This is an excellent example of Conan as a host - He found a way to keep her comfortable and yet join in all the same.
She just took over the room and kept it all the way through and i love it
Absolutely! I was like: "Whoa ... okay!"
She’s so beautiful here. Love how animated she can be and how charismatic she is as well. 😁 I virtually met her once. One of the best moments in my entire life. Love how she took over the conversation and asked me about myself.
“A cross between a munchkin and Katherine Hepburn on speed” - For anyone studying the history of the internet, this was what online insults were back then.
So unfair because she was so like Hepburn and it should have been the ultimate compliment
@@Dancestar1981 actually she is not so like hepburn. she ist kate mulgrew. no need to compare her with others.
🤣🤣🤣 ...wait, they had the internet in 1995?! Lol, jk
@@juu2356 They have a similar tonal quality. She was proud of the comparisons to Katherine Hepburn and played her in a 1 woman Stage Play. Incidentally, I thought she sounded more like Hepburn when she wasn't trying to, but she's fabulous either way.
Back when celebrities actually took them seriously
She's such a classy woman I can't-
"They printed in .. punch it into the internet" That's how ppl first define social media.
I'm surprised they were calling it "the internet" in this clip and not "the world wide web"!
Kate ate Conan alive in this interview, I love her.
Conan: What makes you qualified to be a starship captain?
Kate: I'm the oldest of 8 kids and had to check on them every day to make sure they are breathing.
Me: What made any other starfleet captain qualified?
She's gorgeous and charming! Very good Irish dancer too - impressed! I used to do it myself and it takes a ton of energy and precision. I wish Conan wouldn't talk over the top of her though
She has some kind of old school transatlantic former smoker's voice and it's doing something for me.
Same 😩
Thank you for finding a way to describe her voice (I agree with you). I've loved it since I first heard it. If you like her now, it just keeps getting more gravelly (and deeper somehow but still warm and not raspy) as she ages. E.g. if you check her out in things like Star Trek Voyager, or other interviews ... even more yes.
smoking did have a lot of benefits
"punched it in on the internet"

Mulgrew rocks. Saw her perform in a wonderful play a couple of winters ago, "The Half-Life of Marie Curie." Brilliant work, as usual.
She is delightful. Voyager was great, naysayers be damned
My fave Star Trek series. Always found TNG kind of boring in comparison.
I enjoyed Voyager, but I felt it had a lot of missed opportunities. Was especially disappointed with the abrupt ending. They spend all this time doing adventures of the week, only to get to Earth in the last 20 seconds of the episode. Wasn't really any buildup, they were just there because they had to be, the series was ending.
@@BradTheAmerican I agree the end was a bit strange, but overall I really liked the series and enjoyed the characters
@@BradTheAmerican the endgame novel series does a good job of tidying up a lot of the mess the ending left
Of all Star Trek captains I would want to serve under her
“A cross between a munchkin and Katherine Hepburn on speed.” Yeah pretty much ). I love her
There is a reason why she was called that - in PAL regions (everywhere except North America & Japan), the different frame rate means US television programmes run slightly faster, with the audio at a higher pitch. A good broadcaster will pitch shift to down slightly to compensate, but if they didn't, then anyone watching Voyager would hear Kate Mulgrew speaking at a higher pitch, she with a faster delivery.
I find that to be accurate! :)
@@boblowes And THAT must be the source for alot of tapes/dvds , as like on "Cheers" episodes, Ted Danson has a case of the "Chipmunks", that novelty records from the '60s. Also affects Mike Brady on Brady Bunch dvds. HATE this crap. Or could be they used as source the sped up eps from syndication where they squeezed in more commercials.
God, Kate Mulgrew is such a fantastic human being! What a gift to be alive at the same time as such a fantastic person! I loved the freeform conversation - felt completely off the cuff!
When she said “No! What is he doing” I burst out laughing.
I like that their conversation is free form, unlike today they have everything pre-interviewed to death; at least here they break the 4th wall and have fun with the prep
I don't know her but I find her so charismatic here.
You may have seen her on Orange is the New Black. She plays the tough Russian woman called Red. It's hard to believe but it's true.
She was Captain Janeway is Star Trek: Voyager.
Watch Star Trek Voyager on Netflix, you'll love her even more.
@@AlanHope2013 Holy crap, that was her?
@karva masi Funny, Conan looked as though he had a grand old time. She only did what many male guests do. It's a lively conversation between two very intelligent people.
Kate was quite the babe in the day!!! Loved her on Voyager!!!
Being 100% Irish-Roman Catholic and the eldest myself I can definitely relate to what she said. When the number of kids is large enough the oldest kids get recruited to take care of the younger ones. Kate acted like a big sister when she finally started dancing to get Conan on the right track.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I wish Kate Mulgrew would be on Star Trek TV again! I really miss her in that TV show! I want Conan back on TV too! He was very witty and entertaining and he could get his guests to really open up and talk freely! Both of these people are really good entertainers! Bring them back!
This was veeeery lovely conversation, not an interview. Loved it
Nobody could have done a better Janeway. Kate just radiates charisma everywhere she goes like a photon torpedo!
The sophistication of Hepburn, I do hear it but it's lovely
This is a good introduction for me - Kate is witty and charming. Sadly I'm quite a bit younger than most people who genuinely know her. But she's a star - that much is obvious. I mean a brilliant person.
That doesn’t matter I was only introduced to her work in 2009 for the first time via Dragon Age then I had major binge watching to catchup on most of her work
She has the most beautiful smile!
She does
Loved this. I met her two weeks ago and she is such a lovely and well spoken soul.
Kate is Pure class
The "Internet" was mainly dial-up back then. Not much in the way of social media mostly BBS and Usenet. The web was still in its' infancy. There wasn't even Google back in 1995, only a few search engines like Yahoo and Webcrawler. Mulgrew had to look hard to find stuff on her.
"Those vicious nerds!" 2:08
She's a fantastic conversationalist!
Captain Janeway just chillin on the show😄
Ahh the beginning of trolling on the internet.
She needs to be on his podcast.
They have the same hair, I dig it
theyre both american but still so typical Irish. she effortlessly dominates, he's scrambling for dear life 😄
the whole scene seems very Irish
love her
Wasn't expecting Captain Janeway dancing with Conan.
Omg when he marches over and picks up Frank 😅
WOW Mulgrew's dancing jig is awesome in that suit!
Thats why Janeway is the Captain
So interesting to hear how people said "internet" back then. It was spoken almost like two separate words.
It was new back then, the middle east and Africa didn't even have it yet.
i love her
Great actress!! Have watched ever since she was on Cheers when she played Sam Malone’s politician girlfriend!!!
This interview aged better than most.
Love those two together!!!
She was fantastic as Capt. Janeway. Voyager is my 2nd favorite tied with Deep Space Nine. Next Generation #1 of course!
This has to be the first time Andy confesses to being a Swedish-German, way before he told Norm Macdonald.
It's amazing how well spoken celebrities were, and only up until fairly recently. Also she has a touch of the trans-atlantic accent. Very nice.
She looks amazing
episode 392. Sketches include: Staring Contest, 30 Years from Today. Kathleen Turner was promoting Indiscretions on Broadway. The musical guest was Suits.
they have great rhythm back and forth
I don't know whom Conan was dating in 1995, but Coco never met his wife until 2000.
Yes, of course, but I'm pretty sure he dated a few women before meeting his wife. Probably not big stars, perhaps some writers or even people outside the showbiz.
I miss the old conan and the old set in the 90s where the set, or the camera shot, is small, and there are a lof trinkets everywhere.
Absolute legends!
She did a traditional Irish jig no arm movement really well !

