My Drone Cinematography MasterClass is FINISHED!
In this episode I mention the safety feature DJI added to all their drones where the motors will all shut off when the drone is turned upside down. I found an official DJI statement suggesting we don’t do it frequently because it puts stress on the motors:
DJI STATEMENT:
“However is not advisable to do it very often. The propellers are still running quite fast even and by turning the drone you force the inertia momentum of the propellers. As a result there is a stress on the axes of the motors and although this is certainly not a big issue if you do it a few times (when there is an emergency for example), that could and will increase the wear and tear of the axis. Better landing normally or, if you already like landing on your hand, pull down the propeller’s speed to complete stop instead of turning the drone.”

Best thing to practice with your drone is to once launched is to fly the drone around 50 to 80 feet away from you, stop the drone and turn it to you and fly towards you slowly move the drone to the left and to the right. Do this enough to get a muscle memory of flying.
I like that you explained not to turn the drone over to stop the props. I see so many videos of others saying to do that .
absolutely - it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see and feel the forces acting on those delicate little arms, rotors and motors...

I’m never near a flat surface when I send the drone…even for a landing pad to be set. My hand has been my pad since day one. First time is scary, second time not so much, now is like changing socks.
And yes, when it takes off, the pitch changes immediately (nose down). So that little move was the one that scared me the first time and my reaction was to try and catch it but at the last fraction of that second I stopped and let it do its thing

I havenn't mastered the hand launch but I was able to land in my hand 2X this weekend. Getting The propellers to stop is another story.
yes i know what you mean. there are some time where it occasionally takes a few extra seconds for the props to stop.
Hand launching is something I haven't really done yet. Hand landing yes....good to know about the grab and flip...I will no longer be doing this.
So Ted, check this out. A few weeks ago, I received a phone call from the Forest Service Law enforcement division. Apparently someone turned me in for flying my drone in the wilderness area....and being a guide. (Hahahahaha! Me a guide.) The officer seemed annoyed he even had to call me...but he was doing his due diligence. Basically, I let him know that I get right up on that Wilderness Boundary and launch and flyover. Which as u know is totally legal . I explained I have never launched or landed in the wilderness areas. I also explained if he goes through my 2023 Playlist that I was only in the wilderness area 3 times this last season. The reason being, that I want to be able to use my new tool. The officer was totally cool. Of course me being the youtuber I am told him to like,subscribe, comment and tap the notification bell. He got a good chuckle out of that.
The reason I'm relaying this story is that we might not be doing something wrong, but an uninformed viewer may think we are breaking the law and turn us in, not a big deal if we didn't break the drone law...but just a good example people are watching and ready to pounce.

Nice tips, Mr. Moneymaker. 😉 One of the reasons I will occasionally hand launch is when there really is no suitably clean, flat surface to launch from. The best way to hose up your motors, second to crashing, is to launch / land in dirt or sand. That stuff gets everywhere. Plus you run the risk of dusting up the lens and ruining potentially great video with dust spots. Sometimes I will launch from my drone case. Re: hand landing, I always do that and use the open palm method. Edited update: I confirmed that you have to press down on the joystick to get the drone to land once your palm is recognized and my comment around the hand landing in Sport mode was BS. The Mini 3 Pro will recognize your palm for landing in Sport mode - for those of us that forget to change out of Sport mode when landing. 😮

yes exactly! i once landed kinda near beach sand in a parking lot….and it kicked up some sand. not good. i remember that one of the first times i realized the value of hand launch/land.

Hi Ted! Merry Christmas! I was at the Garden City Inn, Garden City Beach, SC hand launching my Mini 3 Pro with my left hand from the 4th floor balcony facing the beach. 11mph wind w/ 21mph gusts. Just like you said, the drone pitched while moving forward, and the RR prop cut the boney side of my knuckle. blood dripping everywhere. Had to let the drone hover while I taped a tissue around my thump. So, take it from me. The Mini 3 Pro can slice you! 🤔
Great tutorial for those who might be hesitant to hand launch/catch. I recently threw a small strobe on the bottom of my Mini 3 using that click-lock velcro stuff and it's amazing! Not only does it help me see the drone in pretty much any orientation, but it serves as a great little hand-hold for catching the drone, and it keeps my fingers pretty far away from the props. You just have to make sure you follow all the tips you mentioned, especially the landing ones. Maybe sometime you could do a tutorial on advanced hand launching and catching techniques. The one time I did it from a boat, almost all the things you said could go wrong did go wrong. Thankfully, my Air2 didn't end up in the water, but at the price of some skin off my thumb's knuckle! The only time I've ever used that emergency shut off method! ;-)

hey buddy. its a pretty useful skill to have. I would recommend to cautiously practice it. I was just at the beach and there really wasn’t a safe place to land on the ground. Even the parking lot had some sand which would get kicked up upon takeoff & landing. Don’t want sand in the motors.

I’ve just recently started launching and landing by hand. Made a boo boo by leaving the Air 3 in normal mode instead of switching it into sport mode launching from a banka boat in the Philippines. It launched and ran into the cloth top. I was so lucky. Could have easily been in the South China Sea instead!
I was recently in NM with uneven, rocky terrain and couldn't find a flat spot to launch my mini 3 pro so I had to do my first hand launch and catch. The launch was easy but the catch was a bit nerve wracking. It took me a few attempts but ended up successful. The second flight was much easier. 🙂
yes it quickly gets easier after the first few attempts and the nerves dissipate. Ah man lucky you!…..I’m super eager to drone in NM. Tag me in your footage, would love to check it out.

