I think everybody needs a woodworking bench. But, I know that not everybody has the thousands of dollars it takes to buy a quality bench from a woodworking store. I also know most woodworkers want to build their own anyway. Many friends of mine are woodworkers and most of them are saving up the $2000.00+ that it takes to buy the 8/4 maple to build their own. Whether Roubo style or another.
So I thought that I would present an alternative. This isn’t a new idea. Many UA-cam woodworkers have done this before me. But, I thought that I would like to add my take on it.
I went to my local home improvement “Big Box” store. I selected construction grade lumber. At my store they had a choice of a product they called whitewood, or Douglas Fir. The latter was kiln dried, and a much higher density and harder lumber so I chose that.
Where you live will dictate what you buy. Many parts of the country will have southern yellow pine, which is a great choice for this.
I took quite some time to sort through the bunk of lumber to ensure that I got straight pieces and pieces with as few knots as possible. I chose all 2x6’s, and I ended up with a workbench that was nearly 500 pounds. Very strong, very solid!

King's Fine Woodworking . We fathers all commend you for involving your daughter(s) and being clever about allowing her to photobomb for her Social media. In this day and age there’s so much warped mentality that coincides with “selfies” and social media. Especially with teen girls. That’s an entirely different rabbit trail we can’t travel here. But great Job building a table AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, BUILDING HER SELF WORTH! While given her a social media platform
Excelente Banco! Felicitaciones 👏🏼👏🏼
Great to see a dad get the girls working with wood and giving them the confidence to work with power tools
Hi Kevin! Thank you! I'm very lucky to have them with me!
I agree great job. Working with your family is very inspiring. Also love the red.
I agree Kevin! My grandfather introduced me to many different tools quite young, and I have had a love for tools ever since. Most of the tools in my garage were purchased by me.
And good on ya for getting your daughter involved. Get tools in her hands and let her make decisions and design.
Yes, she loves it. She has a couple of projects of her own here too.
Pics or it didn't happen.
Tony Ennis, haha, here is one. It's episode #4. ua-cam.com/video/Ztnbg7vLO3g/v-deo.html
that no joke looks sturdier than my house lol
Could use a lot more glue if you ask me
Probably already said, but chances are that future generations of yours will still be using this bad boy! Damn Nice, Sir!
enjoyed the video, definitely deserves a ton more views
Thank you.
I must be a true woodworker. Every time I see the wood grain pop I get the chills! lol
You, sir, are a master craftsman. It has been a sincere pleasure to watch you work. I'm also glad that you have a good helper. I know that makes your work rewarding beyond just building something.
wow..that is one gorgeous bench. You daughter seems to enjoy the work, I hope she takes up the trade.
Excellent Job! Your instructional manner is beyond reproach. The fact that you are not only involving your family in this build but they are learning from a true craftsman gets my vote every time! Very Well Done! eyedaddy
Hi Mike. Thank you!
This was impressive! a dark walnut centerboard would look nice as well. Nice skill!
One of the best woodworking channels around! Awesome
I just watched both parts on my Roku, not sure if UA-cam counts those as views. Nice bench and video. Just the right amount of narration. Subscribed!
Hi Paul! Thank you!
That red is beautiful! .... and be happy that your daughter is taking a shine to a trade!
Thank you very much!
Looks bloody brilliant! Love from Scotland 🏴🏴
Beautiful work!! I did a very basic table for right now with some assistance from my dad. Had to move my workspace to our basement to make some room in the garage. One of these days I will make this same bench as I expand my space, just not sure how I would ever get it out of the basement!! I personally love the color but it's also real close to my school colors where I grew up and still live with my family. Your daughter is a hoot and glad that she helps out like she does and enjoys it!! Keep it up!!
Thank you!
great bench, and even better than the bench is the time spent making it with your daughter. Great job & god bless
Thank you. And I agree with you. Family time is the very best!
Really nice work table, and it's always a pleasure to see a father and his child or children working together in the shop
THIS IS SPARTA!!! Oh wait, I mean indestructible table. Looks great, attention to detail and explanation is spot on as usual. Time to build me a mini version that breaks down for easy moving/storage.
Thank you very much. You can use 2x4 instead of 2x6. That would make it a lot easier to move around the components. And take a look at BenchCrafted's barrel bolt kit. It is a great way to make knock-down joinery that is unbelievably strong.
Your welcome, thanks for the tip. My idea is to have a workbench that "easily" goes from the basement to the front yard. Short trip with bare hands, but a haul with a handful of tools. So the bench will possibly double as a cart with removable pneumatic tires. No sketches yet just a vision I've been tinkering with.
has to be the best one ive seen yet. very nice.
Thank you very much.
Beautiful bench and daughter. Well done sir.
Great project brother. I love the red streak.
It's awesome that you're working with your daughter.
Thank you very much! And thanks for the vote on red!