I went out with an Irish girl once. She had 4 brothers. Her name was Mary Margaret O'Brien. Her four brothers: Mary Margaret Jim O'Brien, Mary Margaret Mike O'Brien, Mary Margaret Tony Obrien, Mary Margaret Louie O'Brien. Let's just say, the boys had issues.
I would have never spoken to my parents.
she was 40 years old here, looking really good
big families in Ireland were the result of lack of contraception at the time, (it was deemed illegal from 1935 til around 1980) and of course alcohol helped alot 🤣🤣🤣
God, I miss the 90s!
The swedish german 😂😂
She’s so beautiful
Thank God for strong women! 💪 👧
Funny back then- only "viscious nerds" were on the internet. lol
Captain Janeway!
Good ol '90s.. two towers were intact, Diana was alive, no Covid.things were different..I wanna go back to that time
She was 75% alive during the 90s.
The towers were bombed, Diana was miserable, and remember E. coli?
@@douglaskalberg8899 other that Diana being debatable, non of this was a thing in the 90’s, your age is showing.
The two towers from Lord of The Rings? Or did you mean WTC's TWIN towers?
I wasn’t born in the ninety’s but it really did seem like a simpler time. Kind of like a ignorance is bliss kind of thing. Everyone (usually) is now so self aware and constantly thinking about all the issues that are going on in the world. When I watch things from the 90’s like Dr. Katz everything just feels so much less, heavy.
I’m grateful I grew up in a more progressive and accepting time but I can see why’d you want to go back.
The reason people commented on her voice is because that's not her REAL VOICE. it's an affectation, Like Sarah Silverman's.
If you watch this clip from Voyager you'll hear her voice SLIP at 2:12:

I Love Kate Mulgrew!!!
😘👌😎👍
XOXOXO!!!
capt. janeway using a new holodeck program😄
I just read her book "Born With Teeth" in the book she writes about spending a summer in Ireland with a wonderful man that later became her husband, I guess this would be the man she's referring to in the interview. Love Kate Mulgrew so much.
Respect.
in heels
"you get a little demented" ... thats ironic
"Frank Smiley is an idiot who works on our show....." LMAO :) "He'll never work in this town again."
Occupational hazard 😂 😂 😂
I love kate mulgrew.
This is borderline Terry Garr/David Letterman! I love Captain Jayway
Samantha The Cat From Infinity Train
Man I love her!!
Yup...... that's the dance my uncles do when they are drunk.
she was so cute.
I love how she doesn’t let him interrupt what she’s saying
It's funny her saying she was old when she was only 41 here. How come after 20 everyone thinks they're old? People live until 80 on average. Women longer. Some people get to 100 and some even 10-15 more years. 41 is NOT old... at all. 26 years later and she is 66 and that is STILL not old. Never believe that, any of you.
Same age I am now not old at all
If you read her memoirs Born With Teeth and How to Forget you will begin to understand that she had gone through so much in her life when she was very young that she just felt old at the time. But that more than 20 years down the track she laughed at herself for even thinking it
Ok, now this version of Kate Mulgrew I would absolutely stick without protection.
8:55, he said jigsaw
Aww she did the jig
Boa noite, essa mulher charmosa e talentosa. Adorei o vídeo.
Her voice sounds exactly like Wanda Maximoff, aka Elizabeth Olsen.
omg wtf I didn't realize that
When was that ?
JANEWAY!
Star Trek Janeway!
lol he was forced to do it he knew and he did it
no one outdances the Captain dammit
My gosh! Conan is so young and good looking here.
Andy Richter the Swedish German?
And I was born 6 months later
When Star Trek was still watchable.
100%!!!
Picard , discovery the reboots ,,, allo ?
❤️
My irish great great grandmother had 31 kids
HA "someguy punched it into the internet" How the lingo has evolved.
ayyy wassauupppp
Lol
