This is when ballerinas danced ballet instead of gymnastic. Her port de bras is the supreme and vivid real heritage of Vaganova ballet school. Unfortunately, today is only about extensions, gimmicks and jumps to please the public. She is music, fluidity, expression and elegance. No one can matched her here.
💗 this is the best performance I've ever seen. I used to watch this on VHS from a library over and over again. Thank you for sharing. Magnificent! So much passion, forget over stretched extensions, this is pure.
I was fortunate enough to watch Makarova dance live twice in Toronto, in beautiful excerpt programs at the huge O'keefe Center, now known as the Sony Center. It was as rivetting watching her perform as watching Nureyev, who I saw dance around a hundred times, also in Toronto. He had an ongoing relationship with the National Ballet of Canada and I even had a conversation with him once. I realize people who he worked with experienced all facets of his unpredictable personality. As a member of the public, I got the polite, sanitized version of Nureyev. He was kind to me at the time and I distinctly recall the dazzling look in his eyes. I have never seen eyes quite like these before or since. They were the eyes of a genius.
@@neverlostforwords It truly was. As you may know when you watch truly brilliant dancers like Makarova, Nureyev, and the astonishing Eric Bruhn, who I saw dance the part of the dollmaker in Coppelia, the performances never leave you. They become inscribed in your soul. Plisetskya was sublime and Margot Fonteyn also unique and larger than life. Baryshnikov had a whipped cream elegance that was also something to celebrate. Are you a dancer or a dance enthusiast?
@@classicalaid1 Well, it's been many years since I danced (classical ballet), however I have been a keen dance enthusiast all my life . I am in Australia so have been limited by the tyranny of distance in who I've been able to see dance. You are most fortunate to have seen so many of the great dancers and have such wonderful memories to savour. On a quick search, I have a hunch that you are interested in saving the bees (am I right?) and if so, I share your interest on a far smaller scale and am doing my bit in my tiny corner of the world. Extremely beautiful!! She captured the nuances and the fluidity of her character with her great technique and arms. The corps and her partner also performed very well. Thank you, C ❤❤❤

I was there! Spectacular performance. Her standing ovation lasted at least five minutes!

It's Makarova's breathtaking soft and feminine, vulnerable gracefulness that is so captivating.
Her arms, those beautiful arms like a swan. Even some of today's dancers won't be able to match her port de bras.
