Famous Leslie Guitar Parts - Volume 1

- If anything sounds cooler than a giant Leslie cabinet with its spinning drum and rotor, I've never heard it. I recently acquired this 1974 Leslie model 145 to be used by the keyboard player in a band I play in called Skydog. But before I gave it up to him I just had to get a few guitar licks in. This particular Leslie was in excellent condition when we got it, but I spent an afternoon thoroughly cleaning it and tweaking a few things. It sounds fantastic now and really screams when paired with a guitar.
The model 145 is a two speed Leslie that features a '147' model amp. This of course had the old 6 pin Leslie hookup which meant that we had to use a Leslie "combo preamp" from the 70's to make it work with guitar. I close mic'ed the rotor with a pair of Audio Technica AT-4041s hard panned L/R. The drum was mic'ed with a large diaphragm AT-4033. The rotor was actually throwing off enough wind on "fast" to where I had to use a pop screen to keep the noise down. Mics were fed to a Mackie 8 channel board with XDR pre's, then directly into GarageBand via an Apogee Duet. No other pedals were used and the only effect added was a little reverb for spacial enhancement. Guitars were: 2018 R9 Les Paul (completely stock), 2007 Tom Rodriguez Stratocaster with Lindy Fralin pickups, 2001 Fender Custom Tele with Lindy Fralin pickups. Song titles are in the video, but needless to say these are some of the most iconic Leslie tracks ever recorded. (Please excuse my lousy Hendrix licks - not my strong suit.) Sorry about the weird focus problem in the middle. I think the rotor was confusing my camera. Enjoy!
FINALLY someone playing through a Leslie without talking about it how it works and themselves! Bravo!! 👍👍
That little wing cover was just absurdly good. Adds something unique even to Hendrix’s perfect playing
Where would modern music be without this wonderful invention
Imagine trying to get this sound prior to the Leslie speaker.
"Alright Jimi take two"
* Amp strapped to fan rotating 360 degrees around mic source *
"How was that? Did we catch that?"
You joke, but actually John Lennon made a pretty similar joke about the pain in the ass time the EMI engineers had trying to get a regular old microphone signal going through a leslie so that his vocals could be recorded through that. He said something to the the effect of "next time, I think we should just tie me upside down to the ceiling fan."
I think the Leslie speaker cabinet is one of the coolest musical gizmos ever. Thanks for sharing!
I didn't know Little Wing was played through a Leslie... excellent playing!
And Drifting , angel
Nice playing! The Leslie is one of my favorite effects.
"Something" the rythm, "Old Brown Shoe" and "Let It Be" the solos.
"Tomorrow Never Knows" vocals. Truly the end of the beginning - transformed the mop top Fab Four into The Beatles.
Lovely sound! Thanks for the mic tips.
Excellent video! I saw Skydog at the Tally Ho, in Leesburg, VA about 10 or so years ago. Great show!
"It don't come easy" intro might sounds great on the Leslie speaker. Anyway great playing :)
The Let It Be guitar solo - Single Version was played by George Harrison through his Rosewood Telecaster and a Leslie cabinet speaker
Almost everything on Abbey road is through the Leslie cabinet!
Fender Vibro tone
Love that stereo sound! Enriches the sound of guitars and keyboards...
Wanton Song...Zeppelin....Nough said! Incredible!🤘
Great idea. Added it to the list for the upcoming volume 2 video. Stay tuned. 🤘
Definitely🤘🤘
Fantastic Demo, playing and tone! Super Lush and the project is not easy, kudos for the hard work.
Plexidust thanks man! I appreciate the encouragement. 🤘🎶
Great video. It lets you see how the speed of the speaker changes the sound.
Wow great playing and tone, thank you so much. It helped me to set up my chorua pedal for this Lesley sound :-=
Thanks! Yeah, you can definitely get pretty close with a good chorus pedal.
Wow, this thing sounds incredible.
Was listening to Let It Loose and realized the guitar effect and just HAD to know what it was!!!
best guit vid i seen in a long time :) skydog is lucky to have u............. cheers from nor cal
That headless guy can really play !
Mate, such a good tone, sounds excellent 👌
Great demo!
THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR TOYS V.W.!!! I am on the Leslie path!! To that end I am definitely getting the T.C. Electronics 'Vibraclone' Rotary Speaker pedal. It NAILS the 'Let It Loose' Leslie sound ALMOST as well as a real 145 cabinet. It also evokes The Beatles, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and Led Zeppelin: real lo-fi, a little fuzzy and dirty-sounding. Epic playing too btw! Such great sound! Again, thank you!