Beautiful! You and your daughter do great work!
Thank you Jay!
Awesome job! I don't think my skills are up to building this table but it sure gave me a lot to think about. Your daughter's photobombing was priceless. Thanks. Great video.
Confidence, experience, craftsmanship, professionalism, discipline, fun, caring, hard work and work of ART. Topman
Wow, wish I had a shop for such a beautiful beach. Maybe some day, Great job.
Thank you very much.
You're an excellent carpenter and its awesome you're teaching your kids and they seem to be enjoying it!!
Man that is an awesome workbench! And it's even more awesome that your daughters are out there helping you! Good times!
Nice work and work bench too, I like the Red color even... Respect; I like how family work together, wish some day that my son and I have the possibility to do so
Thank you!
Great build! Love your daughters helping in the shop. I personally like that read dye.
Great build brother. Thanks for the video. Your daughter is a rock star.
Great set of videos, enjoyed all immensely. Greetings from Queensland Australia. Great work from the photo bomber.Cheers
exellent job with the very best help of your daughter. Bravissimo - It will be greater if Mounting a wood-vise but is beautiful anyway
Thank you. Looks easy enough to build for a novice like myself. Love the fact that no hardware was really use. I will want to add a clamp to it
Hello! Thank you for watching. You should build one. And have fun doing it!
As a novice, do you have all the clamps needed to glue the top and legs, the planner, the jointer, the router, the table saw and an assembly bench the size of my back garden? Plus 5 or 6 people to help you move it?
This was very nicely done, and I think it turned out just beautiful!
I watched both videos completely to the end and very much enjoyed watching your build, you have some great skills.
Thank you for sharing the experience.
Thank you for such a kind compliment
Brilliant! That is a gorgeous and very strong bench. I love the use of red dye for the centre pieces. Your daughter loves being in on the action. Very cute!
Very nice job. Looks great.
Thank you!
you are an artist a virtuosa with wood beautiful!!!!
Amazing! What a project and what a fantastic job you all did on this table and on a bit of a side note, I see the "Chemical Romance" t-shirt on one of your daughters. I was on the tour crew for their only arena tour they did a few years ago. Also, I did like the red wood die you used even though it was a bit "loud". I thought it was a good choice.
thats one hell of a bench well done keep up the good work
Nice looking bench and some great ideas about building it! Thnx.
Thank You!
Great looking workbench, your shop help seems to be very talented.
Lucky guy has a helper daughter. I am CareerBuilder for 20 years without children helping, children today love their own ways
Beautiful bench! Your techniques and construction were very well explained.
don't worry james RED makes a perfect contrast
I like the red, Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous table. You and your daughters make a great team. I really like the red too!
The red is perfect
Fantastic work as always
Thanks Andrew!!
Have a couple of days off & look after yourself & the Family
Yes, we have been taking a break. Luckily we have a few videos completed so we can keep posting.
& no more drills on the floor with drill bits in :-)
Absolutely gorgeous build mate!
amazing video Greetings from Holland
Great job. Great kids.
Great project, I will build it later this year. I am a new fan, Thanks.
Hi Richard! Thank you!!
bloody brilliant...well done
What a nice bench! been looking alot for a design to build for myself. I think this is it! thank you for the inspiration :)
Thank you! You should send in pictures after you build it!
Brilliant i really love watching your work, from Glasgow, Scotland
I think the red looks great with the bench. As meticulous as you are, I am surprised you didn't stain the entire centerpiece on the bottom shelf.
Great teamwork!
Great video(s) of this table. Nice, fun and good commenting. For a hobby woodworker I learned quite a few things. Thanks!
Beautiful! You have skills and are blessed to have family involvement, especially the photo bomber. Love the red accent btw.
Thank you!
Great build. Awesome job on the video. Thank you!
Thank you!!
Looks to good for a work bench
Nice build!
nice work..., amazing...
Thank you!
Great work once again & with an attentive & very enthusiastic assistant no less. Every reason for the pair of you to be proud not only of your work but of each other. My only criticism if I may pertains to your former lovely Thor hammer which I've seen earning it's keep doing other projects; surely such tool built with so much care should be treated with a bit more respect than left on the workshop floor? As for the word you were looking for regarding putting too much glue in hole & trying to peg it. I do believe one calls it hydraulic lock. Many thanks for sharing your lovely skill. Kind regards.
Hello! Thank you again! And "hydraulic lock', I will remember that name! :-)
Dear James, thank you very much for your courteous reply; I am glad I've managed to contribute albeit in some insignificant way. Always a pleasure to assist whenever I can. Take care & kind regards to all.
Great channel, great woodwork. I just subscribed because I love wood and would love to become a great woodworker like you. Amazing!
Good Job...
Thanks guru for this great videos..
Thank you for watching friend!!
very nice
Thank you!
That's a nice bench
Thank you!
Exelente trabajo.
