Every society is practically defined by hypocrisy, hypocrisy isn't a bug, it's a feature.
I don't think it's as simple as drawing some line between condemning others and allowing social ethics to be eroded away. Most people want to be ethical people, it's not always easy to do the ethical thing, sometimes it's not easy to know what the ethical choice is. In most cases what's more effective than punishment or judgement is empathy and support to learn/do better.
It is not the hypocrisy itself which makes us so furious about the powerful preaching water to us peasants and drinking wine themselves. It is the fact that we are absolutly powerless in the face of this chucpe.
I know it would be a long loooong video, or perhaps a multi parter… but I’d like to see you go through and break down “The 48 Laws Of Power” by Robert Greene. I think that book would intimately tie into this subject.

i have noticed that the embedded dynamic subtitles are very distracting for me.
for me personally i prefer to focus on the speakers face or gestures, and the constant changing subtitles and especially the changing colors are highly distracting and reducing my ability to focus on the content.
i suggest get rid of them, and instead use the youtube subtitle feature which is opt-in and by viewer preferences.

Another thing about hypocrisy is that it's worse than cheating: one could cheat by improving their odds unbeknownst to others. But it's another thing to actively decrease everyone else's odds, to then use that as your own headstart.
What I mean by this, is that the worst hypocrites are those who impose a certain behavior on others, passing this behavior as a virtue, demanding moral efforts, only not to follow that behavior, profiting from everyone else bowing to their "law".
Country's economy is going down the drain? Politician's policy: everyone needs to tighten their belt and accept austerity. It's hard on people but they'll do it if need be. If that same politician is then caught organizing grandiose parties, expensive trips, and worst of all, on the taxpayers' dime, then they more than betrayed the people: they used the people's good will and following of the policy to allow them to circumvent it completely. It's actively stepping on people's heads by getting them to give you their heads in the first place. A complete perversion of the good will of others, to purely egocentric ends.

I feel kinda neutral about hypocrisy. Sometimes people are hypocrites because they genuinely don’t want to hurt other people’s feelings. Some people are hypocrites to gain validation from other people. At the same time though, condemning people and then acting like you like them also seems cruel. It gives the person a false notion that you like them and when they actually figure out you don’t, that just hurts more than the other type of hypocrisy presented. I guess just interacting neutrally with that person would suffice, but I kinda understand that kind of hypocrisy.

Much of Game Theory is actually about how this strategy may initially seem advantageous to the individual but that said individual would actually be better off acting in a more cooperative manner if they are aiming for a long-term winning strategy.

I am annoyed at hypocrites simply because they are entitled they expect others to follow rules, but they don't follow them themselves. Entitled people are highly annoying and hypocrisy is that, with the bonus element of deception.

In argentina happened exactly the same thing. President Fernandez was constantly saying that he was very serious about the quarantine and that he would persecute anyone who breaks it. Then it was revealed that he made a party with all of his friends to celebrate the birthday of his wife... And much later it was revealed that he was actually beating his wife and had affairs with at least 5 women during that period.
Narcissists usually are hypocrites. That’s not surprising.
My humble opinion, I changed. Not because I was aware of my "hypocrisy", but because I spent years being unable to be consistent with what I felt, acted, said and felt. And today it is not easy for me. I spent years in a kind of haze. I am not one to dictate the rules of someone else's game.
But it's not all the same to me. I prefer to be in a safe environment. Morality is for those who look outside for validation. Inner peace, which is so hard for me to achieve and so easy for me to lose at times, is a consequence of integrity. I may be wrong, but I finally have a set of values.
