Steve, I rented King of Kong on Netflix last week and learned all about your struggle with Twin Galaxies and Billy. Keep up the practice in your garage man. My wife and I are rooting for you! I know You'll get past 1,050,000, it's only a matter of time.
Oh man...the 80s had unbelievably great arcade games! I was born in the mid-80s...and it was towards the late 80s where the more advanced arcade games came out. 2 games hold a special place in my heart: S.T.U.N Runner and After Burner (The cockpit version). I'd do anything to own a cockpit version of After Burner. Nothing can beat the cockpit version of After Burner! There needs to be an arcade revival of all the old classic games from the 80s...especially the classic cockpit After Burner.
Wonder Boy was my favorite arcade game. I may not be the world best, but I usually get a crowd around me when ever I play at any milkbar that still has it.
My favorite was Space Invaders. But I also loved Frogger on my Game Watch. I put the sound on silent and would play in church all the time...Lol... Wonder how many of you remember those...
My favorite game is Pac-Man, and I am the 6th person to achieve a verified perfect score on an original arcade unit, which I own. I have achieved this feat more than once. I have held the record for the fastest perfect Pac-Man. I am also the second person to achieve a perfect score on Pac-Man with the speed up chip(turbo). Thank you, David Race
What is unique is that back in the 70's & 80's during the prime of classic gaming, one simply couldn't download a game to a console (or even a phone). To enjoy a game, you either had to have a LOT of quarters or actually own a $2000 machine. One could get "some" relief if you owned a home console. But back then, technology wasn't where arcade quality was (ColecoVision came somewhat close). Todays technology for home consoles would meet or exceed anything that could be released in the arcade.
Phoenix was awesome!!!!! Different types of play and I love the bird waves. Not too many people remember phoenix...it was hard...very hard in the upper levels.
Tetris, Paper Boy, etc. I was born in '85 so I came to some of these games by watching older siblings play them more than just myself giving them a try, but those two were some of the greats. XD
Does anyone remember the 1984-'85 tv gameshow that was shown on ABC Saturday mornings(around 11:00am).It was like ,"Wheel of Fortune" & "Who wants tobe a Millionare".The host would ask players(3 of them)questions and they play arcade games. The last 2 would face off eachother at the end and the last player would play an arcade game for a higher score.
I was born in the early to mid 16-bit era (SNES and Genesis) so I love games of all ages! Even though the graphics may be better today I still think the gameplay holds up well. Especially in Shigeru Miyamoto (donkey kong, mario bros, etc.) games.
I remember Star Castle from the arcades. Man, that was a great game!! It's cool they have all of the "museum" games for the new systems, but I'm annoyed that the controllers don't have the same "touch"as for instance, the Atari paddles.
I liked this interview. That referee guy from The King of Kong has the right idea on games, they are covered in graphics et cetera rather than pure gameplay.
First game I played was Jazz Jackrabbit. My favorite arcade game is Time Crisis 2, but that isn't really that old, so I'll have to go with Turtles in Time.
Depends on how classic you want to go. The first arcade machine I played heavily was Mortal Kombat II. But I still say the best "classic" game is by far chrono trigger. Unless you consider pre 2000 classic, then its final fantasy 7
Only an hour? hehe, I remember 3 guys locally that attempted the Q-bert and Defender world records and they had to play for like 30+ hours to get close. I played Galaga for 12 hours straight once (usually the no-fire exploit though). Fun times...
Well my top favorites would be MsPacman, Galaga, Asteroids, and Mr. Do's Castle. Some games I used to play a lot of but don't love that much anymore are scramble, moon cresta, and xevious. I wish some of those people who wrote some of the early games, would release source code, and/or write some books or articles about their game design ideas and how to write games. I'd love to design and code my own 70s/80s style video games!!
@Luigi84289 (1st of all, thanks 4 your reply)."Starcade?",just looked it up(don't remember if that was the name of the gameshow, but I think it was the spinoff of that show,"The Video Game",aired in 1984 on regular network tv.I was only a 11-12 yo kid watching it).If "Starcade" was shown back about 10 years ago during the early 2000's,it must of been repeats 'cuz the show originally aired back in 1982-'83(anyway,thx).
It bothers me how a number of people think today's youth is ignorant to old school games... Just because we enjoy recent developments doesn't mean we don't like the old... At least this somewhat points that out
well sf3fan a man after me own heart, did u also play rastan saga, trojan, jackal, iron horse, rock n rage.i did rygar in my local arc an is my all time fav arcade title.
Difficult.... i think i played LSA squad the most. But its more then 20 years ago. It was the best çommando'' like game ever. I wonder if it still is. Its a bit of an unknown game, but i would love to play it once again. Please respond if you know howto.
My Favs are...Ms Pac man,san frisisco rush,super mario bros 1,and 3,Fatal run,pong,sonic on the genises,Track Mania Sunrise on the PC,Sparkster,Top Gear Rally,Chu Chu Rocket,Toy story 2(nintendo 64 version),Out run,pokemon red&blue,pokemon silver&gold,and pokemon snap!!!Those are my favorite games of all time!!!!!!!!!!
These games are about pure gaming skill, any old noob can complete a modern game, even on hard difficulty. But only 2 people have completed pacman (reached the kill screen)
I wish Xbox Live would get these games: QUARTET from SEGA, Kings Quest, Torrin's Passage, The Balck Cauldran, and more point, type, and click retro games. If they did it with Lucas's Pirates game then they can do it with those. Quartet was an action game though with a rad soundtrack. Oh, CONGO BONGO original arcade would be a fun release too. But for real low cheap Microsoft points since it's such a short game. APB was also an awesome Midway arcade police game.
You are confusing different inventors and games. Tennis for Two was created by scientist William Higginbotham. Space War (1962) however was created by students. Two other early games are OXO from 1952 and a missile simulator game created in Sweden by SAAB for military demonstrations.
My first console was the sega megadrive(2) so my favourite games were streets of rage and paperboy, I didnt play stull like pac man and galaga til alot later on and I loved them, ASTEROIDS FTW
I like to play an intense game that challenges my speed and reflexes...not my ability to be impressed by graphics, remembering what combination of 18 buttons to push or watching the movie storyline. Classic games RULE!!! NO pause or saves allowed!!!
i was born in the late 80s so i can't say i grew up w/ the classics, though i would have to say galaga's my favorite of them all. BUT i grew up w/ street fighter, super mario, and mortal kombat ^_^
Donkey Kong is so sexy. Sadly the first time I ever played Donkey Kong was in Donkey Kong 64 where you unlock the game. I had seen it before, heard about the game many times. But I had never actually played it. But I soon thought that Donkey Kong was WAY better than Donkey Kong 64.