Your tip @ 05:15 can really come in handy. When I first started hand launching I was holding the drone a bit too tight and the rotors started spinning up like crazy...the more they spun, the tighter I gripped for some (stupid) reason...luckily I recalled the emergency shut off method and was able to get things under control.

Good tutorial 😊 If l have a flat ground clean of debris, l usually take off from the ground, but if not then l hand launch. No matter the situation l would say that l hand grab 95% of the time. 😊
The last drone I owned had 9" props and a kk2 flight controller I could barely master lol. You knew when you'd caught a finger tip.

Good pointers. I launch and recover my Mini 2 from my sailboat, sometimes while sailing or moving under motor power. I always pinch launch and land. Practice, practice, practice, and know when to hand launch and fly, or when not to.

We're full time live-aboard sailors, so it's weird being on land. Excellent explanation and best practices, Ted! ✨👍🏻Hand-launching and hand-catching were giant leaps for me, especially in some conditions (sailboat, beach, snow) when the landing was difficult. There is even an emoji for that💁🏻
I think it's my eye sight that I would fear damaging the most. Launching above eye height seem more sensible
Good video! I'm almost always hand catching (camera toward me - no problem if you're used to it), but seldom hand launch. It's mostly because I can grab the hovering drone to land, but launching it involves handling the controller.

I fully agree, I use hand launch/land with the Mini 2 & 3 any time I don't have a solid surface like concrete or a wooden table to land on. Yes, I have a landing pad but to be honest it came as part of a combo kit but I have never used it. The same goes with landing gear extensions which were also part of a combo kit, never used them as if there is a situation where they might be useful I will hand launch/land. This means 2 less things I need to carry with me. 🦘😎👍
Thanks Ted - it never does any harm to remind fliers of the basics of drone flying. I find hand catching really helpful in cases where there are a lot of obstacles around and I don't want to turn off obstacle avoidance; it's all to easy to overlook the need to turn it back on ! Couldn't help but notice that you're in Cine mode for the demonstrated take-off - is that your go-to mode close to home ?

The emergency propeller stop function will work unless you are in Sport mode. In Sport mode the propellers will keep spinning even if you turn your drone. At least, that's the way my Mini 3 works 😉
ahhh i didn’t know that. Turning upside down in Sport mode does not stop the props?! wow. Thank you for sharing. I wonder why DJI did that?
@@TedNemethyeah I don't know why that did it that way and I found that the worst way when I hand landed my Mini 3 and tried to stop it.. Well, it didn't stop and I had to stop it the "right way" using the joystick.

@@TedNemeth No problem! Your video was informative and went through the basics very well. The good news is that many DJI drones allow you to turn off the bottom sensors making it easier to hand catch.
My only crash with the mini 3pro was during a hand catch. The wind caught the little fella and he hit my finger then tumbled to the ground smashing a front sensor. I still hand catch
When launching or landing, ALWAYS lift your hand above your head.
No facial reconstruction concerns.

I absolutely LOVE the S5ii. It truly is the best video camera I’ve ever used. Honestly I don’t do anything special with the camera. Basic 24p 4k. I record in VLOG and have the built in LUT that auto converts the footage back to Rec709. I don’t have any videos about using it. Sorry brother. Did you buy one or going to get one? @@DRobertson725
@@TedNemeth I bought one and I love it as well... coming from the GH5 which was also a great camera but I needed the better autofocus of the S5ii I am just in the learning mode of these cameras... also just moved up to the DJI Mini 4 Pro Plus from the DJI Mavic 2 Zoom which is how I came across your great channel...

Eh. Who crowned You to be the king of hand launching and landing?
As the lever for ascending is situated on the left side of the controller using the right hand as the launch pad and the left hand to quickly add some height works well. Then both hands are free to handle the controller.
The same goes for landing.
Turning the sencitive gimball away from You, not in contact with the hand is recommended. The same goes for landing. Mind the gimball!
Taking off, and landing from/to the hand with the Mavic 3 Pro was recently used due to too much snow on the ground.
Bring the drone down and "park" it at a suitable altitude and position. Then approach the drone from below with the right hand. Order landing using the left hand and watch the hand relative to the drone. Landing a Mavic 3 Pro in the hand without even grabbing it is no problem. Use a session for just exercising hand launching and hand catching.
Crashing Your face? Are You serious? That kind of killing wife was dismissed a long time ago...
Satellites.... Fully agree. Home point is also practical to establish...
A slight grip when taking off, yes. Just remember dropping the grip when the props start to pull.
Time 04:50. Full points! No drama needed.

@@TedNemeth Not flattering but what You show follows what most other Tubers have shown regarding hand action for consumer drones and it works fine for none professionals consumer droners.
Oh My God do I have stories.... like that time I was flying during my first month and tried to hand land an air 2s while the tracking feature was still locked on me.... why is this important you might ask? the drone wouldn't turn off by flipping it over on its backside! I have pulled this maneuver over 100 times since but never when the computer is thinking about something/anything...you will not survive. Have you ever tried removing a battery from a drone that is trying to kill you while in your bare hands.... i did the first month. that was fun... (I think i already told you about the bee stuck in my obstacle avoidance sensors... i had to fly 1000 feet backwards to my home point in reverse - also fun) I do remember 2 bloody finger landings, but have blocked out why... methinks more therapy is needed. (arial drone therapy of course)

hey Ashley. Yup it definitely has its risks. I hope the tips i learned help others who are wanting to learn the hand launch.
Hand landing easy, hand launching not easy and the only and first time I tried it the drone ended crashing down a cliff face as it did not have sufficient power applied. Big problem to retrieve it, so decided never to hand launch again.

Another important tip: Do NOT try to hand launch/land drone very close to shore! 😄
