As a Black American woman, I say that it is time for us to, as much as possible, disconnect from what others say, think, feel about us. We should have been embracing our natural beauty all along, regardless of what others have to say about it. Asian youth can "afford" to experiment with styles, music , ways of dress, etc., because they can fall back on a culture and national identity that will support them regardless. Anyway, as human beings we are always affected or influenced by what other cultures offer. Whether or not Asians like or respect us more or less whether or not they straighten or "nappify" their hair is not our concern. Frankly, it's not even important. And there's more to anyone's culture than hair styles, music and food. Asians who choose to "experiment" don't really owe us anything, not even recognition. So let's keep it moving and focus on the more important work of resurrecting our Black/Indigenous cultures, and find ways to get on code with one another and treat each other with more respect.
The whole world needs to stop feeding off of black peoples energies as if they're entitled to it. Like it's a rite of passage or something. Asian people need to stop watching black people

I came to say this. That's why it's upsetting because a whole ACT had to pass in order for many institutions to "accept" our natural hair in professional and academic settings.
As a black person, this doesn't bother me. As long as they don't mock or denigrate our hairstyles, it's not cultural appropriation but cultural appreciation. This way, many black people could enjoy wearing their natural hair even more. Culture is shared as long as it is respectful.

Is discrimination about hair really still a thing? I understand a few incidents every year in the US that has most likely 360 million people. Times have changed. The people who pay to get afro hair have nothing to do with that, and most likely know nothing about it. They (just like black people wearing wigs & weave) want to have the physical features they believe will make them more beautiful - even if they are the exact opposite of what they have naturally.