"Pac-man's the best because you get points by eating"
LOL
Battlezone and Asteroids. Both used vector displays rather than raster. And Battlezone was one of the first to offer a 3D 1st-person view environment.
Leah D'Emilio.. Woah.
Oh man...the 80s had unbelievably great arcade games! My dad bought one a couple of years, I have one in my house, which I used to play a lot, now I occasionally play it with my cousins.
Woa, that footage of Steve playing DK freaked me out for a second. At first, I didn't realize they were playing the video in reverse. 4:19
Wonder Boy was my favorite arcade game. I may not be the world best, but I usually get a crowd around me when ever I play at any milkbar that still has it.

i love the tune thats played in the end, could someone tell me which game this is from, was it galaga?
Tetris, Paper Boy, etc. I was born in '85 so I came to some of these games by watching older siblings play them more than just myself giving them a try, but those two were some of the greats. XD

warrior needs food BADLY
Tetris never gets old, no matter how many times I play it.
That's on my retro top 10!
I remember Star Castle from the arcades. Man, that was a great game!! It's cool they have all of the "museum" games for the new systems, but I'm annoyed that the controllers don't have the same "touch"as for instance, the Atari paddles.
Super Mario Bros on the NES was my favourite.
Awesome video guys.
5/5
very cool, nostalgic video!
0:15 what's the 8 bit gaming music? Title?
omg! totally forgot about that one, haha, wow that's a rare one
I liked this interview. That referee guy from The King of Kong has the right idea on games, they are covered in graphics et cetera rather than pure gameplay.
Is that Morgan Web at 1:03 ??
Some of my favorites include Time Killers, Burger Time, Joust, Final Fight, and Saturday Night Slam Masters.
One of my favorites was Phoenix. Cool game back in the day!
When I used to go to the Arcade, my Buddies and me would go to the back room and play the game: "who can hold the smoke in longest."
First game I played was Jazz Jackrabbit. My favorite arcade game is Time Crisis 2, but that isn't really that old, so I'll have to go with Turtles in Time.
Not many comments with Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. PAC-Man FTW.
well one of the last arcade ones Cadilacs and dinosaurs is my favourite :) its not that old but still im loving it
Depends on how classic you want to go. The first arcade machine I played heavily was Mortal Kombat II. But I still say the best "classic" game is by far chrono trigger. Unless you consider pre 2000 classic, then its final fantasy 7
Going to arcade in the 80's and blowing your $10 allowance on games is the greatest memories a kid could have!
Only an hour? hehe, I remember 3 guys locally that attempted the Q-bert and Defender world records and they had to play for like 30+ hours to get close. I played Galaga for 12 hours straight once (usually the no-fire exploit though).
Fun times...
I was not born in the time of the arcade but I have found ways to fall in love with the classic my favorite it Robotron2084
Donkey kong, Centipede, Asteroids, Pacman and 1942.
Those are like the only ones I play.
cool, I got Namco Museum Collection for PSP and it has Galaga, Ms.Pacman, and Pacman+some more.
Battlezone and Missile Command, definitely!
You're my hero.
The first console game I ever played, was Sonic 2 on the Sega Genesis. First computer game I can ever remember playing? Rocket Ranger, for the PC.
King of Kong is a great movie, highly suggested.
I enjoyed Joust, Defender, missile command, but my favorite i would say was Tempest
I didnt grow up in the 70's or 80's but my favorite arcade game from the 90's happens to be Street Fighter II
My favourite classic arcade game is Galaga I just love it.
Same here. Sonic was like the best. First computer game I played was Highway hunter
pringles and mountain dew? sounds like something else is going down at that party.