Nice work good job
Great Job!
Thank you!
Like the bench....!
Thank you!
great job :) and good quality time with youre daughter
you make a really good team
It's really hard to stain or dye pine and get a good even finish. That being said, the bench looks great.
Tony Ennis, yes it is!!! :-)
Very nice sir.
The only thing I would change is the location of the bench.
BY PLACING IT IN MY SHOP!
subbed
Haha! Thank you!
I watched this video the first time not to long after you posted it and now that I have a new shop I watched it again and subscribed some time back. My question is if you were to sell that bench what would it be worth and one day your photo bomber will put a lot of us old woodworkers to shame if she keeps learning from you.
Muy, muy buen trabajo. Sois unos artistas!!
I think you should just upgrade to paint brushes for you putting glue on. Or you could also just fill a bucket with glue and dip your tenons in there haha. Looks great!
I cant believe I haven't thought of that! I would chat more, but I've got to get over to amazon and order a couple of hundred glue buckets!!
Thanks
~James
very nice bench / great job
Thank you!
very nice!
I tip my hat to you sir! Great craftsmanship a real expert. Nice bench, I am looking up videos to build myself a work bench. Not much experience and certainly not enough tools like the ones you have. Help me Jesus!
Go for it!
You need to teach a class on this workbench. I'd pay to come do that
Bit late to the party I know - but thanks for the video, loved both it and the bench. One thing I didn't spot you explain in the video or in the comments, apologies if you did and I missed it.....
Why does the bench overhang the legs more at one end than at the other?
That's an awesome bench! I'm sure where ever it's put that's where it will stay being that heavy! lol!
Haha, thank you!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching you and your family build this bench. Subscribed. Might you be planning on adding any sort of vice, or clamp, at a later date? Just curious.
I'm probably going to design my own leg & tail Vise. I'll film those too. Thank you for watching and subscribing!
Felicitaciones por un trabajo excelente, el suyo y el de si hija.
Eres muy amable. gracias.
Awesome job any plans to dress the bench i.e. vises, hold downs, etc. this was such a great series. Oh wait when I build my bench I can call you to chop the mortices because man are you quick lol.
Hi Thom! Haha!
I didn't have any plans to put Bench vises etc. I actually built this bench just to demonstrate the technique & ability to make ones-self a very affordable & quality bench quickly & easily. I had lots of requests from viewers to build one.
If there are a enough requests, I can custom make a wagon vise & leg vise to show the method. It's such a small fraction if the cost of buying manufactured vises. But no one has yet asked about it.
Anyway, thank you for the compliments! (And just between me & you, I might have sped up that footage of the mortising a tiny bit) 😁👍🏻
~James
King's Fine Woodworking Well you did a incredible job and looking forward to seeing your future. You have an awesome channel.
Well, the wood is under 200$, but how much does all that glue cost?! XD. Great project as always, it looks verrry solid, i actually want a workbench but i don't have the tools to make as straight cuts as necissary here without the project taking several years....
Thank you!!
Woodworking Bench = $200
James's desired amount of glue - $250
:-)
Parabéns pelo projeto e bem construída peça. Quanto a sua filha, a ajudante de hoje é a profissional de amanhã.
Obrigado!
Great looking bench, is there a reason why you didn't dowel through the various sections of glued formations ( Legs and Top) to reduce the risk of movement. I know they are well glued but is that strong enough on a heavy duty use bench?
I have absolutely no doubt that there is nothing on this earth that could tear those glue joints apart. The chemical bond created in a wide surface area face to face glue joint is far stronger than the integrity of the cellular composition of the wood fibers itself. If you could grip those legs with some massive tool and tear them apart, the glue joint would stay bonded and the wood would splinter and break apart in areas where there was no glue.
Beautiful bench. I enjoy your videos and family involvement. With a five inch top and soft wood, will a holdfast be able to grab in a 3/4” hole without counter boring a larger opening from the bottom?
Since I don't use hold fasts I don't know. Sorry.
A fantastic workbench. I have only one question, would it work to use white oak for the top? Thanks much!
Nice, but why such a heavy monster workbench? This thing stops any modern MBT! ;)
I would not have glued to the top on. How are you going to move this? Assembled, it's 400# without any hardware.
Hi Tony! I wanted maximum strength and racking resistance, so I secured it permanently.
Luckily for moving, I have 5 daughters, who all help me in the shop, so it's not bad. I also plan on keeping it in one spot.
But, if I were to need to move it, I will buy these. It's what I have on all of my heavy benches. It's a Workbench Caster Kit. , and they flip up and down as needed.

What? You get to build something for yourself??!!
Can i ask how much this awesome bench weighs? (Your daughter is a gem btw)
You need to give that girl a mallet so she doesn't need to pound the wood with her hands.
Оператору отдельное спасибо ;)
What are the wood squares on the floor?
