Thanks so much - My otherwise trustworthy 4900 has been struggling with a heatwave (and extreme drought) that we have here in South Africa... Shall try this in the early cooler hours of tomorrow morning

I had this same problem and I noticed that if I put the guides to accompany the paper during output at a higher level, it didn't do the dots.
I came to the conclusion, that the paper was blowing up and touching the head causing splashes, by putting the guides at a higher level, the paper goes straight down without being able to touch the head.

This is Jon D with Pro Digital Gear. This works great but not always the solution. You don't even need to do it over night. A few hours should no the trick. Make sure not to let the nozzles touch the paper towel. It's the gasses that rise from the windex on the paper towel that break up the clog in the head.

It sounds like your auto nozzle check or auto nozzle clean is on. Turn that off.

my way of unclogging nozzles is by removing all the ink cartridges, I filled the cartridge slot with a lot of paper towels/rags to not make a mess. Then I moved the print head to the center of the machine, I then removed the ink supply lines, I fill a syringe with my choice of cleaner that has some ammonia in it. I then backflushed with enough liquid to fill the tube and you hear liquid coming from each the cartridge slot, then "stop".
Do a print /clean, nozzle check Follow machine prompts, ie; raise/lower ink lever whatever the screen tells you. Do any or all of this at "YOUR" own risk, was it the right way? I don't know I was "not" going to take the printer head apart. I ran the machine through 7 cycles until test sheets came out with no spots or lines. Yes, it uses some ink but in my case, I had nothing to lose I got this Epson Pro 4000 for free (clogged nozzles) and it came with ink cartridges.
    Its time consuming

Do you think you can put an cleaner into a spare ink tank and run that through the printer or maybe even split the ink line that's clogged and syringe a cleaner through?