Meanwhile, a Russian who lives in Berlin/Germany is attacked by black people because he wears his natural hair... he has frizzy hair similar to Bob Ross, only blonde... he didn't wear any braids or anything like that... .just the way it grows for him. Frizzy hair is rare in white people, but it does exist... at least more often than in East Asians. They pulled his hair and insulted him. If black folk were not persecuted for wearing natural hair (at least in the US) then I’d be fine with the hair (not the mannerisms). That being said, I hope those people don’t venture to the US and get themselves hurt. The other issue is, people outside of the American black community still don’t understand the culture. So they see mannerisms and such and don’t understand what they are saying and doing. There are a couple of videos here on UA-cam that illustrate this. One is a young white man that kept calling a black man the N-word. He was trying to say it the way he heard black people say it. He had adopted black culture and mannerisms while not understanding them. HEB got his butt handed to him. He didn’t recognize the body language from the black man either. Any black American watching understood exactly what was about to happen,,,just off his body language. ‘Another one is a white woman with a bi-racial son, and another white woman called the baby the N-word. Bi-racial mom, had clearly grown up around black women, she exhibited black woman, physical mannerism (no black-cent) that hold any black woman watching that she was about to hurt the other woman..and she did. White folk not familiar with these things, thunk that if they see a black woman slipping off her earrings and shoes, it’s a joke, or it’s an attempt to scare. Please know it is not. If you learn nothing else know the line and when you’ve crossed it. Black people have our own way of communicating with each other, without words in some instances that evolved out of necessity. It saved our ancestors lives. It assures us that if something pops off, we’ve got each others backs as much as we can without losing our own life. This evolved over time and remains. It’s also how we know when another blacks person may not be on the up and up. As there are just some things we don’t do, places we don’t go, behavior we don’t exhibit…ever. So know that you cannot as a none person of color, walk into the hood and fake your way through. Be yourself. Don’t try to be us.
I am honored that they want to imitate my 4C hair like I use to imitate their “silky straight 14 inch weave” back in the day when I was ashamed of my natural hair. I refuse to be a hypocrite and hate on those who had nothing to do with the discrimination I faced in the past. You can’t control what others choose to do with their hair. At the end of the day there is still a change to one's appearance, for whatever reason, so IMO there is no difference other than the feeding of the typical black woman troupes that society put on us. A lot of people didn't like Chris Rock documentary on hair but I loved it. When I saw the factory in Indian that was doing weaves, it changed my whole outlook on the hair industry. Also, back then they couldn't sell fake hair that was 4c, the asian man said nobody was buying that type of hair and his shop was in a blk community. So many nuances on this topic, but always makes for interesting discussions.
The most I will wear are braids. For black ppl in America, Europe and even the Caribbean, I understand the outrage because they have been ridiculed and forced to wear their hair straight. So they will ridicule us and then copy us, it's hard to embrace that.
I'll be honest, I've never been discriminated against because of my hair by non blacks, it was always black people who had something negative to say about black hair, for as long as I can remember. I think this "outrage" is just projection . I rock an Afro, or head wrap, everywhere I go, the more stares I get , the more stately I carry myself and could not care less, about the opinions of others. Ladies educate yourself/ learn a trade and become self employed, this way, you can wear your hair anyway you want. I get lots of compliments from non black people. Just do you. My 2cents is black people in the US was forced into wearing their hair straight. If you wanted a job, to go to school. During slavery we had to wear a hair wrap. For me I stop wearing weaves and wigs my hair is loc now. Also, to wear someone else’s hair- what energy does that hair holds. I’m good! For the people not understanding why a majority of us blk people have a problem with this is that the issue is how we always were never accepted to embrace our natural assets while those that don’t possess it always got praised for trying to don our natural assets. Listen y’all, at the end of the day if they want/or any person wants to do whatever they want with their hair, their skin, their word pronouncements, clothes, whatever,… let them. I admire so many beautiful things about so many different people and cherish differences. I would encourage anyone to be proud of who they are and their culture, but it’s ok if they want to try other things as well. We’re all human and curious about certain things. And as a Black person of almost thirty years, WHO LOVES EVERY SECOND OF IT, I’m way bigger than letting another’s actions make me feel some type of way. If a culture can be shaken by the mere actions of an individual, that’s a pretty fragile culture. Knowing that deep down inside how I feel as a Black person is way bigger than a hairstyle, an album, or some dance moves. And we’re way bigger than letting what other people do affect us. Everyone who believes that this is a form of appropriation is correct. It is also correct when people say there are inequities between how people of African descent are and have been treated when they wear their natural hair vs. when other groups do it. However, making the argument that people who are not of African descent should not wear Afro-textured hair is going to be challenging because Black men and women are buying up straight-textured bundles as quickly as they can be cut off of people’s heads. I just finished watching something that left me feeling all over the place. It's like my emotions are a mess and I can't seem to find any good in them. I also feel like I need someone who is smarter than me in the room to explain what's going on because it's hard to understand how other races can both hate and love everything about us at the same time. As a Black American woman, I say that it is time for us to, as much as possible, disconnect from what others say, think, feel about us. We should have been embracing our natural beauty all along, regardless of what others have to say about it. Asian youth can "afford" to experiment with styles, music , ways of dress, etc., because they can fall back on a culture and national identity that will support them regardless. Anyway, as human beings we are always affected or influenced by what other cultures offer. Whether or not Asians like or respect us more or less whether or not they straighten or "nappify" their hair is not our concern. Frankly, it's not even important. And there's more to anyone's culture than hair styles, music and food. Asians who choose to "experiment" don't really owe us anything, not even recognition. So let's keep it moving and focus on the more important work of resurrecting our Black/Indigenous cultures, and find ways to get on code with one another and treat each other with more respect.

Is discrimination about hair really still a thing? I understand a few incidents every year in the US that has most likely 360 million people. Times have changed. The people who pay to get afro hair have nothing to do with that, and most likely know nothing about it. the fact that there is a law in place to prevent black people to be disrcriminated against due to theri hair. because people still get jobs denied because afican hair is seen as "unprofessional" and black people are still looked down on and belittled for their hair. I share your sentiment. Witnessing others appreciate our hair and its texture brings a smile to my face. As long as it's not rooted in negativity or mockery, I see no issue. Even if it stems from hatred, I remain unperturbed, staying true to who I am and refusing to feed into animosity. Meanwhile, a Russian who lives in Berlin/Germany is attacked by black people because he wears his natural hair... he has frizzy hair similar to Bob Ross, only blonde... he didn't wear any braids or anything like that... .just the way it grows for him. Frizzy hair is rare in white people, but it does exist... at least more often than in East Asians. They pulled his hair and insulted him.

