Driver swims out to ocean to avoid arrest after crashing into USBP vehicle during pursuit

#DELMAR (San Diego) - September 3, 2020
On 9/3/2020, at about 0137 hours, deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station attempted to conduct a traffic stop of a vehicle driving with no lights southbound on North Coast Highway 101 and El Portal Street in Encinitas. The vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued. The pursuit lasted for approximately one minute until the pursuit was terminated in the area of South Coast Highway 101 and E Street in Encinitas due to unsafe conditions. At short time later, deputies located the previously pursued vehicle which had been involved in a collision at the intersection of Coast Boulevard and 15th Street in the city of Del Mar. The vehicle collided with an unoccupied Border Patrol vehicle. Border Patrol Agents observed the driver of the vehicle flee on foot towards the beach. Deputies later located the suspect on the beach near Torrey Pines State Beach. The suspect fled from deputies into the water and refused commands to exit the water. The suspect swam out to sea approximately two hundred yards and deputies were unable to see if the suspect was in distress or in need of rescue. Other agencies assisted in keeping the suspect under observation as well as responded for the possible rescue of the driver. After about two hours, the suspect was brought aboard a law enforcement boat and transported to shore. Currently deputies are attempting to identify the suspect.