Timothy J. Horan Have fun with that pedal man. It will certainly be lighter than a Leslie I can tell you that. 😂
That sounds nice and rich, would love to have heard it in person. Your keys player is going to be stoked. Great band by the way.
Nick-O He already is! Thanks man.
Great playing dude
nice
Sounds fantastic!, and thank you for the detailed info. I've been aiming to buy a Leslie to get these sounds, and especially the Steve Howe Leslie tone from Yes' song "And You And I". There are so many Leslie models it can be tricky to pick the best one, but this Model 145 sounds amazing.
Thanks. Good luck with your quest. If you’ve got the money and the space, definitely a fun thing to have around the house. However if you are gigging with it, I would recommend just getting a neo ventilator.
love is my badge!!!!!!!! great cover amigo :) .......
Very nice video very nice playing great stereo sound 👍🏻 building a Leslie right now from an organ I found on the side of the road . Can’t get enough of this sound and the “EHX Lester K” has a great effect but it’s no Leslie !
Sweet and a damn good player
Thanks for this!
Are you the same dude from the brothership?
Fanfreakintastic
Love your playing!
zummo61 Thanks! And yes, Skydog is an Allman Brothers tribute band. For some reason your other comment is no longer showing up on UA-cam. Anyway, check out my channel for a ton of Duane Allman related stuff if you’re interested.
I deleted the last comment after I realized who you are. I already subscribe but didn't recognize this post. I have been playing guitar since 1970, with the Allman's as my first influence, your videos gave me new insight after all this time. Keep up the good stuff. And get that Elizabeth Reed solo on this account!
Lovely! For more growly Leslied guitar, if you haven't heard it check out the title track to the Hamburger Concerto album by Focus
Jan Ackermann of Focus, indeed: Several parts performed through an own Lesie, even live
For those who never saw this: have a look here. ua-cam.com/video/IgQ5F7edTM0/v-deo.html
good machine
Fantastic for as change .. So much crap on youtube, but this is gold.
Yay! Someone who knows how to mic up a Leslie properly. Great job. Thanks mate. 🤣👍
What do you even mean? This is one variation of decent concert micing, if you want a narrow leslie sound. In this envrionment, going further away and getting more of the whole cabinet would be better!
So gooooood 😩😩😩😩
Ringo Starr: It Don't Come Easy was through a Leslie too, I believe. Love that sound.
Yes! I just got a new Leslie and will be doing a vol ii video soon. That one’s on the docket.
@@VirtualWoodshed Looking forward to your next video. Can't beat that classic lazy warble of a Leslie.
Very emotional 😶😮☹🥺😳😭😢
Ojalá encuentre uno de estos en Argentina, pagaría cualquier cosa, saludos amigo buen video!
Buena suerte mi amigo!
I'm waiting on my Leslie G37 now.
That’s great! Post some videos.
Aw Hell Yeah. Nice ....
I think the Leslie sound is unique. You show how it sounds very well indeed. I have been looking for a effect unit that will do what the Leslie will do and only one came even close. Itis a rack mount unit made from 1995 to 1997 by Digitech RPM-1 Tube Rotary speaker emulator, which has a Left horn out a right horn out and a center rotor speaker out, with stereo inputs. All the others I have looked into will only do a left/right and are more based on the rotor aspect of a Leslie.
Check out the Neo Ventilator
Another Leslie guitar tone that nobody ever talks about is What It Takes by Aerosmith. I believe it was a Telecaster played by Joe Perry.
Thanks, I had totally forgotten about that one! There is literally Leslie everywhere if you keep your ears open.
Nice work! Makes me want to play jimi better. Just got a Leslie. It’s wonderful. You need to hear it in person.
So this what sounds on the intro of Chain of Fools by the Commitments
Sounds superb!
How loud is it?
Does it break up early or at killing level? Do you think a 147 amp + combo preamp + leslie 16 could work as well?
It’s not that loud. Breaks up nicely at a reasonable volume. I’m not familiar with the model 16, so unfortunately I couldn’t give you an opinion on how that would work. Sounds a little complicated though. I would just find an old 145 and call it a wrap.
With a bass, you could do the intro to Orion by Metallica...
Banjaard that’s badass man. I probably haven’t heard that record since 10th grade. Might have to crank it up tonight! 🤘
really cool, I'm dreaming to get one
bb soni they can be had for 500-700. Keep an eye on Craigslist. Of course for guitar you’ll need a combo pre and a Leslie cable so tack on 400 for that.
VirtualWoodshed combo pre doesn’t come with it???? there’s one on eBay that goes for 1300 $....yes it’d be for guitar
bb soni nah man you gotta buy that separate. Hold out for a 145. They’re cheaper than the 122/147, also smaller and lighter.
