Canada is large, and cold. Our summers are short (this year, it was on a weekend), so we need food products that can hold up to long travel times, and are shelf-stable for a couple of years. At least our cakes are tasty, and we do a pretty good job on beer, wine, and spirits. In fact, Canada invented ice-wine, because it's cold here. It involves leaving the grapes to freeze on the vine, and press them when frozen. The resulting syrup is fermented into a very sweet, dessert wine, capable of putting you in a diabetic coma if you drink too much, too fast.

These bars (and other similar products from other brands) were essentially invented as a way to make use of the fruit pulp (primarily apple) that is left over from the process of extracting juices from the fruits. They take the concentrated pulp after all of the juice has been completely removed, then rehydrate it with fruit juices, add in a few other ingredients like pectin, and press it into bars. All things considered, a fairly simple product.

I mean, it’s blended up fruit that’s been pressed and dehydrated. It’s fruit leather. I don’t think they add sugar, but the fruits themselves are pretty sweet so the bars are sweet af too. It’s honestly just a quick way to get an extra serving of fruit that doesn’t rot in five minutes. A lot of Canada has to pay pretty high prices for produce because our growing season is like 2 months. So we pay big money to ship it from other countries and then by the time it gets here it’s almost overripe. These bars were born out of necessity lol.

They often go on sale for 33 cents a bar at the grocery stores where i am, so there's that. they're cheaper and healthier than a candy bar, they have a shelf life of roughly forever, so when little Jamie 'forgets' it in the bottom of their backpack for 3 months it doesn't rot. The Guides and Scout camps and hikes wouldn't be complete without at least one per kid in case they get lost and need to spend the night under a tree fending off bears. Also good for lumberjacks, fishboat crews, long haul truckers, and any other long arduous work where concentrated food/fibre/sugar pellets are a welcome asset. (They're also a damn sight better than the nasty dry-ass fruit-leather/jerky we had back when I was a kid. The days before Fruit Roll-ups were a desolate time.)