The Monkey Island Series.....All the games were outstanding.
Huh? That was Galaga that they showed. Look again.
play it and you'll know. I didn't even watch the anime, I only played the game and it still appealed to me.
Outrun, Afterburner II..
There it is..
I went all the way to level 102 without losing 1 ship (yes, the bugs were firing...i didn't use that cheap trick to make them stop firing.)
Difficult.... i think i played LSA squad the most. But its more then 20 years ago. It was the best çommando'' like game ever. I wonder if it still is. Its a bit of an unknown game, but i would love to play it once again. Please respond if you know howto.

dude we're talking ancient 70's-80's games, not the 2000 range. I'd have to say my fave was asteroids.
These games are about pure gaming skill, any old noob can complete a modern game, even on hard difficulty. But only 2 people have completed pacman (reached the kill screen)
Q*bert. I always had the high score. I also played this game called Ladybug, but it's been too long and I don't remember much about it.
Starwars
The vector graphics space sim, with the sit down cabinet.
THE best classic arcade game.
Check out the iPhone app 80s Arcade Games! It's in the Top 50 Entertainment apps!
Defender,Galaga,Joust and Tempest.
Almost forgot... SHINOBI!!! My all time favorite. I played that shit for hours!!
I wonder if he beet his high score again that day?
I did also grow up with sonic, street fighter, mortal kombat, lemmings, sensi soccer etc.
For me it's a toss up between 4 games: Tempest, Centipede, Discs of Tron, and Star Castle
You are confusing different inventors and games. Tennis for Two was created by scientist William Higginbotham. Space War (1962) however was created by students.
Two other early games are OXO from 1952 and a missile simulator game created in Sweden by SAAB for military demonstrations.
On a side note my favorite ARCADE game is Galaga or Defender.
centipede,ms pac man,missile command,donkey kong,dig dug,tempest and rygar are my favorite games
it may not be much of a clasic, but ive gotta say that Zork grand inquisiter is the best
I can EASILY get that enjoyment out of classic games such as FF VI, or Illusion of Gaia. Who are you to tell us that old games aren't good anymore?
That movie was awesome.
My first console was the sega megadrive(2) so my favourite games were streets of rage and paperboy, I didnt play stull like pac man and galaga til alot later on and I loved them, ASTEROIDS FTW
"Ms Pacman... She has a bow". I'm not sure if that chick really knows the difference between that and Pacman.
Super Donkey Kong? Huh?
super mario world will always be my favorite game
For a girl I was pretty good at Galaga! At a local kids pizza place they have it and I play it every time we go with our kids.
I like to play an intense game that challenges my speed and reflexes...not my ability to be impressed by graphics, remembering what combination of 18 buttons to push or watching the movie storyline.
Classic games RULE!!! NO pause or saves allowed!!!
Arcade favorite: Galaga
year 2k favorite: Super Smash Brothers Melee
Gameboy Advance favorite: Megaman Battle Network 3
Recent favorite: Soul Calibur 4
Japan Only!: Naruto Ultimate Ninja Accel 2

I think my fav would probably be Gallaga..
I haven't played those games too much...but I'd probably go with Tetris.
i'm generation 16bit. 8bit gameplay + better graphics/sound = epic win.
favourite games are zelda - a link to the past, chrono trigger, smw.
Galaga/Pac Man machines are awesome!!! :D
Dig Dug and this other weird game where you have to make shapes out of atoms, its sweet...
I put many quarters into 1942 and the original Gauntlet.
tetris ,
house of the dead,
mortal kombat,
and does pinball count?
its only a matter of time steve :)
i was born in the late 80s so i can't say i grew up w/ the classics, though i would have to say galaga's my favorite of them all. BUT i grew up w/ street fighter, super mario, and mortal kombat ^_^
Missile Command gets my vote!
Rampage and Primal Rage
I can't get past the first stage in Donkey Kong...
i like pacman, asteroids, space invaders, frogger, and a bunch more.