If black folk were not persecuted for wearing natural hair (at least in the US) then I’d be fine with the hair (not the mannerisms).
That being said, I hope those people don’t venture to the US and get themselves hurt. The other issue is, people outside of the American black community still don’t understand the culture. So they see mannerisms and such and don’t understand what they are saying and doing. There are a couple of videos here on UA-cam that illustrate this. One is a young white man that kept calling a black man the N-word. He was trying to say it the way he heard black people say it. He had adopted black culture and mannerisms while not understanding them. HEB got his butt handed to him. He didn’t recognize the body language from the black man either. Any black American watching understood exactly what was about to happen,,,just off his body language.
‘Another one is a white woman with a bi-racial son, and another white woman called the baby the N-word. Bi-racial mom, had clearly grown up around black women, she exhibited black woman, physical mannerism (no black-cent) that hold any black woman watching that she was about to hurt the other woman..and she did.
White folk not familiar with these things, thunk that if they see a black woman slipping off her earrings and shoes, it’s a joke, or it’s an attempt to scare. Please know it is not. If you learn nothing else know the line and when you’ve crossed it.
Black people have our own way of communicating with each other, without words in some instances that evolved out of necessity. It saved our ancestors lives. It assures us that if something pops off, we’ve got each others backs as much as we can without losing our own life. This evolved over time and remains. It’s also how we know when another blacks person may not be on the up and up. As there are just some things we don’t do, places we don’t go, behavior we don’t exhibit…ever.
So know that you cannot as a none person of color, walk into the hood and fake your way through. Be yourself. Don’t try to be us.
I am honored that they want to imitate my 4C hair like I use to imitate their “silky straight 14 inch weave” back in the day when I was ashamed of my natural hair. I refuse to be a hypocrite and hate on those who had nothing to do with the discrimination I faced in the past. You can’t control what others choose to do with their hair. A lot of people didn't like Chris Rock documentary on hair but I loved it. When I saw the factory in Indian that was doing weaves, it changed my whole outlook on the hair industry. Also, back then they couldn't sell fake hair that was 4c, the asian man said nobody was buying that type of hair and his shop was in a blk community. So many nuances on this topic, but always makes for interesting discussions.

I rock an Afro, or head wrap, everywhere I go, the more stares I get , the more stately I carry myself and could not care less, about the opinions of others. Ladies educate yourself/ learn a trade and become self employed, this way, you can wear your hair anyway you want. I get lots of compliments from non black people. Just do you. Don’t worry so much about others, or what they think, life is too short. Enjoy it to the fullest. I sometimes jokingly say to the palm colored people (if I were you, I’d wanna be me too )😬

My 2cents is black people in the US was forced into wearing their hair straight. If you wanted a job, to go to school. During slavery we had to wear a hair wrap. For me I stop wearing weaves and wigs my hair is loc now. Also, to wear someone else’s hair- what energy does that hair holds. I’m good! I only hope that we start loving our own hair, skin color, our women, our men , our elders and our children.

Everyone who believes that this is a form of appropriation is correct. It is also correct when people say there are inequities between how people of African descent are and have been treated when they wear their natural hair vs. when other groups do it. However, making the argument that people who are not of African descent should not wear Afro-textured hair is going to be challenging because Black men and women are buying up straight-textured bundles as quickly as they can be cut off of people’s heads. I just finished watching something that left me feeling all over the place. It's like my emotions are a mess and I can't seem to find any good in them. I also feel like I need someone who is smarter than me in the room to explain what's going on because it's hard to understand how other races can both hate and love everything about us at the same time.