Honestly, just get a ventilator. Waaay easier. Leslie great for studio but totally impractical to gig with.
@@VirtualWoodshed I use to have the ventilator & wasn't convinced so I bought the Hughes & keltner rotosphere & I love it BUT it's still not as good as what I just heard in your video which is the real thing indeed (The Beatles had that one I think)
Hope Volume II has No Matter What
Good call. I added it to the list.
Yes,,
Great vid...thanks so much. What are some top, classic rock songs played with a Hammond using a leslie rotary speaker?
Literally thousands
@@VirtualWoodshed Best known? or Top 5?
@@1212Maps Whiter shade of pale, magic carpet ride, Oye Como Va, dance to the music, my woman from Tokyo, gimme some Lovin, foreplay/long time, Green eyed Lady, whipping post. Those are a few that come to mind right away. Just Google it and I’m sure you’ll find a ton.
@@VirtualWoodshed Thanks VW. (I did try that but everything BUT what I wanted came up. Your list helps a lot.)
BTW...do you know of any vids that show a live concert where a viewer can see the Leslie speaker whirling and stop whirling as the music demands? All my questions are from an elderly friend who wants to see how this works with some famous organist-stars performing.
Amazing! Did you used just the leslie cabinet or its mixed with the guitar speaker sound?
Thanks. All Leslie. No tricks or gimmicks.
You forgot to include Black Hole Sun
No I didn’t ✌️ ua-cam.com/video/9-Ma5WxDCeQ/v-deo.html
This is just the guitar direct into the combo preamp? I just picked up a 142 and am planning for how to hook it up
R Os yep. You will need a Leslie cable, that’s about it. Good luck 🤘
@@VirtualWoodshed It doesn't have the combo preamp, but I build things so am planning a box. Now I can dig around and find the schematic for the combo preamp and see what they did. I recorded at a studio one time that used a marshall jcm800's line out to drive their leslie (?). I'm glad to hear the classic tones are just direct in!
Think Gilmour used one too
Very Nice..esp..Stones tune...(Exile era).....did U C the recent Bobby Keys doc.? U should .......Was expecting some of the SRV Leslie stuff thrown in too.,......btw...U hear of Charlie Hunter?...check im outt
Is there a pedal that creates this sound?
Yeah lots. Google it.
Where’s volume 2?
It’s coming. Please sub!
This is the EXACT tone ive been chasing for years. The problem is im trying to get it in a pedal....lol.
Anyone reading this have suggestions im listening!
H&K Rotosphere and Neo Ventilator are the two closest things I’ve ever heard, especially if you run them in stereo. But there’s just nothing like the real thing when you get right down to it.
spare organ parts if you can find them (the tremolo unit and motor/speaker assembly...here's something I came up with this past fall, got a couple organ tremolo units, not every organ has them, but you can locate them now and then, and most organs are being given away or dirt cheap, I'd rather jsut get the unit tho than trash a good organ..if it works, you might be able to put something like this together, here's a demo:
ua-cam.com/video/j5fCeWtjoKk/v-deo.html
@@VirtualWoodshed I definitely have had multiple people tell me the Ventilator is as close as one can get. Its pricey though, wich is no biggie but its pretty big. They did come out with a smaller version called “the Vent II” that i got my eye in. Thanks
@@bluesintheblood very Awsome! That really is cool as hell! The only thing it’s missing is that overdrive effect. But damn thats a killer build.
@@bluesintheblood you could sell those. Fast.
Badge sounding very on point until you sped up the Leslie lol but yeah. Can't beat the real thing. I've had every damn pedal there is and some day I'll get one !
haha, yeah sorry man. couldn't resist the temptation! lol. thanks for the comment. Hope you get your Leslie!
Yeah, I've got a chance to get a super clean 710 that's local but it's not anywhere near a 145 or 122. Same size and the top part is the same but it has a rotosonic bottom and is solid state😡 although I have heard a SS Leslie and it didn't sound bad but still. IDK it may take a lot to make it work with guitar too. And there's also a Motion Sound unit I can get. But I need to actually try it. I've heard good things and MEH things about those but it looks interesting
kevin malone Save up for a 145. You won’t get the same growl out of the 710. My $.02.
Gotta go Univibe for Jimi ..
I love a univibe as much as the next guy, but he absolutely used a Leslie for little wing. It’s been very well documented and it’s pretty obvious when listening.
Pa Tero true. I don’t recall ever seeing or hearing him use a Leslie live.
i believe in pantera - floods also use this
