    I decided that I wanted to try to thin out my lawn before I applied pre emergent. I have issues with wash boarding when I use the reel mower if the lawn gets too dense. The lawn is currently super dense and it needs to be thinned out a little bit. The verticutting was not a huge success because I was not able to get much material removed and because the cable on the machine broke. I think that I need to try a traditional power rake.

    Great advice! Can’t wait to see how it comes out. I’ll be needing to do this before summer really hits us, to thin out the bermuda after it gets growing here.

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel  6 років тому +1

      Didn't you overseed with PRG? Is that now dead and gone?

    • @andrewp.619
      @andrewp.619 6 років тому

      Connor Ward, sadly, yes. The PRG has been scalped out and the bermuda is coming back through. I’ll be overseeding with some new bermuda varieties though so I can keep it much lower with my reel. Currently, it’s an old common bermuda variety.

    LOL, that last bit. Cows beat the goats that I used to live to, they used to get out of the fence all the time, and eat everything in sight. I was putting up some fence posts one time, and had some concrete bags on the ground, and I saw them eating the discarded bags.

    How large is your property? What's your square feet of grass area?
    None of those devices is useful for me, because my property is to large. I wish, wish, wish they made reel mowers and verticutters much wider, without costing 10s of thousands of dollars.

  • @vern2599
    @vern2599 6 років тому

    You mentioned you wanted flail blades for dethatching. They make flail blade reels that you can remove and exchange the verticut blades with. That way you will have the best of both worlds, flail for dethatching, and verricut for grooves and over seeding.

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel  6 років тому

      I was aware of that and I have looked into it. I think they are like 375$ or something crazy like that for the flail attachment. That expense is going to have to wait for now. I might rent a machine to see how it does before I buy the flail reel.

    • @vern2599
      @vern2599 6 років тому

      There is a Sunjoe electric machine with flail for dethatching and scarifier for verticacut grooves. Over $100 to 150. Not as powerful as your professional machine.

    Will Kentucky Blue grass grow well in an 8B hardiness zone?? The current grass we have is St. Augustine. But it’s the cheapest kind one can get seeing that it’s what the builders put in as our house in newly built.

      You'd be pushing your luck I would not try it

    • @scubasteve12192
      @scubasteve12192 5 років тому

      Connor Ward Gotcha. Thanks for the fast reply. Any suggestions for my climate? We have a really small yard. 30’x30’ roughly. So I would not be against re-sodding with a better quality. Even if it’s just better quality St. Augustine. I just want a nice green yard.

    • @lawnrebel
      @lawnrebel  5 років тому

      What about Bermuda? I know it can be invasive but maybe?

    • @scubasteve12192
      @scubasteve12192 5 років тому

      Connor Ward I’m sorta biased towards the texture of St. Augustine. I like the thick blades for some reason. I dunno why, guess to me it feels better under my feet. I did a very brief research session and found a short list of grasses for my area. St. Augustine being one obviously and Bermuda. Really I guess I should give the St. Augustine a chance. We’ve only been in the house for about a month or two and the grass was severely parched. I’ll give it some TLC and maybe revisit the new grass idea sometime year if it’s unable to recover. The list included Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, Carpet, Bahia and St. Augustine. Any of those you would place on the top of your list or avoid based on your preferences, knowledge and experiences?

    • @lawnrebel

      Jeremy Parker. I do not have a program. I just get what's on sale and put it down. I kind of go according to the bag rate. Sounds terrible I know but that's the reality.
