Originally made by the Steyr Puch company with an air cooled straight four in Austria. The name Pinzgauer is an alpine horse. The later ones, which is the one in your video is the later with the six cylinder diesel from VW. Eventually the rights to build them was sold to British Aerospace. Production was only stopped due to the advent of IAD's being used in the combat zone. The Pinz has no protection from IAD's. You are correct, the central tunnel is it's chassis. It was designed by a Mr. Ledvinka Jr. He worked for Tatra in Czechoslovakia before fleeing to Austria before WW2. His Tatra T97 was copied by Porche. The locking diffs are a work of art, I wiil see if I can find the video of one and let people know who would like to see it.
@@MrBenBitch Pinzgau is a province of Salzburg/Austria. Pinzgauer just means "from Pinzgau", and there are Pinzgauer cows and horses. The Pinzgauer vehicle is named after the horse, just like the Steyr Haflinger is named after the Haflinger horse and the Steyr Noriker after the Noriker horse.
I believe they still make them, they're still going into service with UK armed forces as a replacement for the Land-Rover now that the Defender is out of production. The Royal Navy also used the smaller Haflinger predecessor back in the '60s as they could be flat-packed which made them very convenient for stowing on-board ship...
They're cool... I've driven one several times at work. The Royal Air Force has them, we use the box-bodied version as an airfield or off-road ambulance. They're not fast or remotely comfortable so you wouldn't want to be in the back and in a rush to get to hospital! Great off-road though, lot's of fun!!
These have parts from vw and the g wagon....engine is from vw, mirrors , doorhandles, dashboard and instruments come from the g wagon. They are build as 4x4 ( 716) and like this one 6x6 ( 718)..... there were 3 different versions known as the P80 , P90 and P93 ....the P 80 was builg in Austria by steyr Daimler puch and had a 6 cyl 2.4 l turbo diesel....the P 90 and P93 was build in the U.K and have a 6 cyl turbo diesel with intercooler...the last versions have the 5 cyl 2.5 TDI vw / Audi engine......
Steyr made cars and also have produced CKD minivans for Chrysler for sale in Europe. The loops on the end of the axles are for parachute drops and tie downs.
That's the 80s diesel version. 718M. Even rarer in USA than the gas versions. It looks like it might have been one of the dozen or so used in Desert Storm by Delta Forces.
@ErikDJ123 That was my thought also. Judging by the shape of the hood and the disc brakes, it should be a 718M (series II) - starting between '86 and ending somewhere in the mid 2000s, I think. So the discs all 'round and electric winch aren't as unusual as would appear at first, what with the body looking like it was designed in the late '40s. :-)
Hey Brother, Can't wait till you come to the museum My friend, VwNut and Mustie1 Have been two times already, Where The Heck have you Been. lol Great Find. Cheers Dizzy.
Hard to see this masterpiece in such a bad condition. They getting nearly invaluable over here in Austria - even the original one's from thec 70ies / 80ies....buy it Buddie!!!
I have a Honda XR 250 Special forces Dirt Bike with the same paint. Came out of a Military sale Fort Campbell KENTUCKY. Home of Army special forces. You will not find much info on this vehicle because it was used in Top Secret operations by Delta force in Afghanistan, Iraq on deep Recon. Hidden in the day operations at night. It is Not identifiable as a US Vehicle. It was painted at the Bluegrass Army Depot near Winchester Kentucky by military contractors. The Paint color is called a discontinued PPG color called "Burnt Grass"
Pinzgauer, originally produced in Austria and based on tubular concept of drive train same (and therefore sometimes called Tatra-concept) as Mr.Hanz Ledwinka was originally designer in Tatra but was forced by communistic party to emigrate from Czechoslovakia (where Tatra trucks are made). That tubular concept is pretty tough and rigid drive train, completely sealed and bathing in oil. Bent cardan shaft? No way! So the upper shell is sitting on the frame and can be lightweight. But Steyr-Puch produced those in Austria between ~1970 and 2000 and then sold license (whole story is more complicated and described on wiki) to UK based BAE Systems. Which produced newer models 716/718 (4x4, 6x6). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinzgauer_High-Mobility_All-Terrain_Vehicle
Cool military vehicle looks to be 712M 2.5l - 2.7l in-line 4 cylinder air cooled. The M designates the body type as a soft top with rear passenger seating most likely used as troop carriers, other body variants were T flat bed carrier FW fire truck K 5 door station wagon W workshop D 4 door crew cab and AMB-S ambulance. You mentioned disc brakes so it may be a 2nd generation which was powered by 6 cylinder VW diesel. It sure would make a great camping/ exploration vehicle for you Amesie. Just don’t break it.
That's cool Amesie! I play GTAV all the time and there is one in the game you can select just like it! It can basically smash through anything!

Is that really in Plaistow, Amesie? I never knew there was another one. One of the founding fathers of the town must have been a Londoner (well, it would have been Essex back then)...
Pádraig Floyd There are lots of towns in the Plaistow area with names that are the same as English towns. Hampstead, Sandown, Londonderry. That's just a few

@@nh5er237 I know of some, but hadn't heard about Plaistow, which is of interest as it is only down the road from where I grew up and live now. Though Londonderry is an Irish city, not an English town. Interesting.
There are lots of great videos of people mud pluggin' with these things. They are absolute beasts!

Some great comments, learned a lot about this cool truck.
I would love to have a blast in one of these. Cheers man.

The sign on the ground. Could it be a "for sale" sign on the backside?
Great video ....
Look up, Pinzgauer Driveline Operation. If your interested in the locking diffs.

the air cooled got around 90 hp, the diesel ones got stadart around 115 , but easy to get them up, ours is at 160 with bigger turbo and chip
That board on the ground isn't a FOR SALE sign, is it?
Nah, looks like a political advert
Jeff Peterson Ah, wondered if it had been recycled with the back being used for a sign.

This is the diesel ... you can tell by the big radiator snout. 718M
ErikDJ123 thanks for clarifying. Makes sense extending the nose to fit the 6 cylinder.
The nose holds the radiator as these are liquid cooled and not aircooled like the older versions
Very interesting
So, is that board lying on the ground a 'For Sale' sign??
A neighbour of mine used to import Swiss Army Pinzgauers to Canada.

They are _NOT_ 911 parts. Not interchangeable. Completely different.
They have never been amphibious. Trust me
