    Excellent - this is railway history gold! Me and the wife have been walking as much of the route as is now physically possible. Only yesterday [22/05/2021] we walked the rail bed from the bridge over St Mary's Well Bay Road until it terminates and meets the B4267 Lavernock Rd. Very overgrown with trees and a bit of climbing involved getting over some of the felled ones.

    Awsome, I remember the days (early 1950s) when the engine driver would let me ride with him in the engine room of the steam train from Penarth to Alberta Road station for a quick and naughty treat. I think he fancied my mum. 🤭

    Cheers mate!! I'd go to Barry Island from 5 years old onwards from 1970 and ALWAYS wondered what was beyond the tunnel. Now I know....STUNNING! Many many thanks!

    That was a fascinating video, starting with the trip through the tunnel to Barry Pier. Although I knew about the line, I Had never seen any films of it before.
    The passenger line from Penarth to Cadoxton had closed before I went to the CEGB's apprentice training school (the former Penarth Power Station) which was situated alongside the line. When my motorbike was off the road, it was a long walk from the Penarth station. During my entire 6 months training there, I saw just one train- a class 14 hauling a brake van.

    Excellent footage. I've lived in Berkley Drive since 1969 and I do remember seeing the odd goods train which carried on to Barry before the line was torn up around 1971

    I went on a trip to Weston Super Mare buy the Cardiff Queen Paddle boat on a specail excursion from Tirphil on the Rhymney Line adn we went through the tunnel to catch the boat on the return trip we docked at the barry pier and walked up a narrow path to catch the train back home I think it would be around 1956 or so The train used the old line via sully

    Amazing footage, always wondered what the line looked like when running. I scrambled up the embankment by the bridge over the road to St Mary's Well bay a few years back, could still see the indentations on the track bed where the sleepers had lay.

    I seem to remember my father, Geoffrey Davies dragging me out of bed at around the age of four to go on the last train journey from Penarth to Lavernock/Sully. Would that memory be correct as it would have been a late evening train?

    • @karljlangford
      @karljlangford  3 роки тому +1

    Beeching cuts? There was also a line from Cadoxtan going north to Wenvoe and beyond. I could see both that line and the Sully line from my home on the Common in Dinas Powys. So sad to see them gone.

    • @karljlangford
      @karljlangford  11 місяців тому

      This line they were planning to cut before breaching. Beeching was an excuse. Land had already been allotted before closing

    Great video!! The voiceover sounds quite recent relative to the video. Did Brian film it when he was a lot younger in the 60s, then overdub the commentary recently?

    • @karljlangford
      @karljlangford  4 роки тому +1

      Yes James.... Brian filmed it on the day in 1968.... But the sound was a few weeks ago. Sorry for the sound of rain..... But yes it sounds fresh anyway. It is a ghostly message this one. I loved the footage.
